I really loved how Buffy gave Lily that little boost to start on a better path. A job, a safe place to stay and 3 weeks of breathing room before she has to pay rent can be life changing. I know someone who work with kids and young people that have little to no family support and having someone care enough to help is incredible.

Whyever not? Remember "this is insane; you need help"? Remember "if you walk out that door, don't even think about coming back?" Did you think that wouldn't have any effect? Do you not know how "kicking your own daughter out of the house" works? Now you didn't know the trauma she experience, that much is true but you made her believe she had no place to come back to. And that's totally on you.

TBF to Joyce in that situation, she had a ton of information dropped on her out of nowhere with no time to prepare. Nothing was particularly explained to her, and her FIRST priority was to keep Buffy safe and to try to fix the heavy situation that surrounded her at the time, which included being accused of possible murder. That was a very overwhelming moment for a single parent that already had to drastically alter her life because of a previous unexplained incident. So while her ultimatum was intense and inappropriate, it does make sense that she would go to an extreme to try to keep Buffy from going into danger, given the info she had to work with at the time.
Giles actually does share some of the blame for how some of that played out by never considering informing Joyce of the situation Buffy was in as a slayer, and it says something about The Watchers Council that they intentionally try to isolate young girls from their parents/support systems, but that's a topic for another time.

    • @coldservings

@cajah88 There are reasons why Joyce wasn't told, but that would require spoilers from Season 6. Those reasons do _not_ paint Joyce in any better light.

This episode always stuck in my mind, I think because of the stranger danger message and the idea you can lose your youth in a moment of weakness. Seriously, don’t trust a stranger on the dark street that is trying to relate to you. He might be wearing a button up, but that doesn’t make the person wholesome.

The original Civilization games would have been out by then (released 1991), but the urban legend about Gandhi only started in 2012 on TVTropes. So this is probably just a coincidence (but maybe the original post on TVTropes was inspired by this)

    • @spamfilter32

@boghag no, it was a phenomenon that people who played the game recognized very early. I was playing the Civ games in the late nineties, and my god did Gandhi love his nukes. Chanterelle/Lily/Anne is a really underrated arc, I think, im the Buffyverse. Especially rewatching now as an adult who's lived (and to an extent still living) paycheck to paycheck and had to jump between sleeping on friend's couches in my late teens - early 20s. It's just a great example of the good Buffy does, sometimes without even fully realizing. She saved this girl twice, then got her to help save others in a moment of crisis, and most importantly act to save herself.

    I like this episode.
Chantarelle, Lily, and now Anne!!! Buffy continues to change her life for the better.
I feel like Joyce projects her guilt of onto blaming Giles so she doesn't have to deal with all the truth Buffy said of "you still haven't figured it out," aka her not knowing her daughter, and kicking her out. I get why Joyce is upset, but I feel it is all misplaced issues/guilt. Also, in the origin comic, the movie, and the movie's original script Joyce ignored her daughter and only started parenting because when Buffy got in trouble for saving kids at her former school's dance and accused of the damage because she couldn't explain why she caused said damage. From the start of S1, Joyce has shown moments that prove she is skilled only at taking care of a newborn despite Buffy being sixteen. Thus her misplaced issues on Giles. She may love her daughter, but she has a ways to go before she catches up to where she should be on parenting.
Best lines and moment: "Breaking into your office and going through your private files." "What's with all the sin?" "I'm Buffy, the vampire slayer. And you are?" "In case we die." And the moment Lily interrupts Ken's villain monologue by pushing him from the walkway. I never really thought the Ghandi joke was funny. Just odd. Different brand of humor, I guess.

Loved that you guys caught that Lily and her ever changing name…. let her significant other get a very permanent tattoo of her impermanent name. This episode also makes me kind of sad because it just shows that Buffy can’t escape being the Slayer. She just wants a break. In season 1 we saw that, and we see it again here. Short description, all the AI had aggression levels (0 - 255), Gandhi was India's leader and aggression was set to zero. When the technology Democracy was unlocked and implemented all AI had their aggression level lowered by a set value. Gandhi's value being zero, the computer would move it to 255, max aggression, and late game India would be going HAM on everyone.

I absolutely think that Joyce is right. The Watchers showed up in Buffy's life and instructed her to keep an enormous secret about her life and identity from her parents. "For their own safety" - what? That doesn't make a lick of sense. If anything, it puts them in more danger because they can be both ignorant and used against Buffy at the same time but because they don't know anything, they don't even know to wear a cross.
My theory is that Buffy was discouraged from informing her parents because there was a real chance they wouldn't have allowed her to just go out at night and slay, at barely fifteen. At the very least, her parents would have been able to monitor and have a say in how much danger she was putting herself in. Kendra's parents gave her up to the cause because it was a part of their culture but Joyce and Hank are modern, well-educated people who don't get another daughter when this ones dies, unlike the Watchers who don't care about the lives of these girls because they just keep popping up.
And these lies ensured that not only Buffy didn't have any adults in her life protecting her and prioritizing her, it also ruined her relationship with her parents, which is why it came to the point of Joyce saying the (admittedly bad) things she said in the finale of the last season.
Giles, as the Council's proxy, is absolutely at fault that Buffy felt she had to distance herself from her own mother, and not just go stay with her father if she needed to avoid her life for a while.

Yep, I kinda hate how people view joyce in that scene. thank you SO MUCH!! Joyce hit it on the nose when she called Giles out! In fact she was too kind because he actively told Buffy to lie to her and keep her out of the loop. I don't care if he didn't make her the slayer, he DID guilt her into risking her life and fighting demons. She very well could have ignored her calling and lived a normal life if he didn't push her back into the slayer lifestyle.

In any other context, the Watcher's relationship with the Slayer resembles the classic groomer technique. And, based on what little we know about other Slayers and/or potential Slayers, some Watchers may well have crossed the line into actual grooming, and the next line as well. Giles's character has to be so straight-laced so that it's never something that we, the audience, consider a possibility, which helps diffuse the ick-factor. (And I do mean diffuse, not defuse.)

Carlos Jacott, the Fed from the Firefly pilot. Joss loved working with him, so used him a lot. Joss claims (not sure if he was serious) that his fight scenes were difficult as he would keep apologizing. Carlos also became a writer on Psych! I loved Psych!
I had issues with this episode. I felt the despair/I am no one was a bit beating me over the head. I never thought the Ghandi joke was funny.
The guy in the doorway in the red shurt and vest that Buffy confesses her sin to (sort of), is stunt coordinator Jeff Pruit. We used to be friends until he left the show and made a mess. That's a story for another day.
I don't know if there is an actual hell in the Jossverse. There are various hell dimensions. This is one of them.
Right after the msin guy grabs Lily with the knife and Buffy is fighting four guys, three are down a d she tosses the fourth off the platfirm, he clearly lands on a pad. The entire pad is visible and it moves as a stunt pad does when he lands on it. The corners puff up from the impact. I don't think I have noticed that before.
Julia Lee hasn't been in very much a d nothing on Wikipedia since 2016. I thought she was good. A random fact I learned, in 2007 the character of Constance in both Disney Haunted Mansions used her as the face/body midel, but a different actress voices the character.
I don't know which I like more S2 or 3. They are the two best. I won't rank the rest at this time. I do tend to rank S1 much higher than.a lot of other fans though.

Season 3, though I love certain characters, episodes & moments, is the weakest of the Buffy series for me. Which, a “weak” Buffy season is still honestly phenomenal & better than many other shows in general, this one was just never my favorite.
