  • @wordsshackles441
    @wordsshackles441 5 лет назад +9

CG Artist here. Dynamic cube-maps are actually 'genuine reflections'. Very much like shadow maps, they are computed in real-time and derive their mapping coordinates from the 3D scene. Therefore, dynamic cube-maps are not 'fake reflections', they are fairly accurate reflections of the 3D scene, that is why it is possible to see accurate animations playing in the reflection. Gran turismo for instance uses dynamic cube maps, this is the reason why the cars reflect the scene, weather and passage of time as well as scene animations, as you would expect. The fact that 'reflection' is being translated into a map does not mean that the reflection is a static offline approximation of the current scene (Just like dynamic shadow-maps). That said, dynamic cube-maps are indeed very expensive to compute (again, just like shadow maps), nor are capable of the same degree of accuracy and nuance that a ray-traced reflection can. Also, genuine transmittance will become possible where in the past it simply was not.

    It's a game genre.
Quantum Break and Max Payne are both games that while not true Adventure games are still action-adventure hybrids.
In adventure games the story *is* the game.
That's *meant* to be the main focus of the story, and a game developer has to take care to not detract from the story with game mechanics (or game play as you say).
You guys not being into adventure games is fine.
But that's a matter of preference with regards to game genres.
And some of us still prefer adventure games and miss the pure adventure games of the nineties and earlier.
It's one area where modern games fall short by being too concerned with entertaining us all the time to actually deliver the emotions and story of true art.
That said, there *are* ways to let game mechanics enhance a story too.

The brand new metal pipes looked okay though. But as soon as the environment is supposed to look a bit old and gritty, there seems little use for RTX reflections. Or when it's outside in nature. Half transparent windows still look too polished it seems. Remember when they overused HDR ~ten years ago? We can do it, so we do it.

Not gimped if its just not properly implemented to begin with. You cant gimp something you arent trying to perfect.
This is only going to increase as times go on. Why do shitty fake SSR when you can save substanstial time by just doing it via RT?
That is a big selling point for devs, streamlined workflow.

    • @Hayreddin

Specularity maps don't reflect objects in the scene especially when those objects can all be moved around in any direction.
OP is right look at Killzone Shadow Fall or even Killzone 3 on PS3 SSR was in those games and as per usual SSR will allow all objects visible in screen space to reflect off of compliant surfaces.
Remedy's SSR is effectively broken. Other good examples of not broken SSR Uncharted 4, The Order: 1886, Marvel's Spider-Man and DriveClub to name a few.

    I wouldn't call it "realistic".
It looks like everything is wet and it doesn't seem to take account of facing ratio (looking straight to a glass shouldn't trigger as much reflection as looking at it at a 90 degrees angle).
It's like when games started to implement bloom and other camera effects and were overdoing it all the time.
It's still exciting for what's to come, but it doesn't look that good to me in most instances.

People do it all the time, ambient occlusion was overused when it came out and still is, subsurface scattering was overused at the beginning also.
Being raytracing so easy to use in terms of light behavior I expect a lot of weird shaders and overused stuff once realtime use of raytracing is more mature.
Offline render/lighting artists will have a knowledge advantage, maybe new job opportunities?

I played Metro Exodus with global illumination at 4K@30 no problem. I'm just not so sure I wanna play at 1080p for these effects though. I love my higher resolutions. Also, because it's a new thing in gaming, they are going to overuse it to the point of making the game look less realistic, thus defeating the purpose of RTX looking realistic. This is gonna be the new trend for a while - have as many plastic, glass and polished metal surfaces as possible, and put puddles everywhere, even indoors. There's probably gonna be a period of a couple of years where certain publishers will market their games based on their shininess and amount of reflective surfaces, not the story or gameplay, which is just absurd.
