thanks! yeah i came over with a group of 20 peeps from america. there was 2 left after 6 months. i worked in a building with 600 teachers (nova mm center). 40 of them are left. great stuff huh?
yeah it was about 9 feet long and about 5 1/2 feet wide, but yeah my feet totally hung off the futon. one time it caused me to push my comforter off onto my space heater. melted a huge chunk out of the bastard. on the bright side at least they arent flammable.
I worked for NOVA for 5.5 years and left a year before the meltdown. I didn't have much issue with them, besides the fact that 8 lessons a day was crazy!! Now I am an ALT. I do miss conversation lessons though. Teaching HS students that don't care about English can be a drag too ;-)
somehow they understand the layout of the postal code system which is even more confusing because they are not in sequential order. how they do that is beyond me. here is little fact though...i almost have never seen a car in japan not have gps.
I really appreciate your insights shared in these videos. Thanks for going to all the trouble and don't let the people who take pot shots bring you down. They aren't all about fairness, not by a long shot. Plus if you could see them, a lot of them would turn out to be exactly as young as they actually sound. Thanks and keep them coming :)
@kowabunga1417 @kowabunga1417 Nova would also pay their rent and when they stopped paying. This left many foreigners not only broke (because they were not being paid )but also facing eviction from their apartments.
I've been to Osaka a few times. I love that place. So much to do. Nice video. Oh, some advice for anyone going: Get someone to guide you, or he is right, it is easy to get lost. My girlfriend is Japanese so I'm lucky. But seriously, I had alot of fun. Of course I am a tourist and not living there yet. Maybe that is a little different.
October 12 I buy my ticket soon! as for where ill be . Tokyo . But I plan to come over to Kansai area too when i get a place to crash. so you know we will have to chill bro!
i am an ALT now too. man i would never trade it for nova but alas i was MM center, or a floating head of death as they use to call us webcam teachers. so, my situation might have been alot different.
I'm going to be coming over in march with interac...i have to have a 1 week orientation in a paid hotel whilst my accommodation is sorted out and they help me with bank, first day and mobile phone...btw, did you have to do a teaching course like a EFL/TEFL/TESOL
um trying to get into any country in a unlicensed plane i think is illegal. So use a recognised airline or as i mentioned try to become a teacher...most jobs though do prefer you to have a degree...or you can apply to go to uni over there, this is easier if you are linked to a Uk/USA uni but it is possible to just go to uni there but its idea that you can speak japanese
I know this is an old video... and people already may have asked this question before (but I havent seen all of your videos to know really know...) But anyway, I've been looking at a website for jobs in japan and most of them require you to be living in Japan in order to apply for the job.. how did you get your job without being in Japan first? How would I go into learning about that because I have been studying Japanese and I would love to work there (the economy is SO much better than the US..
yeah all 214 videos. most of which are quite positive. which means YOU have not looked at my video content. on top of that no one is forcing you to watch my channel.
So, I don't know if you've found an answer to this question already but... the JET Program is super popular and also there's some websites I'm sure you could find that can help. I know on Gaijin Pot they have jobs you can apply for that are listed there by Japanese employers. Some require you to be in Japan and some don't! Gaijin Pot also helps with finding apartments!
I have wanted to go to Japan for 18 years. I am currently in Vietnam visiting my dad and highly considering making the leap over. I have a few questions for you I'd really appreciate being answered and I'm sure you have already on another video but to be honest the connection for the internet is pretty bad here in Vietnam. Is there any easier way to contact you directly? My major concern is how you were treated because of your tattoos in both Osaka and Japan in general. I have a ton myself so it's a major concern.
You need to cover your tattoos at your job in Japan but other than that you might get a lot of stares. Tattoos are not popular here even the yakuza stopped having their people get them. Basically long story short you'll be fine but you could have difficulty finding a job if you don't cover them. If you work with kids their parents will heavily frown upon seeing tattoos on their teachers body.
@kowabunga1417 Nova was the top language school in Japan . In 2007 it totally collapsed and went bankrupt . The whole story is rather long but nova got in trouble with the government for some of its business practices.
well in japan you are safe pretty much all the time. crime is still really low here. yeah that trainer was definitely the worst i had ever experienced.
As long as you can prove that you will be useful and able to do the job then you can go over with any company but if a japanese person can easily do that job then they wont employ you, thats way english/language teaching is the easiest for foreigners. you can go over on a tourist visa and find work when you are then and then convert to a work visa once you find it but for most people do teaching and get the job before going
You were living in a storage closet? JUST LIKE ONIZUKA FROM GREAT TEACHER ONIZUKA! Lmao If you're into anime, check it out. It's about a guy trying to be a successful teacher in japan. They have a movie for it too. Btw, you have earned yourself a new subscriber. I hope I can make my way there as a teacher.
@kowabunga1417 Many students canceled their contracts with nova and sought refunds and because it's reputation was damaged enrollment dropped. This caused a financial crisis in the company. This resulted in the English teachers not being paid their ent not being paid and being unemployed in general. It was a real mess.
You seem like a real dude, like you could actually hold your own, unlike that Gimmeacockman guy. Bravo sir. Tell it how it actually is. I was amazed at some of these people who have being living in Japan for "20 years" and didn't even know the basics.
i know how you feel. I moved here a year ago. I live in Neyagawa. I have to carry a card my wife made for me that has my address and home phone on it just in case i get lost.
Take into consideration that cost of living comes into play and every place is different. In Japan, salaries tend to be higher than in the US. Everything is relative, look at this: I live in Texas and cigarettes are ~$5/pack...in New York, they're ~$10/pack...but the average wage is much higher and most people don't need cars. Here in Texas, we don't know what phrases like "public transportation" or "subway" mean, so you have to have a car and that eats into cigarette money. Plus Texas sucks. ;)
Wow, a few haters, huh. What he says is true no matter how you personally dealt with it. This is about a heads up to what to expect. I guess the haters were too super awesome and understood without doubt what to expect. Good for you and I'm sure you'll deal with the rest of life no problem. For the other weak immortals, they may learn a bit from this video. So relax and leave this video for us subhumans that can't figure out our you know what from our elbow. Really, if your so great, you should be too busy with your superior lives to comment on a site that is just giving people that are learning a point of view of what likely awaits them. Or do you really have too much spare time?
Damn... when I hear you... I'm so happy I am making money online, atleast I can travel everywhere without having to look for jobs and waste my time worring and stressing about all that shit. I wonder how much would be enough to survive though in Japan... i'd say 2000$ is the max I could spend. I'm living in cheaper places now.
LOL that's what GPS is for!! Punch in the address and go. Car or cell phone will do. Actually it's a mess but there is a kind of system, though most people (even Japanese) never figure it out.
In Japan and in S.Korea there is no street names and I think this is very misleading. Yeah... we can lead the way by memorizing landscapes and may be a friend could reach our home area... But there is no sure if they will reach our door!!! I can tell u because I have lots of japanese friends who CAN NOT reach my door appartment without get lost first and call me desperate!!!! Thats what street names and HOUSE NUMBERS stands for!!! To make easy for thinking people!!!!
I face-palmed when I read their initial reply to you...did they reread what they wrote?! And to me, common sense says that if you truly were negative about Japan, why would you still be there three years later (from the time this video was posted)? I wouldn't even take that comment as offensive; someone is just a bleeping idiot.
i think that its a general rule in any large city, the tourists always are looking up which can make you a target, so long story short, look like you know where your going otherwise things can go south. wow, trainer sounds like a jerk.
your right your funny face isnt on here as you prefer the role of one of the many faceless trolls who plague youtube. criticizing and never contributing. now thats negative.
thanks! yeah i came over with a group of 20 peeps from america. there was 2 left after 6 months. i worked in a building with 600 teachers (nova mm center). 40 of them are left. great stuff huh?
Wow! I really like how you recounted your first few moments in Japan. It must be so exciting!
yeah i do owe them that. the process of getting things in order was not easy. they did assist me there.
No, I actually have been waiting all this time for a response, and I'm really glad you answered, thanks for the info!
awesome man thats a pretty decent time to come. not too hot not too cold. let me know when you head my way.
yeah it was about 9 feet long and about 5 1/2 feet wide, but yeah my feet totally hung off the futon. one time it caused me to push my comforter off onto my space heater. melted a huge chunk out of the bastard. on the bright side at least they arent flammable.
any idea when you are headed out and what destination.
I worked for NOVA for 5.5 years and left a year before the meltdown. I didn't have much issue with them, besides the fact that 8 lessons a day was crazy!!

I would have cried my eyes out in your situation with the apartment etc. Good, you didn't give up!
I really appreciate your insights shared in these videos. Thanks for going to all the trouble and don't let the people who take pot shots bring you down. They aren't all about fairness, not by a long shot. Plus if you could see them, a lot of them would turn out to be exactly as young as they actually sound. Thanks and keep them coming :)
thank you for shering your experience
At the moment, I would like to live in Japan one day. This video is really interesting, great idea!
Rocking the Slim Shady look, Scott.
@kowabunga1417 @kowabunga1417 Nova would also pay their rent and when they stopped paying. This left many foreigners not only broke (because they were not being paid )but also facing eviction from their apartments.
nah, i wasnt talking about japan specifically, i just meant everywhere. Had a bad experience with that once and I learned the lesson the hard way.
This is some really interesting stuff. Can't wait till its my turn!
I've been to Osaka a few times. I love that place. So much to do. Nice video. Oh, some advice for anyone going: Get someone to guide you, or he is right, it is easy to get lost. I'm going to be coming over in march with interac...i have to have a 1 week orientation in a paid hotel whilst my accommodation is sorted out and they help me with bank, first day and mobile phone...btw, did you have to do a teaching course like a EFL/TEFL/TESOL

you were a Floridian :O I've never left the state of Florida, YET. I want to go elsewhere for a change (japan of course)
Well it's been 6 years since your comment, have you finally left Florida yet? You visit Japan? ;)
What part in florida O-o?
So, I don't know if you've found an answer to this question already but...
