    Seiko is my favorite watch company. With that said I’ve purchased three Orients over the last three years. I own an Orient Mforce Bravo, Triton, and recently purchased the new 2020 Mforce. I’m definitely thinking for dollars 💵 spent that Orient is definitely the best value watch out there . I’m also noticing that every time I see the newest or latest Seiko that’s priced over 1k there’s an Orient watch that’s equally as good or better at half the price point.

    Hey Shane! I have to thank you - this video actually tipped the scales of consideration and made me finally decide to go get this watch. And I am absolutely amazed! Thank you so much. Honestly, everything you said in the review is spot on, and then some. Especially when it comes to the wearing comfort. The dial really is gorgeous while the hands are something to behold! The entire watch is an almost perfect combination of elegant, sporty, casual and dress notwithstanding the Roman numerals. I actually bought the watch a couple of months ago and I still find myself getting lost in the absolutely amazing beauty of the watch. Finally, it also looks amazing on a black aligator leather strap or a bit more casual brown or British racing green calf leather straps. The only complaint I would potentially have is (agreeing with you) the white date wheel. Honestly it doesn't really bother me that much, but I agree that a black date wheel could have been a better choice. Overall - it's definitely a keeper!
    Cheers!

    I recently got an Orient star open heart ( RE-AT0001L) . It's very similar to the one shown on your video ( similar movement , bracelet, casing ). I also have a Seiko Sarb033. I would agree that the Orient is better in terms of finer details in the dial, appearance of the movement, and especially in the bracelet. Overall I would say that Orient has more value in terms of watch quality to cost.

    This was obviously a very difficult watch to capture with video, especially when you are so good at photographing all of your other ones in your other videos. I can see glimmers of great interest in specific shots but most of the time it seems very dull and boring. With so many shiny surfaces it's impossible that that's the watch's true character. But this definitely seems like one that must be experienced in person to get an authentic impression.
    Thank you again for the great review.

    This watch is listed on the Orient Star website under the "Orient Star Contemporary" tab. Looking at it, two things stood out: the case reminds me of the Seiko Presage "Sharp-Edged" watch, and the bracelet has looks very similar to the one on the Sharp-Edge watches. The place where the Seiko stands out is the dial design, but then it also has an MSRP at $1000 USD. This Orient Star, besides in black, is offered with a white or blue dial. I'm really sold on the Orient Star, which is a serious "under-the-radar" brand in the States (outside of the enthusiast market).

  • @bigwilliearmitage
    @bigwilliearmitage 3 года назад +4

    Nice review. Personally, I don't see this as STRICTLY a dress watch, especially the white dial version on leather. This can be more versatile to me and that's one of the plusses here. No watch is perfect, and I don't care for the Romans at 12 & 6, but it's not enough to ruin the overall look. I have been looking at mid-level Swiss watches and the value here is truly amazing; also true compared to recent Seikos. Orient Star is making some beautiful, high quality watches at prices that make comparable Swiss watches seem ridiculously overpriced. (which they often are, even at grey market prices)

    Orient get things so close to being right, but there's always a bit of a compromise. If you're not a fan of the numerals or bold power reserve on this then the Orient Star Basic Date is a great alternative, but it is 43mm wide and has 21mm lugs. I have the silver dial Basic Date and it's a beautiful watch, but I wish it was 38mm, even with my 7.5 inch wrist

      Recommendation then is a Standard Date, but the series from back around 2015.
      WZ0031DV was one of them, the one I have is WZ0041AC- 10.9mm thin, and 39mm case diameter, great dial texture and electric blue sunburst. Case is very reminiscent of the SARB033/035.

    Greta review , Shane.These Orient Stars offer fantastic value and the finishing is absolutely superb for the $$$. I have the dark green open heart model and am super impressed with it. The blue dial one is also worth considering. An often (shamefully) overlooked brand. I also have the burgundy dial Kamasu, only complaint is with the piddly crown with crown guards that make it very difficult to screw the crown back in and the $2 piece of crap clasp. I purchased a fantastic jubilee style custom bracelet from Marc at longisland watches to replace it (haven't got it yet, as covid has really mucked the international postal service around).

    Great video.
    I have a Sarb033 and macro lenses. Honestly looking at the finish quality on this Orient Star especially blown up with your macro lens - it’s not in the same league as a Sarb. The indices and hands on the Orient look so rough by comparison. The Sarb looks better the closer you look.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  9 месяцев назад

      Well, part of the design here has bits of the hands and indices brushed for more contrast. Although in a lot of ways it doesn't matter as much as because the SARB033 is unfortunately gone. It was something special that may never truly be replaced.

    • @dennischen8887
      @dennischen8887 8 месяцев назад

      I disagree. I own an Orient Star Retrograde, Orient Star classic, Grand Seiko sbga001 spring drive, and Marinemaster 300. I have to say the dial and hands quality of the OS is about 70 percent dare I say when compared to my GS and at least on par with my mm300. Both being significantly more than the Orients that I paid less than $250 a pop. I doubt the Sarb is comparable especially when factoring the value proposition.

    That VI/XII indexes are not exactly my cup of tea, but somehow they look good on this watch. Orient has a way to make Roman numerals look great: I usually don't like Roman numerals, but I love my Bambino v2, which is Roman numerals all around. A very good watch if you dress daily in a classic style: not exactly a dress watch for black tie events, but if you like your jacket and tie, it's great.

    Really lovely watch. I have an older style Orient Tristar FAB00005J9, with a nice almost sky blue with amazing sunburst, non hacking or handwinding, but it's OK for me, and an orange bezel Mako XL, that I love. Both are high quality finished, can't say my Mako only has a little backplay on the bezel, because it has absolutely no backplay whatsoever. I'm beginning to believe that Orient has a higher quality standard than Seiko which can be hit or miss, though I must say my 5kx does have perfect alignment and no bezel backplay either. Great review. I think an Orient Star is definitely in my future, not necessarily this one.

    it's a beautiful watch, however the roman numerals make it lose some of the versatility the SARB has. my only other complaint would be the white background on the date complication. the SARB033 has a black baground that helps making it blend with the rest of the dial. Of course, there's also that status the SARB has in the community that adds a certain X factor to it in terms of collectibility.

    Mostly agree with your conclusion about this watch, overall its amazing. The beautiful bracelet is one of the first things I noticed. And while I generally like a power reserve, this one bothers me for some reason. In terms of other dress watches, I have a Dreyfus Swiss Made automatic that I paid around $200 for. And right now you can buy an Eterna Swiss Made automatic in a 40 or 42 mm on a bracelet for around $400. So for me, the Orient doesn't represent good value at the $500 price point.

    damn what a coincidence! I was looking for reviews for this model few hours ago and couldn't find any good once in English but I had a good feeling about this watch so I pulled the trigger anyway. and now you upload the video! and I am very happy with my decision. the only thing is that I do not think it fits into dress watch category. I think it is more everyday sports watch. it has lume 100m water resistance, bracelet , not so thin. definitely not a dress watch in my opinion.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  3 года назад

      I think that was one of the reasons TUS recommended it, a few videos but none really in English. When you get it let me know what you think, and if you still think it gives off sports watch vibes in person.
      Cheers!

    • @Mattw1987
      @Mattw1987 3 года назад

      @@RelativeTime I find the finish on the orient more to my taste due to the brushed sides compared to the polished sides on the sarb and the lugs on the Orient are eye catching to me especially with the polished section right at the end of the lugs which is angled, the bracelet is also a major plus compared to the sarb for me with the finish of it and feel. Glad I got this watch in the end, its a keeper for my small collection due to having the power reserve which I find rather handy at times when I wear my other watches.
      Thanks for the video as well, as I think this may be the first real review of this watch in English I have seen, hopefully it will help perspective buyers of the piece.

      The Retrograde was gorgeous. I remember its only real flaw was being a bit thick. I think it was like 14.25mm. Which considering the movement and everything going on is understandable, but a bit big for a dress watch.

    Each time I see Orient Star reviews I feel like they don't hold up to macro shots. In this example the indices look rough/dirty, and I've seen on other where the case finishing just doesn't seem impressive. I may be overthinking it, as otherwise this seems like a great piece, and in everyday wear it would never be noticed. Anyways, thanks for the great review.

      I’d love to. If it’s the one I’m thinking of, I saw them on Orient Japans site a while ago. Although I think the MSRP is a couple grand, so it’s a bit out of the budget right now. If I can barrow one, or get a discount to buy one I will, but so far no luck.

    Nice review. I particularly like how you described the effect of the case sides down to the lugs. I'm not really feeling the big roman numerals... I see what you are saying about the vertical line, but they seem a bit jarring and out of place. The datewheel doesn't bother me that much because there are so many other white elements on the dial.

    • @RelativeTime

      I knew that was one thing that a lot of people wouldn't like. Orient has a number of other watches that keep the indices more consistent, so maybe they felt like they needed to do something different on this one.

    This review reminds me of one of the first you made that drew me to your channel, that is, your review of the Orient Star Retrograde. I myself have an Orient Star Open Heart in gun metal, which has a case finishing like this Standard, that is outstanding for its price. In my opinion, these watches represent Orient Star at its innovative and unique best.
    Could they be used as dress watches? I think yes, though they are not for everyone. However, if you want a look that goes beyond a clean dial, stick indices and dauphine-style hands, then you should give these Orient Stars a try.

    I had one. Sold it. I choose Sarb. But this OS is a level up from Seiko. Quality is outstanding. Cons are - the lume dots ( unnecessary ), Roman numerals (matter of taste) , white date wheel ( matter of preference but I think most would choose the black one). Non of these is a deal breaker imo. This one is one od the most underrated watches on the market.
