  • Souled out and Space-Faced, David wows America in 1974. Visionary theatrics and mesmerizing vocals ensure that Ziggy is still very much in the building, we didn't lose him after all (phew)!.

    The "moonwalk" has been done since the 40's (probably earlier than that, but that is as old as I've seen). Bowie was trained in mime and hence his amazing movements.

    He looked so unhealthy here, I am so grateful he got clean and sober and lived another 40+ years! we were all blessed by his great artistry.

    At 1:30-1:42 , David does the leg-kick thing that Michael started doing during the 80s, too. When asked about his dance/performance influences, Michael attributed it to ...Fred Astaire. *side-eye*

    @BowieGirley Yes Michael Jackson himself admitted he adapted it from a stationary version of the walk he saw David Bowie perform during his Diamond Dogs tour (itself borrowed from mime artist Marcel Marceau and practiced by several other artists, including James Brown and Shalamar's Jefferey Daniel). But nobody did it like Michael.

    Either way, regardless on who exactly invented or started this type of dancing, you can't deny David Bowie's performances-especially during this time & era (as Ziggy) were one of the greatest that the world has ever seen. I do think MJ was inspired by him as well. David has said, "I am not out there (onstage/artist) to be normal-that's not what I do." I think MJ was truly inspired by that. As he was not out there to be normal (in public). The male-female look, make-up etc.-as well as Prince!

  • @TheJesterGirl

    I know that MJ did the moonwalk the best (from what I've seen anyway) But Davids long legs and thin frame makes it look so extremely beautiful! :D

      Ratelzwatel ... It's credited within Aladdin Sane as 'on broadway' as written by Lieber/Stoller/Weil/Mann. The Drifters had the original hit in '63, Genesis doffed they're caps to it a year later, then George Benson 😲 peace.

    Bowie comes in fuzzy on my tevee screen with this but the audio is clear and clean. He sings about Fame. Not so much in this song but he did say about it loud and clear. This song is mellower. Bowie didn't invent all of this himself. He was a very social party person though I never met him personally. Billy Joel and Elton John can dig Bowie. Also don't forget Debbie Harry with Blondie and the Wilson sisters in Heart. Tom Petty and Bob Dylan should listen into this too.

    It's walking in place, which is a variation of the moonwalk. Anyway, these are all old mime techniques and stretch back probably to who knows when. Either way, cool is cool. Two of the coolest people on the planet looked at that technique and independently thought, "There's something in this." What a shock.

      +Tim Collins Stop trying to spin shit. That was the moonwalk, ie "Moving backward while remaining in place". David did it first, and this is coming from someone who is also a Michael Jackson fan. It's okay to be honest sometiimes.

    Moonwalk was done by black performers like Sammy Davis and James Brown way before this! It's black origin street dance. Jackson is seen doing something similar to the moonwalk in his 1969 Motown Audition tape at the age of 9. Way before David Bowie.

    before Michael yes, but the move was done by a Bill Bailey i think it's the name, in the 50's and Cab Calloway later, then a Shalamar dancer taught it to Michael..since David does it on the same spot, (although it's great!) does not qualify like walking, but Michael was not open about him NOT being the starter although he did admitted in his book that "the dance was out there on the streets, not giving credit to the inventors of th dance as his steps were all from the Godfather Of Soul..James Br

    Garson never did receive his waranted share of recognition as musical colaborator, mainly because Mick Ronson got all the atention and adulation. Well thats not suprising since, in rock, keyboardists dont tend to get the same kinde of adulation that guitarists do ( I beleive it has something to do with the phallus aspect ), but still it should be noted that Bowie realy has done some great keyboard songs and had some fantastic keyboard players, like Garson and Rick Wakeman too.

  • @SayonaraMJ
    @SayonaraMJ 8 лет назад +16

    Well, this is not a moonwalk. Nonetheless, Michael never said he invented it, on his book he says that the moonwalk was all over the streets, he just mastered it and made it better.

    • @SnotRockets55
      @SnotRockets55 8 лет назад +9

      +SayonaraMJ That IS the moonwalk, which is basically standing IN PLACE but moving like you're walking. It's not rocket-science, and you're really embarassing yourself by saying otherwise. AND David did the kick thing that Michael does in this performance too, and then he spun a couple times. Michael stole all his signature moves from David. To David's credit, he had the class to not publicly embarass Michael by calling him to the carpet about it. I would have though.

      +SnotRockets55 Michael actually took a lot from Alice Cooper too. His Welcome To My Nightmare concert film is full of stuff MJ lifted for Thriller, even down to Vincent Price. At the end of it, a fan even refers to Alice as "The King of Pop".

    That has to some of THE worst followspot operator work i have ever seen.
    COMPLETELY ruins the effect of character that drove this show Bowie was doing.
    Besides being so awfully distracting. Hope whoever was running the followspot that night see's this and is embarrassed.
    Other than all that ..... great old 8mm footage of a time that seems so long ago.
