      MetalJesusRocks back when I used to own a shop restoring cars I painted several fiberglass statues like this. Any decent automotive paint shop can restore this no problem!
      I worked for gentle giant studios as a contractor painting Navi for Avatar and some other things too when I lived in LA for a stint and again I just used Automotive paint and techniques.
      Hope that helps

    I'm not expert, but based on what it looks like in the video, if it were just a patch job, the edges of where it chipped would need to be sanded down, but it also looks like it is sun faded (compared to the fresh one shown in the game room)... but I didn't see it in person, so maybe the color is fine, idk.
    At any rate, it may be easier to get the whole thing repainted and clear coated, in which I would probably suggest an auto body shop. I would see if steve can take 360 degrees worth of photos for reference on what color goes where, etc.
    Other than that, it would fall under the umbrella of local artists that are familiar with painting fiberglass, or resin statues, which I'm not sure how you would go about finding one, outside of maybe finding an artist group on facebook, but that might turn out sketchy and you'd want to find references of their works to make sure you get the best and most reputable person for the job.

    • @hingeslevers
      @hingeslevers 6 лет назад +2

      Yes, auto body shop is the way to go!

    • @ChronoMoogle
      @ChronoMoogle 6 лет назад +2

      Same goes for Fox Mc Cloud to be honest, he needs a fresh paint shop. Maybe it's possible to ask the producer of these which color tones they used? Might still be in the project archives.

    • @gzzzt
      @gzzzt 6 лет назад +1

      Repainting (at least the yellow) would probably be the way to go. Matching the color to retouch it would be very difficult, and probably the least of your worries.
      Auto shop sounds like a good place to try; seems like Seattle would also have some people with experience in restoring vintage store signs etc.?

    may be a bit expensive but the best bet to restore Pikachu would be to take him to an autobody shop and let them give a quote on repainting it with automotive grade paints, if Kelsey is looking to DIY the project then the response from Access One is what should be done.

    hey, autobody / paint guy here, I would say sand it down with a light scotch pad on the yellow parts because thats pretty far gone and mask everything off and painting it with a spraycan and a clear coat should bring it back to life. as for the blacks and reds just go in with some hand painting to touch up some of the areas.

  • @MistressNeviah
    @MistressNeviah 2 года назад +1

    Dunno if Kelsey fixed it yet or not but a good avenue to look at is grabbing a bunch of paint samples for a color match, grab an airbrush, mask off the parts that you don't want painted using old newspaper and tamiya masking tape, spraying it with the airbrush(gives it a better finish) and then using a gloss varnish to blend it in. Personally I suggest leaving a little bit of surface area of the old paint so it has a little extra space to blend in just in case you cannot find a 100% color match which sometimes is the case with a lot of retro and vintage collectables. I wish the best of luck in this endeavor and hope that it can be/is restored to its former glory! ^.^

  • @Samcasm2wo

    That is a fantastic statue and Steve's game collection was on point. Possibly the best way to go about restoring the Pikachu would be to match the paint as close as possible and then just sand the entire head minus the eyes and cheeks and then just repaint it. I don't think it would look good just touching up the spots. Though you might get away with touching up the smaller scratches on the body.

    I had something like this done before. I used a car dealers paint shop. Had them reproduce the paint colors i needed. Than I bought brushes and rollers to retouch. In your case you want different sized paint rollers and maybe some small brushes. The rollers will make it easy. No brush lines. The car dealers paintshop can get a perfect matched paint you need. If I lived in Seattle like i used to, I'd do it for you. I've been painting Dungeons and Dragons miniatures for years. Any who, good luck with your pikachu. That's one awesome find.

    If you have any buddies who work in automotive paint shops, they have these spendy portable camera/scanner things that can get you the exact codes for matching paints. If Steve will let you come back and scan the one he has in better/less faded condition, you could get paint that matches his exactly.

    I suggest stripping the paint, then having the original color matched at a hardware store. Then you need to cover the eyes and ears and any non-yellow or chipped surfaces before re-applying the paint. To achieve the original gloss finish you will have to have it air brush painted, similar to how a car is painted. If you want it done cheap and easy, ask a local car mechanic if they will do the paint job. May seem silly, but they will most likely do it for cheap if you cover the cost of paint.

    I’m sure it’s already been repaired by now but in my experience figures like that are fiberglass if so your best bet is to gelcoat them. It is something you could have done at a boat shop. You could also DIY it with gel coat and an aerosol sprayer. It’s something I’ve done a handful of times in the past if you want some info on it DM me.

    It doesn't look that bad, I would sand down the chipped parts. These are made of injected plastic not resin, if it was resin then you would see some really big cracks. Also the paint used on these statues is funny, you can't use auto paint these are coated with a plastic type paint, the same paint that is used on some action figures. And the the clear I think it might be a vinyal clear coat. Anyway to save money I would just think of something that would cover up the paint chips, maybe add a paint brush to the statue and cover over the chips with other colors to make it look like he was painting.

    Lucky it's mostly on the yellow doesn't look like fiber glass so guessing it's two part plastic mold, you can prob treat it like a car body panel. So fine grit sand paper to smooth out the chips, primer and UV clearcoat. I would avoid anything with an acetone base and if useing isopropyl use 50/50 with distilled water. From the looks of Kelsey's twitter photo might be worth revamping the left side looks like that's starting to lift.

    Your best best is to bring it to an auto body shop so they can paint it. It's gonna have to be sanded down to level off the peeling. Obviously it's gonna also needed to be tapped up correctly and they yellow color matched. That would be my best guess but it's def possible.

  • @adamamegaming1730
    @adamamegaming1730 6 лет назад

    I think the best thing to do for restoration would be to sand it smooth, prime it, and then just repaint the whole thing. Maybe do a base coat with a couple rattle cans, but definitely go in for the details with a good airbrush after. Then clearcoat it.

  • @BigRed4231
    @BigRed4231 6 лет назад

    I would tape of the areas i dont wanted spraypainted, then coat it in a white spraypaint primer, maybe 2-3 coats, then 2-3 coats of gloss yellow spray paint.
    Alternatively, and even better, if you have a spray gun you could spray it with a matte yellow and then apply a laquer with the spray gun for a very smooth finish.
    In any case, do it outside, protection glasses on and wear a mask that protects agains aerosols.

  • @tomhanks491
    @tomhanks491 6 лет назад

    My suggestion for restoration would be to reach out to a well-regarded auto body shop in the area. They will be able to match the paint and paint on the surface. It will be a goofy conversation, but I am sure they would do it.

    Kelsey find a place where they do custom auto paint work and have him completely repainted, and while you're at it see about getting Starfox a few more layers of clear to make him shine more too.

    Best bet if you want it done right is to take it to an auto body shop that comes highly recommender by someone you trust. They will have the knowledge to repair, repaint, and seal fiberglass correctly. You could try and tackle this yourself but with a rare piece it will never be to the standard someone with the proper equipment could achieve. Hope this helps. All the best.

    take it to an auto paint shop. they can match the color and add protective coating. easier to do it in a paint room with spray than by hand.

    Hey man, I've got a few friends that actually can restore this stuff. I would recommend blasting it all off since Pikachu has faded over time and just have it repainted.
