    I usually don't do a premier, but this is going to be something special. I'm doing a joint 2 part premiere with Dave from @justthewatch . He got a blue version of the Orient Star Explorer, and I got a black one shortly after. So we decided to team up and release both reviews back to back. So mine is this Friday ( February 7, 2020) at 7:00 pm CST (GMT-0600) and Dave's will follow at 7:15 pm.
    ruclips.net/video/Ow8MSIp_xiA/видео.html
    Cheers!

      @@kiwicory100 I don't have the Khaki field, but might so a comparison with the khaki king sometime.
      Between those two I think the Orient has a better case finish than the Hamilton. But movement wise not sure which would be better.

    weeeeeel i got one. Gray dial! here's my review! ordered it from a dealer in Hong Kong, paid 386 euros for it. On the site it said it was made in 2015, i don't know about that but fine. Here's a few things that a lot of reviews missed: 1. The strap - it is built in 2 parts, a hard part that is closer to the lugs and a softer thiner part that continues. The soft part is relatively easy to conform to your wrist, while the hard part takes the most time to break in. I learned a trick you can do, just apply some face cream or a creamy aftershave on it, don't overdo it or it will kill the glue holding the leather layers together, but apply rub and wipe, don't soak it and it will help with the break in. 1. Crown action: this bugs me, when you set the time it has this quarter of a turn where it does nothing except jolt the entire set of hands back and forth for about 1 second on the dial sector. I don't know for how long Orient has been making these watches so 2015 seems like a type-o or just wrong info or it could be right in which case i'm not sure how the lubricants inside the watch are at this point. Inside the movement i did notice a smudge or excessive machining on one of the sprockets like it was supposed to be polished but they shaved some of the decorative pattern found on the automatic winding bridge on it, or could be an oil smudge, not sure. Didn't get around on measuring the accuracy yet as i just got it, but i will and report back. Other than that the watch is beautiful and feels good quality, it's about all i expected it to be after watching reviews and looking at pictures. It feels solid, has a surprising amount of depth to it. I did initially want the black patterned dial on it because i like the cooper brushed hands and cooper brushed indices, but looking at the hands from one side they are pretty thin and have this feeling of tin foil so i went for the fully painted ones as they seem to have more material on them. 3 - HANDWINDING - feels great aaaaaaand when you turn to screw the crown it it keeps on handwinding. Good thing it has a clutch to not overtighten the spring. The GRAY DIAL is warm, feels nice, not visually painful to look at, has that vintage lume, is clean and just a pleasure to look at and just the right amount of contrast. At a certain angle in bright light the dial contrast is like magically turned down to like 20% where everything disappears into the gray dial, it's a cool effect. Reasons why i got the watch: coming from 2 previous orients, one of them being the defender i had 1. accuracy issues, hated the blue-gray dial, thought that it wouldn't bother me as it was just a slight shad of blue but it was a pain to look at. 2. front sapphire crystal: i don't mind the watch having scuffs and dings and scratches overtime as it gives the watch some character and that old watch feel that i just love, but i do hate scratches on the dial a lot. 3. really came to appreciate a cleaner dial. 4. On regular orients it seems like the company has this thing where the dial is a lot larger than what the hands cand reach and i absofuckinglutely hate the seconds hand that doesn't reach all the way to the markings, and this watch solves that OCD aspect of my brain.I hope this helps!

    I bought this Outdoor model in deep blue about 10 days ago, and I am really happy with it. The strap is too stiff, but I “worked” it until it softened. Accuracy +6 seconds a day, and looks good on my 7 1/8 inch wrist. Great watch for $500 tax included.

    I’m seriously considering this watch Shane. Both you and Dave have showcased the watch perfectly. And I always enjoy your strap shows... I like the mix of aviation and field watch aesthetics. It's great and I'm still enjoying it. The 21mm lug width can be annoying, but mines stayed on that green ostrich one in the video. The hard part is finding one for a good price. Prices seem to be all over the place.

    My favourite watch of this year which was released at the end of 2019 was the Orient Star Sports Outdoor in Green. I call it the Orient Mountaineer as apposed to the Seiko Alpinist and Rolex Explorer. Orient Star is the Grand Seiko of Orient. This Mountaineer is way cheaper than an Explorer and way better than an Alpinist. I tried the Alpinist on and the dial real estate was way too small for me. This Mountaineer has a beautiful Green dial, cream patina markings, good lume, 50 hour power reserve indicator, black PVD case polished and brushed, good quality mocha brown leather strap, diamond style screwdown and signed crown, see through caseback with nice perlage and gold touches and all for around $630 USD. I was so impressed at the quality and value I bought it and couldn't be happier! 😊 The Mountaineer is a true field watch that does to the Alpinist what the Kamasu did to the SKX. Great video, please do a review of this Orient Mountaineer as you will not be disappointed!

    The strap size 21mm is fine as Rolex just introduced the same size with the new submariner, so 21mm will be much easier to find soon! 😊The strap itself is actually good quality. Its not cheap and hard and not super soft and expensive, it's in the middle soft and comfortable. As its a Japanese watch the straps are on opposite sides, swap them around and it is perfect! Size is perfect for me.

      Thanks! Short answer is that Epson (Seiko-Epson) bought Orient about 2009.
      Longer Answer is that the Seiko Group is composed of a number of smaller independent companies. Yet the big three are Seiko Holdings (Seiko Watches), Seiko Instruments (Makes components for Seiko Holdings), and Seiko-Epson. Which Seiko-Epson not only makes components for Seiko Holdings, but also their own watches with Orient as well as everything electronic that has to do with Epson.

    I like having a date window, but Orient seems bad at this. They often make the window so small that it overlaps the numbers unless looking straight on. Also, they appear to stamp cut the window and leave the area around the opening slightly distorted. They don't always do this, but when they don't use a framed date window, it usually looks like an afterthought.

      I would recommend a Hamilton 38mm field watch or an Orient Mako II I own both and I have a 6 1/4 inch wrist and both wear well on my smaller wrist size. So the lug to lug dimension is about 47mm on both watches which is the upper limit for me. The Hamlton is a pure field watch, but the Orient is an watch that could fill either a watersports or a field watch application.

  • @LectioDivina33

    Beautiful watch and value for money. I would buy this size wise in Green over the Seiko Alpinist and stopped short at the very last minute of pressing the pay now button on ebay for $412 USD. I ended up pulling the trigger on a more dressy Seiko Presage SARX029 Urushi dial $1000+ USD and dont regret it. 😊One thing I noticed in your macro shots is the brushed finishing on both hands is not perfect. Did you notice and does it bother you as an outdoor watch? I still may purchase this for outdoor use later on. Great video!

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 года назад +1

      Thanks! That SARX029 looks awesome!
      They finish looks a bit odd zoomed in, but don't notice it much in regular use. However, I did notice that it catches the light very differently than say the bezel. As such it helps it stand out more. Which is why I think they might have done it that way intentionally. So just more of a rougher brushed texture than any sort of mistake.

    I imagined me this could be an alternative to the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto. There are some major differences, the Hamilton has a more traditional field watch dial. You would really need to like this dial style to go for this. I’m really not into it.
    I have noticed a lot of field watches do have display casebacks. He Hamilton Khaki Fields have them, as well as Soen Glycine Field watches. I think it’s always nice to see ce to see the he movment. Seiko even did it for the new Alpinist.

      Oh! Here's an idea, Teddy Baldassarre and TGV have both done "top X regrets" styled videos for beginner collectors- and that may not require too much footage of specific watches themselves. YES! LUG WIDTH!!! I do not understand why Orient continues to use a lug width that makes it really difficult to find compatible straps. One of the great joys of watch collecting is changing up your look by slipping a different strap on your favorite watch. I tried really hard to not buy this watch, because of the damn lug width.... but eventually resistance was futile. The unique hands and power reserve kept calling to me.... and soon the damn 21mm lug width seemed less important..... But come on Orient. Scrap the 21mm lug width... and while I am at it, why the obsession with open heart watches? They are ALWAYS on sale everywhere...... probably because many people don't like the look.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 года назад

      Update: I love this watch. It suits my style, looks great, and keeps great time..... BUT, I am really starting to hate the strap. It is stiff, and unforgiving.
