      Whaaa? She gives everything away! 😂😂😂 She literally gave key points of the entire plot of the episode away in the first 10 minutes.🤣🤣🤣She immediately answers any questions Sam has, even though the answer is a) key to the rest of the episode, or, b) about to play out on the screen.
      Also, the whole screed about 18th century Buffy's "undone" hair? The answer is they used different wigs & nobody was as concerned about it 27 years ago as Maria is today 😂 Even Sam looked perplexed that she was going on about it so emphatically. 🤣

    Buffy doesn’t do many Halloween episodes but when they do they are some of the best. Spike actually being intelligent with technology even though he is from the eighteen hundreds, it is something that makes him stand out as a vampire, like he actually kept up with most Technology, like the video camera to study Buffys fighting techniques a lot of vampires wouldn’t even know what a video camera is. no spoilers but R.I.P Robin Sachs who played Ethan Rayne, he tragically passed away in 2013.

      To be fair, the master also kept up to date to some degree. Notably, he made the comment about the earthquake being a 5.1. The Richter scale was introduced in 1935, but for a thousand-year-old vampire that's practically brand new.

"Willow said fuck!") which had the whole run of that scene together. I haven't seen it in either the actual gag reels or the gag reel bits online. I think the final season DVD had a compilation of season outtakes, which left out a lot.

    After Buffy became her costume she was no longer wearing a wig. It is now her real hair. How she wears her hair morphed into either a combination of her wig and her real hair, or just an interpretation of the state her real hair was under the wig in the color of the wig.

    Just so everyone knows When shoot in ga warming shot at people or animals ( mostly animals) you’re supposed to shoot above their heads, Not at their feet or by their shoulders like they do in most movies and shows. Also corsets were comfortable and made to fit each person perfectly, they were made by measurements. The bustles in the skirts actually made the dresses easy to walk in because the heavy fabric wasn’t on your legs and the skirt moved with your hips. And they had GIANT pockets like two huge purses under the skirts! Bernadette Banner and Abby cox. They are box on youtube and amazing knowledgeable dress/sewing historians and Bernadette has guinea pigs ❤ ( I also have a corset made to fit and it’s so comfortable)

    It’s funny, because Larry makes fun of Xander for being protected by Buffy/a girl (the whole hair straightener comment), but you know if she was there, he’d be terrified. Because people ARE genuinely terrified of Buffy. XD I just always assumed Buffy’s hair wasn’t long enough to get that perfect, coiffed hairstyle that she wanted for that period piece look. Her hair is pretty short in this season, since she cut it at the very beginning. Really, I kind of sympathize with Willow in this episode. I get that the whole story is essentially to help Willow be more comfortable and confident with herself, but the outfit Buffy put her in wasn’t even a costume, it was just… sexier clothes. Maybe that was for the sake of the tv show (copyright, maybe?) but I would’ve preferred if Willow had worn the costume of a character that traditionally actually dresses sexier.

    I believe Buffy’s normal hair isn’t a period correct style for the period dress. Hence the wig. Color of the wig probably wasn’t a concern or perhaps there wasn’t much of a selection. Either way it doesn’t mean anything to the grand scheme of things.
    As for the show’s theme for this episode, the hair colors are meant to show Buffy’s dichotomy. Her true slayer self and its baggage and her wanting to be different, albeit useless, because she thinks Angel would be more attracted to a “Cordelia” type.

    I used to really like this episode as a kid but sadly "historical" Buffy in it bugs me too much now. I try to write off how she behaves as her being shaped by what she thinks a lady of the past dressing that way would be like but Xander isn't just acting how he expects a soldier to be. He gets knowledge and ability along with the personality and memory adjustment (also based on what we see some muscle memory I guess). Meanwhile Buffy just gets to be a very sexist and false view of what a women of that time/standing would be? Ignoring it was easier before I became more of a history buff. I think what really ticks me is just a few little tweaks would have made her more historically accurate, the same basic personality only a bit less annoying, and allowed the plot to go pretty much the same way. I wish this didnt stick in my maw the way it does becuase there ismso much that is great and so very enjoyable about this episode.

    • @amandabaker4678
      @amandabaker4678 10 месяцев назад +6

      It always bugs me a bit too. I came up with a head canon that helped me reconcile it a bit - Xander only bought the fake gun at the shop, the rest of his costume he got at an army surplus store - so maybe the fact that he was wearing real fatigues helped give him that information?
      Whereas Buffy's costume was entirely from the shop, and obviously not a real dress from the era, so how she acted was informed by what a 16 year old girl from the 90s who doesn't like history thinks a women of that time would be like.
      Don't know if that will help you or not, but thought I'd share just in case!

    • @Katherine_999

      @amandabaker4678 this is pretty much my head canon also its not perfect but it is what it is

      @TheBuffSummer  10 месяцев назад +3

      @krose6451 What do you mean by "she behaves as her being shaped by what she thinks a lady of the past dressing that way would be like"?
      Willow stayed herself because she became the ghost of herself as she was wearing a ghost costume, there was no personality there, no one to become. Xander and Buffy were wearing costumes that represented something, so they became what their costumes represented. Xander himself said he was there but not there, so they weren't acting like they were expecting those kinds of people to act, they were those people, they weren't themselves. Same for all the kids, of course.
      I'd say they made Buffy an actual damsel in distress to poke fun at a stereotype they're subverting on the show - Maria

      @krose6451 10 месяцев назад +4

      @amandabaker4678 that actually helped me tremendously! Thank you. That headcanon makes sense and will help me deal. I'll still find her annoying like that and not care for the writing choice but it will make it easier to just accept.

    • @TheBuffSummer
      @TheBuffSummer  10 месяцев назад

      @amandabaker4678 That's a solid idea, but I'm having trouble understanding why is it needed? The whole point of the spell that Ethan cast was for the people who bought costumes at his shop to became their costumes, lose their selves, and create chaos.
      Xander and Buffy and all the kids became their costumes. They weren't themselves plus their costumes, they were just what their costumes represented. We didn't have Buffy and Xander act like their costumes, we didn't have Buffy and Xander at all when the spell was cast and until it was broken - Maria

    Yeah I have playing music since I could talk, I played violin, guitar and piano, got carpal tunnel at 15, it's been so hard, especially having to still go through schooling having to talk because we didn't have computers I could use at the time or anything. It's a bit better now, but I still have to use the mouse and type a lot for my job as well, it's surprising how much you actually use your hands for, that having carpal tunnel makes worse. I have had to completely give up playing my instruments now, and have had to focus solely on my singing, so I do feel you having to ease of your guitar playing as well, it sucks

    Buffy's hair changes because the spell turns her into the woman in the drawing from 1775. So the wig is gone and her "real hair" is long and brown.

      It’s not the change that bothered me it’s what they changed it to. It looks like different kind of curling, the one you make with a crimping iron, and specifically narrow crimping, not the beach waves and Hollywood kind, the 80s kind, not just long and brown real hair with no styling - Maria

    I believe you're referring to The Haunted Mask. I only know of it due to seeing the episode as a kid. I was fascinated by the episode. While I'm sure it can be corny to some with today's standards, I still find it decent considering the time (1995) and budget (kids TV show). I remember even believing that Ethan's shop (when I first saw Buffy) was part of the set of the same Goosebumps episode. Since Carly Beth goes to a similar shop that looks a lot like this in the episode. It wasn't just the look of the set, but also the fact that there are two different shows that had episodes with these kind of storylines that were also filmed in the mid-90's. It's common for sets to be reused. However, when I tried to find more information to confirm, I couldn't at the time.
    If curious about the scene, or want to watch the whole episode in general to enjoy, it can be found on RUclips. It could be one, or two videos since technically it originally aired as two parts.

    The part about Buffy’s hair makes me wonder what they filmed first. The costume intro or the part after the transformation and Buffy is the damsel. Perhaps they filmed one part, the producers, gave hair and make up a note the style wasn’t right, so they changed it after the fact and didn’t have time or budget to reshoot.

    Recently discovered you guys on the other channel & have barrelled thru your Buffy reactions. I'm enjoying them (& leaving likes), so thank you. I am a bit confused by why there are so many long breaks, talking for ages about what the characters are wearing?
    Buffy was not & was never known as a fashion drama -- which anybody who saw Cordelia's pants in Ep1 could tell you. (Strangely, that wasn't called out, even though the scene is (in)famous, because Cordelia is telling Buffy how she -- Cordelia of the ill-fitting, mucus green Mom slacks -- has to check out Buffy's "cool factor.") There are some famous looks (Spike's leather coat, for example), but by & large, these are meant to be high schoolers in a nowhere town (Happens to be the HellMouth). Some are supposed to be wealthy, some are poor, some are whatever. Outside of evoking the feeling of the character (Buffy began in more up to date, "LA"-looking clothes. Xander is from a poor family with a depressing story, so the very Southern California style of loud, vintage Hawaiian, or bowling shirts suits his background & character as the class clown. Willow's homespun, handmade, mismatched looks signify her as a nerdy misfit. Giles, the veddy British librarian, might as well have been named Harris Tweed, and Cordelia's clothing makes it clear she thinks -- and wants everyone else to think -- she's Miss Vogue 1997, but there's always something off & cheap that gives it away.) Many episodes show characters wearing the same outfits over & over. It feels like trying to force a conversation that isn't there (& sometimes feels a bit mean for no reason) to endlessly dig at the characters' clothes and appearances, when it's not the point?
    Second, is it sometimes forgotten this is set/filmed in the 1990s? The fashion sensibilities (and cultural sensibilities -- as we watch Sam cringe every time Angel & Buffy look at each other🤣) displayed in an almost 30-year-old fantasy series from the US, may be wildly different to modern tastes, or those of viewers from another country/culture.
    Do Sam and/or Maria work in the fashion industries? Maybe that's why the investment? Sam has mentioned his musical background & talks at length about audio and music in the episodes. Regarding the fashion, of course, everyone has an opinion, but as the critiques of these characters' outfits are moments paused for several times for during an episode &then examined at such length, when it's someone merely wearing a t-shirt or tank top - when Sam & Maria are sitting there wearing t-shirts or tank tops (Hey, this is the 1st time I've seen Sam without his cap!); I wondered if there was some deeper insight to those takes that I was missing?

    One can see a lot of attention, focus went to the Halloween episode. Also this being an American TV production with "American" culture.
    It is high on these tropes and stereotypes in general - it is a form of shorthand writing. All characters and stories have this in them. Also the recycling of actors so to speak - either they did well and the part stays; Spike. Or they will get their moments and even big moments. Jonathan and his mates for instance. In a way I had a soft spot/liked Andrew in that trio setting. Reoccurring roles that get a little bigger, more story line. Characters that seem not that much of importance but are there throught the show storyline.
    So much to like and love about Buffy. As Maria and others prove.
    I really liked this episode, it feels very kids halloween tv program, like you said similar to Goosebumps, and are your afraid of the dark but buffed up (also reminds me of Halloween III in a way). But it is not in my top 5 with all episodes that have been: Normal again is probably my most "favorite", Hush, Once more with feeling, The body, Seeing red - But I also like Beer Bad - it's so bad it is fun and memorable, lol. But there are so many good episodes still to come.
    Willow is my favorite character overal - but in a way we could say she was stripped from her consent in how she wanted to dress in the end/how much skin she wanted to show. But since it was not the end of the world, and she had no other choice for so far we know... she showed a side which will grow and blossom in many different ways. For me it is also a teaser for The Wish S3E9 which in a way also is funny with connections in the series like Xander and Cordelia and Anja (Anja/Anjanka is also loads of fun)
    Xander is one of my least favorite characters, but in the end, without him there was no Buffy or Scooby-gang/Scoobies past Season 1.
    And he was there/went there because some of his unlikable traits in a way.
    It's very C'est la vie, even the things we don't like have importance and a purpose in the bigger picture and overal.
    I like how this also says something about the culture and strives of the zeitgeist of the late 90's, and onward.
    The twist here is very untraditional (but done more than once by now in general) with the demons "not engaging" with/during Halloween.
    (Except they do) For the more "traditional" view we have to go back to more pagan and heathen traditions, since the Catholic/Christian traditions were Christenized versions of these older traditions and festivals. Norse and Northern mythologies: Since the sun was "dying" and it became darker and colder - the veil between the other world and the human world got thin.
    Death (depending on how you died) with that view or hell is not warm and toasty, but freezing and cold, and wet, and dark - death no abundance of "life" so to speak, in contrast with the summer. Humans and human migrations happend long before we have written history, how did they do that; natrual GPS - the stars at night, and the sun at day.
    Samhain and the cycle switch from summer to winter. Keep in mind in the North of Europe in the winter there will be no to harldy no sun to observe (depending on how high up North) or just a very short time, it peeks over the horizon and goes down again. Similar with midsomar the sun won't set.
    The lengths of days and nights.
    Nights/darkness are the most dangerous and scary especially in ancient times, and humans that are not accustomed to it with more dangerous wild life, our human imagination, hearing and seeing things in the darkness. Why we have the tradition of camp fire stories, for entertainments.

    The idea fir the change of wig is that the other one looks more like real hair and pulling it up would highlight the fact it's a wig, or maybe it's tying with the bodice-reaper fantasy look it was referencing. The fashion history nerd i am always wished the outfit was a bit different, either with more historical underwear, a better silhouette or no petticoat underneath (kinda like in Tangled) to give off that confused disheveled look(i find this dress really ugly and the crinoline worn underneath the ugliest farthingale looking thing i've ever seen) maybe even having her hair powdered or pinned up, i wish it did as much like a costume when she transformed
