Hahah.. the same thing happenned to me when I was in Tokyo I walked through some kind of red light district and saw those empty places and I was like WTF too. Earlier that night I was waiting for a friend for about 45mins in front of a Mcdonald's and some salaryman came up to me & asked me something in jpn which I didn't understand at the time (I'm pretty sure he asked if I was working) so then he said "Are you waiting?" and I was like "Yes for my friend!" and he apologized profusely and left..
Man, I cannot thank you enough for encouraging me to embrace japan. With all the different social problems it has, I have drifted more to the korean side. I'm young and plan on learning and moving to an asian country. Thanks for giving me a reflection and something, no, more than I could have asked for, you make me LOVE japan again. Thanks.
This vid was a lot of fun! I just went to Japan last month and there were definitely some culture shock experiences for me too. And as a vegetarian trying to find food without fish sauce I totally had your experience buying meds "sleepy no" in every restaurant! "No fish sauce? Hon dashi- iie. Katsuo dashi- iie". But people are just so nice there, they almost always wanted to understand me and help.
another great video 5/5 , i would still like to know more about phone service in japan like whats the avarage price , like whats the best mobile , best companies etc thanks .
hey I dont wanna seem too intrusive but when you say your phone bill is around 3000¥per month, Im wondering how many minutes you get with that. Like incoming calls, local calls, long distance and International? This is one thing Im trying to understand better since i have heard wierd things about the way cell phones charge in japan. Like no nights and weekends and other stuff . Anyway I love the vids and please keep them coming
wow you are right, You do have a great plan. It might be more pricey for say someone who is out partying late everynight but if you have to work the next day it wouldnt be hard to cut back on calls after 9. thanks for the info on this. also You probally use calling cards to call the states right? or maybe skype or someother internet thing.
Whoa 900$ to start a cell phone plan!? good thing you went down the street and saw that other place XD haha thanks for uploading this scott! and as usual, ~5/5 and fav'ed~ =]
lol had the same story with the cough situation but the salesperson was really helpful I just acted in front of him like making the gestures and everything he was laughing but he got what I was saying also the first night in tokyo I was walking right into the red light districts without having a clue hahaha.
LOL I had the same exact experience in the red light district in Tokyo. I was wondering why the stores looked so empty & then once I walked in I realized what kinda place it was. The interesting thing is that even the people who work in the redlight districts in Japan are polite.
pharm techs here are pretty damn helpful for the most part. although the only thing that sucks is sometimes the meds are made for smaller sized people so you have to judge how much to take yourself which i dont like to do.
just local to japan and its always free to call someone using the same phone company. my time is unlimited from 7am-9pm. from 9pm-1am i think its 30yen a min.
Yeah...I know all about that ripped off thing I was ripped off in Korea when i got my first cell phone. I had to put down a 300 dollar "foreigner" deposit. 3 years later, when I close my account, I told them about my deposit and they said they had no idea what I was talking about....no such thing as a "foreigner" deposit. That branch ripped me off :(
Just wondering, how did you manage to get a job in Japan with your piercings, tattoos and unusual hair style? At least in my job they told me those three things were totally off bounds.
:D i've haggled with big cell phone companies before!! got a free phone that way too. and i live in Montana. LOL. so i guess it just depends on the deals. i love the "if there is a cheaper deal else where we will match it" typa thing. lol lol @ the redlight district. xDD
I know that this is 5 years old as I respond to it but I want to ask whether you have found any benefit to carrying one of the phrase translators where you can read common answers or hand the device to the person with which you are speaking for them to read its display. And then they could potentially type and a short answer for it to translate to English for you. They have been around for years and a good one would have to be worth its weight in gold as long as it is able to make the subtle distinctions needed to avoid misunderstandings.
maybe there is more then 1 red light district in Osaka. The one I know, which is surrounded by a very seedy area-hidden fron tourists-have the women sitting a few feet from the open outside enterance. Very different from Amsterdam.Very clean, few tourists, and an elderly women(who rents the building)takes care of the ¥.
the only language prob that caused me a blunder was at mcdonalds , i dont eat beef and ended up getting 2 beef burgers... apart from tht no other issues cuz a lot of the culture i saw in japan was similar to mhy country india, for example they really respect others esp eleders , and are polite, they remove shoves before entering home, they are extremely helpfull and other similarities
The lack of medicine is something I'd sacrifice for all the other awesome things Japanese convenience stores have :) They're basically like mini grocery stores where you can get actual food and produce (not just snacks, like here in the U.S.), decent meals and pay bills. Which in a country where I'm assuming you can't pay half your bills online (since I've heard Japan is not a credit/debit card country that much), indeed makes it kind of convenient :)
The reason why you thought this was really cheap was because in the whole North America (Canada and USA) we pay about 10 times the prices of what they pay in Japan! We're really being ripped off here.
i would like to see that i always wanted to know more about this fashion that i saw one time i think is called lolita something like that is like girls kinda dressing like them old china dolls you know what im talking about??
Speaking of phones! From what I've seen the phones in Japan don't look as sleek as they do in America. Whats up with this?? Does Japan prefer simple designs? HAHAHA @ the red light district!
I just realized, I need to find out how to write a warning that I'm allergic to penicillin. Might be something I need to tell people, especially doctors.
Haha sleepy no no last time I was in Japan last year in nov around this time and the day before I got there started feeling sick and the whole plane ride my nose hurt but when I got there I just got a bunch of garlic and lemons and ginger roots best cold medicine it was freezing too so I just ate it all raw
haha i can relate! my first month i was in a guesthouse in kabukichou tokyo the ultimate ghetto of japan, 7.30 am walking to the city office to get my gaikokujin torokosho and get asked "do you want massage? sex? girlfriend?friend?"
No medicine in convenience stores in Germany either. In drug stores only the useless stuff, anything effective including pain killers only in pharmacies. People who sell medicine here must have pharmaceutic training, even for very mild/natural medicine. And I don't think this is wrong. Then, our drug stores do sell contact lenses which in the states I was looking for in vain.
That third story got me! LMAO! What a unique experience!
ive watched a couple of your videos and i just wanna say thanks for all the insite
DUDE! #53! You are powering these out... lots of good info tho - so keep up the good work! :D

wow thanks for the super nice comment. glad to have you aboard!
Thanks for the video. My friend went there and had similar experiences.

there is actually quite a few scattered around different parts. juso has the craziest and grittiest.
lol had the same story with the cough situation but the salesperson was really helpful I just acted in front of him like making the gestures and everything he was laughing but he got what I was saying also the first night in tokyo I was walking right into the red light districts without having a clue hahaha.
Awesome stories. What's in the background? A playground?
"Just a 100km away" haha wow, can't be easy being used to other measurements.

just local to japan and its always free to call someone using the same phone company. my time is unlimited from 7am-9pm. from 9pm-1am i think its 30yen a min.
well prices and deals vary so much and seriously change almost every 3 months my report would probably be obsolete too quick lol.

Nice FAQ. I thought the "irasshaimase!" battle-scream was valid nationwide...
i definitely wanna do one on shopping!
good story teller!
You remind me of Wentworth Miller from prison break. I like your eyes and i don't know why but your voice is very calming to listen to.
this is cool and helpful subscribed :)!
HAHAHA I CAN'T STOP STARING AT THE HOLES MAN!!! BUT GOOD STORY THOUGH!
Just wondering, how did you manage to get a job in Japan with your piercings, tattoos and unusual hair style? At least in my job they told me those three things were totally off bounds.
Ahhh... "Cough. Sleepy, no." They might have thought that you had a cough and you couldn't sleep! :)
Unsure if you did a video for this but, did you experience any reverse culture shock when you visit the US?
Some say the first thing they notice is that people are rude.
what is the best audio for learning Japanese/other?
:D
i've haggled with big cell phone companies before!! got a free phone that way too. and i live in Montana. LOL. so i guess it just depends on the deals. i love the "if there is a cheaper deal else where we will match it" typa thing. lol
lol @ the redlight district. xDD
Can you give the exact location of this "red light" district so that others do not accidentally stumble upon it? =)
