  • Where the Cat and Wolf Play... Should Geralt kill Gaetan?
    In this video, I try to show all of the evidence that we have about Gaetan's massacre at Honorton and also give my opinion on whether or not he should die as a result.
    Thank you so much for watching and tell me in the comment section, what do you think Geralt should do with Gaetan? Please consider subscribing to the channel and liking the video if you enjoyed!

    Thanks for watching! What do YOU think Gaetan's fate should be? Also, I realize saying Gaetan shows remorse for his actions might be a bit controversial. To me, it felt like he knew what he did was wrong. My interpretation is that he thinks losing his temper like he did was justified but the actions were still wrong and not optimal. Anyways, I thought it was worth clarifying because I don't think Gaetan shows remorse completely.

      I didn’t spare for the same reasons you mentioned. He doesn’t seem sincere. He killed women and children and just shrugs it off as he just lost it. Had he just killed the men who did him wrong then I would he left him. Cool video and debate. I know it’s a video game but it’s just so good 🎉

    Unfortunately I went with killing him. It is understandable to say he lost his temper to the contractors and literally got stabbed in the back only because he was coming for his payment for killing the leshen for them. But he messed up by killing those villagers who weren’t aware of it. Yes he spared the girl but only because she reminded him of his sister - but what if it wasn’t? Would he still kill a child just because his temper got out of control. Plus, personally, I don’t think he sees the full scale of the massacre he committed since he does not say anything about what he’ll do to be better and it’s like ‘yes I killed them, my bad🤬’ showing no remorse. Geralt manages to compose himself when he gets cheated and just says ‘I’ll come back for my payment’ and does not threaten contractors unlike Gaetan stating ‘you wished the leshen was alive again.’
    Since Gaetan didn’t say anything on what he’ll do to control his temper, he would most likely commit a massacre like that again, or worse, kill someone he shouldn’t which will lead to hunt the rest of the Witchers and start an additional war. Some Witcher would need to take the blame instead of Gaetan and get killed as we saw with the girl who thought Geralt was Gaetan, and as a result reduce the number of living Witchers killed by other people who may be soldiers.
    Either way, those are my reasons even though Gaetan had those reasons to kill but he ruined his redeemable qualities after killing those other villagers who had no idea of this and led to the girl’s family members to get murdered. I don’t usually choose kill in the Witcher but Gaetan’s actions were different.

      Well, I agree with a lot that you said. I guess what I was trying to say was : If gatean ends up saving more people than he kills (by killing monsters), maybe it's better for him to live even if he deserves to die. I'll admit that I didn't really think about the consequences it might have on other witchers, at least not to the extent that you mentioned, like a witcher hunt to kill every witchers, but it could happen. It makes the decision for me even more complex haha! I definitely get why you killed him though

      "If gatean ends up saving more people than he kills (by killing monsters), maybe it's better for him to live even if he deserves to die"
      That could be true, if the Game dialogue didn't basically confirm that this wasn't the first time he went on a slaughter spree because he lost his cool.
      At that point you really gotta ask yourself how often this happened already, because if this happened somewhat frequent there is a good chance he killed more innocents than every Monster he hunted combined.

    This quest is so good and it lets you make the final decision without having an obvious bias either way. Some other great quests have hidden outcomes because of your choices, which is fine, but this quest is different in the way it gives you a clear scenario and doesnt have hints towards which choice is morally good or bad. The problem I have with some "choice games" is that its usually obvious which direction the devs want you to take to get a certain ending, but this quest not only doesnt have that, it also doesnt have some cutscene after the fact, praising you or berating you for your choice. Its perfectly happy to leave it ambiguous, just as it would be for Geralt as he continues his journey.
    I personally killed the cat because his actions couldnt be justified to me. Massacring an entire village of people, people who were not involved in the murder attempt and who were obviously no threat and no match for a Witcher, stabbing women in the back and leaving them to bleed to death paralysed and only sparing the young girl for no reason other than because she reminded you of your sister. Losing your temper is no excuse because you are responsible for how you act and controlling yourself, especially when you are that dangerous.
    To be fair to him, I gave him a chance to have an even fight and allowed him to "drink his swallow" to give him a fair shot at saving himself. But when he cheats and stuns you it just proves his character. Kills the weak and innocent and fights dirty against those who are a fair match.
    The fight was also really fun because you are stunned the whole time so striking is harder and you cant use any potions during the fight. Such a unique quest.

  • @luciangenic
    @luciangenic 10 месяцев назад +11

    I personally always let him live except its less about whether he deserved it and more a mix of the punishment and who's delivering it.
    Gaeten did inexcusable things but I think a different punishment would be better off than killing him just because he killed others (if only the game gave that option). For me, that seems to be creating a cycle that doesn't really solve much. But more importantly I don't think Geralt is the right person to make this choice and I believe he wouldn't want to either. This quickly became a job that he didn't sign up for, he was there to take care of a leshen problem not decide someone's fate. Plus executing an intelligent creature (also without consulting any of the victims families/anyone else involved) sort of contradicts a lot of his beliefs in both the books and games.
    I could be wrong, this is only my interpetation after all, but killing Gaeten just doesn't feel like the right choice in terms of how things would play out with Geralt being forced into making the choice. So yeah wanting to stay character accurate has basically outweighed my moral debates.

    • @autumnve
      @autumnve 4 месяца назад +3

      You're kind of on the right track with how Geralt would handle this, but not quite. Geralt specifically does not kill intelligent creatures that do not harm others, but Gaetan is clearly an incredibly dangerous person. He often says that he doesn't involve himself in these kinds of matters, things that aren't his problem, because he gets nothing in return. He also contradicts himself all the time here with his actions. Geralt just isn't able to stand by while that severe an injustice is taking place, at least not one that he has the power to intervene in. In I believe the third book, he goes out of his way to slaughter a group of marauders that are torching a homestead and who are about to assault the woman living there. Hell, in the final book, in his last chapters, he bitterly tells Dandelion that he's done, ABSOLUTELY done with helping people, because it costs him so much. And yet, he dies doing exactly that, defending people being killed en masse by a mob, because thats who he is. Gaetan is a monster, in all senses of the word, and Geralt would not let that slide, in my opinion. That's why Geralt is such a good character though, right? He's conflicted and complex, with lofty ideas about morality and action, and it makes discussions around these choices possible.

If they tried to pay him less money than it costed to replenish the potions he needed to help them, that means he isn’t getting any money for food, and who knows what his potion stores are looking like right now. Sure the elder and those assisting the elder to get rid of him had to perish as it was self defense at that point, but Gaetan didn't just "lose" his temper as he claims. He let his rage take control and became the very thing Witchers are stereotyped to be; ruthless, sadistic and monstrous beings in human form.

      Which is ironic because the Blaviken incident and this one have literally zero in common. Geralt saved the Townfolk of Blaviken, but to them it looked like he went on a killing spree, because Geralt acted on Information he had and that later couldn't be confirmed, because he killed everyone who could. But the people he killed that day were not innocent, in fact they were about to round up the Townfolk and kill them one by one.
      This Guy actually did slaughter innocent people.

    I kill him every single playthrough. The village elder and cronies have nothing to do with the other innocent villagers. No proof that that the rest of villagers were involved. Seems unlikely as well. Add in the fact he killed women and children in their homes? No dice.
    It’s clear that Gaeten has temper issues and mentally fragile(probably from his years on the hunt and being frowned upon and ostracized). If he would have stopped at the Elder and his cronies, I’d have spared him. Being a Witcher and a part of a dwindling group of people in that profession doesn’t excuse it for me. -'but gaetan did kill monsters to save peoples lives'

    8. while gaetan in the barn, the elder and a few man think they can take on a wounded witcher, thinking it would not be to much of a hassle because of the wound

    It's ridiculous how people believe this to be a difficult decision.
    After killing the peasants who tried to murder him, he went out of his way to murder unarmed men and women. You don't accidentally go into the other huts and slaughter unarmed men and women who are trying to hide from you. Losing control is not an excuse, if you slaughter people while under the influence of drugs or while having a psychotic breakdown you still go to jail or an institution for life in the modern world. Letting him go free is a ludicrous choice and the only other choice in the game is killing him, so that's what has to happen.

    • @muskeys
      @muskeys  10 месяцев назад +1

      I guess my take is that if he still saves more people than he kills, it kinda means he might do more good than evil.. For example, if Gaetan kills 10 innocents but he also kills 3 monsters.. Let's say the 3 monsters would've killed 15 innocents.. In total him being alive pretty much saves 5 lives.. That's the only argument I think to keep him alive but morally he deserves to die for sure. The fact that he is a Witcher and Witchers a rarer and rarer gives the whole quest a bit more meaning in my opinion.

    • @R3puLsiv3
      @R3puLsiv3 10 месяцев назад

      I guess you could make the argument that he potentially saves more lives by being left alive, but that logic would create weird implications. Imagine if we found out that a heart surgeon was a serial killer who kills once every year. Sure he saves hundreds of lives if we just don't lock him up, but somehow I think a judge (and people generally) might not take well to this kind of argument :D

    He lost his temper because he got cheated, very badly, but to slaughtered a WHOLE VILLAGE but one little girl that probably only lives because she reminded him of his sister... Sure, being a Witcher isn't easy, and we through Geralt surely know this, but if we spare him there is not indication that this won't happen again, specially with the dialogue presented to us and how he doesn't seem to show any remorse, so to me, he's just a monster at that point, and as a Witcher we have but one job to do...
