Layne Staley walking onstage at the intro of Nutshell to open the Alice In Chains Unplugged show just cemented them at the top somehow, it was one of the most honest and gut wrenching vocal performances ever, it was peak grunge, it was perfect. But for my money, Jeremy is my favorite grunge song.

I think Nirvana is by far the most iconic, but my personal favorite would have to be Soundgarden. I personally believe Chris Cornell is by far the best vocalist to have ever come out of the Seattle grunge scene, I love Kim Thayil's weird yet somehow fitting guitar work, and I think no other rock band besides Rush has been better at making use of odd time signatures.

So am I crazy or isn’t STP grunge? Nobody mentioned them and I don’t even see comments about them. I fucking love AIC, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, but you can’t deny STP has a ton of great songs as well and Scott’s voice was just as memorable as the others… in my opinion. I couldn’t chose a favorite though I love that era of rock, they all fucking rule! RIP to the greats we’ve lost too soon. The world still misses you! 🤘🏼🖤

STP didn’t come up thru the Seattle music scene and they were about a year behind the main 4 so they are kind of an outlier to the ‘grunge’ scene, even though they have a similar sound. Doesn’t mean they are bad. Smashing Pumpkins is also a great band from the same time period that usually isn’t considered to be grunge. I’m sure there are lots of others.

Grunge was odd in that every band in the scene was a mix of at least 2 genres. Nirvana was late 80's indie, 60's pop rock and late 70's punk. Alice in Chains was Heavy Metal and Blues rock. Soundgarden was Heavy Metal and punk rock. Pearl Jam is 70's classic rock and late 70's punk with little bit of Neil Young. It was a kind of musical fan fiction made by kids who just loved collecting and listening to old records and pretending to be rock stars, performing for each other. Instead of being a specific musical style, it was a reaction by a generation of kids with access to so many different styles of music and loving a lot of them at the same time.
