This brings back so many memories! Me and a friend went to Myanmar almost 20 years ago now. It was just 'opening up' a little and relatively peaceful times. Traveling was very difficult. Everyone would just keep saying, "You, meaning westerners, can't go there" haha. There were no phones or banks. Lucky a friend of ours gave us some tips. Bring small denomination US currency. Everyone would take US money and it's hard to make change. We did end up finding and buying some Myanmar money in a back alley, from under a blanket of nick nacks. We ended up with a "tour guide" as well. For a whole day he drove us around in a Cushman cart thing and took us to all the temples, etc. We ate lunch somewhere he knew and we didn't spend any money all day. In the end we gave him $20 US for the day, which was more than he asked. As for the kids, we bought little matchbox like cars and stuff like that. So always had something to give them that wasn't money. I think it helped with adults too, seeing us being nice to the kids. I think he was practicing his English, during his little speech. Everyone that would talk to us would do the same thing. "HI, my name is, I have 2 Sisters, Do you like it here in my country.." So many stories! Last quick one. We too rode some bus for 20 hours to another city. It was like a movie with so many people, smells, livestock, haha. There are no bathrooms on the bus and we didn't think of bottles. So about the time I was about to pee myself I walked up to the driver and made the international sign I have to pee. Nice video. Don't expect to make friends as a tourist man, people are hungry and poor, and you're a tourist. Mike was a decent tour guide and you should have tipped him for his time. He might have made a dollar or two from your longi, but how much do you want to make from YT for this. Without the people, you have no content. Take a few leaves out of Harald Baldrs book, he's got it spot on. Not a rant against you brother, just a bit of constructive criticism from someone who's been on this side of the world for the last few decades.
I was hoping I’d see this comment. Yeah i was shocked that he didn’t tip him / give him *any* fkng money for guiding him around the entire day. An entitled Dick move. That's just the way it goes usually. People like him need the money and try to earn a few bucks by helping tourists. If they do it like this guy it's fine for me. He has to get some money somehow. I'm surprised how many times people helped you on your journey and didn't ask for money. Absolute legends. But helping for money is the usual way in my experience.
Loving the videos until I watched this one. Conner, you've been travelling for a few years so you can't still be that naive. In what city would you find a guide to show you around for free, particularly in an impoverished part of the world? Another great video. A wonderful companion, Michael. And Yangon is my favorite city of all, Alexandria, Egypt a distant second. As far as betel nut goes, years ago on all the buses there were plastic bags in front of you to spit in. On second class busses you just spit out the window. The boat to Sittwe was covered on the sides with the nice juice stains. The Thais used to chew but now they’re ‘civilized’. You have reenergized me into seeing Yangon soon. Baobabed Lodge, below Sule Pagoda, SE, is a good hotel. $20 if you pay in Kyat, $30 in USD, including all you can eat breakfast buffet. Money change at the airport is a ripoff so change a $20 to get into town. Taxi fare from there or the bus station is 20000 kyat but I’ve done it a couple of times for 15000, 2500 kyat to the USD mid 2023 at the money changer in town. Change at any of the numerous money changers above Sule, East-West streets. They’re legit, unlike in the Bogyoke market years ago. No possibility to sell your kyat at the airport. Years ago the largest bill was equal to USD $1, so you’d have a stack of a hundred from $100. Myanmar ain’t cheap for hotels, though in Kalaw, à wonderful place despite the advent of motorcycles, one can have a room for $10ish, breakfast included. The one “benefit” of the military dictatorship is motorcycles are prohibited in Yangon. Apparently, this is due to once a wife of a military honcho being killed by a motorcyclist there. After Vietnam, a blessing Thanks again for the video.
In India Betel nut is seen as more of a working class drug. And I have seen people doing everyday tasks like driving a car while chewing it. So I don't think it's going to be strong (never tried it though). But I have read that it's highly addictive. great content btw 👍

Myanmar is religiously diverse and undiscriminated country. Like he mentioned you will find church, mosque, Hindu, Chinese and Buddhist temple almost everywhere across the country.
@chupito16 the video also couldn't have been made without the person taking the video, who did not ask michael for anything, and it's definitely smart to be wary as an American tourist - both your safety and your money
Bruh, I hope you have him a little $ at least.... yeah I get that it sort of feels 'scammy' but it's cause your small amount of $ can mean a huge amount to them. Westerners (I myself am one ...) gotta get over that feeling and shell out a few $ (not a huge amount....and as long as it's in your budget, of course) and just be happy with life.
The thing is that it's likely gonna be the 'good' / subtle "scammers" that get more from you by pretending they don't want anything (cause they learn what works with foreigners ....) . End of the day just lose the ego a bit which is what's causing you not to get "scammed" (for like $5-10$)..
I just recently found your channel and have been catching up on your videos here and there over this horrifically drab weekend..fun to watch and I do hope you do more..that said..did you really not expect michael to ask you for money? 😂..I honestly felt like he was rather pleasant about it, most are not so kind and most definitely wouldn’t spend a penny of their own on you without asking for repayment immediately. To look like a walking scam target is one thing (not much you can do there boss, they’re gonna assume you have money any way you go about life in these places)..but to shun a dude for asking for a couple bucks (the guy would have probably been happy with a $5-10 for flips sake) when he didn’t really do you any worse than any other dude who jumps on obvious tourists..dunno 🤔. Not that he was a sweetheart or anything, pretty obvious that he was trying to do what he could for his local friends and business owners on the dollars that he definitely thought you had..just gotta be more aware of that sort of thing, they’re out for themselves and their own long before a random tourist from a western country. Be trusting sure, but don’t knock people for doing the obvious in the end like it’s a bad thing 😂. This has been the experience of the traveling western white dude for the past 60 years.
I don't agree the guy was trying to scam you, but I wasn't there so I don't really know. But it looked to me like he was hustling as any of us would be in his situation. He took a lot of time out of his day to show you around, with just the chance of some compensation. I think you did him wrong here.
Those guides if characters in parts of south east Asia bring Asian values and should be given fiat cash for their part in the vlog that would other wise be a Western interpretive rant.
When the children started asking for money and you said “NOOOO… you’re very cute but NOOOOOOO!! Don’t touch me bro!” I’m sorry I died LMFAO you could’ve given lil mans a dollar 😂
see i am a burmese too but i would have not given anything either because the locals sees him as an easy target to beg just because he is white. The kids parents probably told their kids to go follow that dude around like, it would have been a different story if the kids were offering him something in return for some cash shows at least they ain't just seeing him as an easy target
@htetlynnhtun101 That’s because he’s trying to travel and film full-time. He doesn’t have a ton of subscribers and also doesn’t have unlimited money. He’s not begging, he’s asking for donations in return for more content. It’s basically a transaction, you get something for giving him something. Not at all like begging for money on the streets.
Broh, he just make me so mad with his doubtfull attitude. And he is so mean and so greedy. Deamn god when I go out here in europe I spend minumum 20 euro for nothing. Those youtubers are really the worst people acting like they are nice and cool.

this is why i dont like travelling outside of the US, everywhere you go kids and adults are trying to milk/scam you out of money, and also at risk of being robbed is very high
Imagine in altered universe, a white dude trying to get some money for his dear life while the burmese guy is talking shit about him right in front of him.
Really should’ve paid the poor guy. He spent his whole day on you, and let you record him for your travel show which probably is making you income. You should have understood he was obviously going to ask for compensation. If you don’t want that, tell them at the beginning.
Be careful pushing the kids away. Yes, they will reach into your pockets. It's a universal experience in developing countries. Obviously you are not trying to hurt them, and they are being pretty aggressive in their begging. You just don't know who they are working for or what their motivations are....Those who say simply to eat, are naïve. It's never that simple.
There are a lot of assumptions being made in these comments. He didn't show the guy asking for money. Maybe he was starting to be a bit aggressive and wouldn't leave him alone. If someone starts following you around without an invitation, there should never be an expectation to give money. It also makes it more likely that they'll pester other tourists.

Then Homeboy should've been upfront from the start such as sayin "i will show you around for this much". This american dude ( Dunno his name, just watched this channel) don't even ask for homeboy service, the homeboy is the one that volunteer himself. He has no obligation to pay him.
This guy may travel but the concept of different norms will never dawn on him.
He's american
The disappointment in the tour guides' "OK" after you played football with the locals had me dying😂😂😂
Nice video.
Don't expect to make friends as a tourist man, people are hungry and poor, and you're a tourist. Mike was a decent tour guide and you should have tipped him for his time. He might have made a dollar or two from your longi, but how much do you want to make from YT for this.

Most child beggers in developing countries are organised by crimainal gangs. Don't give them money. It will indirectly enourage child abductions.
Interestingly, the narrator keeps on saying "no, I don't have money" to the kids begging, but he himself is begging for money for his travels.. His videos are fun to watch, though. I love his fun and easy way of travelling. Keep on traveling!
That's just the way it goes usually. People like him need the money and try to earn a few bucks by helping tourists. If they do it like this guy it's fine for me. He has to get some money somehow.

@chupito16 the video also couldn't have been made without the person taking the video, who did not ask michael for anything, and it's definitely smart to be wary as an American tourist - both your safety and your money
When the guide spoke Japanese, it caught me off guard 😂

This has been the experience of the traveling western white dude for the past 60 years.
yeah this guy is pretty cheap throughout his entire videos always penny pinching the locas

I don't agree the guy was trying to scam you, but I wasn't there so I don't really know. But it looked to me like he was hustling as any of us would be in his situation. see i am a burmese too but i would have not given anything either because the locals sees him as an easy target to beg just because he is white.

Be careful pushing the kids away. Yes, they will reach into your pockets. It's a universal experience in developing countries.
