Great video as always. The UP 9000 series was the locomotive that served as the inspiration for the Soviet Union to build their AA20 4-14-4 monster.

the Russian 4-14-4 had major problems with both wheel wear and wrecking track not built to handle that level of weight.
Crews reported the engine was a rough rider as the center of balance was directly over the 4th driving Axle inducing a rocking motion. to my knowledge, only 1 maybe 2 were made, and following a derailment, was quietly retired.
be nice to see a model of it since it did actually exist and did see revenue use if briefly

The AA20 would likely be unrivaled on long, straight track (like in some routes in australia) that can support it (which can basically be modern track iirc).

My Uncle Andrew (Andy RIP 6-21-19) was an electronics wiz who ran N(?) scale and 20 years ago or so, I "helped" him wire tiny dime size speakers under each car (50+ cars !) using tiny wires (+ & -) that He soldered little magnets to the ends which looked like air couplers and were obviously conductive painted black except the contact area. He installed a sound board/card(?) and programmed it Himself in the tender. It was an isolated individual sound of a car rolling on tracks obviously that would speed up with the speed of the train. They were all the same sound but it worked, I thought wonderfully. If You knew what You were listening for You would hear the speed up change which drove Him nuts but I barely noticed even knowing then. It sounded absolutely great. That's just one of many things He did. His layout had "live ?" moving scenes etc like docks, mills, etc, etc, etc and a real water fall, I could go on and on. I'm not a scale train guy but this was sure neat and brought back memories, I spent many hours with Him there. Thank You, nice engine(s)....

My Legacy has the chain on the sand dome (my MTH model does not) however, MTH's roof vents open. Performance - I give it to the Lionel Legacy model, level of detailing - I give it to the MTH model. I really do like the moving third cylinder though, just like the 3rd Rail model.

Nice review. I have the 2 volume Kratville/Bush book set on the Union Pacific type locomotive and I don’t recall ever seeing a photo of a 4-12-2 prototype with chains connecting the sand dome covers. Lionel probably eliminated the chain because it was not prototypical. I imagine they added it to the 2012 version because the chain made for a convenient way to pull the cap off.
The sounds are great. The locomotive has 6 chuffs per driver revolution just like the prototype and they are even a little uneven, which happened on the real 9000 class engines. One other interesting thing about these locomotives, which was probably captured in the Lionel model, is that the drive wheels are not “quartered” 90 degrees apart like a conventional 2-cylinder locomotive. The drive wheels on opposite sides are 120 degrees apart.

Been watching your videos for years now. Fantastic review! Its made me want to get back into the hobby that I haven't had the time for. Curious.... Why doesn't Lionel add a feature for the steam blow down effect? This would just add to the realism. They already have the sound for it so might as well add another smoke feature.

The coolest rolling stock that I've ever owned were the Lionel 6-19868 Animated Alien Transport Aquarium Car Area 51 Groom Lake (x2), Lot of (3) Operating Radar + Animated Alien + Biohazard O Gauge Trains, and assorted other Area 51 Cars. I never had an Area 51 set however. I wanted one though.

Hi Eric, not a train modeller, but Lionel's early models had the feel of tin plate, which I can never get enough of, never quite to scale. They look now close to proper scale, would you agree?
