1982 Mustang Donor Car Introduction

- In early May 2015 I drove down to Frankfort KY to look at a 1982 Mustang in a Walmart parking lot. I ended up taking her home. Here's the first look at the donor car that will contribute many of the parts for my Ford Fairmont project. A lot of the essential components are there, but there is much work to be done as you'll see in the video. Considering what I paid and what I got, I'm not disappointed. I believe I'll be able to get most of the parts I need for the project.
The engine is a 302 bored out to 306. It has Ford racing heads as well as other upgraded internals. I'll likely dig in to check those out at some point. The car is a 5 speed with 3:08 gears and a welded differential. The suspension is defiantly shot, but I may be able to recondition it and use it. I'll just have to figure out how I can swap over the driveshaft and exhaust. For now I'm driving the car to sort out the issues. When the day comes, I'll drop out all the parts I'm using and get to work installing them in the fairmont. I'm very much looking forward to that day.
BTW, I LOVE the noise it makes.

I really love the noise it makes. ruclips.net/video/4H5tYEjkTuI/видео.html
Many don't know! How many parts is there even though given what you give for!
Motor trans rear would cost more out of the car! So motor made it worth it.
I had 84 1/2 302 throttle body 5 speed manual with 373 didn't like the 373 because top speed was only 140,but now it was stock factory motor had 5 speed auto so that had to go. But can't wait to see what kind of beast you unleash with fairmont!
EricTheCarGuy I'm happy that you are happy. Big boys need big toys :)
EricTheCarGuy they look like flowmaster super 10''s
EricTheCarGuy
welded spyder gears is a poor man's Limited Slip Differential. It's common in drag racing and drifting.
EricTheCarGuy
That's kind of funny. Everyone chases the 87-92 fox bodies and I've really become fond of the '82 GT. How ironic that you happened to pick an 82 up? lol. One question...when are you growing back your sideburns, Eric? One of my classmates watches your show and we both rock ETCG sideburns. lol
EricTheCarGuy you looked so at home in that thing at 12:57 "i love it, absolutely love it " *drops gear, plants foot on the gas and grins at camera*
Really looking forward to more videos in this series!
Living in the UK we never hear anything like the sound of this V8! This sounds awesome. Nice one Eric! Keep the updates coming
You can get an aluminum drive shaft from a Crown Victoria P71 police package car and get it shortened.
Easily available , one dozen for a dime.
One heck of a project car. Sounds so mean and it scoots along nicely. Great purchase.
mylifeisJDM Its the parts that cost the money not the body or looks. Also its a track car and has most of the things he will need. He may have saved money buying this car as a donor.
i guess Im randomly asking but does anyone know of a way to get back into an instagram account??
I was stupid forgot the account password. I love any assistance you can offer me.
@Camdyn Zaid Instablaster =)
@Reece Andrew thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm.
Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Reece Andrew It worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much, you saved my account :D
Yes that engine in the Fairmont will be fun and a surprise for a lot of people
SuperCrudedude actually just seeing a Fairmont rolling down the road under it's own power would be the 1st surprise.
whatever's under the hood, 2nd surprise. :l
Oh man... it's going to be amazing to see the Fairmont moving WHILE making that awesome noise!
DAMN! I think I had as much fun sitting in the passenger seat looking through the lens of the camera as you did driving. Had a good time thanks Eric!
I love it. Now that we have a Mustang with a V8 and loud mufflers, and a stick shift, maybe we can drive it and play with it so that when we transfer everything over to the Fairmont it will be ready to go. What a sacrifice you are making for science. LOL. I'm right there with you, Eric. Keep on doin' what you're doin'. I'm from Kentucky. I love it that you bought it country style.
Great update! I love both cars and can't wait to see what they make when you combine their parts.
Eric that was great reminds me of my teenage years. I had 2 mustangs. The first one I worked two fast food jobs and put about 10-12K in the engine and trans. It was the 2.8 Liter German V6 from a 79 with gear to gear timing and a solid lift cam. I set it up with a Isky Cam, after market racing heads, and a blower from Racer Walsh in FL where they built them for drag cars. With its short stroke that thing would run 8-9K RPMs all day long and the cam didn't hit it's peak power till 6,000 RPM. It was a 81 without the hatch back. I wrapped it around a pole going about 120 in the snow one night. I then got an 82 with T-Tops and a hatch back out of the junk yard and put the power train in that one. The T-Top and rusty floor pans made the body so weak that after a night of drag racing I would have to put in in reverse and floor it a few times to bend the body back strait. Eventually the body split and I had got married and had a kid on the way and had to sell her.
***** your a scary man
Imagining the Fairmont with that sound. Holy crap!
glad you're going through with the fairmont project, can't wait for more episodes!
I'm soo excited to see how all this turns out!!!!
I started to envy you from the moment you started that engine. Godly sound
Ah, I'm intrigued Eric, looking forward to this series for sure Taking the Fairmont to the next level!!!!
That thing sounds AWESOME! So excited to see the Fairmont transformation. This is making me want to go shop for a Mustang now...
i cant wait to see more. Definitely will be paying more attention and looking for follow up videos. good job eric. nice pick.
Seeing and hearing this makes me miss my 86 notchback.
Can't wait to see the out come of this project. Looks like fun.

I'm happy that you found such a great engine
This is great, really looking forward to videos on this transplant. Good luck mate!
Nice buy Eric. Looking forward to the next videos of the project. Yes, please take it to the drag strip to see how it does.
In the words of david fry burger, MINT!!!

That is a sweet sound. Beautiful!
Oh man! That Mustang is actually an awesome car!
That Fairmont is going to be awesome when it is done!
Yes! This project has me so excited. I hope you are too!
Cool car Eric. Can't wait to see future vids on both cars!!!
Awesome to see etcg in a cool project car build!
That things got some nuts, the Fairmont is going to kick some ass....💪💪💪
Man i just love seeing Eric in that Mustang, it suits him perfectly. I can tell you are excited man.
Car is awesome dude, perfect for your purposes and looks fun as hell to drive.
Super interesting project and car part transfer...enjoyed it...really captured my attention.
hey eric really happy you have a donor car for your project sounds awesome cant wait for the next episode
Eric's expression was like a kid in a candy store or getting a new bike, worth every cent just on that.
It's awesome to have a donor during any swap, I've done swaps before and I must have spent twice as much in buying random parts than I would if I had just gotten a parts car to begin with. and that rear suspension is scary as hell!
im loving that fairmont keep up the good work
Im a honda head and as such, I am used to the sound of a 4 cylinder. My god that mustang makes a beautiful sound.
That Mustang, What a Pile!!! :) I Love it!!
In my opinion these intro type of videos should be a bonus to the regular Friday auto repair video or even the Wednesday tool review video. I am sure I'm not alone here but on my Friday mornings I look forward to the Friday repair video.
Did good, a very good start on the donor car, will take some rebuilding but that will be the fun and well worth it.
This is the video I have been waiting for. Thanks Erik
That engine sounds like a monster!!
This video was a load fun thanks Eric an guy.
I love that sound!
That, my friend, is what we like to call a "Kentucky go fast".
Great video, good to see you having fun - didnt see many corners on that route though!
Now. Only until now, am I excited for this channel. Yeah!
It has begun, the Fairmont will be a sleeper!
I do agree that car sounds amazing
Awesome find!
Damn that sounds good, nice one Eric.
Man..What a beast!!!! It sounds AWESOME! I have never got to drive one of those :-(
Sounds awesome. Looking forward to seeing the install :)
You are to funny, love your videos man, I look forward to watching them every Friday
Awesome mustang. I sure love that roar it made. I'm saving money so I can get a 94 mustang. Can't wait to get it. :-) can't wait to see the next video
Great parts car, and that will make for one hell of a fun Fairmont. On the drive, I swear I could hear the trunk pans buckling over the bumps.
I'd almost be willing to pay 3k to hear that noise every time I hit the pedal! Thanks for the project update!
Pure sweetness, Eric. My first car was a 4 banger 82 Mustang, oh the fun times I had in that LOL
Too bad Ford didn't come through for your for a crate engine, nor did they come through for FordTechMakuloco for helping him fix Fords across America. Too bad you guys...
Love the project!
Its awesome seeing you have this toy and a cool project to work on. Before the fairmont project, I didn't think you were into performance that much.
Nice find. It sounds great, and moves even better....great donor car. I wouldn't run welded spider gears on the street, though; everyone I know who did always had the welds crack due to cornering stresses.
Sorry, just watching this for the first time, and all I have to say is.... "SAVE THE MANUALS!!". Thank you for being a manual person too :P
I just replayed 11:42-11:52 over and over again. Granted, I'm not a Mustang fan (especially that era) but that was a nice sounding engine.
Great update! Super excited about the project, would love to see more progress. If there is anyway for us to help you move things along you have my support.
Awesome four eyed mustang and great video
Hey Eric I have been following your Fairmont build because quite frankly it's just plain cool and different. You have inspired me to buy a Fairmont of my own and do the same type of build. So last year I purchased a 1978 two door with 36k on it. This year so far I've pulled the entire driveline and am preparing to swap in a 5.0 motor from a Lincoln LSC that I parted out. I also have the transmission and the rear. I'm excited to see how your car turns out. I can't wait to turn mine into quite a sleeper. Good luck man. I'll be watching!
that engine sound.... holy hell!!!
To all those that are crying that Eric should save the Mustang, What you forget he's going to turn the Fairmont INTO that Mustang. Except without the frame and suspension issues. The Fairmont will be a lot safer, more stable, and a better foundation for all that power. The Mustang has run it's course, let it go!
looks like a great donor car!
Good score, the motor seems pretty healthy. Looking forward to more of the project. When you are done with that mustang I could use the rear bumper, tail light lenses and the wheels if you aren't going to use them :P
That Mustang sounds just like your old video intro! That's great
That is awesome dude! Not bad for $3k. Can't wait!
Eric said knackered, awesome
Awesome, can't wait!
that 306 makes a really nice sound!!
This is a awsome project
This will be a great project car Eric. Hopefully you make some videos real soon. Thanks.
Sounds awesome buddy! Ford is the way to go!
11:42 that sound though 😍😍😍
No matter how much of a rotary engine fan I am, big V8s really do sound nice :D
That cam lope is amazingggggg
You'll fall in love with it, and won't wanna sacrifice it.
you are soo cool man, awesome vid !
It really does make a great noise.
YES! FINALLY! IM SO EXCITED!
Hey Eric, the mufflers are flowmaster 1 chamber, I have them on my fox. Keep up the great vids and cant wait to see how everything comes out. Foxbodies Rock!!
Also look into the torque box reinforcement kit while you're there. Good thing to do while the suspension is apart. Will help keep from tearing the stock mounting points from the sub frame.
Exciting stuff! :D
love your vids eric
"We did go sideways there at the start... But i liked it" lol the way you said that made me laugh.
aww, man Eric, you totally lifted! lol! "thought that was a cop" lol!
I had a 84 with the 5.0L 302 bore over edelbrock intake and carb and a nice cam in it muncie 5 speed 5 lugs traction bars full headers no cats and dyno flow mufflers cameleon paint job and more 400+HP loved that car but interior was shot the guy I bought it from did all the go fast stuff first lol. I miss that car.
I love it bab
Sounds so good, now I want to hit up craigslists for a foxbody lol
hey eric,
Awesome buy! would love to see some DIY vids on the mustang before you tore it down. definitely those bushings in the rear subframe, and maybe tracing down those leaks
it does sound really good :)
10:01 and 11:41 is why I love Mustangs. Especially Foxbodys.
