The subtitles were not appropriate. The folks who were very kind to him were not aware of how he was making fun of them. He appears friendly towards them then dehumanizes them behind their back. You telling folks to lighten up makes you complacent to this form of abuse.
That scene with you drinking with the Cambo dudes under the house with the “subtitles” is genuinely one of the funniest things I’ve seen for a LONG time!! I’ve been in Cambodia many times. People are genuinely friendly and kind and the Cambodian kids are generally very polite. We were there and ask school kids ( about 10 year old) for a direction, they bowed to us when we said good bye.

Seeing this reminds me of the time when I would see someone foreign and everyone would flock to them and invite them in to drink and smoke. This showed me what it must feel like for them to be surrounded by people that really want to hang out with them and show them a good time but the language barrier makes things weird.
All the women in the village just idly smiling behind the table is killing me, every meet up with the locals is like this xD it makes me wonder if they partake in the chill drinking sessions with the boys

Seeing this reminds me of the time when I would see someone foreign and everyone would flock to them and invite them in to drink and smoke. This showed me what it must feel like for them to be surrounded by people that really want to hang out with them and show them a good time but the language barrier makes things weird.
All the women in the village just idly smiling behind the table is killing me, every meet up with the locals is like this xD it makes me wonder if they partake in the chill drinking sessions with the boys

Like sooo often in Souteastasia....loveable, warm ppl everywhere, esp. countryside...I mean, ey, they are poor, really have not much...but they invite and share, very hospitable......looooove it. Been in a few asian countries, Cambodia and Myanmar are still on my wishlist...pretty much on top.
