Metallica's Black Album, Pearl Jam's Ten, Guns N' Roses' Use Your Illusion I & II, RHCP's Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger, and Nirvana's Nevermind were all release within 41 DAYS OF EACH OTHER in 1991. Vulgar Display of Power (Feb 1992) among others wasn't too far ahead or behind. I was 18 years old. What a awesome time to be alive.
Haha, yep! I wasn't prepared for this one, but it was awesome. Exceeded my expectations. I am very excited to hear what else Pantera has waiting for me!
This album is top tier! They released this at the same time as metallicas black album so I can also see the similarities between the two. Love your reaction! You should check out the debut album! Cowboys from hell!
You're right, it did come out around the same time as the Black album. Man, lots of good stuff in the early 90's! The bands were killing it during that time period. And I'll definitely plan on a Cowboys From Hell reaction too! That'll be a lot of fun to hear I'm sure.
I remember buying the tape when it had just come out when I was pretty young. I popped it into the family car cassette deck while waiting for my parents to finish shopping. Even though I was already well versed in the likes of Anthrax and Metallica by that point, Vulgar Display of Power still managed to blow my mind. I have remained immersed in music - especially metal - all of my life, but haven’t had many other experiences listening to something new like I did that afternoon.
Was NOT expecting this but an awesome surprise. "By Demons Be Driven" will forever go on high energy playlists for me. Also, I must once again request that you finish your Hum journey with Downward is Heavenward and then Inlet. Inlet is a sneaky, absolutely masterpiece.
Aloha Molly! I wasn't a huge Pantera fan, but for some reason I could listen to this album. It's so good. I need to convince you to do Manson's discography lol.
I'm really looking forward to hearing more of their albums now! This one was such a great choice to dive into their discography, so much variety on this one.
Far Beyond Driven should be the next Pantera Album. You'll see the shift from thrash/punk into new genre where Pantera were now the ones defining metal. Most bands devolved into softer, commercial, pop sounds, while Pantera uniquely got more and more heavier.
@mollyesanborn Listen to all of their albums, including the glam albums. You will hear that they get heavier with each album, and yes they get heavier than Vulgar. Far Beyond Driven is heavier than that. Trendkill is heavier than FBD. When you listen to Reinventing The Steel, make sure you listen to the new Terry Date remix from 2020. Terry's fingerprints are all over the albums from Cowboys through Trendkill, and he was considered as the 5th member of the band. His remix is way better than the original release.

Definitely need to listen to Cowboys From Hell, Pantera's first commercial album success. A lot of great tracks on it. Also, next time you dabble in grunge, please give Temple of a Dog a listen. That band and album are stellar, and you will not be disappointed.
Definitely, I'm looking forward to doing more Pantera here on the channel! And I've got Temple of the Dog on my list as well, thanks for the suggestion :)
This album was one of my first approaches to metal, more or less when I was 18, my favorite from Pantera and one of the greatest in the history of metal in my opinion! You need to continue with both Cowboys From Hell and Far Beyond Driven, you will realize how great this band was. I love that sound between trash and groove metal, everything in its proper point, everything in its place. Incredible band, with incredible riffs. I look forward to the next ones!.
Thank you for the reaction Molly. One of my favorite bands and albums of all time. Hope you continue down the pantera rabbit hole. R.I.P to Dimebag and Vinnie. 🙏
Another great reaction! They had been around for 11 years at this point ('92) and Nu Metal (allegedly) started around the same year and for sure the genre took influences from them, nice that you picked up on that flavor.
Dimebag's guitar always had that Texas twang bounce to it being heavy and brutal at the same time, very unique as Dime himself who had his own language! RIP Dimebag Darrell, Getcha Pull 333🤘
Molly... lol... You just listened to 'F*cking Hostile", which makes most people want to run around and destroy sh*t. The song ends and you commentate like a Pro Golf announcer on Sunday afternoon. I Love it!!!!
So glad you got to hear this amazing metal group, that has been keeping me company from my early adulthood and last teen years. 🔥 You might have heard that the bands guitarist; always remembered, always loved Dimebag Darrel Abbott was one of the all time best guitarists , that perfected the sound of his playing by hours of practice with his brother, Vinnie Paul Abbott, the drummer. These guys will go with me to the end. Just love the heaviness in it all!!!❤️🔥✨
I cant remember who it was but one of the YT vocal coach reactors concluded that Dimebag's guitar style is far more that of a vocalist. Ever since hearing that it's kinda clicked in my head, like an epiphany of truth. And that sharpness suddenly jumped out at me as a virtuoso singer
Unlike a lot of metal/hard rock, etc. players who used Marshalls amps, Dimebag used Randall's which was high gain solid state instead of tubes. Gave him the 'chainsaw' tone. Loved his sound on their 90's albums. I was able to closely replicate the sound using DOD Death Metal pedal and a eq in the mid 90's.
This was a nice surprise, seeing you react to my favorite album from my favorite band. Yeah, they were known back in the day for 2 things - their crazy ass live shows and the guitarist, Dimebag Darrell. He and his brother Vinnie Paul on the drums (may they RIP) started the group and released 3 indie albums that are not easy to find. They also had a different sound, more glam/hard rock. When they recruited vocalist Phil Anselmo, they became the groove metal kings you hear on this album. Hopefully you come back to them at some point and if you do, I recommend checking out their major label debut, Cowboys From Hell.
Oh awesome! I can see why this is your favorite album, this thing is absolutely jam packed with energy and a lot of variety too. Such a fantastic introduction to Pantera's music. I'll definitely be doing more of their albums, I'd be really curious to check out their early glam rock projects too, that would be very interesting to hear!
Fantastic band, fantastic album, I remember the hilarious stories from various band members on how they got the picture for the album cover...Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven, and The Great Southern Trendkill are all solid albums
Far Beyond Driven actually hit number one in the mid-nineties. The irony of that is mind blowing in the era where hip hop was in it's prime. You need to have a listen for sure.
I'm not sure if it was pointed out already, but on Live in a Hole one of the distortion effects used is a talk box (sometimes referred to as voice box). It's an effect that lets you control the sound of the guitar using your voice, kinda mixing them together. A famous example of its use is Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi, where you can almost hear the guitar go "wow wow" in its verses. Awesome reaction! And what an album to start with Pantera, arguably their best but definitely check out more of them! Well earned sub from me, keep up the great work! ❤
This is nice, Molly. Unexpected! Putting in my request for the metal band "Slaughter To Prevail." Think you would be pretty jazzed by their stuff. 👍💯 Edit: And as a little bonus, Alex Terrible the lead singer of Slaughter to Prevail comments on a lot of reactors channels when they listen to his stuff. Cool dude. 👍
Thanks for watching! Hope you dig the Pantera content, I'll definitely be doing more of their albums. This was a great introduction to their music. And I'll be sure to add Slaughter To Prevail to my list, I'd love to get to them in the future! :)
@@mollyesanbornDig it for sure Molly. Love that you enjoy checking out a wide range of music. Also, if you do check out Slaughter to Prevail in the future, "Kolostom" is the album everyone would recommend. It has some of their biggest hits. 👍💯
Absolute amazing biggest punch in the face in history of metal !!!! This album change history of whole generation X!!!Nothing was never same,Vince Paul,Rex,Phil Anselmo and Dimebag Darrell record music like no one before
The reason for my having liked this album was because of Walk, since it was used as the theme song (well that and a cover version if it by a band named Kilgore) for former ECW wrestler Rob Van Dam. And it has a very easy and chantable chorus as well that doesn't hurt. But A New Level, Hollow, and This Love are awesome as well. I only slightly prefer Cowboys From Hell over this one, but this album is epic as well. Great reaction, Molly, love your candid expressions and mannerisms lol.
you should react to: - Cowboys From Hell - Far Beyond Driven - The Great Southern Trendkill - Reinventing The Steel Pantera is definitely something else.
I don't see to many reactions of The Great Southern Trendkill, that was my first album of theirs I bought because of the album cover, was instantly a fan and got me more into Heavy Metal.
When this album came out I remember going with my friends to midnight bowling. They had lights and a DJ. I’d always request metal and he never had any. So I brought my CD case. People would request some from my music. I would always request Fucking Hostile. I’m a recreational bowler at best, but when that song hit, it it was strikes. I wouldn’t think about anything but rolling straight. Silly story now that I’m old. At 14 or so, my son found my cds and fell in love with Dime and Pantera. So much so, he taught himself to play and now at 21 has more guitar’s than he can play, as well at a couple of Dimebag editions. Great reaction.
So glad you reacted to Pantera. One of the most important bands in metal. They kept metal going through the 90s when grunge and alt rock dominated. RiP Dimebag and Vinnie Paul. Cowboys From Hell and Far Beyond Driven are great albums too. Pantera's is called groove metal. It is not as thrash sounding as band like Overkill, Kreator, and Slayer. Or even 80s Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. If you have not done Anthrax then Among the Living is a must. One of the best thrash metal albums of all time.
First video I've watched from you, and I love that you've listened to the whole album. You asked at one point if there was 2 vocalists, no. That's all Phil. Phil in particular very much changed his vocals on this album with the screaming/distortion he placed on his vocals. Pantera was good about evolving their sound on every single album. You asked which Pantera album next... that's hard to pick just one album. I'd like to say just listen to their albums chronologically starting at Cowboys From Hell... but maybe do the album that reached #1 on Billboard 200 charts: Far Beyond Driven.
Yes......YES!!!!!!!!! PANTERA, LET'S F'N GO! This and Cowboys from Hell I have played the hell out of. Especially Walk, that is a heavy metal anthem. I still miss Dimebag Darryl, he was taken from us way too soon.
Pantera is amazing! This was a spectacular introduction to their music, no wonder they've been suggested so much by you all in the comments. Can't wait to hear Cowboys From Hell, along with the rest of their discography!
That 'percussive element' in This Love you mention sounds like a broom being swept across a floor....is an electronic sampled instrument called a cabasa. A cabasa is a metal cylinder with a wooden handle. Around the cylinder are strands of metal beads. One can shake it, or use their hand and push the metal beads while turning the handle of the cylinder to get that scrape/broom wooshy-sweep effect. But Vinnine (the Drummer) used an electronic sample of that sound effect. He had two electronic pads mouned on his drum kit one pad was for the electronic cabasa and the other pad trigger the wooden 'side stick' click sound effect you hear after the cabasa in This Love
Yeah, I was just comparing it to other things I've already heard on the channel. Hearing this album it's very clear that Pantera was a huge inspiration for the nu metal bands that came after them.
@@mollyesanborn Absolutely. But it's like they took Pantera, and dumbed it down. There are some gems, but I found most of it to be generic, and uninspired.
As much as I love this one, still think that The great southern trendkill is their top, closely followed by far beyond driven. This band is a great way to link the late 80's thrash metal and the early 90's alt metal. They make that transition so smooth.
Ooh I cannot wait to hear both of those albums! Vulgar Display of Power was fantastic, what a great introduction to this band. And yes that link you mentioned between the 80's and 90's metal sound is so accurate, this album was a great blend of both styles.

@@RobbHollen Yeah that's just crazy. I was 16, and I bought every single one of these albums. Best time for music imo.
"Ive never heard anything from pantera before" Oh girl youre in for a ride
I guess it's a good thing she didn't start with "Ride my Rocket"
Haha, yep! I wasn't prepared for this one, but it was awesome. Exceeded my expectations. I am very excited to hear what else Pantera has waiting for me!
@@tommj4365 what the hell is Ride my Rocket?
This album is top tier! They released this at the same time as metallicas black album so I can also see the similarities between the two. Love your reaction! You should check out the debut album! Cowboys from hell!
You're right, it did come out around the same time as the Black album. Man, lots of good stuff in the early 90's! The bands were killing it during that time period. And I'll definitely plan on a Cowboys From Hell reaction too! That'll be a lot of fun to hear I'm sure.
This album came out in 1992
As badass as the first half of this record is, the second half is ridiculous! Loved this Molly!
There will never be another Pantera. A beautiful symphony of distilled aggression.
Yes, another childhood favorite of mine! I cannot WAIT for this one!
This one's gonna skyrocket in views I'm predicting it now lol
Pantera is absolutely awesome, I'm so glad to finally be getting into their music! I'll be doing more of their albums for sure 🔥
My favorite pantera album hands down and one of my top 10 favorite metal albums of all time.
Oh yeah, I'd love some Marilyn on this channel 🖤
Great video! Hope you consider checking out more pantera. The Great Southern Trendkill is definitely a good one to check out
Glad you enjoyed the reaction! I'll definitely do more Pantera, I loved Vulgar Display of Power. So much energy on this record!
I like the last 2 Albums more but i do feel this one and Cowboys From Hell are a great introduction to the band.
That'll be interesting to hear, although I can't imagine Pantera getting heavier than Vulgar Display of Power?!... I'm excited to check it out!

“ well that was track 4 fucking hostile” I’m 😂😂😂😂 auto sub
Haha glad you enjoyed the reaction! :)
Very brutal and violent grooves from Pantera without losing that cool fun Texas boys factor. 🤘🏽
You nailed it, even though this record is brutally heavy it still has a fun factor that makes it incredibly entertaining too. I love that blend!
Dimebag's guitar always had that Texas twang bounce to it being heavy and brutal at the same time, very unique as Dime himself who had his own language! RIP Dimebag Darrell, Getcha Pull 333🤘
LETS GO! Great choice.
Heck yeah! This album was a fantastic choice, tons of energy and so much variety with its sound.
i agree
Groove Heavy Metal, never thought you could put Groove and HM together, but man Pantera did it.
Molly... lol... You just listened to 'F*cking Hostile", which makes most people want to run around and destroy sh*t. The song ends and you commentate like a Pro Golf announcer on Sunday afternoon. I Love it!!!!
A game changer of an album at the time, still stands up as one of the best metal albums of all time.
So glad you got to hear this amazing metal group, that has been keeping me company from my early adulthood and last teen years. 🔥
You might have heard that the bands guitarist; always remembered, always loved Dimebag Darrel Abbott was one of the all time best guitarists , that perfected the sound of his playing by hours of practice with his brother, Vinnie Paul Abbott, the drummer. These guys will go with me to the end. Just love the heaviness in it all!!!❤️🔥✨
I love the tone of Dimebag's guitar, to me it's really "metallic" sounding. Almost has an industrial metal quality to it
I can hear that too! Sort of an empty clanginess to it if that makes sense. I love it too, it adds a unique element to their sound.
Fantastic band, fantastic album, I remember the hilarious stories from various band members on how they got the picture for the album cover...Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven, and The Great Southern Trendkill are all solid albums
wasn't it something like, the guy was punched in the face 31 or 32 times at $10 punch to get that shot
Far Beyond Driven actually hit number one in the mid-nineties. The irony of that is mind blowing in the era where hip hop was in it's prime. You need to have a listen for sure.
Oh that is awesome, I didn't know that! I will definitely have to give Far Beyond Driven a listen too, can't wait to hear it.
FUCKING FUCKING FUCKING HOSTIIILLEEEEEEE!!!!*mic breaks*
R.I.P. The Abbot Brothers, the Van Halen brothers of the 90s!
I heard that he threw the mic in a bucket of bbq sauce to get the distortion at the very end.
@@Musicfan88.If that's true then holy shit that's hilarious
I'm not sure if it was pointed out already, but on Live in a Hole one of the distortion effects used is a talk box (sometimes referred to as voice box). It's an effect that lets you control the sound of the guitar using your voice, kinda mixing them together. A famous example of its use is Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi, where you can almost hear the guitar go "wow wow" in its verses.
Awesome reaction! And what an album to start with Pantera, arguably their best but definitely check out more of them! Well earned sub from me, keep up the great work! ❤
Love your expressions!!..hear this album the first time it came out was crazy!..it is a masterpiece!!..even the “aquestic” parts!..😂❤🤘🔥😈😈😈
Hey can I say something,
I just found your channel, and i think i FELL for you 🤘🏽🖤
Such an incredible album.
Absolutely, glad I finally gave this one a listen!
This is nice, Molly. Unexpected! Putting in my request for the metal band "Slaughter To Prevail." Think you would be pretty jazzed by their stuff. 👍💯
Edit: And as a little bonus, Alex Terrible the lead singer of Slaughter to Prevail comments on a lot of reactors channels when they listen to his stuff. Cool dude.
They invented groove metal with this album. My jaw dropped to the floor the first time I heard Mouth For War
You should check out "The Great Southern Trendkill" next, it is my favorite Pantera album.
This is a great album! The Great Southern Trendkill is another amazing one from them.
you should react to:
- Cowboys From Hell
- Far Beyond Driven
- The Great Southern Trendkill
- Reinventing The Steel
Pantera is definitely something else.
It's a masterpiece and dude the first metal album I ever listened to in 1995 when I was 15.. talking about setting the bar high 🙏🏼🔥
A masterpiece indeed, I'm so happy that I'm finally getting into Pantera's music!
I don't see to many reactions of The Great Southern Trendkill, that was my first album of theirs I bought because of the album cover, was instantly a fan and got me more into Heavy Metal.
The Great Southern Trendkill is crazy intense and bizarre. I'd give that one a listen next!
Wow. More than 22k views just 2 weeks in! 🔥
Love it! ❤
Thanks! :)
I love seeing ppl that aren’t metal heads can appreciate the music.
Underrated channel. Great job!
Thanks so much! :)
When you get to it, Great Southern Trendkill has the best album opening of all albums ever. You're in for a treat Molly 😊
Ooh I am looking forward to hearing it!
Classic record, you should check out The Great Southern Trendkill, it's their heaviest work :)
I can't wait to hear it!
You mentioned how they reminded you of Type O a little bit. They were pretty close and would tour with each other back in the day.
That's cool, I wasn't aware that they toured together!
There's 1 more song - Light Comes Out Of Black (Feat. Rob Halford). :)
this album is proof why dimebag is one of the best guitarists of all time, and yes pantera only uses 1 guitar and 1 bass kinda nuts
Thanks so much for the explanation! I love that sound, such a unique element to This Love.
You're killing me with the nu metal comparison. This was before thst era. Dont mind me, I'm old😂
Yeah, I was just comparing it to other things I've already heard on the channel. Hearing this album it's very clear that Pantera was a huge inspiration for the nu metal bands that came after them.
@@mollyesanborn Absolutely. But it's like they took Pantera, and dumbed it down. There are some gems, but I found most of it to be generic, and uninspired.
Now,here is an album that when you put in on,there is no reason to hop over any song!A true masterpiece!!!
Seconding Trendkill as my personal favorite. I'd say it's their most aggressive record but still has that iconic Pantera groove. So much fun!
nice reaction! I also really recommend The Great Southern Trend Kill, another awesome album. 🤘
I was in 6th grade when this album came out, I was so miserable sitting in school all day & couldn’t wait to get home blast this album.
One mic one guitar one band. Forever stronger than all.
That smoothness you mentioned is something people refer to as groove metal and these guys were often credited as the pioneers of groove metal.
Check out Philip Hansen Anselmo (Pantera ) in Down - II: A Bustle In The Hedgerow. The other band members are Pepper Keenan (Corrosion Of Conformity)guitar,Kirk Windstein (Crowbar) guitar,Rex Brown (Pantera)bass and Jimmy Bower drums.
Pantera swings. With Dimebag’s raspy tone and Phil’s growl they came up with true originality.
