You notice People of Color carried themselves differently back then. because they were first generation home owners and The family structure for the most part was still in tact. They had a different sense of pride. They carried themselves differently. I hope people take heed to that.
Right.
I enjoyed the part where he said absolutely no graffiti on the wall in our neighborhood. Keeping those property values up.
Real talk.
Back then, regardless of our adversity in this country, most of us still maintained some level of dignity, despite. Once our family values broke down, our communities broke down.

What Kevmac and his crew is doing is documenting our street history, from the proper perspective. Which is our perspective!
Far too long we have allowed others to tell our story and profit. Many times these other folks will slant or edit words or video to fit their narrative.
In general we have a bad habit of not documenting things, we tend tell stories but not always keeping record. This is keeping record.
KMV is one brick in our building of documentation.

The slap that changed the course of history
Honestly I think things would turned about the same. If Raymond Washington had stayed an Avenue he probably would have pushed them in the same direction as Crips - expansion into other neighborhoods, annexing other gangs etc. Starting a supergang was obviously his big goal in life. Also, somebody was going to fill that vacuum of open territory in 69/70. Maybe the Brims would have been the big gang everybody else was against. maybe BPS.

And crazy thing is people was trying to make Jimmy Lavender seem like he was crazy and almost make it seem like it was taboo to think that Craig slapped Raymond. History is history and if you're into history (in general) like I am, you know it gets annoying when you're trying to understand the picture in its totality of what happened and there's some ppl with biases, so they leave certain information out.

Over the.years Kev mac has put on a masterclass on civic anthropology. The work that he has put in is at least thesis level. These interviews should actually be logged in the Smithsonian museum or even taught in university courses. The govt should have given this man a grant for dissecting the origins of the African American gangs in the western United states. Before now all we had was Gangland on the history channel. Big Monson has a great memory... but does anyone else get the feeling that he's downplaying how violent the Avenues really were? They might not have been a gang in the sense that the Crips or Bloods were, but they were definitely wild -- robbing jackets, robbing chicken coops, knocking out teachers, fighting the Eses' with bumper jacks....etc...
There might not have been shootings and killings, but there was violence. Monson looks like he could still knockout roughly 95% of humanity today with those hands... Imagine him at 21/22 years old...

Think Craig was referring to Zero Period. Some schools still let you go in before school starts to make up or gain extra credit. Lots of teachers do not teach that early and not many students willing to do such. My senior year I was able to get into a zero period for an AP test, because, our AP teacher fell ill and we had a substitute most second semester and we were not properly prepared. Another teacher volunteered, but, we did not get credit, as, it started after the semester started. I graduated High School 2004
I just slept in my Spanish class and Mrs. Rodriguez passed me with a C1A for good behavior.
My algebra teacher failed me said you have good behavior, so I am going to give you a choice. You can come to summer school to try to pass or I can give you a passing grade and avoid summer school.

This comment is straight facts. I want to add something else to your comment. When I was in elementary school the dark skin girls gave the light skin girls hell. In middle school the dark skin girls reign supreme still giving the light skin girls hell beating them up left and right but when we entered HighSchool the tides changed because the light skin black girls fought so much through elementary and middle school until when we reached HighSchool they were seasoned fighters and they started giving the dark skin girls hell. I witnessed it up close. I wonder did that social dynamic happen at any other schools. The dark skin vs dark skin has always been a negative eyesore in black communities and still is today but the dynamics I’m speaking on is the fighting part.
