I know this is a year later, but with turtles, the advice I got as far as pH is its best not to chase pH with turtles. Unless its way too acidic. I have well water (and this is actually odd) but it is pretty alkaline. Usually well water tends to be more acidic.
I apparently need to resist the urge. With my weekly maintenance. I don't do I FULL water change, probably about 50%, but I generally take the turtle and all the decorations out. Reason being I like to scoop/sift the whole of the substrate (sand in this case) (to point out my water is always crystal clear). When I I start sifting out debri though, it often starts to STINK REALLY BAD and cloud up(which is probably more due to the sand I am kicking up) (the water actually smells fine until I start doing this). It makes me WANT to do a full water change and cleaning every time.
I got a slider turtle, and wanted to ask when should my first water change be? And how long for good bacteria to grow in 30 gal. Can't get rid of cloud water after 3 days of changing water
I just subscribed i need a video of nitrogen cycle info from you, other ppl put videos about it but coming from the turtle girl would benefit my turtles n myself . Thanks
I had several problems when kept diamond back in the past, my water parameter always perfect, but my dbt shell always had white spot that really annoyed me, i don't know if those are fungi, mineral deposit or what, my dbt was fresh water raised cb tho, but still got that, what do u think? Some said even the fresh water converted dbt still need some amount of salt in the water...
yes please have a video on the nitrogen cycle. I recently moved and had to redo my turtle tank and it's super cloudy and gross looking, so I just want to make sure my turtle is safe in there or if I can do anything to help speed up the process.
I haven't stepped up to turtles yet, but my 30 tall betta tank gets ten gallons changed every other week & that seems to keep the tank in check. This may be a little preemptive & extra as he is the only inhabitant of the tank & I am not testing the water at all, however, this schedule keeps me on my game for the time being. I will be investing in a test kit before adding any tankmates to this system though...
Hi turtle girl, I have a bridge pipe. My first tank I have two adult repeated sliders. The second tank for baby Flyriver. My question is, how often do I have to change the water? Second question: Is it okay to mixed the water with adult turtles to baby flyriver?
Hey Turtle Girl! I have 2 red eared sliders, one is about 13 years old, and the other is about 4. The older one has LAYERS and LAYERS of stuck shed on his shell, because the previous owner didn't give him a proper diet, lighting, or overall care. Is it ok to clean off the stuck shed with a toothbrush? And how do you suggest that I adjust him to a healthier diet?
I would scrub with toothbrush. I recommend a mix of turtle pellets, food sticks and wheat germ pellets. Wheat germ helps with shed and will DEFINITELY help with it.
Biohome filter media keeps my ammonia at 0.25ppm nitrite and nitrate at 0. The anerobic bacteria takes a long time to become effective but it's possible and effective. I use about 6 pounds of it in a sump, which may be overkill but now I have to do far less water changes than I used to.
good video. there is one answer though, its to use a water test kit so you know what your aquarium parameters are, so you know when and how much water to change
Hi Turtle Girl! I want to move my turtles into a larger tank but I'm not sure how to get the nitrogen cycle started...could you give me some tips on how to create the best water environment for my turtles?
Thank you for that informative video. I would like to SEE how you do it. I have a yellow belly slider. He is so dirty (creates a LOT of wast) if I had any kind of pretty sand or rocks it would (and has been) nasty to clean. So I gave up on anything on the bottom of the tank. Maybe musk turtles are not as dirty. If I had white sand, after I cleaned it, it would be mud color. Why am I asking about my slider if you are talking about musks? I think I am going to have to re- home my slider.☹️ He is to big for his 55 gal tank (10 gal per inch) and my husband won’t let me upgrade. So I am looking into musks, because they will do well in a 55 gal tank. I know to use the vacuum to get all the debris out, but will it get enough to get it all clean? Sorry so long but I want to know all I can before I get my muskies. ( And re-home my sweet slider😭)
I also have a yellow-bellied slider. She is a biggg girl & so much work. I have had her for 14 years but she so worth it. I hope that you’re able to keep your slider some how 💔
Ashley Rivera hi, I have an 8” 3year old yellow belly slider and I have her in a 75 gallon aquarium that she has outgrown. She seems happy though! I was wondering how big your 14 year old turtle is and what size tank do you have her in? I’m wondering if I should go ahead and upgrade her tank, but I’m not sure how fast she is going to grow. I’m doing water changes every two weeks and cleaning my FLUVAL FX4 filter every 4 weeks because of the water quality.
A video about the nitrogen cycle when be very nice. Been thinking about getting a turtle and want to know how to take care of it to the best of my ability.
Hey turtle girl! I changed my water a few days ago and it was clear and it’s already foggy and dirty looking! Do you know why that is? I have two baby slider turtles
I don't suggest putting two turtles together in the first place. Also make sure your filter is good enough to handle the size of the tank and maybe even get a filter that is meant for a bigger size tank just to make sure it's getting the right amount of filtration.
Hi there. I am taking care of my friend's turtle while they are on vacation. Is it bad to change the water constantly? My friend said every week but the water smells so bad that I change it every 2 or 3 days. Is that bad? They don't have a filter. Also, I am noticing the turtle is not basking.... Maybe he's still scared or maybe the basking area is not good. I've been taking him out in the shade in our backyard in a kiddy pool supervised. Is it bad to change their water that often?
Yeah, if they don't have a filter, I'd give them fresh daily...if possible, get them a filter or advocate to your friends to get them a filter. Having turtles long term without a filter is just not a good way to go.
I have a question! Weekly half of the water in my tank evaporates lately (I don’t have a lot of water in my tank like her, plus it’s extremely hot) Should I still change my water or is the evaporating and me weekly putting new water in it enough?
Only water evaporates but nitrates and ammonia do not. So all the evaporation is doing is getting rid of water. Therefore, it is still necessary to remove some of the water and adding new water for every water change in order to remove nitrates and ammonia. I would suggest a water testing kit to make sure after every water change that you are at the right level of nitrates and ammonia (:
I have 2 inch turtles and they are living in a 2 feet tank, I haven't kept filter , so how often shall I change the water and by how much? Shall I keep them 24 hours in water, I have a uv light and dry area too
Hi what about cleaning the whole tank out? I looked it up and it says that I should clean out the whole tank every 2 to 3 weeks and doing water changes every week. I don’t believe you have said that you clean out your whole tank. Should I do that? Please lmk!
Wouldn't recommend doing 100% water changes/cleaning out the entire tank - not only is it way more work, it's also not as efficient. Let beneficial bacteria and the nitrogen cycle do the work and do small (30-50%) water changes on a regular basis :)
we just bought a new aquarium and we now have a realy cloudy water( white ish) we have a 55 us galon tank whit 2 red eared slider turtle and a fluval 407 filter. since the start we had huge trouble to get great water clarity can you help us please?
what about the settled debris on the rocks? after about a week the rocks in the bottom of my tank turn black, is that from his poop? am i just supposed to leave that there?
I don't know anything about treatment for fungus but turtles can be out of the water for around 2 to 3 days but I only suggest about one day at a time.
I have a pleco in my tank to help clean the algae in my tank but the pleco poops a lot in clogs up my filter and I have to clean it a lot more often is there anything I can do to help this?
Hii, I am searching for a good tank but I live in Holland and i cant find so many options. But I saw one from zoo med 40 gallon tank. Is this brand good? Love r videos btw💕💕
I have an African sideneck turtle that I rescued and so far the only thing I've been able to get him to eat are the red dried shrimp. He is about 5 1/2 in across and I am not sure his exact age and I am wondering if previous owners or the pet store that was fostering him only fed him one type of food and how long will it take and what are some tips to get him to eat something different. I put twelve small minnows in his tank 2 weeks ago and he never seems to go after them and he has yet to eat a single one. He is shedding and the little minnows will even come right up to his head and nip at the skin dangling from his neck and he still does not go for them. I am starting to get very concerned that he is not getting any Variety in his diet. I love my little Cletus and worry about him everyday so anyone that has any suggestions especially Turtle girl please help. Thanks for anyone that took the time to read this and respond and Cletus thanks you as well!
Dominick King if it’s a hatchling , try feeding it everyday if it doesn’t eat then wait until the next day until it does eat. It’s most likely scared or getting used of everything so the baby is just adjusting. It’s normal for it not to eat. Mine took about 3 days to finally settle down and eat

Hey so what is there’s physical poop sludge on everything in the tank? Should I get a better filter?
Actually is it smeared, liquid or solid.
Yessss nitrogen cycle video pleaseee
I have 2 yellow belly sliders, I do 30% water changes weekly. I’d know when to change it mostly since the tank will grow a smell. Is that normal?
sine turtles dont breath in water like fish, would it even matter the nitrate levels, etc?
