I found a guy selling a turtle on the side of the road I had no experience thank you turtle girl you have made my life much easier also you have me Saleem much happier
Thank you hun, I've had my baby red ear sliders for 2 weeks now. Thank you for the list, I will be purchasing this stuff. I'm more of a DIY kind of guy, I made a DIY submerged filter, and a DIY vacuum. You're so turtley rad. 🐢
That turkey baster thing you were talking about I never new! I got one with a set up and I had no clue what it was and nothing was in the description but now I know thanks
Just stumbled upon your channel.I've been going crazy doing research lately. My Aunt gave me a turtle about 2 months ago that her friend abandoned.I got this turtle for FREE, but now have spent a good $500 on her.I assume she's Female, short tail & short claws, named her Malina [Red Eared Slider].She was kept in a 10 gallon tank with NO WATER or any type of decorations it was so sad.Now I have her in a 55 Gallon tank & slowly but surely putting together her habitat.I appreciate your channel, thank you!I did subscribe too.Keep doing what you're doing!Only thing I'm having trouble with is the water turning yellow & smelling VERY BAD.It's only been the 2nd day with the 55 gallon tank & it seems to be cloudy already.I feed her twice a day, but she's ALWAYS hungry.Constantly searching for scraps.I will need another filter, got one filter but now I realize I need 2.I plan on grabbing some Ghost shrimp today & Cory Catfish to help.& some Hornwort.Never knew how expensive a turtle could be, But I love her & my Family enjoys watching her now that we're all stuck home.Anyway, thanks again for what you do! -Kimberly
Hi, I am a new musk turtle owner. I think your videos are very informative and easy to follow - thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience. Quick question: when you are changing the water or adding new water - what temperature is it? How do you make sure that when you add the new water you want affect much the temperature or perhaps it is OK for the water to be coller for some time after the change?
I kind of just feel it with my hand and make sure it doesn't feel too hot or too cold, basically just room temp water. It's usually only a small amount so it doesn't need to be exact ;)
I have a question. We are planning to get a baby yellow belly slider turtle or whatever but in the back I see your turtle in the back in only water. Do all turtles have to stay in just water cause I need to know what to do with my slider.
1.A tank 2. Water 3. Food 4. The turtle 5. The owner 6. Electricity 7. Basking and heat light 8. Life in the turtle 9. Life in the owner 10. Oxygen I did ten, what's good 🤣
Thanks for the video. My turtles are sooo mean lol. I got them when they were older and I guess not socialized. I’ve use the toothbrush method to clean shell and it works great. Thank you for the other advice will be buying all that soon.
Great tips never thought about the turkey baster, totally thinking 🤔 outside the box... you ever thought about making a basking area with the egg crate design...it really works great for my turtles 🐢
yes! egg crate basking areas are great! I usually just tend to the lower effort side of things though and drilling holes in a plastic bin seems easier than zip tying a bunch of egg crate together lol
I have a question regarding lighting. Currently I don't have other lights than the basking lights, which I turn off at night. Does it have to be completely dark, or can I have regular lights on? The tank is in the living room.
Completely dark is definitely more ideal, but if you're using the lights in the living room, then have them on and then turn them off when you leave the room. :)
I bought my turtle named John 6 years ago when he was the size of a penny he didint receive proper care for 4 months then I got him a big tank and a basking area and a Uvb light and had to fix a small she'll rott he is 6 years old now very healthy I didint have some of the stuff in this vid tho but ye
The only problem I have are protein levels in the water I started giving them chicken which they devoured like piranhas in the very beginning, and I didn't know how much protein they were getting until I hooked up my DIY air filter and saw all the foam at the top of the tank. I wish there was an easy way to solve this I'm going to cut down on their food but they are still babies. I don't feed them and their main tank, they just pooped tons of protein LOL, any advice would be much appreciated, thanks Turtle girl
maybe look into a DIY protein skimmer or water polisher might help? Or more surface agitation? Here's something quick that you might try ruclips.net/video/bRiCkJsN618/видео.html
This is good to know, I have a toothbrush, just for the turtle I should brush it’s shell, I want to get another dock, so it could stand on, I like that your turtle tank water is high, I cannot do that now because he need a stronger dock to hold itself.
Hi @The Turtle Girl , I have a quick question, my baby red ear sliders have somewhat of a razor edge on their top of their shell spine is this normal or, should it be completely flat thanks in advance. 🐢❤️
Will..everytime I get heater for my turtle tank it always explode for some reason even if it's completely under the water, I don't know what I am going wrong, I would love to know u r opinion about this.
I got my turtle a new tank and this is her first time in a basking area she moves her feet and hands and head back and forth fast most of the time is this normal? (She's a red ear slider)
@@TheTurtleGirl She stopped doing it But before she just moved her feet back and forth like she was swimming. She used to do it on her basking area under her light bulb but she's ok now but thanks for replying either way.
My baby turtle is starting to shed and it’s not really eating and he’s just basking all day do you shedding might be the reason for that please help I’m worried 😦
Hey I got a new turtle and she is named Cleo she is a baby Mississippi map turtle and she’s not eating I have a uvb and heat lamp I keep the tank at 78 during the day and it goes down to 76 at night but idk what’s wrong can you help
Ajani Sams sometimes baby turtles won’t eat, try soaking some pellets in tuna water then feed it in a separate container, leave it for 15 minutes, if that doesn’t work the feed it an earthworm
My little sister needs to watch this video...but it's me who is now taking care of her turtle :D thank you for sharing, awesome video, subscribed for more :)
It's not fair to make an animal that doesn't know any better survive off of the same diet as you. Some turtles are more herbivorous than others and I believe tortoises are completely herbivorous, but if you want a pet that's a veggie eater, then that's research you'll have to do to make sure that's natural to how they survive in the wild.
Cleaning turtle is no problem cause I have a wave maker, they sit on front of it(better swimmer than me) and remove the waste or even changed skin that is stuck so if I pot sand I need to remove wavemaker? Or my filter...... XD
it's not a must! you could do bare bottom (no sand or rocks or anything at all) or tile, like in my axolotl tank. As long as the wavemaker doesn't disturb the sand too much it'll be fine. But if it does make the sand move around, then you'll have to get something different because it could ruin your filter.
I have wavemaker normally to move the 💩 from my turtle, as my tank is big(160l) and filter is for like 350l, filter can't move the water enough to move the turtle 💩 and they land on bottom
TURTLE GIRL PLEASE HELP!!! My I've recently watched your substrate video and I decided to get sand to avoid impaction. looks nice but one problem, my turtle keeps eating the sand two days in a row now, I am worried he might get impacted please help. (p.s. the turtle is a male red eared slider almost full grown)
Is he eating his regular pellets and things too? If he's constantly eating the sand I might switch it out and put tile instead...a little bit of sand isn't a problem but if he's eating a lot.....
The turkey baster is so smart!! I’ve had fish tanks for a long time before I got my turtle so I had some things that are helpful for both tanks but I never thought of the baster hahaha! Perfect for all types of tanks
With your feeding method, would you feed the size of their head in pellets and veggies and live, just pellets and then some veggies and live, or pellets then veggies and live as treats, or what? Just came from a turtle feeding vid and I was confused :/ I really love your channel and I'm getting one or two painteds in a pond/kiddie pool, you have been so helpful 🐢❤️❤️ (And yes I liked my own comment so you might see it sooner lol)
I usually measure only the pellets with the "how much can fit in the head if hollow" method. For live/treats, I usually offer those on "off" days, which are the days I'm not feeding pellets and just give what seems to be a reasonable amount, usually 3-4 snails or a live fish or shrimp. For vegetables like collard greens and romaine lettuce, they really can't have too much and most people have problems with getting them to actually eat them in the first place. So I always try to offer some of those, although my turts rarely eat them lol. (as always make sure the vegetables you're offering are safe...for instance you shouldn't feed spinach because it is high in oxalic acid which binds calcium) does that make sense?
Thought that was a microphone in the thumbnail LOL. Karaoke with your turtle
it's said that singing to them is better for their mental health 😂
_lol_ jk but it might be nice for your own mental health hahahaha
