An abstract scenario but hear me out. If you take over at a lower league club and your star player comes to you on day one and asks to leave and you offer them out to clubs and a club 2 divisions above you offers you a fair price and the transfer goes through and at the end of the season his new club gets relegated and your club gets promoted and you end up playing against him then you have to select hard tackling. Just to teach him a lesson.
I usually go for Man Management, so he handles the players better, Judging player potential and current ability so he knows which players to focus on with his instructions and suggestions and tactical knowledge so he actually knows whatahell he's doing when suggesting things for my formation. But again, it's all speculation, not even SI knows what the attributes mean and most of the times the numbers are completely useless.
@@jrman413 I have actually looked at this in the past in all the knowledge forums. Motivating for good suggestions on the team match talks and my fav for an Assistant is level of discipline if yours and the assistants are high it will lead to less player complaints.
Great guide, I’ve been getting good results on my Club Brugge save when setting them myself. In previous years I would just leave to the assistant. However I never really thought of the impact of telling players never to do something. I just used never tight mark on PSG’s front three to great effect. 0-0 away and 3-1 at home to me in the UCL!
I used to press nearly every player, attacking forwards, good decision makers, poor decision makers, poor 1st touch. Perfect timing with the video as I have question the tactic and tried to do it less.
I always force week foot on wing backs and lbs and rbs, and tight mark always on any strikers and wingers. Currently 18 games unbeaten and haven’t conceded in 9 in the Serie b with a team projected 12th
Perfect example of a fail here: Set both my fullbacks to man-mark opposition wingers but forgot to change my Corner routine so when they countered my fullbacks deserted the centre of the park to go man-mark whilst their Striker ran through unopposed to score a goal.
I know this comment is old but this is just so silly. The game / players must be able to make correct decisions based on the context of the game thats being played. Makes no sense for players to just abandon good defensive positioning because you want them to man mark the wingers.
I’ve always set opp instructions as Everybody closed down (thought it would aid in a gegenpress tactic) Hard tackle folk who play on wings, att mid an strikers. Then full backs, gk, weakest CB and wingers for their actual weakest foot. Will try what you say for a while, then possibly revert back to how i was previously. Cheers Zealand 🏴
Great video, you could do a second part to this take a champions league final and go through opposition instructions to counter a better team. Keep up the greatness!
A video on surprisingly important/hard to find pages. Like the formation analysis. Buried several layers deep, but incredibly useful and easy to forget.
Always felt opposition team instructions have a negative impact on tactics. I've done a few games testing with and without opposition instructions and without always had better results.
Gave my Libero to tight mark a striker that was getting free on goal on long balls and it basically bought me a win against the top team in my division on the road as the second place team.
@@zachgravatt5571 I've noticed on the assistant advice they only recommend me to do hard tackling or put players on there weaker foot so I pick those ones they seem to do no damage
San Jose coach does full man marking across the pitch. Some how made Adrian Heath look like a tactical genius when out centerbacks caused chaos in the box
I’m with Denmark u-19s right now and this is what I’ve learnt. Check the national pool regularly and send your scouts to the players you’re interested in long before the international window because you don’t want to risk not knowing how good they are when you want to be playing them. Also don’t set up a really complicated tactic that they are not very familiar with. I keep it simple and my players have a good understanding when they arrive (this is important because you don’t get much training time with them)
The less I began to alter with the assistant managers recommendations of opposition instructions, the more successful I became. Could of course also be because my team was gradually becoming better. Now I only remove hard tackling from the center forwards and add man marking to a slow (not great dribbling) world class attacker.
Tight marking Offensive threats, players you can dominate physically, low speed and dribbling - High speed and dribbling Pressing intensity Poor mobility, dribbling and control (especially threats) You using a narrow formation against wide players Defenders with poor concentration and composure
in my Man Utd career I always put the Always Press, Always Close, Tackle Hard and Show on Weak Foot on every front player and midfielder (for Liverpool and Man City I put this on all players except the CB's and GK) and it works for me so well every time playing a 4-3-3 - though I may start using some of this every so often
for players I'm looking to hard tackle due to their weaknesses I like to also tight mark, that way they won't fancy those 50/50s and are often made the culprit for turning over the ball. I tend to only do this on attacking players and sometimes players in the middle of the pitch where they lack aggression, anticipation, and work rate. aside from that I mostly let the assistant dictate the rest
Supposedly no. Players learn how to press as a team and depends on the tactic. Opp instructions are buffed when you do defensive training, because that works up the attributes individually
Yeah I usually press and mark the opposition's more dangerous players and turn them on their weak foot if they're one-footed players, especially wingers, and if I'm playing against a team with some tired players I almost always go hard tackling. Doesn't do much except maybe tire them a bit more and utilize their tiredness? I don't know Edit: so I almost always mark and press strikers and wingers and press any attacking wingbacks they might have like Trent when I played Liverpool. I lost 2-0, but I barely saw him on the pitch.
Always mark the opposition strikers. And I use my wingers to man mark the full backs so they are effectively out of the game, and able to get past them on counters
As a default I tight mark, high press and force onto weak foot the opposition CAM if they have one, generally the most creative player on their team and if I force him to make less than optimal passes (sideways is better than a clean through ball) and just tend to bully people to playing in front of Badiashile and Big Yerry Mina as I'm Everton

I never understand how specific opposition instructions interact with team instructions. When you have tight marking on in team instructions, does that mean you’re tight marking all opposition, etc
I worry about that as well. I worry it will pull people out of position to mark someone. like a left back following a mid/forward onto right side of the pitch.
When you have tight marking as a team instructions, you tell your team to mark the opponent rather than the space. So your players will get closer to the opponents, making it harder to pass balls into their feet but opening up space in behind. If you tell someone to mark a specific opponent they will mark that guy regardless of his position.

Hard tackling is great against opposition players (common in lower leagues) who have HIGH aggression but (relatively) LOW strength - especially if your general team instruction is to "Stay on Feet". 2 questions... If your CB or DM or whoever has the 'Marks Opponents Tightly' thing, is he naturally going to do this in spite of the instruction, or will he just be better at doing it when asked? Also, if you are gegenpressing or just generally doing a lot of pressing via your tactic, do you need to set the closing down to always or will it be happening anyway due to the tactic, and if you tell them not to close someone down, will this just confuse them if the tactic is telling them to close down?
