ah.....they are all astounded by his guidance....jessye looks like she wants to cry at moments...it's amazing to me that i'm sure everyone in this room understood how close karajan was to his end. what they gave back to him was a gift.
Fasicnating at how her large voice can reduce to such a piano and create that kind of sensuality and then all of a suden just relentless against fortes. Wonderful clip!
I agree with you Brother Jim....what a pleasure! I get so tired of anonymous mediocrities boring us with negative and picayune criticism of great artist. It is as if they believe they are elevating themselves by attacking greatness....when all they are actually doing is being a pian in the ass!!!
Why, thank you, brother. Part and parcel of the internet, I guess. You can't watch a video featuring kittens without some racist diatribe about Obama in it. I guess the ignoramuses aren't surfing for opera ;-)
The concert (look the YT vid) is unbelievable, how he shaped the lines with his hands. He was the sorcerer. She was not amused that she should not sing (she prepared her voice before), but he wants to give her an impression about the pianissimo of this orchestra. Unbelievable.
To sit down with the singer is a very special gesture, especially for a titan to do so. I’m sure she enjoyed his hand-ballet too! It’s really an orchestral piece. Having her not sing at first session is just fine. It’s good she knows his priorities intimately, and how much effort his band is putting in for her. ie. 8 minutes of almost aurally invisible tremolo! Worth it!
It takes a huge amount of talent to render such a complex masterpiece feasible to the orchestra and artistically convincing. His vision of the work and his sensibility to detail is only matched by his capacity to convey his ideas to the players to the extent that his rehearsing seems almost an easy thing.
We are so lucky to be witnessing the hard work involved before a finished performance. Karajan demands perfection and gets it. And I don't see a trace of anyone being afraid of him either. What an amazingly dedicated group these people are. Thank you so much for posting such rare footage.
...a performance that grabs the human heart as we watch it, knowing this is Karajan's last performance, knowing that he still had so much to offer life, not just music, but wisdom and the delicate touch of a human heart that went through and beyond music, magical, magnificent music. . . . Thanks, Herbie, thanks for all of it that you gave us-and thanks to Eliette for being the right person for him, at the right time, in the right and patient way for this to happen for us all!
In the 'Ultimo Concerto' and this one you can see that v. Karajan has found his Diva Ultima for this area in La Norman by his comments to the orch to "support the vocalist" only and by the ecstacy in his eyes as he sings along with her...
I am not a Karajan fan, but his rehearsals have completely changed me. He really knew what he wanted to hear. He really knew the orchestra and sound and what the composer meant. I am amazed by him. And please people, get over the better and best thing. It is old, you are allowed to enjoy it all. Why does every video degrade to a better best argument? The video is sublime, get over it.
You may not be a Karajan fan, but I consider myself a Karajan 🥜 nut, and have for decades. And you are absolutely right, he knew exactly the sound he wanted, and he didn't care what he put performers through to get it. Results: His recordings are immortal. I have read books and seen documentaries on Herbert von Karajan, and I don't believe he was a Nazi. He joined because of his career. In a BBC documentary, The Nazis: A Warning from History, a Jewish German Communist said in a interview, that he and his friends thought when Hitler first to power in 1933: "It can't be all bad. Some of the Stormtroopers have Jewish girlfriends. He can't hate all of us." Well, everybody has 20/20 hindsight. Film director Sergei Eisenstein was one of the greats, and at least used to have his films taught in every serious film class. Yet he fervently believed in the Russian Soviet takeover. Does that make his films bad?
you prolly dont care at all but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the login password. I would love any assistance you can give me!
@Angel Dominik Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out now. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
I will say it: Jessye forever!!!! Herbert V K forever!!!! This is a great footage, I love it! There will never be anyone like these two true artists!!!! Thank you for this posting!
Thank you so very much for posting this gem! I had heard several verbal accounts of this rehearsal and am overjoyed about the chance to actually experience it!
Zthank you sooo much. Videos usually show the diva ms Norman. Here we see a humble ( but incredible) voice at the service of an orchestral giant. Not sure ai ill get to sleep. Its 24.17 here in Valencia Spain
It says, "Please comment!" What is there to say? That this is the stuff dreams are made on? But then there will be people to give me hell for quoting good ol' Will. And yet that's what it is. We must be grateful and reverent, for the stuff dreams are made on doesn't come our way very often or easily. This kind of stuff anyway, I should say once every century.
"I fear the opera will be banned - unless the whole thing is parodied in a bad performance - only mediocre performances can save me! Perfectly good ones will be bound to drive people mad, - I cannot imagine it otherwise." Richard Wagner to Mathilde Wesendonck
Usually the best ones but it also depends on the repertoire and worldwide venues they sing in. Most major opera houses will have a translator or others on their staff that can assist.
@michaels7 -Besides the above names you can add Ponselle,Caballe,Nillson,Flagstad, and a host of others that were better. Music being subjective-I too should not be so opininated
Ms Norman interprets Wagner's Liebestod aria with enormous intelligence and intensity. A genius of American sopranos!
I am not a Wagner fan, but I am a great Norman and von Karajan fan. The quality of the music they produced together is astonishing. RIP.
Just amazing, Karajan was supreme and Jessye was divine.

She sounds just as good during the rehearsal as she does during the actual performance.
Hey a sensible youtube discussion. What a rare and exceptional treat! Just passin' through checking out Jessye's amazing voice.

Jessye Norman shows this conductor her brilliance in this role.
My God that final chord in the orchestra...like the voice of God...
Vocal Virtuoso, Jessye Norman!
Norman is a goddess! Tremendous power
Sheer magic- what great artists- particularly for this repertoire- ( Norman ; Von Karajan )

Every time I listen to this rendition, it makes me cry... especially knowing that now they both passed away...
So beautifully said! Thank you very much! Miss him terribly...
It wasn't his last performance, video is from 1987....
for me this is inspiration, great virtosity, simply art at the highest level.

Oh man! This woman can sing! My God!
This is gold. Thanks for posting.
What a privilege to see this!!! Thanks!!!
This is so nice to see. Thanks for posting. I love all the behind the scenes stuff
Her vocalizing is great art as much as her Liebestod. Karajan is like the Moses of Wagner and lieder.
I love hearing great singers warm up!
simple perfection ...
Thank you for posting this - really amazing to watch genius at work.
There are rehearsals on the DVD bonus segment of this opera -- one of my fav's too!
OMG ... i am deeply impressed ...

This video is very precious. Thanks for uploading!!!!!!!!
Un monumento de mujer!!
Thank you for uploading this
Her voice was made for this aria. Or rather, this aria was made for her voice.
Exactly right. That old racist crow Wagner would be turning in his grave. 😂 God had the last laugh.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Maravilloso,ella es perfecta.

She will always be the best. THE QUEEN.
A genious! He was a GENIOUS!!! She was totally mesmerized by him!
how about "genius"
@@kable321 Karajan was a genious of music!
The word is GENIUS, not GENIOUS
@@kable321 Sorry! My phone is not set for English language ☺️
fantastico
"nur die Flöte ... nur die Flöte" ...the man was a genius
bravaLiz Absolut richtig ! :-)
ich habe keine Worte!
A lovely person ❤❤❤ RIP ❤️🔥
Divino
Dem Wagner einer Fünfer in Instrumentation. Ist ja ein starkes Stück... 😉
Thanks for video!! can I found full video of this great interpretation?
Rehearsal was too short ❤
Herrlich!
I don't know what Alain Marion is doing in Vienna! I just discovered he played with Norman in chamber music! Le monde est petit!
@AnnaInVA Unglaublich ...genie!
❤❤❤
Luckily the sound is amazing. But the video looks like the first film in the history of mankind.
Unglaublich!
Greatest black woman of all times....
Singing at 10:00 a.m. is annoying enough, let alone the Liebestod. A lot to ask of a singer!
Inhave Always loved Lenny 🎉😂😅🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
What year was this rehearsal filmed?
1988 I think
Wann war diese Probe? Welche Jahr?

Are most opera singers multilingual?.

METAPHYSISCH!
..'we play and you do not sing' Lol
how to say at fluently english
Some of these people are speaking italian?

I don't sorry... but I wish i'd seen that as well!
If Rumpwrestler thought Karajan was a charlatan why did he go and see him so many times? Can't have it both ways
@michaels7 -Besides the above names you can add Ponselle,Caballe,Nillson,Flagstad, and a host of others that were better. Music being subjective-I too should not be so opininated
Ponselle never performed the Liebestod
He should not be referred to as “Karajan,” but rather “von Karajan”
actually, added the "von" to his famil name
How dare we know God…….! Wow
She was so tall! What's happening?! Osteoporosis?! 🤔
Felipe Vianna she's probably 5'7 and was in3-4 inch heels
These days she wears flats mostly
Looking around she was almost 6’2”
Yes, that’s what happened. She never lost her height though.
She looks bored and irritated.
