I like that you're arguing with the laws of a country you're not from without knowing the laws about the country that you're not from. US international driver's licenses aren't valid in Vietnam. It's the law. They let you off while you were the one breaking the law. Also, some people won't understand that the complete mistranslations were not accurate. I feel like you know that, though. Had a buddy go to Vietnam, had to bribe the police 4 separate times while he motorcycled across the country, crazy how things can change drastically from border to border in so many ways
Was your friend riding illegally? If not, then bribing isn't necessarily. Unfortunately, many whom ride there are doing it illegally. An IDP isn't enough if you're from a country that didn't sign the 1968 Vienna Convention (this includes the US, Canada, Australia, etc.)

Im currently in vietnam with an IDP from America me and a friend got fined 1,500,000 dong. There is a weird treaty that makes it illegal for Americans to drive even with IDP. Only been fined once so far in 4 weeks

@@clayfreeny9650yeah they ripped him off man. Normally they charge like 10 bucks or something. Acceptance of idp depends on mutual acceptance of each other's drivers licences. @@JB-ef7ks I tried bribing them but they wouldn't take it. They had like 20 foreigners pulled over and everyone had to pay the 1.5 mill if they wanted to keep their bike.

Police can go off crazy power trips on their own, so I bet it’s a lot harder to get off with just a warning if you’re not white. Crazy police story: my dad was beaten by a police officer on the 4th of July one year. He was in a public park when some other people shot off a bunch of fireworks and then scrammed. He was the only one left in the park when the police arrived, so they assumed he shot these fireworks. They slammed him against his car hood, beat him, and broke his car windows. They were literally being polite, and even called you 'ban' or 'friend' while you weren't there, and you translated it to some racist nonsense about communism vs. imperialism.

Saying "I love you all" and hearing back "I love youuuuu" ... That's so sweet. Vietnam is like China but not dirty or overpopulated.
Tell people you love em and you'll be surprised what you get back! I had two strangers tell me they loved me in one day, and didn't even say it myself beforehand. But if you feel it, yeah, it's there, doesn't even need to be said. The acid the day before probably helped too.

Acceptance of idp depends on mutual acceptance of each other's drivers licences. A lot of western countries don't recognize licenses from developing nations (because they're often bought and standards/requirements are much lower), so that's on your govt. much more than Vietnam.

Crazy police story: my dad was beaten by a police officer on the 4th of July one year. He was in a public park when some other people shot off a bunch of fireworks and then scrammed.
