Asus also tends to opt for the PD to be on that port, out of consideration for single-connector solution USB-C monitors with PD on their USB-C ports (such as the _awesome_ new ProArt PA278CGV), meant to be used with USB-C PD+DP alt mode tablets, convertibles, MacBooks, Mac Minis, Zenbooks, and handhelds like the RoG Ally.
I finally did it. I broke away from Dell and Alienware and have a G18 in the mail. The G18 I got has per key RGB and a 4080. I couldn't compromise on the screen anymore. Hopefully all goes well. Keep up the great work! 👍
Ive upgraded to this from an 2021 Strix G15, 5800h, 16gb and 30708gb and I have to say the prices varied wildly, My local Currys had it for £2100 and Amazon had it the same spec and model for £1800, 13980HX, 16gb, 40708GB. I got £800 for my old laptop which was still going strong and im happy with the modest upgrade. It states it comes with 12 month warranty but after registering it its actually 24 months, then for £70 I can get another year for a total of 3 years warranty.
Being able to close the lid and use it in docked mode is such a valuable feature these days, i dont get why many laptops arent still designed to be used closed, considering how many people buy them to replace their desktop
The entire reason for landing on a laptop with a 4060 like this would be to leverage the DLSS 3 / 3.5 improvement gains over a 30 series card. Comparing raw performance with DLSS disabled seems a bit silly to me. Otherwise, great review.
As a DevOps engineer, I require a powerful Intel machine for both work and gaming. I recently tested the G614JV model, equipped with a 13980HX processor, a 4060 RTX GPU, and 32 GB of DDR5 RAM, all displayed on a 1920x1200 16:10 screen. After a two-week trial, I can attest that this device is a beast. Running on the latest version of Revyos Windows 11, it flawlessly handles all modern games, including Cyberpunk, on their maximum settings. Judging only by the 1% lows this is much better than the Legion 5. Not to mention the other aspects in which the G16 also leads. But still too expensive imo, at least in Europe.
Yeah, this is like 800 Euros more expensive than Legion which is often available at a discount for some reason. I just got mine, it was a no-brainer. Plus, tacky looks aren't for everyone, I wouldn't take this to a business meeting or anything similar to that 😁
@@MyRealName Lenovos are soo often discounted because it's the only way they can sell more than ROGs, the main reason people choose them instead, but personally I'd rather have a bit of patience, like last year when I bought a G17 3070Ti for 1600 EUR, I just waited like less than a month for a 30% off discount.
It's all relative in pricing. Imagine paying 2x the amount for only 1/10th of the power. That was just 10 years ago. We're in the golden era of pc gaming, can do no wrong really.
@@FTL1511 Yeah I think you're right, ROG is still a more popular brand, but you can't always wait a month, I needed a laptop now. I can't get over the tacky looks of most gaming laptops, though, because it's not only for gaming. Don't want to be seen on a meeting with an rgb monster.. Legion looks business like.
I was considering the Strix G16. But I find my Zephyrus G14 to be a better deal. The normal pricing of the Strix G16 was about the same price as the Zephyrus G14 when I got it for 10% discount. The pricing of the Strix G16 here seems a bit absurd, same for its config in my region
Also depends on what GPU u go for, for eg. I wanted a 4080 and with the 125W TGP cap I felt it's not worth going for the Zephyrus G14. It's about a 30% performance difference compared to the Strix G16 with 175W TGP
What’s up with the names, Best Buy’s website freaks out when you put these names in and similar varieties pop up and you realize there’s like 1,000 versions
Jarrod, in the "Internals" section can you please check if it's possible to remove the fans without detaching the heatsink from the motherboard? I believe it will be a useful addition to all future reviews
Edit: apparently the issue is being solved by BIOS update With Asus there is always caveats. In this case, although they are using HX series, the memory is 4800MTs, even the non HX could do 5200MTs. Last year was this and not having HDMI 2.1. Maybe next year they catch up with the market.
This is no longer an issue. After a BIOS update it will support 5200MT/s. I upgraded my G18 to 32GB/5200MT/s and was initially disappointed it was stuck at 4800, it is currently running at 5200 after one of the BIOS updates.
@@azeem71191 The answer is... sort of. It does seem to hitch a bit in games (G18, 2023, 4080) but not as bad as when I first got it. BIOS updates seem to have helped. There also seems to be an issue with 12/13th gen CPUs that cause hiccups which may be what I'm seeing. As an aside even the newest BIOS won't go about 5200MT/s on the G18, I'm a bit bummed by that.

You don't talk about nonsense and keep a high pace. I think you you are number one on youtube when it comes to laptop reviews. Keep it up!
I looked up what the most reliable gaming laptop brand was and a lot of people said Asus. Found this model and it looks good. Only worried because I had an Asus computer that lasted a while but the plastic casing came apart quickly and I couldn't open it without holding a piece of the laptop together.
I have this laptop. Newer Plastics are different. It feels rock solid, almost like metal but doesn't spread heat and get hot......don't let the plastic fool you. The top display lid is all metal, the hinges are a unique design and sturdy. The best part are the thermals.
Which version did you get? What year? What model? I have a g14 from 2022 that I got on sale for $600 and it's been a dream. It works great and plays all my games at high frame rates.
I'd say it depends on which year's model, which configuration you got, and most importantly your intended use case. I assume you'd use it both for gaming and school work (since it's a discreet gaming laptop) and that your school work wouldn't benefit from the 16:10 aspect ratio screen of this year's model. So, if you got last year's model, it might be a better value than this year's model depending on the specs and whether you got a good deal on it. If that's the case, then the RTX 3070 Ti model is the best bang for your buck (and a better value than thE new model with the RTX 4070). This is in addition to it having enough power to run anything you throw at it for the next (I'd say) five years at least at medium to high settings. If it's the 3070 (plain) model then it's not bad and should run most AAA games smoothly for the next three years (maybe at lowered settings for some; or maybe not, since I don't know the future ofc). I expect the 3060 wouldn't be able to run upcoming AAA games unless you're willing to lower the settings way down for some games, especially since it had only 6 GB of VRAM. This is of course assuming you're not planning on doing anything too CPU-intensive and single-threaded, since last year's AMD CPUs didn't have the best single-core performance; and if that's the case, then you would have been better off getting this year's model with a 13th Gen Intel CPU. And then, the RTX 4060 model is preferable to the 4070 model since the latter is a ripoff. Hopefully you bought smart and you're happy with your purchase. And may it serve you well either ways.
I was waiting on this review. Thanks Jarrod. I wish there were more thin and lights though with the new dlss and frame generation tech. Don't know why budget to mid range gaming laptops are so big.

I would upgrade from my 6 years old GTX 1050ti laptop. I thought about a PC, but the laptop is the best option for me.
oh god i just upgraded to g16 qhd+ rtx 4060 i9 13980hx from my 1050 ti as well, totally worth it. and since that was the only budget option in sales that met most of my demands

So glad I was able to grab a 2022 Lenovo Legion Pro 5 (i7-12700H/3070/16gb DDR5/1tb Nvme) from Amazon for $1199. I love my 2019 Helios Predator 300 but the sheer amount of heat/noise it produces now a days just wasn't worth it anymore.
One problem with a lot of entry/mid range GPU laptops is that they often are coupled with higher end cpus. No one needs a 7945hx for a 4060, yet people end up paying unnecessarily more, ending up with a heavy gpu bottleneck in most games. Just like this model you reviewed. 14c i7 for a rtx 4060 mobile is just overk*ll. An i5 would have done the job and cut the price. This way the entry/mid range laptop gpu´s end up in an overpriced bracket duo to non gpu related things. Thankfully there are still plenty of brands on the market that also offer entry level combinations. Some laptops just make no sense, at least not for the main purpose of gaming (which in regards to GAMING laptops is most likely the thing). Like combining at ryzen 7 with a rtx 3050. That is probably an offer for someone who mainly runs cpu heavy workloads while running some casual games at times.

Lenovo Legion is Way better. Super cool and quiet.

Jarrod, in the "Internals" section can you please check if it's possible to remove the fans without detaching the heatsink from the motherboard? I believe it will be a useful addition to all future reviews
Edit: apparently the issue is being solved by BIOS update
With Asus there is always caveats.
BIOS 312 enabled support for 5600. My 16GBx2 KFs are running at 5600 CL40. But the perf improvement is not worth the hassle tbh

Just a high school student, didn’t play any games.
Which version did you get? What year? What model?
I have a g14 from 2022 that I got on sale for $600 and it's been a dream. It works great and plays all my games at high frame rates.
@@theexile4694 he said G16, so it must be this year's model.

That is probably an offer for someone who mainly runs cpu heavy workloads while running some casual games at times.

with some laptops offering HDR or dolbyvision now, I wish you would talk about how well the display handles HDR gaming, or at least point out witch models are capable of HDR gaming and witch are not. Any explanations for why the 1% Low are so great on this laptop?
Were the drivers unoptimized on laptops tested earlier in the year? Is the 4060 just better in that regard compared to other cards? Is it some specific component of the Strix?
It's the amount of vram on the gpu
@@violent_bebop9687 That can’t be it. This laptop only has 8gb and has way better 1% Lows relatively to its average compared to other laptops with more VRAM.
