Has Football Manager Changed in 5 Years
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 сен 2024
- Football Manager 2023 seems to have brought a lot more frustration to the fore than past renditions of the game so I thought I would do an interesting experiment, I would go back and play Football Manager from five years ago to see how different it really was. No googling, no cheating, just downloading FM from five years ago and firing up a save.
How familiar is the match engine? The tactics screen is the same? Maybe? What new features have been added to Football Manager in the past five years? I honestly can’t even remember what the last five feature drops were. This will help jog that memory and is another chance to try and pick up a WIN ON FOOTBALL MANAGER WOO YES THIS IS SERIOUS LET’S GO.
Much Love,
FM Senpai

10:02 “due to club protests about scheduling, the 2022 World Cup will be moved from Qatar to Australia”. Love that from FM
Considering they predict transfers... maybe they thought there was a chance to leave qatar?
@@GarkKahn
I believe there was a chance for it to fail and for it to pass. Same with Brexit, it was not a guaranteed event.
Happened in every save I did.
@@honestjohn7513 had to happen, because the game couldn't handle the scheduling issue of one world cup being held at a different time than the others
@@niks2392
It can happen. The scheduling just gets a notification for the season to start earlier. It is mostly just more to make it X-2021, 2022 scheduling, 2022-2023.
Great point on tutoring! Remember Franck Ribéry? When his contract with Bayern Munich was up after the 2017-18 season, he took a pay cut to remain with Bayern because he specifically wanted to tutor Kingsley Coman. Tutoring happens in most pro sports, an older veteran takes a rookie under his wings and serves as a personal mentor both on and off the field. Hopefully that feature will return.
now its a gem if you can find a tutor for a younger player, they more selfish than 20 years ago. But i still remember an interview of Baggio who says no one of the older on in the squad was able to help him, which i think is like cycle. Happens now and then but not all the time
I’ve always wanted Zealand to do a save on an old fm to see how good he is. Imagine him managing Freddy Adu
Yes.... but not as much as we would like to! Simple! 🙄
How to start a war:
Just play FIFA
@@tuomaslilja1027 ... Well... On the "Managing' side is millions years behind ... still .... and will never be as thats not the type of game they want to be also. EA just wants to grab more teenager wallets so they even put a Burguer truck simulator inside Fifa for after game entertainment just to get those players who also like restaurant tycoons!
@@theaemulator yeah. I play fifa and FM shamelesly, but im dreaming if a game with FMs management(a bit simplified) and fifa gameplay! EA are greedy bastards, so they will never anything remotely close to that!
This is exactly why I buy it every SECOND year. The new bells and whistles like the Data Hub - I don't even use.
I feel like the biggest miss FM have done is that they’ve simplified tactics. Looking at the old screens, it seems there was so much more personalization that could be done. Seeing things like “clear to left flank” and “take a breather” or “hold possession” would be incredible to have now.
Yes, or at least provide 2 options for us. One for more advanced managers and one for beginners.
WibWob would blow your mind.
I disagree, it always sucked when you first made your FM save and your tactic flat out doesn't work and you lose 10-1 in your first friendly
I disagree on this so much.
15:57 Look at the synchronized moonwalking from Basel's defensive line! Actually amazing
Alli, are you OK?
@@ivanov4999 Are you okay, Alli?
You've been hit by, You've been struck by, a smooth criminal
I actually love the fact that this clip was made. I do watch Zealand but I still play FM 18 because in FM 18 my favorite team starts in the 4th tier of Romania, and it's real challenge to bring them back to their glory days( 4 times champion and UEFA cup semifinalist).
Romania naturally generates a lot of "fallen giant" save candidates because almost every team is being mismanaged financially.

An U Cluj fan
Football Manager 2018 was my first FM and that intro song will always be a banger
As someone that went from FM20 straight to FM23, it was extremely different in my personal opinion. Not only the game engine but the every IG day experience feels different. The only major thing that they have slept on and they have no excuse to make is the international football.
FM23 also feels a lot "smoother" than FM20, which is quite important for people like me whose computer is below average.
How did you get the crack version, I can't afford the fm23 now
@@omokaroelliot1942
I didn't find a crack version. I found it for around 40€ and brought it. You can buy it at cheaper if you don't get it from a big brand shop. Perhaps around 35€ as well right now.
@@WERTYUIO821 okay thank you for the update bro
@Kabelo Ntsala thank you bro appreciate
And there is me playing FM20 because it was free at Epic Games Store and dont have money to buy a newer one :
I need to have a look at FM11... It was nuts in it's difference, but near post corners were still OP
FM11 was my first FM, and animations aside it has aged pretty well. Newgens weren't hideous either, though admittedly 12 was a more improved version of 11.
@@guguy00 Fm 12 was the first fm I ever played, I still remember those days of buying Niang, Griezzman and Muniain and rocking the world.
FM 11 the stadiums look so much better , the stadiums in the last few years has got so much worse its embarrassing.
They still have multi story car parks FFS
Remember playing FM 11 back in the day. I was around 13/14 at the time, and I had just moved with my family to the countryside and we had no internet for a few months in our new home. It was during the summer, so I was off school as well and didn't have much to do. I played the shit out of FM 11 during that summer. Loads of fun. I remember having Neymar in my team and another striker called Khouma Babacar.
I recently watched a video on the FM 11 match engine and to be honest, it kind of shocked me how much better the game looked graphically. The lighting was far superior to what it is now. I genuinely had the impression that the game had always pretty much looked the same, and I think that a big chunk of this community thinks the same way. I really don't know how many people are aware that the game used to look better. I see a lot of people mentioning regen faces which also obviously used to look way better, but I almost never see anyone mention that the graphics engine ingame was significantly superior a decade ago to what it is now.
I started playing FM last year to escape from FIFA's utterly disgraceful treatment of their player base with barely noticeable upgrades each year for full price... I didn't know I was just joining the same exact thing a year on from that now. I can't believe it.
At least EA does some decent holiday discounts than SI.
The thing is fm does small updates every year and larger updates every other year. if you have a look back and go from the likes of Fm17 where I started to now it’s dramatically different in how it plays it may look the same but the standard of life changes the tactical changes all show how much SI care. The difference in the last two editions is that fm22 was so well received the already announced additions weren’t ready for fm23 such as womens football so they did smaller upgrades. Fm isn’t like fifa in that it’s the same game every year because the match engine changes every year for better or worse and they systematically update sections.
@@ahmedramisoufari8820
You can find FM a lot cheaper if you don't buy it through brand name shops or streams. I brought mine for 40€ while the online "Stremers discounts" had it around 50€ at the time. You can even buy it cheaper if you make a Turkish account because of how much their economy has fallen recently.
Sports Interactive will steal money from anyone that is willing to waste way too much money while also keeping their casual fanbased entertained with minor changes that they ask for. They don't expect their fans to actually but the game each year.
@@highcue FM Xbox edition legitimately has microtransactions. Regular FM has its Editor, which should not in any circumstance cost real life money, especially when mods offer free alternatives that are just as good or debatable better than the monetized counterpart.
@@WERTYUIO821 FM 2022 was $49.99. This year it's $60. Even when I pre-ordered it and got discounted prices, it still cost me $48, alot more than most of the world is paying. SI are overcharging American users which I've been vocal about in the past and mostly ignored. It's disgraceful and FM 23 is the last FM game I will ever buy.
Emotions for team talks are so much better than gestures. It's so frustrating when you selected gestures prevent you from saying certain options
been loving your Taunton Town save, I absolutely agree with your frustration with the set piece system. It's literally the one thing we can have the most impact on in a game and it hasn't changed whatsoever. A more intuitive set piece system is honestly the only thing in my deep dark desires shortlist for this game
The set piece thing is actually work, because now it is completely broken. Like half the time it won't even let me select the taker, and if you change mid game, it the kick location doesn't take effect until another kick later.
I went back to FM20 recently and was actually surprised by how much was different/worse than FM23. So while it might not progress as fast as we like it definitely moves forward
FM 2020 is a nice version. still play it
Yet the game moves backwards as well
What SI give us in one game they take away other features with another.
I would say SI are lazy developers
They change things for the sake of changing to appear to be new.
Only change is the player movements look a little bit more realistic
@@steve10 they are extremely lazy developers. They have a pretty loyal fan base and it’s shocking how the game doesn’t see significant improvements. I am also not buying until 2025 or maybe even 6 it still looks like I am playing a game from 2006.
I've played FM for closing in on 20 years and I'm still playing FM19. I have no desire to upgrade to 23. The differences are clearly there, but they're nowhere near enough to bother going through the learning curve or more importantly, to abandon the save I've been playing for multiple years and loved. Some of the upgrades to FM I find to be more effort than they're worth - even the slightly more complex training in 19 compared to 18 I never bothered with - it's just not fun. And even in 23 I don't think the match engine and presentation look good, so I'd still play in 2D.
I miss the “Show Some Passion” manager shout from the older games.
Hey Zealand, I have a video suggestion/request for you;
Could you please explain us how the fifa world rankings works? Are they even used for anything? Why is Belgium still freaking top 5?? And much more questions that could be answered.
Thanks, keep doing good stuff, you're great 💪
Tifo discussed this in one of their world cup podcasts...
FM2018 is my second most played game on Steam (behind FM2012) so this was extra interesting to me. As a 2D overhead user, I feel a lot more understanding of why I've felt the new games have been stagnant for a few years. A lot of the things I use the most have barely changed. Maybe only buying every other year is the smart move after all.
Great video.
I think, unless you are a content creator, or there is a major overhaul in a particular year, every other year is a decent option.
That's how I've been doing it since 08.
Remember when we used to bench a player every time he was on less than 95% right before the game? Good times
You overlooked one of the QoL changes for the worse - the mouse cursor no longer disappers after a few seconds and you have to drag it away yourself. Minor, sure, buit never fails to annoy me.
I've been playing fm 19 for the past 4 years and been applying the advice you gave on training and scouting from the newer games and it still works
This was my first FM! I ended up preferring 19, I think that's when they added in depth training and abusing training was how I got Dulwich Hamlet to threepeat the UCL and Prem by 2033 lol
You didn’t shout “Get Creative”! Almost a instant highlight afterwards when I used that
As if moving players between others was that much easier in FM18. It was a pain in FM20 too, but is so much worse in FM23, it's effing infuriating.
I like u23 and u20 being in the menu. When I go to dev center I'm almost always looking for squad to find a player, so niw it takes more clicks to do so.
Just put yourself in charge of training and they come back I don’t ever change their team training from what the coach recommends but it’s nice to have the teams there
Go deeper! Go another 5 years, and another 5 years...
FM18, FM13, FM08, CM4, CM97/98, CM... the first one, OMZ it fits perfectly!! You have to!
This is the version I still play. I've gotten all of the ones that have came out since (usually for free or heavily on sale) and just never got into them in the same way. Too much busywork, a worse and less customizable UI, and the match engine has only gotten worse. Also, no conference league in this version!
Maybe it's a minor thing but I feel that the new editions have better contrast in the menus and that makes it feel more "premium"
I genuinely feel like for most games that aren't yearly this is the difference you'd expect with 1 update
Zealand's comments about wanting crowd sounds to continue when you pause the game in-match show that he's clearly never played FM at work when the boss has walked in, or when his other half thinks he's busy replying to his backlog of emails.
I welcome the match sounds stopping!
I already wasn’t happy with fm23 but after watching this it makes me hate it more. Unless there are big sweeping changes to fm24 I will not be buying a new one until things are made better. It’s sad to see how little they have improved the game overall in 5 years.
I'm older. I remember when they still Championships Manager, and you could literally move the position "with" and "without" ball.
Fm18 was my last one purchased. I still get pumped to play it when I hear that intro music.
It really is fiddly to move players around in their positions in the tactic screen! Thank you! Thought I was the only one lol.
All this video did was make me miss my 2018 spurs team, thanks Zealand
I still play fm15 (cause im broke af), and watching Zealand's videos always get me like, "wow thats cool, wish my game had that"
Why didnt u get fm20 when it was free
@@bkak2245 Cause I didnt know it was when it was free 🤷♂️
I'm still playing FM 2018 in a league with my brother and a friend. We are currently in 2036.
Hey Zealand I was hoping you could do a video on attribute searching. Ideally you would cover the best attributes for all the roles but that would be way too much to put in one video so I was hoping for something like stuff for these general roles
Goalkeeper
Traditional CD
Ball playing CD
Defensive W/FB
More aggressive W/FB
holding midfielder
Worker bee midfielder
Creative midfielder
Traditional winger
Inside forwards
Attacking midfielder
Target man
Advanced forward
Supporting forward (DLF, F9)
Obviously you could cut it down or change some of the groupings I just hope it gets a video in any capacity
I mean the game just tells you which attributes are most important for each position
Everybody's free to play however they want but scouting throught attribute search takes a lot of the fun away from the game for me. It just makes it so easy
Also with masking on you have either everything masked or different attributes masked so you can't easily compare players. If they're scouted you can just compare them directly and choose depending on what you want from your player directly
@@stevedomique9278 that's not how attribute searching works, in attribute searching you choose the most important 3-5 attributes not every single one the game says is needed
@@kiweping5 yeah but the game literally tells you the key attributes, and then the important but not vital attributes and then the rest with the color scheme on the attributes page. All you have to do then is decide for your tactic whether it's more important your advanced forward etc can finish or dribble. I don't see how it needs a guide
Anyone who WANTED that song from the intro of FM2018, it's: Chase & Status and Blossoms - This Moment
11:46 I like the moons. Can I please have that on the next Zealand skin?
I bet SI loved this video coming out!
Honestly, this is my fm game, can't leave it, come back to it from ti.e to time :) love it
I'll keep my FM21 save and keep playing with that one. The only thing that irks me a bit is the fact that I would have no updated teams and with a two year gap differences would be big if I started over again... Maybe if on sale...
i think if players are all u care about u can get a database update to play with 22/23 squads
@@miniblitz3971 Finding a proper one for FM21 is not that immediate though. I do also have to say that if I were more invested like some years ago I would look at many more things in detail. Time is an issue.
Have u found a recent database for fm21? Im still using fm21 too cz i thought theres not much change worth enough to upgrade
Message before watching so will be interesting to hear Z but in pre 2014 I sunk 750+ hours into each game for years and it was great while at school / uni etc but then life happens and started playing less. Next one I got was fm19 and a good barometer is... If I get 1 hour for every £1 spent then that's incredible value for money. From fm19 I barely achieved this and that's still what I have installed. With Z twitch, I'm better "playing" fm23 through streamers videos which is a strange turn of events. Overall, i feel the changes from game to game aren't significant enough your probably best wating 2/3 years in-between for real differences unless your racking up the hours
As someone playing in 2D I would love to have the customizable/moveable in-game panels back. In 2D there is so much space on the sides that you could use.
I *wish* I could go back to FM18, you're lucky.
I feel like this should be a thing you do with each new release
Forgot about the game always moving the 2022 World Cup from Qatar haha.
oh how i loved the percentages!! Pls bring them back
18:42 Wow, they even changed the direction of the stripes on the field!
I'm sticking to FM 17.
-better and more realistic 2d view which literally feels like you're watching the match from a drone
-more simple tactics menu
-''Due to club protests about scheduling, the 2022 WC will be moved from Qatar to
-the world cup format stays the same even after 2026, with 32 teams instead of 48.
Love to see Zealand managing as Justin Timberlake in FM18
Still playing FM19, loved the video
its certainly changed since i started playing i played first version and in 1980s i played a footmall manager type game on my zx81 1k memory they were stick figures (yes im an old git)
Was just naturally expecting you to load up FM14. 2018 being 5 years ago is disgusting
the tactics and team instructions seems miles better in the older version, mentoring seems nice as well. Staff responsibilities seem more accessible there too from the looks of it.
3:40 the reason why I'll be sticking with FM 2022 until there's set pieces overhaul
The games match engine is literally aids win too many games you'll play against a 352 every game and guaranteed a loss.... fm23 is literally a step back other the new CL
Some of those things that aren't in anymore will probably return at some point as "new features"
From SI's smoke and mirrors section they use to fool us every year
I was watching a streamer play fm 2022 a lot and he ran into a bug where, if you max out your training upgrades before youth upgrades, it will act as if there are no available improvements to youth facilities until training has degraded back down from max (which obviously takes a very long time). I remember the same bug in CM 03-04 the last time I properly played an FM game with a long term save.
That's why I only buy a new FM atleast with 5 years inbetween. SI don't deserve the money for the minimal work they do
I'm still playing FM17. How does it rate against the later releases?
I miss the condition/sharpness percentages 😞
Anyone else infuriated by the bugs in FM23. Been registration issues for continental competitions since release, but hasn’t been fixed. Had made a pentagon challenge even harder than it normally would be when you can’t register 4-8 players from your team for no reason. Sort it out, SI.
It feels easier year after year. I picked OFI Crete with no budget available and immediately found myself challenging for the league. I was expecting a 3 or 4 year challenge to get to the champions league, not beating Besiktas 6-0 away in my second season.
I play FM16. Set pieces are identical.
I actually play FM2018 and have updated age, player transfers etc. I have no life.
Lemme know if you want the update :)
I always played FM with the sound off 😁.. I don't think I'd ever notice music
That intro song was goated
the hat makes you funnier and more entertaining, especially the themed hats incorporated into the video, I think your forehead distracts me otherwise
13:16 i miss those match panel
An interesting look would have been to look at the first FM version and then compare it every 5 years after that until 23 and you will probably see a number of things that progressively improve. Each FM kinda builds on the last, to add a big new feature they probably have to add it in a smaller format and then build on it on the next year.
The yearly release cycle really doesn't give them the time needed to make the big improvements some people want. I would be happy if they skipped years and just released DLC for data updates for the game instead. They'd have more time to work on features then. The problem is they would lose money that way, so they'll never do it I expect. Though being on Xbox/PS5 might make them want to make the game more engaging and improve the looks of it.
Definitely need to bring back one on one tutoring
Unless people stop buying the game, especially the big streamers skipping the year, SI will keep pumping out this little to no change each version nonsense. It is a shame
Yeah fm18 had a bumping song on the intro screen. Still play my York save every few months or so (won the UCL in 2032)
Man I played 2018 for years lol. Also holy shit Zealand and I are the same age down to the same month.
If this is the rate of change in 5 years maybe in half a century FM will start to resemble a decent game.
One thing that is different is that I sometimes have trouble when I advance to the next day. I listen/watch YT while I play FM, so I Alt-tab a lot.
Unfortunately , this year I experience interference in the video playback when I continue the game. It even crashes , sometimes, which has never happened in previous years.
I've only been playing since FM20, but I think the game is greatly improved
5 years? How about 15 years?? I still play FM08 religiously so let me know if you want me to do something comparing FM08 to FM23! It's WILDLY different!
To summarise: 5 years and only cosmetic changes
Give me back sweepers and the Wide Forward cheese.
Only on minute 3 but damn how did they manage to make simple drag and drop worse when they had it down before...
"clear ball to flanks" was goated...
...i miss it so.
This. Is. AWESOME......... Or Sparta, I can't remember...
Zealand, PLEASE, do another video where you take a look at FM2005 !!!!!!!!!!!! And if you don't have it on Steam, I will gift it to you, if you do that video/stream. Pretty pleeeeeeease ;)
Hey Hammers: Is Zealand going to win the Champions League this year? I stopped watching streams since FM23 dropped.
I played FM 2009 and i think the set pieces stuff was the same BACK THEN
Something went bad irl, the game said it the world cup will be played in Australia......
I think they are asking us to pay full price for a game update... I am like why!? Its not like they change anything that actually matter in the game like being apple to control our finances to a larger degree or bringing in better grafics in or changing how big events feel to the player. If you win you kinda get a meh feeling instead of a cutsceen of you and your team being cellibrated by the hole town/country or having headlines in the local newspaper.
Lacklustre development, no innovation, arrogance and stubbornness "we know best, the community knows nothing" type of mentality. How many features did they add in the last 5 years that the COMMUNITY wanted? Seriously think about it... We want overhauls to the morale system, transfers, international management, and most importantly the ME, yet we get rewarded with dynamic manager timelines and squad planners. Barely anything that really improves the game has changed since FM18. And FM23 is in such a state rn that's its actually bonkers. SI aren't some indie company, they are a TRIPLE A STUDIO. "They can't keep getting away with this" - Jesse Pinkman
Spot on.
Am I the only one who still play with FM18?
I still play 2016 when I’m fed up with the new versions. Less micromanaging and so much simpler to enjoy as a game which it is. It gets repetitive and tedious on the newer versions but granted to counter that the match engine is a lot better at least.
Fm18 was my favourite 😄
Missed opportunity to play a sweeper and show what it does fml
The lack of enthusiasm for this year's version is quite staggering
Mansfield town u18s with a solid win there]
How big is the team on football manager? Because that has all the effect on just how much they can do year on year really.
I never played this game
I joined this community when 19 was just released
The problem with FM is they change things for the sake of changing them. If they released yearly DLCs with player data and released a new game every 3-5 years it'd be much higher quality
Hey Z, please update Zealand Live with your Taunton game. I'm in Vietnam and rarely get a chance to watch Twitch :(
