Greetings from Oregon, USA. Love this build. I own a 2012... same color with a white roof, low mileage... like 80,000 kilometers. Took off the ridiculous roof rack and bumper, replaced with a Victory 4x4 aluminum bumper and roof rack, lots of lights (Baja Design and Diode Dynamics), big Warn winch (made in Oregon), some various molle panels. I love your gull wings... that is an inspired mod. I agree about the small petrol tank... I always have to carry RotoPax on any overlanding trip. I think my next mod may be a bigger tank too. My truck gets about 13 liters/100km fuel economy, which is pretty good imho for what it is. But that tank is ridiculously small.
FANTASTIC! 🔥🔥 First mod I did on our 2012 was a LRA 115 litre tank, the duel factory tanks make the FJ bloody heavy when full 115 litre is pretty much perfect for around 650-700 K range. LRA tanks are bloody tough too. Go a TJM front bar, 10 years of hell and ours is pretty much still perfect, no rust or cracks from corrugated roads. Great episode and FJ 🤙🏼

Great mods. One of the best cruisers out there. The FJ is hands down one of the best vehicles to roll off the Toyota factory production line. It's pretty much bulletproof. Transmission cooler was a wise decision. The only vulnerable area, especially because it's a tow vehicle is the rear diff. Stock diff is a single pin diff , I'd be putting a 3 pin diff in it to make it indestructible. About 3k. I've owned an FJ since 2014 and have clocked up 230,000 km. Nothing has gone wrong except a rear cargo door gas strut.
Great looking rig. I own a 2012 FJ and it only has the a trac setup. Mine is a Jap import, apparently there were quite a range of mods that were fitted to different spec FJs. I am looking at doing a few mods to mine as soon as I have the spare cash. I tow a caravan with mine and do some gravel driving, mainly shiny trips. I would like to fit a winch and bar with a 40mm lift, so I can get the caravan out of slippery areas and do some easy off road solo trips.
Thanks Ron, the work Jono has done on that FJ is amazing. Ive done a few rear setups on mine as well. Have a different setup but similar 20L Jerry on rear drivers arch, and 100Amp Lithium on Passenger rear arch, Redarc on Cargo Barrier. Looove Jono’s rear luggage shelf, presumably off the spare tyre mount? Would love to see some more details on that if possible? Jono, you should get somebody to manufacture your gullwings and rear luggage shelf and Jerry holder, as I would expect you would have plenty of interest, …. If that floats your boat. Great FJ mate, love to do something similar, but the weight restraint on these are very tight, I recon that you’ll be at least 280 kg over the limit, or mabe more, we have a Fj and long range tank and filling this up with no draws or roof rack we 20 kg over by weigh bridge, but love your set up. FJ’s always pulling out other cars in difficulty’s .
I think this is a great rig, its a little bit different from the normal protagonists and is really well thought out. You didn't say what brand the "lounge chairs" where though?
This is an awesome build and shows if you plan the rear draws you can make a really functional setup. The Gull Wings are excellent and wish you could buy them. The fuel economy must really be affected with the 33" tyres (Plus RTT)? I run standard tyres and with a main and aux tank I can get well over 1600km (193L). On road between 10.5 -13 L/100km and 13-14 L/100km off road/outback touring.
You have a few options for long range tanks on the fj. Arb long ranger has an 84L and a 120L options to add to the factory 72L, which will give you 156-192L of capacity. The 84L will maintain a good departure angle. I personally have the 120L and my fj is as thirsty as yours (35s and a SAS doesn’t help), I can easily get 1000km range depending on driving conditions/style. Some people get the 115L standard tank replacement, but it hangs lower than factory and definitely affects ramp over angles. I’ve also heard less than glowing stories about these tanks from other fj people.
Also if your FJ came with one tank factory (depending on which world market) adding an extra tank throws the emission system vacuum off & triggers dash warning lights. Best to add one large tank if this is the case.
Nice FJ! If it has the 4.0L (1GR-FE, petrol), it probably gets about 8 MPG in 4L on 4WD terrain, like my American Tacoma ... real gas guzzler on the slow stuff. Sucks gas like nothing I've ever owned ... my 3.0L Nissan was a real dog at 12 MPG on the slow stuff, but the 8 of the 1GR-FE is just wild. Gas mileage is key for range.
Thats a mad FJ, jonny is nice to have a chat with aswell 👌100% landcruiser ahahahah.....could he not just chuck in a later model fuel tank? So he has 160L ?
The early US FJ’s were based on the 120 Prado. The later models, available in Australia are based on the 150 Prado. The wheel base is 100mm shorter than a Prado
Nice set up... really great FJ...one thing though is I would have thought a long range fuel tank would have been one of the first mods seeing as he's doing so much touring??
RD, thanks for bringing this legend out, into the open. I'm tall and don't fit the 70 series for long drives. Had a Prado 120 Grande for 8 years and loved it, first 4x4 I ever needed a tow out with but great for dropping the kids off at school. Traded in for a late model Kakadu and had to get towed of the beach by a 1982 hilux. Sold the Kakadu and bought an Amarok cuz itz got balz, and oil leaks every year which cost $k to fix. Of course toyota make the best offroad vehicles, and I apologise for straying to... others. I live in the pilbara and need a proper 4wd. Is an FJ better than a 70 series wagon of similar worth? Now the 70 comes in auto, I won't need to get my leg shortened to operate the clutch.
I have a FJ myself, and can confirm these modifications are cool! Especially those Gullwing doors 👌 However, I don’t consider FJ to be a thirsty car! I had an AWD Audi A5 that used the same amount of fuel! The added weight, change of tyre size, and other mods definitely had an effect on fuel consumption of this FJ; but again, I don’t see FJ engine as a thirsty one. I’ve got 11.9 L/100 Kms out of it myself. The other thing is that I wouldn’t retune and engine which was originally tuned by Toyota as they would know much better than my local mechanic (even if he is a very good one!). That might have caused the car to burn more fuel too. Also, I believe the original tank is around 70L. Auxiliary ones come at 110 and 120L, and that’ll put the total fuel capacity somewhere around 180-190 Ls. So, the 160L that was mentioned in the video might not be accurate. Btw, post 2013 FJs were fitted a large tank from factory. The other thing is that you can connect the rear camera to the head unit too, and then have it showing both on rear mirror and head unit. Moreover, yes, all FJs come with rear diff as standard.
The FJ from 2012 to early 2015 came with the small tanks they say 70 Lt but I've run it low a few times and can never get over 60lt and after talking to a few other fj owners they have said the same. After 2015 they came out with the bigger tanks .
My 2016 FJ Cruiser gives me around 8kmpl average and slightly lower doing hills. I just added a transmission oil cooler, snorkel, oil catch can and Bilstein 6112 and 5160 in the rear. My tires are OEM size MTs. The fuel economy is same as a Fortuner with diesel but with far better ride, performance and feel on or off road.
I must've missed something. I thought your cameraman had a Prado? The bloke who was with you and Torbs, getting all bogged badly on the Simpson Desert trip?
Hi Ronnie. PLEASE INFORM ME WHO IS THE MANUFACTURER OF THOSE REAR WINDOWS THAT PPEN ON THE FJ. I ALSO WANT A SET OF THOSE IF POSSIBLE. THANKS. NEVILLE FROM SOUTH AFRICA. WE ENJOY YOUR GREAT VIDEOS.

@@andrevanderwalt2515 correct, I didn’t say they were different. The FJ wheel base is shorter than Prado
Correct and slightly wider 👍🏻
Could make an absolute killing by making a kit for those gullwings, those things look grouse.
Yeahhhhh buddy!
15:27 😂😂😂😂😂😂 nice one
absolute machine
Awesome 👍
You need to sell those roof consoles cause I’d buy one for my FJ tomorrow!
Awesome car that looks a lot better from my couch then it did in that back seat the morning after a few 😂
Nice set up... really great FJ...one thing though is I would have thought a long range fuel tank would have been one of the first mods seeing as he's doing so much touring??
The...........FUN-JOY..........Cruiser.
'Comfortability'..... perhaps just 'comfort'??
Wow!! This build is next level! More going on than my actual apartment! Where did you get Gulwings come from?
fj's are tough as and dont get enough attention
👍. Nice looking rig. Well done on the build. So why wouldn’t you say the brand of the bullbar / side steps?
Wow nice build! Are those gull wings available for purchase? I’ve been looking for a set but the ones I’ve seen are too boxy looking. Those are great!
Land Cruiser for sure.
Hay Ronny love the video you need to do a Dmax for a modified episode
Jyi cusahh 🤣🤣🤣
LR fuel tank is a game changer. Stock tank is 80L - factory dual tank adds another 80L without sacrificing any departure angle.
He said 134kw after a tune. Did Jono mean 234? Because the stock fj gets 200. Can we clarify that and also where he got the tune?
Would make sense.
Another np300 (d23 Navara) plzzzz
I have a FJ myself, and can confirm these modifications are cool! Especially those Gullwing doors 👌
However, I don’t consider FJ to be a thirsty car!
From 2013 they started on the 160l tanks. Mine is a 2014 and has the big tank.
@@reconadventures9257 it depends on the country too
@@RoyFJ65 where did you get the 6112 in australia, been looking for them?
dude! the gull-wing windows are awesome!! how do we go about getting a set of those?
I must've missed something.
I thought your cameraman had a Prado? The bloke who was with you and Torbs, getting all bogged badly on the Simpson Desert trip?
He still is but he wasn’t full time Jono is full time Chris is super busy with the TV show, other stuff and my stuff
They’re an awesome car. The old Ironman rubbish bar strikes again though…
I was wondering what bar that was, will definitely avoid.
It looks like an ARB.
*Lots of good mods!*
Surely that is over GVM, especially when towing. How much does it weigh ?
🤐
Next mod for his FJ should be an ls3 6 sp auto Gu Patrol with all the shit ! 😂 Regards Tony.
Love my fj
Super cool
Where did you get that rack over the spare wheel?
134kw tuned. Stock is 200kw.
The 200kw will be at the engine, while the 134kw will be measured at the wheels
@@michaelkeenan6668that would be a massive power loss to the wheels.
🤙
Unreal mate beautiful country how far from Brisbane is that area
A few of the shots are from double island , Northern Territory, Cape york , and WA .
WA is pretty much Brisbane mate.
@Taylor Sukoshi only 4500km between them haha
@@reconadventures9257 that's why you ozzies need cruisers aye.
I've built a buggy, using a GU patrol driveline here in Perth, keen to hear your take on it.
I want to put these gullwing windows in my FJ! Where did you get them?
Stock gear ratio?
21:10 dont move the CAM!
Hi Ronnie. PLEASE INFORM ME WHO IS THE MANUFACTURER OF THOSE REAR WINDOWS THAT PPEN ON THE FJ. I ALSO WANT A SET OF THOSE IF POSSIBLE. THANKS. NEVILLE FROM SOUTH AFRICA. WE ENJOY YOUR GREAT VIDEOS.
As spoken about in the video Jono hand made them 👍
the fj has a shorter wheel base than the prado! by 4 inches!
I'm wondering how does it go against a 4runner as an overlander? Comfort, off-road capabilities etc...
