Watching her face at the end of this video, I cried. I had the good fortune to meet her backstage after a recital in San Francisco. She was so lovely, with such a tremendous personality, and I'll never, ever forget how she looked straight at me with those incredible eyes and gracious smile as she spoke to me and signed my program. She was incredible, immense, infinite. I'm a wreck right now... RIP, Jessye.

I can honestly say it was one of the 3 or 4 most thrilling moments in a 40-year career. A video like this can only hint at the enormous power she has at her disposal. She used it enchantingly.
Speaking of the video, I do wish the sound engineers would leave more of the dynamic contrast in. I suppose they remove it so we can listen to this on earbuds or in traffic without damaging our hearing, but so much of the drama lies in that contrast. Sigh.

This same excerpt can be seen on RUclips in a presentation by this magnificent singer Jessie Norman under the conduct of Karajan. It's not her own and unique thing. But I love her in it, her meticulousness towards text - both musical and verbal, the way she squeezes it all from each and every vowel, each and every note, with the utmost ejoyment and love towards the author's music, and her exceptional ability to recreate it. Jessie Norman is a unique eperience to encounter. The last diva. The last huge musician on opera stage.

Mit "Isoldes Liebestod" hat der geniale Wagner es geschafft, einen Orgasmus bis hin zum Klimax in Noten zu fassen! JN hervorragend! 2:13

I always thought she was truly great when singing in german. Her best works (allthough all are great) are her interpretations of Wagner und Schubert in my opinion. There was something in her presence, her soul that perfectly captured the essence of german poems, ballads and songs.

Her frequent performances as Sieglinde feel underrated. I cannot think of anyone I'd rather hear sing it.

Only Jessye Norman could make me love anything by Wagner….she is literally the only singer that has made it bearable. She was a towering talent-and I am not talking about her physical stature-with a superlative voice given to her by God which she used so wisely, intelligently, so musically that it jumps off the screen, LP, or CD.

She is phenomenal, but your comment seems strangely motivated.Beautifull music is not meant to be a burden, sorry you find it so traumatic when it is sung by others.Maybe you could show the other great singers how they can be more bearable.Somehow I am sure Jessye Norman would appreciate other performances with such god given beauty as her own.Genius like Jessye always has that class.

The most perfect climax in opera ever. Everything is there. Love , sensuality. Where souls and bodies juste become one in a total fusion. Some women fainted during the execution of this liebestod at the creation. Guess why ? Listen.
