    Most tequila producers have switched from old-school methods to high-efficiency production. Has this trend helped or harmed the overall quality of tequila? We decided to find out in the most honest way possible - a blind taste test. Which method produced the most enjoyable tequila: the use of a traditional brick oven, the super modern diffuser machine, or somewhere in between?

    This is insane = I've been buying Tequilas and making margaritas for 25-years and never has anyone mentioned the methods by which tequila is made = (1) OVEN; (2) AutoClave; or (3) Diffuser.
    These are far, far more important than Blanco, Repasado, or Anejo. I just taste-tested my own tequilas with a Mezcal and the Ocho Oven Tequila blew the others away (El Mayor and Dobel Maestro which are both AutoClave). I don't even want to think of how bad a Diffuser tequila is.
    Blew my mind. Thank You! I will never again buy a tequila without knowing how it is made. It is OVEN cooked agave for me forever.

    THIS video is a must for everyone who has any interest in tequila and I’m sharing it as widely as possible. There were things I knew, but didn’t know why. Buying a bottle of Casa Dragones a few years ago, I couldn’t be more disappointed not only in the product but that I dropped $60+ for that crap. Medicinal is the one prominent note/aroma I remember from it and when I smell that in a tequila, I immediately steer away… and, now I know why. Thank you for giving me an understanding of this most important process, not to mention how it’s destructive to the industry. With the popularity of tequila in the US, we only have ourselves to blame as we demand more variety.

Interestingly I have found a blanco and a few repasados that are great for my sense of taste while in México or from aficionados. maybe it is the methods that made the difference or I originally tried tequila mixtos instead of 100% agave.

    • @GamerToday
      @GamerToday Год назад

      Easier it is to be found. Or buy researching per brand basis. Or spend money take a taste and its obvious if you drank as much.
      Need cheap autoclave? Jose tradicional repasado.
      Thats best on market to me. 45 bottles and it beats any repasado ive ever had. Mind you i try many brands. Its just consistent. And i like its smell.
      I dont drink mixed drinks but hear its good for that

    • @GamerToday
      @GamerToday Год назад

      Campo bravo repo or esplon arent bad either. Esplon would be a cocktail tequila as flavour and smell is skunky. But you may like it idk. In a mixed drink with citrus and colors i feel it would be great.
      Cazadores for example is trash to me. Or carmena. 99% sure diffuser.
      Hornitos i think is auto clave but taste like crap. So if its diffuser would not shock me.
      Want a good brand to look out for thats new and i know the owner of???
      Tres agaves.... Repo is still being worked on Reciepe wise but its good stuff. Their anejo also good.
      But the consistency is not perfect and i spoke to owner about it. They have awesome bottles though thick gooseneck wine bottles. It feels premium in the hand. Smell is great. Very raw type feel for the entire line.
      Diffuser??? 😂1 smell or taste will help you relax on that. Its so far from diffuser product borderline as raw as it gets.
      I still like jose tradicional more but its because they use white oak barrels.
      Tres agave uses bourbon barrels and i dont like that profile as much.
      I like the more agave forward taste. But natural and little smokey.
      If you want to ruin your day drink hornitos or Cazadores. Hornitos is like omg i bought this reaction for me. Its worst taste on market followed by esplon. Esplon is real but just is stinky and skunky. I enjoyed it a bit but struggle on first sips and more.

    I agree that brick oven cooked agave makes for better tequila than diffuser made tequila, but there are a couple defuser made tequilas that aren’t bad. The only flaw I see in this test is that experienced tequila drinkers can taste the difference between brick oven and diffuser tequila. They taste pretty different, not just in a qualitative way but in a matter of fact way. They’re almost like two different spirits. So it’d be pretty easy to say the ones you know are brick oven cooked (bc you know the difference) to be better simply bc you like the idea of tradition rather than something that makes more money. It’s like doing a blind taste test between a Michelin star burger and McDonald’s. You can obviously tell which once is McDonald’s even without the wrapper

    • @ldelatorre2011
      @ldelatorre2011 9 месяцев назад

      Fair point. However, because you are (not you) less experienced or not as familiar with tequila or simply cannot tell the difference doesn’t refute the fact that the tequila is truly bad. It’s more than not doomed from the start. Starts w immature agave and is made improperly.

    • @DzigaJerkov
      @DzigaJerkov 9 месяцев назад

      @@ldelatorre2011 yes, most are truly awful, but doesn’t negate the fact that these blind tasters didn’t really taste blind if they know was diffuser agave tastes like.
      Though I like to think of them as different spirits really, especially ones with additives. It’s like comparing a regular cognac and something like Grand Marnier, which of course uses not the best brandy and has “additives,” (added flavor and sugar) which makes it something different all together.
      Probably shouldn’t even be labeled as true tequila. But what is a cocktail but a spirit with a bunch of additives (juice, syrups etc.)?

    • @ldelatorre2011
      @ldelatorre2011 9 месяцев назад

      @@DzigaJerkov I totally agree with you that there is a a very strong argument to be made that it shouldn’t even really be labeled tequila and least of all “100% agave”.
      I just think because they are experienced and they may be able to tell which is which that it doesn’t really take away the point of the tequila being simply bad. Id rather have ppl with experience and risk losing out on a bit of blindness than a bunch of people that don’t know tequila and don’t really care for it.

    • @DzigaJerkov
      @DzigaJerkov 9 месяцев назад

      @@ldelatorre2011 I just think these tasters have a biased idea of what tastes good. They should be saying what tastes the most like agave. So many people love the taste of diffuser and additive filled tequila. You’ll hear additive-free tequila lovers say, “it tastes like caramel, vanilla, cotton candy, cream soda.. disgusting!” Most people love every one of those things.
      Obviously you don’t get any of those flavors from agave, and it’s not what tequila should be, but most people think vanilla/caramel tastes good. People should just be taught what real tequila is versus basically vanilla candy liqueurs.

  • @mikem4432

    By limiting the graph to only 60-100% the visual difference is greatly exaggerated; for intended effect I assume, but the line would be much flatter on a complete scale. Only a 10% difference seems remarkably close to me.
    It's becomes obvious why some corporations would cut costs if they are still only 10% less desirable than Forteleza since their products sell. I'm not advocating this. I avoid diffusers and additives but being traditionally made doesn't guarantee it tastes good.

      That's because the lowest possible scores allowed by the judges was a 60, so the range is accurate.

      @@groversanschagrin6946 : The rating for Fortaleza is 88.88 of 100, yes? 88 out of a range of forty points is closer to 72% of what's possible.
      Raising the minimum will not give the same visual result as cropping in on the 60-100 portion of a 0-100 graph.
      When my portfolio graph looks too volatile I change the base line to zero and it becomes a ripple. Both lines are correct but zero is more accurate.
      I just have too much time on my hands :-) Cheers. Keep up the good work.

    Diffusion produces "agave vodka". the additives produce 'flavored vodka'. sad.

    These are bold conclusions based on 6 brands at the higher price point. Is there a difference at the $15 to $20 price point? Can casual consumers make the same distinctions? I would be curious to see a chemical analysis for these products too.

    In my experience tequilas they use diffusers are very transparent about the process. Of course this might have been different 5 years ago. Not all diffuser companies use acid

    Alcohol taste tests simply don’t work. You can get different results using the same group on different days. Aside from this most people will prefer the most “easy drinker” regardless of all else.

    Don't touch diffuser products.
    Use autoclave for cocktails, shots and the rocks. And also for beginners to drinking neat and want to save some money.
    Brick oven for intermediates and neat. But there definitely are some affordable brick oven tequilas just not alot. At least here in Canada there isnt. There are only 4 brick oven tequila companies under 50 CAD$ here.

    The Tequila I drink is HERRADURA! They have made it the same way since the 1800s. My Tequila is better than your Tequila ‼ (Unless you drink Herradura, as well‼)
