I watched your video five times, but could not get repeater list to load onto my ID5100. I was using a Windows 10 PC. Then I tried my Windows 8 computer and the list loaded first time. Thanks for your very instructive videos on the ID5100. Keep ‘me coming.
Nice job on these 5100 videos ! I take delivery of my 5100 on Wednesday, and I feel that I've already read some important sections of the owners manual :)
I just received my 5100 today and am getting it mounted and all setup. I got tired of their not being any D-Star repeaters in Hawaii, even though RepeaterBook and the Icom repeater list says there are repeaters here, so I just installed Hawaii's first publicly accessible D-Star repeater at my house this week. The new Hawaii repeater is running under our new club callsign WH6GRI B. Now to figure out how it all works, lol.
Thanks for the tutorial....worked great for the digital mode but I wasn't finding Near Repeater for FM mode... Since I'm on a boat moving around from state to state I found that I needed to put in the zip code for my current location, one other thing I did was take the FM percentage "during D-Star Info" downloads from 20 percent to 50 percent... (not sure if that helped) but to my satisfaction the FM repeaters in my area showed up....I guess I was assuming that all the FM repeaters would download for the entire U.S... Still learning... and thanks again....Mike
the reason i was trying this, is because I received my Tech license TODAY, and I have been fooling around with this thing, ALL DAY, and not been able to get a single response, so i was trying to figure out how to program the dang thing cause obviously i did something wrong, just a little bit frustrating, i have been listening to folks coming across this radio for about 6 weeks, did not have my license, so i have been waiting and waiting and waiting to get a chance to get my first contact and nothing allllll dayyyy !LOL, Well , i guess ill start all over tomorrow, and try again. Thanks for your videos, and all your help KD9GRP 73s
Okay - don't confuse program will updating the frequency list on the SD card - those are two different things. Once you update the repeater list then you should be good to go. Sounds like you are have issues with updating the card's information. Do you have a local Amateur radio club? Perhaps you can get someone there to assist with getting the card updated? It's have to do this here via RUclips comments without seeing your PC screen.
I'm looking into getting my ametuer radio license and this particular radio looks very appealing. There's just one question though, I've seen videos where people have mobile hotspots for this "D-STAR" function of this radio, is a hotspot necessary?
I have to say, the apparent ease with which you do all the things you do with that radio and the digital information is just astonishing to me. I recall having to run cables and manually enter so much data when working with similar gadgets when working in the wireless field back at the turn of the century. Progress is amazing. A question; Is the heads up display limited to the black on white, or is there a color version available? Also, can you adjust the brightness and contrast for different light levels? I'm looking forward to more on this subject. Thanks for sharing.
yeah man im just wondering, on my 5100 if one person is talking on one side , and the second side both at the same time. I thought it was supposed to mute the sub and allow the main side to be heard, not both at the same time. I have only one speaker hooked up, do i need a second speaker ....one for each side , or is this a problem with my unit???
+Commsprepper yes there is , but my question is , are both sides.... one freq on left I can hear people talking at same time I can hear the people talking on the other side at same time .....both main and sub , at same exact time , I thought u said that one would mute when one n became active with talk... people verbally communicating. I'm just trying to see if my unit is malfunctioning by both the main side and sub side both simultaneously broadcasting , so I have to turn the volume down on one side to hear the other, it never mutes one side or the other
ok, i just really liked yours so... i bought one lol. but im taking the exam on the 17th here at a local ham fest, so i have been just listening , but thought it odd that both frequencies were audible at the same exact time, .... kind of talking over eachother , so i was thinking there might be a problem, or if i am suppose to keep one side volume all the way down and just listen and wait for the other side to start, i know im not making any sense, , very sorry to bother u with this, thanks anyway.
I have you found any real activity or involvement on D star? I currently have the Jesu 400 with fusion and find little activity, need, usage. I will be buying a second duel bander and it will be an icom however not sure if it's worth going with D star. I am also adding a fee HF Cineplex mobile repeater and my van within the next few weeks. What is your opinion on D star so far? Great videos keep them coming
SD card and programming software are no linked. This said, I am happy with the Icom software. I have not had any problems importing the repeater list updates.
Great video! Really mulling buying an ID-5100a. Seems like a solid all-arounder for the price. The location-based repeater functionality is really fantastic. Have you found that most of the repeaters in the areas you travel have gps coordinates in the data so they're identified by location?
+Commsprepper Great to hear. Do you find that the FM repeaters in your area are well-represented with gps coordinates as well? If not, I assume you can manually update the repeater details with coordinates in the software?
acrobat , will not open this, now yes im computer illiterate , am i doing something wrong , or do i need something other than acrobat? i dont get a save option, at the bottom of page where the download is, it just says "open" "always open files like this" "show in folder" ???????
Mine already came with the most current firmware, when i go to download the icf file off icom, it is saves in a version older than 1.20, I think it is 1.05-1.10.....
Thank you so much for the video, I ordered this radio this evening, looking forward to getting int installed. What size SD card do I need to buy for this radio. I am so new to this so thanks for any help, just got my call sign this past week. :) KI5ARH 73 sir.
I had a spare 32gb micro with an adapter to make it the full size SD card laying around. I wanted to be able to use the adapter so that if I had to, I could pop it out and stick it into my phone and transfer files. Worked perfectly!
great video; quick and to the point, no bs, no irritating loud music or robo voice.
+Antonio Magillicutti thank you

It's a great radio. You will like it.
Awesome videos! I am considering the purchase of the 5100a Deluxe. I'm here in Va also. Thanks for sharing these videos! 73-DE K4SFC
I just got the bluetooth module installed and the radio set up in my car. This is exciting!
Going to purchase an Icom 5100A, thanks for the helpful tutorial.
Glad it has helped.

Very well explained.!!

Well you probably saved me money but you also saved me a lot of time with the two videos! Thanks, and well done!
Thank you. I am glad the videos have helped!
very good. i didn't realize how simple it is.
I'm looking into getting my ametuer radio license and this particular radio looks very appealing. There's just one question though, I've seen videos where people have mobile hotspots for this "D-STAR" function of this radio, is a hotspot necessary?
+Dat Boi no. But if you live in an area where there are no D-STAR repeaters the hotspots can get you into the system via the Internet.
I have to say, the apparent ease with which you do all the things you do with that radio and the digital information is just astonishing to me. I recall having to run cables and manually enter so much data when working with similar gadgets when working in the wireless field back at the turn of the century. Progress is amazing.

+TheRealWorldPrepper It's LCD only but you can adjust the contrast and back-light level. It also has a time config section for day/night.
Great film well done... Regards from the UK.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Hank

I don't have a manual in front of me but I believe there is a second speaker jack on the unit for the dual-watch function.
+Commsprepper yes there is , but my question is , are both sides.... one freq on left I can hear people talking at same time I can hear the people talking on the other side at same time .....both main and sub , at same exact time , I thought u said that one would mute when one n became active with talk... people verbally communicating. Im not sure now. I will have to test my unit.

Okay... hearing both frequencies is correct. If you only want to hear one at a time, press and hold the A or B and the other will be disabled.

+buzzsah There is plenty of D-STAR activity in my area. I would recommend checking out dstarinfo.com first to see what is in your area.
When you showed updating the repeater list for the 5100a, were you updating the Icom list or the RTS program ? Ted KH6FE
I think you are asking about updating the repeater list on the SD card, which is uploaded to the radio. I am not sure what the RTS software is?
what dose the A B C by the repeater frequincies mean?
VFOs
What capacity card is being used for these data transfers and storage?
I had to run out to the truck. I am not sure what the min or max is but I have a 32G card and it seems to work fine.
Thank you for the video!
My pleasure!
Since you use a SD card, do you use Icom's CS-5100 programming software? If so do you have any problems importing CSV files?
SD card and programming software are no linked. This said, I am happy with the Icom software. I have not had any problems importing the repeater list updates.
thanks for the video it wasn't completely clear which directory to save the csv file on the sd card please could you clarify, cheers
Sure - 5100 - Csv - RepList
+Commsprepper thanks
how do you get out of full scrren mode
Nice video, very straight forward
Great video! Really mulling buying an ID-5100a. Seems like a solid all-arounder for the price. The location-based repeater functionality is really fantastic.
Have you found that most of the repeaters in the areas you travel have gps coordinates in the data so they're identified by location?
All the D-STAR repeater in list have gps location. It's a great radio and system.
+Commsprepper Great to hear. Do you find that the FM repeaters in your area are well-represented with gps coordinates as well? If not, I assume you can manually update the repeater details with coordinates in the software?
+K5PO Andy Not sure. I have not messed with the FM repeaters. What I can say is the repeaters in my area do show up in the list.
+Commsprepper good deal. Thanks. 73
acrobat , will not open this, now yes im computer illiterate , am i doing something wrong , or do i need something other than acrobat? i dont get a save option, at the bottom of page where the download is, it just says "open" "always open files like this" "show in folder" ???????
This is not/not an Acrobat file. Try not to open the file and look for it in the download folder after you download it.
+Commsprepper ok , I found it , but still says will not open CSV. file, that is why I ask what do I use to open it , ty
+Hammer USN I have Windows 10 if that matters
No. Get help saving the file to a location that you can find. Do not try to open it with windows programs.
or a REALLY BIG HAMMER, and then I know I can fix it!
Woodbridge va here! Thanks for the info!
Hank - have you had a issue where you go to load the setting in ICF format, you get a error message when importing to the radio?
No but I have only done the upgrade once. Suggest trying again with a fresh format (performed with the radio) and downloading a clean firmware file.
Mine already came with the most current firmware, when i go to download the icf file off icom, it is saves in a version older than 1.20, I think it is 1.05-1.10.....
Then I think you are good to go. You may want to call Icom tech support and check. Firmware is sensitive thing - you want to be sure and I'm not.
Thanks Hank - I sent a email to them already. I enjoy your videos!

73 sir.
card does not need to be big or fast. I think mine is an older 256M.
I had a spare 32gb micro with an adapter to make it the full size SD card laying around. I wanted to be able to use the adapter so that if I had to, I could pop it out and stick it into my phone and transfer files. Worked perfectly!
Well done, great information.
Thank you.
Thank you
You're welcome
thx for the video.
The repeater list is still very out of date in case you haven’t used it lately.
do you use winra to open the files
No. I don't know what that is.
thanks so much..you help me so much. now the rest is falling in to place. I hope to talk to you on dstar soon. k0pjh
I listen on reflector 62C to and from work. Hank
VERY helpful... I tried following another video and got lost. 73 de Andy K3UK
+Andrew O'Brien Thank you. I'm glad it helped.
that is amazing!
+Jarhead6 The near repeater GPS feature is very cool! You can also go into the file and add additional repeaters with the excel spreadsheet.
Commsprepper I am trying to learn as much as I can about ham radios. There is a lot of info, I appreciate your videos.
thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
that model gets a bit of a panning re reliability on eham
still working fine for me.
You should detail exactly where the file is to be placed.
I think I have a video on that.
Very good video.
Thank you.
