@@ThePsycotrip no. They would have to be pulled. Assuming there is an image of the data available they could be reflashed but I'm surprised "experts" don't know enough to not expose them to light.
Exactly!! WTF. Should have been in the dark. Should have covered the eeproms with stickers. I have Honda ecus from the 90s with similar eeproms and they deemed it appropriate to put sticker on their eeproms!
Not many people even know what they are sadly. Only reason I know is because I found a box of chips and had to look them up . But it is a scary thought if the thing was bricked.
I think Kelsey's hair is probably one of the cleaner environments that cartridge has come into contact with. This isn't like the Great Isaiah Scroll or anything, so It'll be fine
@@joshualane1716 Presumably she put the gloves on to protect the board from the oils on ones fingers, which is pretty much foiled once you touch something like your hair. But you're right, I'm sure it'll be fine. Just an interesting observation.
Do you have some video/link to something that shows this in practice? Just generally curious. I don’t go opening games often/ever, but want to know more about the topic.
Rig - Except in rare circumstances, most normal games don't have EPROM chips and it's not a concern. Prototypes and custom reproductions very often have them. Many (but certainly not all) developers practiced covering the window back in the day. Half of the prototypes out there have a foil label or white paper label over the EPROM's UV erasure window. My brother and I found a prototype Xexyz. Like many other prototypes, the erasure windows were covered and the build info was written on the labels. An opaque label would block stray UV light from entering. Stray UV light could theoretically flip some random bits, changing byte values and introducing corruption. It would usually require prolonged / concentrated UV exposure to fully erase the chip (as you would do before programming it again), so some people incorrectly believe there is no concern at all for leaving the window exposed. Someone may say "I never cover the windows and I've never had a problem," but it's certainly possible for momentary exposure to flip a bit. Why take the risk? A small corruption like a single flipped bit might never be obvious. It would probably remain perfectly playable. Or it might crash at a certain point / scenario much later in the game. Or it might not work at all. If the game seems to work fine with some small unknown corruption, and then someone dumps the game ROM a couple decades later, that person might incorrectly assume they have discovered a variant code revision - because a few bytes would be different after comparing with other dumps of this title.
Man I don’t even know Metal Jesus in real life but he acts a lot like my best friend from 1st grade and I’m 37 now. I could drink a beer with this guy. I appreciate everything he does for the old gamers.
Seeing as how it only has 100k views and his most popular video only has 2M, I'd say its unlikely he gets the 10 million views it would likely take to earn $20k from adsense on this video
I still remember being 7-8yrs old and going over to my cousins house. Across the street was a kid a year older than us 2 and he had older brothers (at the time they were in high school around early 90s). long story short he had this NES game with numbers and sliders on it, and had a generic label. Still blows my mind that laying around in the basement play room of a middle class suburbia in nowhere, NC was this cart.
This is like a amateur version of the Vegas pawn shop show but better Because we know it's real and it's some normal guy so we happy to see him be able to profit off a video game instead of seeing some guy like the pawn shop stars getting rich ! And I heard you didn't take a fee that's an honorable thing my Guy💯👍👌
Yeah, in the back of a store there wouldn't be enough UV to do it, but I would have immediately masked them with tape the moment I had that open just as a precaution
Dude this was a historical moment caught on film, fucking awesome. Also that universal scenario of "you first-" , "no you first-", "ah okay", as you walk through a door with another person is so wholesome lol.
Just love it when people are working on PCB's on carpet or fleece blankets to "protect" them from damages 😅 Heard of Static charge? 😅 Old electronics are probably not as sensitive as new when it comes to static charge but with this expensive cart I wouldn't take any chances.
@@Marius-vw9hp I would use an wristband and antistatic mat just to be sure. These old IC's are probably not as sensitive for static charge as modern IC's but with a $15k cart I wouldn't take any chances ☺

You just sold one for 23k, and it didn't even had box nor manual! The others are way more complete so I'm sure they are worth at least twice as that!!"
Adam Johnson probly same amount as theres serial numbers example in this video he has 287 and they mentioned someone on ebay selling 333..... the real question is how many were destroyed or thrown in the garbage
I feel bad for the nintendo execs for just handing them out like candy. If I was a nintendo exec and I knew these would be crazy collectibles, I'd so "lose" like a few of these cartridges and get fired for it
Is not that, The Nintendo world championships had about 5-10 set up stations and the finalists were the top 5, the rest were either raffled or given to the store. I saw a kid that was a finalist very happy because he traded his prize copy for a full retail value game from someone else. The store manager wanted to sell me one for 30.00, I was like "no way, dude" I don't regret it, back then we all were very stupid.
@@zirkoni42 under normal lighting conditions it would take a fair bit to erase it. That said, when you're dealing with 20k piece of electronics that is designed to be destroyed by (admittedly specialised) light, it would be nice to be careful opening it up somewhere bright. If someone at home saw this and opened one up they could destroy it
FYI for anyone taking one of these carts apart like this, those two chips with the little clear circular windows are EPROM (erasable programmable read-only memory) chips and are where the game software is stored. These chips are erased by exposing those windows to UV light, so be sure not to leave the uncovered PCB out for long or ambient UV light will eventually wipe them. Best to actually cover the windows with a bit of opaque tape. They can be rewritten with a special programmer but (1) you may lose a unique ROM images no-one else has, and (2) someone would need to desolder and re-solder the chips both potentially impacting the value of the cart.
This was an awesome find! Why can’t I have a family member with something like this tucked away! 😅 awesome of you to help this guy! You and Kelsey are awesome!
Those are windowed eproms that will get erased if you leave them out of the cart too long without a label over the window. Should probably cover them up when opening. (edit: used EEPROM instead of EPROM in my comment, oops!)
You’re right! But the overhead lights from my shop for the three minutes it was open absolutely won’t erase them. It takes much more serious exposure than that, and I wasn’t about to put tape on the board as the serious buyers are (understandably) quite picky. It will likely never be opened again.

I love the reality TV style of this video. Keep it up!

Exactly!! WTF. Should have been in the dark. Should have covered the eeproms with stickers. I have Honda ecus from the 90s with similar eeproms and they deemed it appropriate to put sticker on their eeproms!
Not many people even know what they are sadly. Only reason I know is because I found a box of chips and had to look them up

If I was opening that, I would be ready to immediately cover the EPROM erasure windows with some kind of opaque tape.
Yeah, I was just shouting at the screen. COVER THOSE EPROMS!
If the game seems to work fine with some small unknown corruption, and then someone dumps the game ROM a couple decades later, that person might incorrectly assume they have discovered a variant code revision - because a few bytes would be different after comparing with other dumps of this title.
i was mildly freaking out
yes please put some electrical tape over the window!

I still remember being 7-8yrs old and going over to my cousins house. Still blows my mind that laying around in the basement play room of a middle class suburbia in nowhere, NC was this cart.

The two chips with the windows can be deleted if put under UV light these should be covered with tape
Was thinking that myself.
Yeah, in the back of a store there wouldn't be enough UV to do it, but I would have immediately masked them with tape the moment I had that open just as a precaution
I'm pretty sure the last thing Kelsy was gonna do was put some sticky tape on such a rare cart.
Kelsey should know better than to expose them
No it should just not be opened again, now that it’s been authenticated

Just love it when people are working on PCB's on carpet or fleece blankets to "protect" them from damages 😅
Heard of Static charge? 😅
Old electronics are probably not as sensitive as new when it comes to static charge but with this expensive cart I wouldn't take any chances.

@@Marius-vw9hp I would use an wristband and antistatic mat just to be sure.

You just sold one for 23k, and it didn't even had box nor manual! The others are way more complete so I'm sure they are worth at least twice as that!!"
What’s fascinating is that this WASNT given out to a finalist...which begs the question, how many more of these are out there??
Thats not how collectables work. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Seeing those EPROM windows exposed in full lighting hurt.
Yes I am shouting right now they may be destroyed, stupid gurl, but she use gloved right hahahah FUCK
Maybe there were no fluorescent lights? And even if there were it would probably take several minutes of exposure before the first bits are erased.
@@zirkoni42 under normal lighting conditions it would take a fair bit to erase it. That said, when you're dealing with 20k piece of electronics that is designed to be destroyed by (admittedly specialised) light, it would be nice to be careful opening it up somewhere bright. If someone at home saw this and opened one up they could destroy it
No mention of ESD protection. Not a wrist strap to be found...
@killerpot. stuclaire EPROM chips are designed to be erased by high power UV light.

It's like the Greed Island of NES cartridges.
Very interesting. Amazing the amount of rare NES collectibles that show up in the Seattle area. Not so much where I live, lol. But i'd never drop over $20,000 on a video game. Congrats to Tim and his brother. And to their parents for not throwing it after all those years.
