Chuck Schuldiner Voice Change 1984 - 1998

- Showcases the change in Chuck Schuldiner's vocals from 1984 to 1998 and I decided to use the demos from 84 - 86 before the debut studio album. For those of you who don't know, their demo (Death By Metal) did feature one song from Chuck on Vocals (Power of Darkness), as Kam Lee was their lead vocalist in the early incarnation of Death (Mantas).
All credit goes to the respective owners and AlexGrindor for the original idea.

4:50 Hey! I took that picture! LOL - I wonder where did you get it from? It was taken with a crappy disposable Kodak in El Paso, April 08, 1990.
I'm not seeking credit or anything like that, I just found it very cool to suddenly see my pic there.
\m/
I think you do deserve the credit, it's a pretty good photo. And as for how I found it, I just searched "Chuck Schuldiner 1990" on Google.
@@SpoderBlitz - it cost me a few bruises to take it, but I'm damn glad I was one of those few weird guys taking pictures in that pre-cellphones era.
Thank you for making this video, Chuck deserves way more recognition than he'll ever get, but people like you are what real music needs to live on, so... really, thanks!
Cheers!
I guess im asking the wrong place but does someone know a way to get back into an instagram account..?

The older he goes the higher he sings interesting, gotta love Chuck
That's vocal damage for you
@@demonguysayshi2666 normally works the other way
@@royalmarine1011
Nah, it initially goes lower then goes way higher once the singer damages their low range too much to use it properly. Take Corey Taylor. His screams on slipknots first album were fairly mid range for most people, his iowa screams were way lower and his vol. 3 screams(once he actually learnt to scream safely) went way higher because it allowed his low range to rest and recover
@@demonguysayshi2666 Corey's volume 3 scream was the worst of the 3 lmao
Definitely vocal damage. This happened with other vocalists like chris barnes and chino moreno. They had deep gutteral vocals and endedup going higher over the years
The Sound of Perseverance, is a truly timeless Masterpiece. Im still in awe of it 22 years later.
The sound on it is like no other. Hard to believe it's from 98
The Sound of Perseverance, is a truly timeless Masterpiece, ruined and devastated by the lamest, powerless shitty cat-like whining of late-period Chuck Schuldiner.
@@user-gr6ki8sl3h ha! Umm? Ok!
Unpopular opinion, it is the worst Death album. Not saying it’s bad, but out of all the album’s, it just felt like it lost some juice. The vocals don’t have the same power and emotion in the previous albums, although it’s maybe because Chuck hurt his vocal chords in his previous vocals. Personal favorite album is Leprosy, although Human comes close
@@nerdmysteria1406 I'll agree. An unpopular opinion. I have been a fan since Leprosy. That's the album that turned me onto Death. The sound to me and many others was the masterpiece of Deaths catalogue. Like the one listener replied. Hard to believe it's from 98. But we all have our own opinions.
Chuck has/had such a perfect Metal voice and scream!
Indeed. I really liked his 'growling tone' in Spiritual healing and Human, he sounded so demonic! I personally feel that those two albums were his low growl peak until he slowly transitioned to the high growls in the later albums.
@@SpoderBlitz its individidual the transition .
I think what chuck did was like tardy .
It wasnt growl , it was stuff they took from the old heavy master they pushed at max in the agression .
But technically it wasnt growl as Cannibal, Suffocation or kam lee
There s a timber and range .
lmao no. He did sound great up until the early 90s. He was just painful to listen to him live afterwards
@@adr.marius5636 speak for yourself, CC Corpsegrinder was heavily influenced by Chucks vocals and style. I also loved each itteration of his style, while yes his later years were definitely him at his best he was still very good in his early years and has influenced a lot of people like Trevor Stnard.
\,,/
Imo, chuck sounded most legendary in Leprosy actually
straight truth,
yep!
@nils nilsson same here
For me too, and his voice on Spiritual Healing...his new voice and way of singing on last two albums I don't like at all..
Agreed
Death is still my favourite death metal band. Each album is a masterpiece that has its own charm and atmosphere.
Too!
@lukesfx yes👍
necro ! i like you soung too
@lukesfx so true
Favorite metal band, they transcend death metal. They're better than Slayer for God's sake
I love his vocals during 86-87 , during the scream bloody gore era, my favourite, so fucking brutal
Agree. Thats my fav Death album. Its so gore, brutal and raw.
To me his best vocal faze was on Human and Individual thought patterns. It was the perfect mix of growls and screams.
Agreed
Those two albums are basically the riff style of Sound of Perseverance with the vocals of Spiritual Healing, its perfect imo.
That one and Human have the best vocals to me too. Symbolic is my fav song writing wise
I wished chuck did an album with his clean vocals you hear on some demos . He had a killer metal voice
Control denieds demos have chuck singing clean power metal vocals. Apparently he was also gonna be the backup vocalist while still ply guitar.
As great as his vocals were on early albums, nothing will ever top his work on The Sound Of Perseverance to me. No one to this day has done better or more brutal sounding high-pitched growling. I know I've fucked up my throat more than once even trying to get that sound.
SPI RIT CRUSSSHEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I’m glad he took that artistic risk to showcase his higher register. A lot of people don’t know he was a soprano. His vocal range was really something to behold, just another addition to his lyricism and composition skills.
@@dinobellstien6342his talking voice was very baritonish to me
Symbolic is such a great album. One of the best in metal.
@Jose Quintanilla id hardly call it weak it was one of the highest rated releases of that year
@Jose Quintanilla no way, that album still has killer tracks. 1000 Eyes, Empty Words, Misanthrope, Crystal Mountain all bangers
@josequintanilla2833wtf? Are you okay?
@josequintanilla2833 Without judgedment? Perennial quest? Zero tolerance? the album is all bangers, what do you mean?
Would 've been interesting to include his cover of pain killer. It shows how far he can push his voice.
Death covered Judas Priest's Painkiller. I had no idea Chuck could hit that fucking high. Unfuckingreal.
The older he gets, the better he sounds! Amazing spirit!
Truly 🤘
40 y/o is not old
I think the improving sound quality helped a lot.
@@georgeb9285 The key word is OLDER, not old
His vocals got worse imo
R.I.P. Chuck. Gone, but never forgotten
Tim Hart HE IS ALIVE, BUT IN CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN WHERE HE IS WAITING TO FIGHT AND WIN AGAINST CHUCK NORRIS WITH A STAND OF HIS HAIR
i think this is an unpopular opinion but SOP is my favourite death album.
Kobe Wilson makes two of us brother
Not that unpopular, most people's first favourite album when they get into Death is TSOP (in fact it may be Death's most popular album now, even surpassing Symbolic). It was my favourite at first because I was new to death metal and some of the other albums were too much for me to handle. I'm not sure what my favourite is anymore since it always changes but I think Human is probably their best album (if I were to look at it objectively).
That’s actually a popular opinion
I saw them live on tour when that was released and it was the first album I heard of theirs so it really stuck with me. After hearing their back catalogue it's really a shame he passed away because I loved where they were going with their sound.
Spiritual healing for me, despite the muddy production.
ITP vocals don’t get enough love, blend of the badass vocals from leprosy and spiritual healing with what would come on symbolic
True
Still their best album in my opinion, musically. There were always metal vocalists that I preferred to Chuck, but the music oh man, and then the lyrics that came later on ^^
Plus dat bass doh. 😬
I have always loved his 1998 voice, sounds more like a monster to me.
It wasn't Chuck Schuldiner in vocals in 1984, it was Kam Lee, schuldiner started making vocals in 1985 after lee's departure
Yes, but Chuck actually was on vocals for just one track on that demo. Track is called "Power of Darkness".
@@filipnezak2084 nit on this demo version maybe on another bootleg, on this one and the reign of terror demo all the vocals are credited to Kam Lee that was one of the very first growlers that deserve more recognition i guess
@@l.i.v.v4835 O.K. You're obviously correct. I don't know much about those first Death demos.

Individual Thought Patterns era Steve looks like a hippie
He still does (wears a Jimi Hendrix style headband nowadays). The dude has always been that way as far as I know. He is a huge nature/recreation marijuana supporter (as was Chuck). I recall seeing some early Sadus merch with that thing on the cover of their first album smoking a doobie.

The best song for me is Crystal mountain 🤘💞
They suck ass. Idk why there was such a sudden change
You're right. The first time I heard TSoF sounded a little strange to me, because of the change of voice.

Zombies in black ops 2: 5:12
HAAHHAHA THATS SO ACCURATE ITS AMAZING
So zoombies of black ops sound like an ice cubes comercial 🤨🤨....makes sense
The vocals in the sound of perseverance is so fucking killer! Those high fry screams are so hard to do, but Chuck had them down like crazy! Pain Killer cover is truly a banger imo
His vocals on "Spiritual healing" are the best he delivered, can't say I like his style on their last album, though
One of the true great musical losses in the world. He was the Death Metal's Mozart.
On sounds, he followed the chords with his vocals ( which are also higher pitched), whereas on the earlier works he growled over the chords. The first album is my favorite.
exactly! same \m/
It really was a drastic change in sound. But these high vocals are mean as hell, I don't get why so many people dislike them :/
PTR Koulou Exactly! I love them
I’m not into the higher register that he uses on this album, although I think it works on spirit crusher. Overall his vocals mainly corresponding with the exact cadence of the notes/chords is not my favorite. The scream bloody gore sound of fast , lower tones layered over the top vocals( for the most part) was wicked as hell and more aggressive.
Same. Scream Bloody Gore is my fav Death album.
The voice on Leprosy is second to none, the brutality expressed in music, still my favorite album
He is a genious, he pass away so early....
Giada autieri HE IS NOT DEAD! HE IS IN CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN WAITING TO KILL CHUCK NORRIS WITH A STRAND OF HIS HAIR
Massive shame we were never able to get more work with his vocal style on Sound of Perseverance. The higher pitched vocals were super unique.
Chuck preferred the cleaner/less growly vocals and wanted to make music with a regular singer, and I think I prefer his later vocals as well
Interesting how His voice began had low as hell to high as hell. As if he literally was ascending higher and higher with each album
Yeah, I'm 90% sure he had no clue there was technique (TBH nobody did back then) and was just screaming as hard as he could. And that really hurt his voice, forcing him to go higher and higher
@@demonguysayshi2666 sometimes pain forces one to go higher and higher
@@demonguysayshi2666 It was his choice to do it so. It makes sense because the higher it gets, the more difficult it becomes to sing in any style.

That's because Chuck ascended from a Ghoul to a Lich.
Чак великий музыкант! С детства слушаю его музыку, очень круто! Вечная память!
Would love that somebody bring up his pick technique, absolutely flawless, accurate and demolishing alternate picking in phrases were normally anyone would use legato and pull off
Ikr? The first bridge riff in Pull the Plug is a bitch to alternate pick and I was just doing it legato a long time before I actually watched the live video and started crying 😂

I love you Chuck
Chuck is one of the few metal artist to blend deep Lyricism with badass instrumental prowess especially the Humans to Perseverance era, there’ll never be a Chuck Schuldiner one of a kind
Great video. The evolution of his voice is one of my favorite things about this band.
Thank you!
Tfw when you realize that riff you wrote sounds just like a death riff you haven't even heard yet
Chuck was too good for this world RIP
The symbolic vocals are so amazing
"Inflicting wounds with a cross turned dagger" gets me so pumped when I hear those lyrics...
His voice in Human is brutal. Not my favorite album, but my favorite Chuck's vocals.

@@nickDOTbloc Hahaha what?
Spiritual healing vocals are absolutely ferocious 🤘
Someone get the dragonballs and resurrect him!!
Idk why but I always thought high screams sound a lot more brutal than low screams. Probably because it feels closer to someone getting murdered (to me at least). The vocals on Spirit Crusher are amazing.
His vocals and guitar work both have perfected a lot.
listening to death and its hard to imagine anybody else vocals in the songs..... chucks voice makes sense for his songs..
madness
That's why listening to Controlled Denied had me wishing for Chuck to stay on as vocalist..
I absolutely love the "the sound of perseverance" era 🤘
Even to this day he had one of the best guttural vocals ever…
The voice of the Spiritual healing is as if the demon himself were singing a bestiality of voice that to this day I have not come across any similar
Its crazy how much confidence he found in his voice for Leprosy, masterpiece... even though all the albums are masterpieces.

Death is the only band I can think of that has evolved with each album and each album is a masterpiece. My favorite album go back and forth between "Human" and "Symbolic". Favorite voice is "Human". Least is "Sound of Perseverance". Was his high raspy voice because he couldn't do the lows any more or was it by choice? The intensity is still there. I like like his lower range better.
I Think he transitioned to the high screams, because he was getting bored of the low Death growl.
At least thats what i read in the german Wikipedia article on the sound of perseversance
@@user-mj3zf7iu4p the record is almost 24 years old and it still holds up, and stands out especially amongst most of what was coming out of death metal at the time. I think those vocals play a huge part in that.

If the Zombie Ritual Demo vocals got into actual album version I would love it even more
The only death metal vocals tha sound genuinely frightening
Sometimes I forget Chuck was also singer because his guitar and we writing skills were so good. Riffs or Symbolic are for me the best written ever, Crystal Mountain has like 4 sick riffs.
But as a singer that's impressive how high his vocals were on TSOP.
Thanks for using Defensive Personalities for the Spiritual Healing example. Fucking love that song! RIP Chuck Schuldiner 🤘
One just gotta love that Chuck 🤘🏻🖤
Just the Painkiller cover is enough to know that he had an impressive and powerful voice.
I think his voice/vocal style peaked at Symbolic tbh. I still like his work on Sound of Perseverance but I feel Symbolic was a perfect balance of his vocals becoming slightly higher pitched but still keeping that classic death metal style to it that he originated.
Chuck was so awesome. His music and legacy will live forever.
So good.
Voice and guitar play evolution of Chuck
Best vocals was in Healing and Human era. Never really liked high pitched voice Chuck adapted on later albums.
Personally, they are my favorite. He sounds a lot more refined and in control. His dyamicd range is pretty insane. But in summation, Human and Sounds have my favorite vocals
