I love how Oz became a werewolf because his little cousing bit his finger when Oz tickled him.
oz's reaction to realizing he's the werewolf is my favourite thing ever, like just casually calling his aunt like is my cousin a werewolf? hilarious
Xander’s reaction to Larry was super 90s but also he, for that decade, was a better TV role model for how to behave than the majority of that time. He panicked, and a joke was made of the misunderstanding, but he also didn’t humiliate Larry in the moment or gossip and tell the others what happened before Larry could himself. Other 90s tv characters would have let their own insecurities lead the way and made the gag bigger. For the 90s this was delicately handled, although to be clear the bar was not high.
Yeah I dont think what Xander does is bad. He's a bit shocked and he gets lucky with how Larry interprets things but he does the best of a bad situation.
@@DaDungewhat larry did to the female students is far worse than Xander’s reaction, even if he was just worried about being perceived as gay. Im probably one of the few who doesnt think Larry’s closet arc is enough to redeem him for being a xxxual predator.
I had to delete my comment cause I was writing the exact same thing lol, I was in highschool in the early 90s and I lived this and I can say me coming out was not an option at all;) I think they handled the scene the best they could for the time.
@@disneytoysr4fun975 He's a long way from being a sexual predator. He was acting like a complete arsehole sure, but thats not always the same thing.
This episode is twenty years old. Xander is TOTALLY worried about being thought of as gay. He's a straight, teenage boy who wants to be thought of as a stud. Larry has also had to overcompensate his macho-ness. Because at this time, if everyone believed either or both of them to be gay, they'd be beat up on and harassed mercilessly.
I'm not sure if you guys caught near the end when Buffy and Xander are talking (Buffy about Oz and Xander about Larry), some guys knock over a girl's books in the hallway and Larry helps her pick it up before coming over to Xander to thank him. So yeah, just like Sam predicted, that moment in the locker room was a huge turning point for Larry.
Yeah contrary to what they said at the start of the episode Larry is a great reoccurring character.
Love what a nerd Giles is. His big smile when it's a "classic" creature and also probably because for once something is not directly trying to murder his slayer but is kind of a general nuisance and potentially escalating to danger but no humans harmed yet.
I know we all know this but Oz and Willow are such a genuinely wholesome & sweet tv relationship.
Oz's reaction to becoming a werewolf was very chill, this makes so much sense for his character as Sam points out OZ takes time to process thing internally,
in the gym scene oz stated his nephew jordy bit him over the weekend when larry was discussing his bite
that was the clue lol
awww phases is probably my favorite buffy episode, just because it's just a comfort episode for me :) i love it so much
That makes sense 😊 I feel that - Maria
"Can a small person turn into a big werewolf?"
I have a semi-joking fan theory that the werewolf at the beginning that attacks Xander and Cordy is actually Oz's baby cousin, because the fact that Oz finds out that he's a werewolf when he wakes up in the woods on the morning of day three raises the question of what he thought the first time he woke up naked in the woods. If that wasn't actually him on night one, then that explains this away, and the only other confirmed werewolf in the story is Jordy. So...
That's even creepier. Jordy just got his teeth so he's, like, six months old. That's a giant baby.
@@knowledge-girl Oz said that Jordy just got his "grown-up" teeth. Making him about 5 or 6 years old. Still super creepy though.❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Yay! My Sundays are always better with you around. This second half of the season is quite a ride!!
Lovely to hear that! Thank you 🙏 Oh yeah, I'm dreading one of the next episodes 😅 - Maria
I was a teenager in the 90s and the open flannel shirt over T-shirt combo was practically a uniform! There was at least one year (1994 maybe?) when EVERYONE in my school was wearing that, both girls and guys, rich or poor, it didn't matter. It was the only time I remember feeling really comfortable with my clothes choices!
I still do. I like the look.
I don't think I have ever seen anyone guess Oz as the werewolf before the reveal - I'm very impressed!
We're big tv and movie fans, so putting things together is much easier in a lot of cases. And we know and love Seth Green, so that def helps haha - Maria
@@TheBuffSummer That does help!
As a fellow "internal processor" it made me so happy that you guys understood why Oz needed some time. So many reactors get frustrated with him for not telling them all right away!
The giddiness over Willow and Oz and just Oz in general is one of my favorite things about this whole reaction. I love it!
Aww thank you! 💙 lovely times! - Maria
I love Willow. ‘You’re nice and you don’t smoke. OK so you’re a werewolf. That’s cool.’ So smoking would be a dealbreaker but not the turning into a wolf 3 nights a month. Priorities on point.
100%
Yay, I actually got in at the start! Loving your Willow & Oz appreciation!
Yaay! That's cool! We really appreciate them☺ - Maria
Agreed
Oz is always cool about everything, would be great to hear his inner monologue when things happen to know if he's secretly panicking in his head.
I love that the newest episode is already on Patreon!! Thanks!!!
Maria, does Sam know that you adjusting your headband is your “tell”? 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I’m dying laughing as Sam predicts everything and you re-seat your headband three or four times! Lol
I'm gonna say no, cause I don't wear it often and adjust other things all the time haha
I only have two headbands and somehow with this one it feels like it's slipping all the time, when I'm just sitting, not doing anything. And this one isn't even made of a slippery material lol - Maria
Always a great episode. I love Oz and I love how free Larry feels once he acknowledges who he is.
The idea that people act differently on a full moon is pretty established. Hospitals report it a lot, for example.
Thumbnail perfection ❤
Thank you 🙏 - Maria
Jordy was the kid who bit Oz on the finger. Oz mentioned it in gym class. That is his Oz became a werewolf.
The Oz love is powerful.
I remember reading that, at the time, Wheedon was undecided on whether or not he was going to make Xanders character eventually gay and was kind of experimenting with it from time to time. If you watch it in that light it makes a little more sense
Bunnies can be vicious, heard of someone where one of their bunnies' bit off the other bunny's ear.
I love how completely they turn around our opinion of Larry in this episode.
Also, I never thought about why they had boxes of chains. I guess I just figured he found chains and used the boxes to transport them to the kitchen. Although, how he planned to explain that to his family was another matter. 😂😂
It's so weird to think about your daughter (or sister if Theresa has siblings) just being in a funeral home one minute and then you come back from coffee or whatever and the casket is empty and there is no body? What a strange and confusing time it must be for the family
I think it must happen a lot in Sunnydale so the funeral homes would just start obscuring faces of Jane or John Doe cadavers to give to the families instead or tell them they were cremated early by a trainee by mistake etc.
12:00 I think this show invented the three night thing.
Still waiting for Passion.
One of the best episodes ever.
On my top 5. It’s the first episode I think really shines in all the usual ways and introduces the audience to some other really sound, voice and narrative elements. It’s like the cherry on top!❤
I don't really consider this a spoiler, since it never happened, but Xander was originally supposed to come out as gay eventually in the series. There are hints of it throughout all seven seasons (even though Joss changed his mind in the middle of the run). So, it gives Xander's reactions a whole new meaning in the locker scene. Unsure if Larry was intended to be a regular, or not, but he was definitely created to move along this storyline Joss was planning on doing.
34:15 Also Xander's friend from the very first episode rose in a few hours.
It's easy to miss, but Oz mentioned to Larry in the gym that his cousin Jordy was just getting his adult teeth in and had bitten his finger.
I love all the wardrobe in this show.
Willow and Oz are just adorable!
Often people who see less than great special effects from back in the day often assume it's because of the technology available at the time. But sometimes it's just about the budget. In the late '90's the WB was a new network, there were very many homes to whom it was yet to be available. So it had to be about good old fashioned storytelling and the audience's ability to have and use some imagination. If you've ever seen "An American Werewolf in London" you know the practical effect technology was already there. It's just like everything else, it all comes down to $$
That's what makes true "Buffy" fans so cool - they can see past weak effects and appreciate what really matters, the actual story being told
Oz the coolest character in The Buffyverse, not only is he a lead guitarist in an indie band, he just becomes even cooler now he has Superpowers too. Some great foreshadowing from S1 I Robot You Jane when Buffy says to Willow about her virtual computer boyfriend ' he could have a hairy back' well Oz definitely does!
I've watched All The Shows Seasons! I've Read The Books And Graphic Novellas!
I liked Cordys sweater! 😂
Xander acts pretty nervous when he realizes he outed his lie about not remembering what he did to Buffy. Like he was worried Buffy would be angry. I think he's projecting how he would act in the situation were their roles reversed.
No I think he just recalled why he lied about it in the first place, what he did.
@@DaDunge Which he does because Buffy says, "I thought you didn't remember," so he laughs nervously.
I think you accidentlly pushed the save button twice or something because you comment is there twice.
@@Buffy8FanIt told me the first messege had failed to send so I rewrote it.
@@DaDunge When that happens to me it just never sends it. RUclips gets wierder and wierder.
Jordie is that little cousin whose bite Oz was showing earlier
"Mom, dad, why is there a box of chains and manacles in the attic? Are we a family of werewolves?"
"No, son, that's our private stuff, go to your room" xD
Angel is OMG CRAZY! Love your videos every Sunday. Much loveeeeee Maria and Sam. My doggy Angelus shows his fangs to say hi.
Thanks so much Anthony! Say hi to Angelus for us 😁 - Sam
41:00 Xander doesnt grow linearly. Which is fairly realistic.
as I watch these each episode I kind of think " whats gonna happen in this episode" and as we get into it I remember. AS sooon as I heard buffy say 'oz isnt a total animal' I figured what episode this one was.
Hey guys, really appreciate your vids. Keep them coming
Thanks so much 😊 - Sam
Many different aspects go into the 3 day "full" moon, not all people can see the small lacking part to make it fully full. Thus the day before and the day after can be "seen" as full moon(s). This is also in some astrology logics/views (& Astronomy in smaller matters).
Also for lycan lore there are different narrations, this makes the terror more "than just one night". I mean the full moon aspect is a horror aspect and not found in all lycan myths or stories.
This show deals with certain topics that can have many different labels. But not so much the label; mainstream. Occult, mysticism, mythical, monsters horror/thriller/scary stories, religious, spiritual, supernatural/paranatural, etc.
The werewolf niché is a whole category on its own if you go deeper and outside the Buffy verse.
Sir John Talbot:
*Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.*
This is used in many lycan films, but the autumn is not always included - wolfbane blooms in autum so we still have that. So should we only worry about werewolves in autum?
The Wolfman [1941]
The Wolf moon is the first full moon of the year, so the first full moon in Januari. That is just how it is named/called. Like blue moons, and other types of moons.
In theory every year has 12 full moons, once every 28 days/month. why a month is called a month, like monday moon is interwoven into the word.
With in theory (not practice) 12 full moons in a year, there are 13 new moons.
The moon holds symbolisms, the wolf holds symbolisms, and the hybrid human-wolf holds symbolisms.
How far down the rabit hole do you want to go?
It's cool how Angelus makeup. Is totally different to Angel's. He has pale lips and probably other things.
I love that you stopped and talked about how Willow said he was hot and cold. I often have been very confused by that statement because I never saw that he was hot and cold only that he needed to process or think or something else but I also often need time to think and process. I believe my face sometimes becomes a little blank because I am processing and people sometimes misinterpret that, but for me it’s better if they misinterpret that then laugh at me because something weird came out of my mouth.
I love your reactions. Thank you for sharing this
Thanks so much 😊 - Sam
Willow and Oz are the cutest!
39:00 Yeah a slayer could probably go toe to toe with someone like spiderman or the hulk (as he is in the MCU) She'd completly wipe the floor with captain america.
when they were in the gym oz said his baby cousin bit him
Oz is my gaborite. Every episode I watch where he's in, I hold my breath hoping nothing will happen to him. 🥲
Didn't make it on time for the premier this time around unfortunately, but love this episode and love the reaction
Thanks Kilian 😊 - Sam
This makes me want to watch Big Wolf on campus again.
Before the commercial: werewolf alert.
Haven't even finished your commentary yet but had to stop and laugh about you guys pointing out the boys' matching flannel. I went to school in the 90's; most of the guys wore an open flannel over a t-shirt every day. Not uncommon to find half the boys in class dressed that way and many of the girls...I miss few things the way I miss my 90's flannel.
love the reaction. disagree about cordelia's sweater 110%
Thank you! Fair enough 😂 - Maria
None of them know that Amy's mom is in the statue, and feeling like the eyes are following you is pretty common when looking at artwork that includes a face, so there's no reason Willow would say (or avoid saying) anything about it.
Yeah, I think it just blew past her & she already had something she wanted to talk to him about so she was preoccupied anyway. However, if she had stopped to think about it -- trophies don't have the eyes painted in. The eyes should've been solid "gold". Nothing there to create the illusion of "following". ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Two very 1990s off-screen things. From this point, Larry became known to the fans as Big Gay Larry. Actor Larry Bagby, a straight Mormon, was aware and didn't care. Very cool guy. Some may know him as Ice Man from Hocus Pocus or Marshall Grant, Juhnny Cash's bassist in Walk the Line.
Number two was that everyone in the production hated Oz' costume. It became known as Big Gay Possum. There was a section of the gag reel dedicated to it that us hysterical...at least to 1990s audiences.
Just in case anyone thought hunting werewolves might be OK, make the hunter deeply unlikable.
Is he horrible at picking people? Giles is a librarian.
I wonder if Tommy Hilfinger paid for that as showing brand names is usually a legal issue.
The werewolf size is arguably based on the stunt guy. They found a stunt guy who was particularly good at running on all fours.
Jordy (sp) was Oz' baby nephew. When Larry says he got bit by a big dog, Oz says he was bit by Jordy.
Certain fans call her the USS Buffyprise as her powers occasionally shift based on the plot. There was a sizabke Trekkie fandom crossover.
I like the concept of Cordy's sweater, I'm not thrilled at the execution. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Okay, so we often disagree about fashions featured in BTVS, but at 17:24 I couldn’t agree more. That ribbed sweater is heinous!
So...blast from the (slightly more recent) past: does anyone remember Liam Kyle Sullivan? The actress who plays Teresa was a vampire in his video Text Message Break Up.
She actually had a series on youtube as Heather the vampire and in one episode we learn that she has nightmares of Buffy coming to kill her!😂It's effing hilarious!! It's probably still somewhere on youtube!
eddit: found it: ruclips.net/video/1capGOyoszs/видео.html
@@shawatches I knew she had a show but did not see the Buffy episode. Thanks!!
@@samiridgethevoice love to share!!
hi there, I think Oz becoming a werewolf isn't because it "runs in the family" but because of his cousin being a werewolf and biting his finger... which of course would ultimately mean it runs in the family. At least thats how I allways thought.
Love your videos btw, stumbled upon your channel shortly after I began rewatching Buffy myself
Yeah, its said as joke, but Oz cousing bit his finger. Thats why he asks if his cousin is a werewolf and how long it has been happening
I feel like Buffy hit the nail on the head when she confronted Xander in “I Robot, You Jane.” He likes being the belle of the ball, he doesn’t like it when Willow or Buffy has attention, especially from other guys. I also thought the moon pies things was funny purely because… no one ever laughs at Xander’s jokes. Xander tells jokes more for his own benefit or to alleviate situations where he feels awkward, so I’m not sure why Giles thought that one was funny.
Jokes I wouldn't normally laugh at will seem very funny to me when there's just the right combination of my mood & the timing of the joke. Being hyped up on sugar/caffeine helps.
Not sure about Giles or his relationship with Moon Pies. Or if being British has anything to do with it. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
💖
Willows is really the heart of the show, her relationships are always the most honest and equal and loving. I just finished reading ‘In Every Generation’ by Kendra Blake It’s so so good!
Keep in mind too, Zander has to worry about the guy developing a crush and Zander has to either come clean or hurt the guy.
Larry does receive a bit of redemption in the next few seasons. I actually like the character once he's settled in himself. He pops up here and there.
This is a spoiler. Why are u such a noob
@nini6044 Sorry, didn't realize talking about a minor character in the vaguest terms possible was a spoiler. Should I also point out that Larry obviously has a personality shift by the end of the episode where he's more kind and less macho?
@@ashleighlalonde6394 it is when reactors took a liking to the character and wondered if they will show him again. It's not a spoiler when you're talking about the same episode you're watching the reaction on and a different thing when it's down the line
It's always best when they find out on their own. You could have just said we will see him again . Which is not a spoiler
Yeah, unfortunately, I think y'all took the generous interpretation of the gay subplot. I think it's very much meant to be OMG WHAT WILL XANDER DO, HE KNOWS A GAY PERSON and his rampant homophobia being around the guy later doesn't help much. Many deductions from the Xander is a cool person points (not that he had a lot by this point anyway) for me.
There was a lot of homophobia back in high schools in the late 90s. Xander’s reaction is unfortunately fairly realistic, even as Xander’s lvl of cruelty is fairly decent for the time.
Also, EVERYONE wore plaid constantly back then. We literally called them plaids. I’m a woman and me and my girlfriends even wore them. You’d be hard pressed to find a room where people weren’t wearing plaid.
Xander’s reaction is pretty tame even by todays standards. Most guys are cool with it but they dont want to be like a shoulder to cry on or anything lol. Besides the real disgusting part of this episode is how normalized xxxual assault was to the point where we are supposed to accept and redeem a pervert just because he was secretly gay.
This probably isn't a great episode but it's solid and it's great that Oz gets his first episode centered around him. Also this is where the fanbase really starts to love Larry...
"There's a lot of great movies in the 90's..."
Meh. There are certainly a few, particularly "L.A. Confidential" but films in this period can't hold a candle to the 70's.
i like that scene gay considering the writers wanted to make a gay character and up until te beginning of the shooting they believed Xander should have been a gay character (it later got changed because it didn't fit with how the characters interacted with each other)
