    The Liverpool sides of the 1970s and 80s are often regarded as the best club sides of all time. And with good reason, under Bob Paisley they won 6 First Division titles and 3 European Cups, and in 1983/84 they won the domestic treble.
    But how good were they? And which was the best? Well, there’s only one way to find out - with Football Manager 22.
    Host Iain Macintosh is joined by Tifo’s Joe Devine, JJ Bull and Alex Stewart.

    Whenever any Liverpool goalkeeper is brought up, my dad immediately compares them to Clemence, then proceeds to curse the England coaches at the time for not picking him.
    I mean, the man conceded just 16 goals in 42 games in 1978-9, and holds the record for most clean sheets EVER (460), so he has a point.

    Loved this series and enjoyed this little addendum to it. Interesting to hear Iain’s comments on the debate about which teams to use. If the late 80s team wasn’t modern enough, there were other options besides the Istanbul team:
    2001 treble winners - many of the same players as the 05 team, but arguably better with the likes of Berger, Murphy, Fowler, Owen and Heskey
    2006 FA Cup winners - the same Istanbul team but with Benitez’s reinforcements in Reina, Sissoko and Crouch, plus the Gerrard of the Gerrard Final
    2008/09 title contenders - mentioned in regards to Gerrard, but this was the peak of Benitez’s reign with Reina, Mascherano, Torres all involved
    2013/14 title contenders - brilliantly vibes team with Gerrard, Henderson, Coutinho, Sturbridge, Suarez and a young Raheem Sterling, but Mignolet in goal with Skrtel and Kolo Toure at the back. The perfect Joe Devine team.
    Still, Istanbul was the peak of many Reds’ fandom and I was happy to see it included. Spoilt for choice with this club!

      The stats for the '05 team here are VERY generous and seem to be based on what the players could have been, or what they were in their peak, rather than who they were in 04/05. 04/05 already in the games Kewell did manage to play he showed nothing of the dribbling and mobility he'd had at Leeds, Milan Baros here seems to be based on who they thought they'd signed in '02 based on his youth but not the player he turned out to be.

    • @harrymcmullen2227
      @harrymcmullen2227 2 года назад

      @@Tridentus they are generous - maybe not “very” generous? They did get to that final by beating a very good Juventus team and maybe the best ever Chelsea team. Many of the components of both the 2001 treble and the 2008/09 title push were already there (Carragher, Hyypia, Gerrard, Smicer, Hammann, Riise, Alonso, Garcia all took part in at least one of those).
      Then again, they did finish 5th.
      As for Kewell, Rafa praised him on MNF a few years ago, and it was the 04/05 Kewell that Rafa worked with. The exciting winger we signed from Leeds had gone, but there was a very technically sound player there who could hold the ball up, cut inside from wide, get chalk on the boots to cross and finish. I wouldn’t have started him in Istanbul but I’d want him in my squad. What do you remember of him? Are Rafa and I wearing rose tinted specs?

    Ian Rush - truly two-footed, watch any goal compilation, brilliant header of the ball and could shoot and score from anywhere not just a speed merchant at all. Go watch old clips of Ian Rush, or especially watch his old highlights (1989 FA Cup final is a good one), or of Kenny Dalglish.. Rushie was the most obvious one where his clips still look ridiculous reminds me a lot of Torres the way he could finish from any angle and I'd say there's currently zero players who can do it like he could. Dalgish stands out across time for his lateral turns in the box receiving to feet, and his through balls which remind me of Gerrard/Debruyne.

Heighway would start in the Middle but constantly look to drag the Center back out wide Left, allowing Kennedy to arrive on the end of crosses in the Box. Keegan was fantastic & considering his reputation Tommy Smith could play a bit.

      Not sure if I'm too late for this, but the book is called, "I Don't Know What It Is, But I Love It," which is kind of ironic given that I didn't know what it was called, but I loved it.

    Wasn't part of why Grobelaar was so "eccentric" was that he was taking bribes to make mistakes?

    • @thegreathadoken6808
      @thegreathadoken6808 2 года назад

      Truth needs to be told. I saw him receiving a bribe on video one time for throwing a game at Newcastle in the mid-90's. I absolutely thought at the time that he didn't look like a man who was doing such a thing for the first time. He casually chucked that pile of notes on the sofa like he did it every week.
      That was a sting operation. It was on camera because they were trying to catch him in the act. Why would they be doing that if they didn't suspect him of accepting bribes in the past?
      Grobbelaar took bribes on the regular, I've never been so certain of anything.

      3/4 are part of a series, would make sense to finish it before moving onto the next club.
