Absolutely fell in love with the R8 after that Top Gear track test too! The 4.2L Audi V8 in the back is an absolute peach of an engine and pair it with that gated manual it’s a match made in heaven!!
I have purchased several “dream cars” as I get older I realize that the most fun I have had was with the cars I had getting to the point of being able to buy my dream cars.
I can literally see Mike's and Jimmy's excitement in almost every part of the video, like a 10 year old!! Which is of course, standard Petrolhead protocol 😂🤣😂😂🤣
The engine is blown, bearings failed, the transmission gear teeth and clutch assembly is toast, electrical gremlins of the highest order, boom, 1.5k moneys

@@clumsygarage1578But, with some fat trimmed out, and some cheap suspension and tire upgrades, it will be a great car. It's a Golf underneath, afterall.

@@lorenzrudolf Looks like the TT I rammed when the Richard Head driving it tried queue jumping on the way into Cambridge one very wet morning. He left with an Iveco 7.5 tonner shaped dent in the back!
225 TT with no spoiler? I wonder if it’s a pre-recall setup? I used to have a TT 225 (from new in 2001). Earlier models had been recalled and a rear spoiler, suspension changes, and ESP were retrofitted following a couple of fatal high speed autobahn “offs” attributed to lift off oversteer. Mine was a pretty safe and dull handling car. I drove a TT that the owner wouldn’t allow the retrofit on, and it was a much more lively setup. I much preferred it to mine.
I'm lucky enough that I was able to snag my dream car for a steal, now I just need to get the money together to repair and restore it - and if the stars align, maybe an engine swap
I got a TTS MK2 new almost 14 years ago; have put 166k miles on it and still drives like she did out of the showroom. The only thing that's going to make me upgrade is when they no longer sell petrol.
I love the first gen TT for a similar reason. One of my all-time favourite TG episodes was the convertibles in Iceland shootout (in which Richard drove a 350Z convertible, James a Crossfire convertible and Jeremy a TT 3.2 roadster) and that episode made me madly infatuated with the TT 3.2 quattro roadster. In my imaginary $100 million dream garage, I'd definitely have one of those cars. And if you had that TT in this episode, I'd even rank them as TT 3.2>R8 V8>R8 V10.
I fell in love with the Abarth 500 when it was first featured in Top Gear back in 2008, now I own an italian unit from the same year, dreams do not need to be THAT expensive, there are nice fun daily drivers that almost anyone could probably afford at some point.
That v8 R8 is also my dream car and as I don't think I can't afford one, specially as a daily for maintenance costs. I'm thinking about the mk1 TT 1.8T, so I feel this video suits me well
Was deciding between this and a video on an unrelated topic earlier. Went with the other one. Later, I saw that Jimmy mentioned on instagram that he was on this so had to come back to it.
I worked for Audi through the period of the original TT being launched, as well as the R8. Honestly, the TT was such a special thing back then. Sure, the R8 is a special thing too and in a different league in most respects, but I don’t recall it having the same level of hype at launch as the original TT received. I suspect the Mk1 TT did more for Audi as a brand and paved the way for future car design in general way more than the R8 did. The TT interior was years ahead of its time and it’s unmistakably a TT. Sit in something else from the late 90s and compare. The R8 interior is just like any other interior of the time. The TT Mk1 will surely soon get the recognition it deserves.
I have news for you, out here in Oz, you are not going to get a going TT for $2K, the cheapest ones for sale (1999-2002) start at around $6K and go up to around $15K. Later versions are even more expensive. And forget an A8 as they are way out of pretty much most people’s budgets.
This video got my head all messed up. I saw Mike, ok... DriveTribe. then I saw Jimmy. I was like: nice colab... but when it cut to the cars on track I was expecting those wonderful shots in slow motion of the cars sliding all over the place and that voice of Cris Harris. Loved the video
1:04 My dad said literally the exact same thing about his. I thought it was cool, he misses having a manual car, but doesn’t really have any lasting love for TTs
I love the Audi design, from tthe early 90's into the 00s. Cause you got the A2 family aluminium saloon as well. I know what they say about the filling of fluids and electrics.
Exactly! Everyone calling the Mazda MX5 a sports-car and the R8 is in the same bracket? Absolutely wild.. but people told me, my M2C wasn't a sports-car. So in that world, the R8 would only be a sports-car, I guess 😅
Okay, so i know that MOT on older cars is more expensive and more intrusive than American licensing requirements, but your used car grass sure looks green from this side of the pond. A TT in this nick is a $6000 car in the US. The only $1500 TT i found was a "mechanic's special" with 400k miles. Then there were two salvsge title cars at $2k. The cheapest "driveable" example was $4000, and it looked like every one of its 182k miles was a difficult one.😔
My dream car is the one I have owned since new - 2013 Subaru Forester turbo diesel 6 speed manual - you can't fit a couple of kayaks on the roof of one of the Audis 😋
I think 1500 for a bog standard OG TT is a bit lost in the past when even things like a TTRS or an RS3 from the 2010s can be had for 10k. Would love for that level of car to be included for something like a E63 vs old E550 vs 1500 class car. Doubly so if you take the 550 to get tuned.
The main issue isn't which car is best, but what has happened to Aero bars? What's happened to the proper block shaped bar? That pale lumpy thing looks terrible.
True. The only reason I'd choose the R8 over the TT is if it either has the titanium exhaust on that V8 or the 5L even-fire V10 from the early Gallardo with the manual.
That's a very early tt without the spoiler or the suspension tweaks. I'm surprised it was so cheap since people charge a premium for early non altered ones
Should have at least got the MK2 TTs. Yes it's probably 5x the cost of the MK1 they got and would have ruined the "100th the cost" narrative but it would have been a slightly fairer comparison.
First 😇
Ty for having me along! That TT was a weapon!

There are four for less than that currently on autotrader
Since it's a mark 1 TT that's missing the rear spoiler they added after the recall... probably a few

Old top gear vibes. Keep it up guys
The non spoiler versions are super rare, all TT’s were recalled and fitted with a rear spoiler so they would actually go around corners at speed 😂
actually a rare TT without the spoiler fittet
and the TT interior, after ,25 years, is most of time still perfect. All real aluminium and great quality.

there is a reason they are rare LOL
You could have gotten an early, higher mileage TTRS for about 12k in the UK, that would be a very fair comparison to the R8
Jimmer and Mike make a great team together. Enjoyed this one
To be fair, the TT's 1.8t engine is significantly more reliable than the R8's.
and can be tuned comfortably to 400bhp without upgrading gearbox, drive train etc
cheaper to maintain probably but im sure they are both equally reliable
What experience do you have of R8 engine reliability? Because it's bomb proof.
I'm lucky enough that I was able to snag my dream car for a steal, now I just need to get the money together to repair and restore it - and if the stars align, maybe an engine swap
the TT's 1.8t engine is super reliable , I have one for 2 years, with 140km, runs clear, just you need to find the right car
I too fell in love with the V8 during that episode. I remember watching it so clearly.
