Early morning in Cologne, after watching a Karajan documentary on ARTE, I found this jewel! It gave me goose bumps and brought tears to my eyes. What a performance - thank you so much for the upload. Both, Herbert von Karajan and Jessye Norman are very much missed, I am so very grateful to have watched their magic here.

In my opinion this is one of the greatest Wagner performances I have ever heard. HvK became a friend of mine during his final 5 years and, despite all the negative comments written about him, he truly was a remarkable conductor. The VPO are playing for dear life here and the Overture is astonishing. Considering that HvK was in incredible pain and had a bicycle seat attached to the podium so he could actually stay upright is amazing in itself. But these performances..... We won't see anyone like him again. Even diva Jessye gave her finest
