The band uses a talkback mic system to discuss cues, keys, song selection, etc., in addition to their "Improv Sign Language for Musicians".

Before I saw Umphreys, a friend of mine told me this: "One guitar player is one of the best guitar players I've ever heard live, and the other one is light years better." I was like "OK, you have my attention." I've been a fan ever since, and my wife loves them even more than I do (her license plate is "UMPHMG"). Love this video. Great reaction. I think all Umphreys fans had that same reaction at some point.

Took my wife to see her first Umphs show at Red Rocks several years ago. Zappa opener one night and JRad the other. She became an instant fan. Walked away blown away at how she just listened to Umphs be two completely different bands...couldn’t comprehend how anyone could do that. Love watching your reactions. Never seen a bad show. Enjoy!
Because they are not sellouts and all over the radio. Very underground and saw them live in 05 for the first time. Even then I said,, these guys are going to be legends.
It’s a blessing and a curse to be labeled a “JamBand”. A blessing because within the scene you are guaranteed some open minded listeners who are for my money the most devoted fan base around. The curse is that the vast majority of the planet will never take you seriously or see you as anything more than some hippie bs.
And you could listen to 10 songs and have absolutely no idea what their sound is, how to describe what's coming next. Which can be awesome or terrible depending on the situation,. or when someone comes across them for the first time. Or so me thinks.

They actually Played this song in a Borders Bookstore in 2007. Talk about confused customers. Discovered them early in my guitar playing development when I was in high school 2005. First time I saw Jake live I couldn’t believe my ears. Chicken pickin to Van Halen shred to reggae breakdowns in a single song. Seen them over the last 13+ years and I’ve never not left a show blown away grinning ear to ear. So glad they are getting the recognition they deserve.

This WBG is my go-to when I really need to go there. I love my Dead, Phish of course. But as a younger jam band fan, just turned 30, Umphreys will be the band I grow up with & be "my band". Umphrey's does jams a little different. More like directionally inspired improv. They have certain hand signals to communicate to the members when someone is leading. They also talk into their monitors sometimes. And then Jimmy Stewarts are another variation of jams they do sometimes. This WBG is so beautiful it almost makes me tear up sometimes. I couldn't imagine witnessing this live. It's about as perfect of a 1st jam section as you can get, in my opinion.

I saw UM in front of 10 people at the Fox theatre in Boulder around 2001 or 2002. One person left bc they couldn't handle the avant garde nature, and one other left bc they fell into a rail and broke their nose from groovin so hard..then there were 8. True story!

To this day I still say Myers is criminally overlooked because of what Cinnengar and Bayliss create with their ability to compliment each other and make their guitar solos intertwine with each other....Myers is a beast on the kit, in a class all his own!
When I first started seeing this band, I would be at the show laughing my ass off. Laughing at the absurd skill of all of them. Watching your reactions and your face slowly melting has brought me back to that time good sir. I was basically belly laughing a good 75% of this video. Love seeing an Umphreak being born right in front of my eyes...on a screen.

So amazing to watch an educated musician experience umphreys for the first time like this. Especially when you "sound out" the riffs on the first listen. You should do a react video for any The Aristocrats song. I suggest Bad Asteroid, Get it Like That, or Furtive Jack
Conduit - Umphrey’s Mcgee (Chicago, 8/7/13) (on youtube) would be an absolutely great pick for this. Song is digestible but the jam following is absolutely top notch and stands out from the rest for me personally. Give it a listen ya’ll, insane stuff.

Your reactions were literally identical to me & my friends the first time we heard/seen UM circa 2005 in Chicago. What an explosive performance it was. Our minds were blown away. And this reaction video literally puts me in a great mood every time I come back to it!

Who are the seven thumbs down? What could possibly be your reasoning? Even if you are not a fan of the band or this tunes metal styling's, Michael's reaction is worth the price of admission. Pure joy and astonishment. I can't think of any reason but just grumpiness.

I am a 52 yr old Dead Head/Metal head that "discovered" UM 5 years ago, since then, I see them every time they come to Colorado. I've really enjoyed the phish/wsp/um stuff because I've had to justify it to friends for so long that it's cool to have a learned ear explain with terms I don't understand that there is really a talent to what these artists accomplish. Once I saw the song you'd be reacting to, I knew this would be a treat to watch. Been seeing these guys since 2003 and they are the best. Love it! I saw UM in front of 10 people at the Fox theatre in Boulder around 2001 or 2002. One person left bc they couldn't handle the avant garde nature, and one other left bc they fell into a rail and broke their nose from groovin so hard..then there were 8. True story!

To this day I still say Myers is criminally overlooked because of what Cinnengar and Bayliss create with their ability to compliment each other and make their guitar solos intertwine with each other....Myers is a beast on the kit, in a class all his own!

When I first started seeing this band, I would be at the show laughing my ass off. Laughing at the absurd skill of all of them.
Watching your reactions and your face slowly melting has brought me back to that time good sir. I was basically belly laughing a good 75% of this video. Love seeing an Umphreak being born right in front of my eyes...on a screen.
What I like about that is that much of it is all composed.

So amazing to watch an educated musician experience umphreys for the first time like this. Especially when you "sound out" the riffs on the first listen.

Conduit - Umphrey’s Mcgee (Chicago, 8/7/13) (on youtube) would be an absolutely great pick for this. Song is digestible but the jam following is absolutely top notch and stands out from the rest for me personally. Give it a listen ya’ll, insane stuff.
