@Keshav Ah yes he debated all the thousands of monks and defeated them making then "convert" because that's a thing hindus do 🤦. The other guy is completely right, buddhism was at that point a philosophy and much of it has integrated within modern hinduism since the bhakti movement. And Keshav, you really aren't an educated hindu if you think we have a conversion situation going on.

Altai Republic is in Southern Siberia, geographically Central Asia, but culturally European, since it is a part of Russia. Funny enough, Altai Republic does not even host a Buddhist minority, it is around 62% Orthodox Christian, 5% Other Christians, and rest of the population is Atheist. Kalmykia is the only "Buddhist" region in Russia and Europe, where Buddhists consist of 47% of the population, not even the majority, but yes very impressive for Europe.
This happened because of Mongols emigrating to the specific place around 1600s. However they had more land and more people were Buddhist in the area, they later converted to Christianity or became Atheist. The Buddhists left in the area live in Kalmykia.

    One small inaccuracy.
The Buddhist minority (~6%) in present day state of Maharashtra, on the Western coast of India, is not a remnant of ancient Buddhism, but a result of the Dalit Neo-Buddhist movement that started by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar in 1956, when he officially converted to Buddhism along with many of his followers. This event was quite monumental in the history of India, since it reintroduced Buddhism to mainland/lowland India after at least half a millennium.

Buddhism arose as a protest to the ritualistic Hinduism, where the priests held control over people. While the people were fed up of the priestly control, came Buddha, a fresh breeze, which swept away the previous frustration! 'Desire is the cause of all sufferings' is not Buddha's original. That idea has been in India long before Buddha. The original philosophic contribution of Buddha is that he concluded that objects animate and inanimate keep changing every second!
It is not correct to call Buddhism a faith. There is no belief system in Buddhism or Jainism or for that matter in Hinduism, just as they have in Christianity or Islam. The idea is to emulate Buddha, and seek the ultimate truth as he did. In that sense Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism are seeking religions which adhere to Dharma! So Hindus, Buddhists and Jains are called seekers, not believers and these religions are called Dharmic religions!
In fact the decline of Buddhism started because, there was not another Buddha to lead the people and Buddhists ended up doing what Buddha forbade them to do- worshiping another God, Buddha! They started preserving the bones and teeth of Buddha and held them in reverence. In fact Dharmic religions do not give importance to the body, which came from the earth and will return to the earth! It is the soul which takes another body in another life and is given importance. Today many rituals are conducted around this body parts and it is ironic that Buddhism arose as a revolt against ritualistic practices!
It would not be wrong to say that Buddhism is Hinduism minus the rituals and the plethora of Gods! Buddhist practices such as yoga, meditation, martial arts etc were in existence before Buddha.
This comment is not with the idea of hurting anyone, only to keep the record straight. Thank you.

However, buddhists during those times ended up doing just the same, and many hindus even to this day consider buddha to be another avatar of the main trinity. I think, if buddha or buddhists would have formed some sort of lineage of gurus like the sikhs, or the shias or Baha'is, etc. They would have been able to preserve the original concept on which buddhism was founded. Today, all buddhists do, or at least aim to do is imitate buddha, instead of applying his "principles & teachings" of "morality & mortality" to the real world.

Buddism was a woke urban religion, and it disappeared in India because of Brahmin led Hindu backlash. Buddism had to move under heavy persecution to Gandhara in Pakistan, and Gandharans spread Buddism to Central Asia and East Asia. Afghanistan was part of Gandhara, but it was mostly in Pakistan and was a South Asia society. Iranic Afghan people came to the region later
Eventually, Hindu oppression against Buddhists spread to Pakistan, and Buddism was increasingly suppressed. Buddhists collaborated with Muslims to drive out the Hindu rulers, and readily converted to Islam. That is why regions in India that had Buddist population are mostly Muslim today
