The item you mentioned on the strat which is a G&L, is his signature piece called the Jake blade and it it available for limited styles of guitars. It pops directly into the tremolo or where the whammy bar would go.

The band recorded 10 songs in one day in studio 2, this being the only cover. From what I know, and I could be a bit off on a few details but the overall story is real.. but I believe this was the last song they did that day and I believe **may** have had to ask for permission to record it even for themselves and not to ever release. The thought of recording a Beatles song at Abbey Road is wildly audacious but as the story goes, after the people at Abbey heard it they were pretty blown away and gave the band their blessing to release it.
*edited to say they'd been covering this song for years so it was kind of like a "hey, while we're here, uhh... ya know" type of thing. Pretty amazing.

It was the last song they recorded in a 13hour day and they nailed it in one take - the album vocals were almost all overdubbed in post but the instrumentation they didn't really touch. That this was a one take, off-the setlist random to end the day, is what makes it the most impressive to me.
