  • Philip H. Anselmo & the Illegals will deliver "A Vulgar Display of Pantera" worldwide on Friday, April 9th. The livestream concert will see the metal icon and his bandmates performing songs from across the Texas juggernaut's five classic major-label albums: 'Cowboys From Hell,' 'Vulgar Display of Power,' 'Far Beyond Driven,' 'The Great Southern Trendkill' and 'Reinventing the Steel.' We talked to Anselmo ahead of the event and discussed the songs that Pantera never got to play live during their groundbreaking run. Watch above and pick up your tickets here: bit.ly/3cQpmNz

"I'll cast a shadow" played live June 29 2001 Grand Rapids, MI. Extreme Steel Tour. I even remember when the birthday cake was brought out for Phil that night. Pantera was the second band that I saw live in concert. They came to my tiny Canadian town in 1992, opening for Killer Dwarfs and Skid Row. I quit a new part time job just to go to the show. The arena was near empty when Pantera came out; there might have been a couple hundred people near the stage. Naturally, they opened with Cowboys from Hell and it sounded just like on the album, minus the rhythm guitar track. Although the crowd was small, the energy was right and the band was shredding. When Pantera left the stage, my friends and I left the venue. We hung out where the tour busses were parked and got to meet and talk briefly with the band members, except Phil. They seemed like a great bunch of dudes. It's still my favourite live show that I've seen. Long live Pantera! RIP, Diamond and Vinnie!

I would have loved to see Pantera play 10’s and The Underground in America. I love those songs. For the record, Pantera played Floods twice that I now of. The first is when I saw them February 2, 2001. 3 weeks before my 20th birthday in San Jose, CA. Which was such an awe inspiring experience for me because I was/still am a guitarist influenced by Dime. I was about 30 feet from the stage as Pantera played Floods and all I could do was stare at Dime playing every note. I felt like Dime took me to school that night. The second, that I watched, was a show in Seoul, South Korea that was released on a DVD bootleg from the Reinventing The Steel tour. Pantera had tons of songs they either never played live or only played 5 or 10 times live. That was the crazy thing about seeing Pantera live. You never got enough deep cuts.

Was waiting to hear about "Where You Come From". Probably my favorite Pantera song. I know I'm likely in the minority here. To me, that song is so full of that swagger for which they were well known, that despite having heard many of their other hits growing up-- I became instantly enamored with them when I heard it for the first time on Dee Synder's Strangeland Soundtrack. They were a force to be reckoned with in their heyday. Thanks for the music, y'all.
