Thats easy. Rebuild it from the ground up with a proper budget. They are unreliable because $20 and a trip to home depot would net you 50hp. Then you could boost around until you found a bigger turbo for $300 and slapped it on. Make sure you set the boost to 21psi on the new turbo since thats what you were running on the stock one. Then when your maxing out the injectors and overunning the stock BOV (if you haven't switched to a crushed metal BOV) it blows up. Not sure why it died it was only 300hp or so

So I can tell you from experience being a part of the DSM community your gonna see why this car is so underrated. The 4G63 is a great motor which can handle a lot of abuse, and yes DSM are temperamental and that’s due to being beat and abused over time like this poor car has, but luckily it’s on the right hands and being able to make 350whp on the janky set up it’s on its very impressive. With some love and a stand-alone ECU and some E85 you’ll make fast and easy power, and the big plus is that it’s AWD even if the swap is dog shit, it’s gonna hell you big time. I’m super excited to see this girl come to live and rip down the streets. Just be patient w the car and get to know its character, welcome to the DSM community!

This is a good build, a little of the basics of how to make an older/someone’s else’s project work. Even though the body is bad, he definitely got his money’s worth on a built engine that didn’t pop at 33 psi. 6500 for a 33 psi 4g63....

22:58 would be the perfect spot to impose "danger to manifold" on the lap top. 😂😂 The floor's already gone, so you don't even have to worry about that falling out too
As the owner of a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX I can say from personal experience that they are a fucking money pit. But god damn when it is running right it is just insanely fun to drive. DSMlink is really old but it could do self tuning with a wide band, at least close enough to get you drivable but you will need a dyno tune, I went from around 300 whp off the learned tune to around 400 whp and damn near doubled the gas mileage. The sunroof in those cars is known to leak and it gets the floor and back seat well, that gas tank access is factory but there should be a rubber boot over it.
I speak from experience when I say that 90% of DSM owners are hacks, the other 10% build really nice DSM's. Most of them are inexperienced and throw together builds with a big turbo and no supporting mods and no tuning capabilities and wonder why the car pops and breaks up and doesn't make power. Then they discover how to do a boost leak down test and get a base tune map installed and can't believe how much of a different car it is
This reminds me so much of buying a mk1 gti at night and found so much rust that I had no other choice to part it out… the I discovered my salvage business 😂

i bought a 1999 eclipse gs and got really lucky, it was owned by an older guy who was looking to get rid of it so the inside was good, a lil rust but thats basically common on an eclipse now and i got it for 3k so it isnt an awd or turbo'd but i am going to do those things to it eventually and it hasnt broken yet as ive had it for 1 year already
i LOVE the Rx8 ... by far my favorite cheap sport car and the best part 90% of the ppl who bought those didnt know how to maintain them so now they re almost free ...
Drove a ‘95 eagle talon ESI and eventually got a ‘97 talon TSI AWD. That was the first time I had held a crank in my hands and then drove that same engine after rebuilding it. Needless to say I’m very fond of these money pits. (My mom also has an rx8 that I grew up driving when she let me lol)

I’m 2017 before the gsx raised in value I took my cousin to go look at a 98 gsx. It had a beautiful paint job and ran pretty good and and appeared fairly visible. It had a questionable strut tower repair. But looking under the car you were greeted with appeared to be a fresh black undercoating. Well we bought the car for 5k and needed to jack it up. The frame rail disintegrated. We realized the entire underbody was covered and behind repair. Eventually the rear control arm mounting point on the body disintegrated. The car was mechanically totaled. Now it’s my donor for my gst.

Ayyyyeeee welcome to car rebuilding/restoration! Get it stopping, get it running, make your structural mods, then strip it down and fix all rust. Then build the car using new bushings, seals, and consumables where possible. Then you get to spend the next year chasing down gremlins... it's fun!
people just want to see cars that are affordable to them, and the rx8 is not only underappreciated, but cheap because they're so expensive to keep on the road...
Dude, Probably one of the BEST cars you have ever bought for the channel! I have owned over 20 DSM's in my lifetime. It's a love and hate relationship, but with heavy emphasis on "love." GS-T's are fine, I know y'all want a GSX, I've always been happy with my GS-T's... You sure you don't wanna feel insane torque steer in a built 5hundo Horse GS-T? Hahaha. My built GS-T back in Highschool, pulled HARD LEFT and Jerked back to the right. If you weren't prepared, you would certainly eat the shoulder. Gosh, I miss the days when you could buy 2nd Gen Eclipses for under 2-3 grand and was considered, "Good Condition." Have fun guys!
The Eclipse GSX.. A year or 2 before F&F I had a 89 Trans am that had quite a bit of work for the time. Probably had around 350-400 hp at the wheels. It was not slow for the time but I ran into a Eclipse GSX at a stop light. I did not know much about imports at the time. But OMG I Got smoked by that thing. First time I ever heard a Blow off valve on the street. It wasn't even just from a stand still It would even pull at 80+ mph. That really changed me. Also I seen the same car in I think it was Super Street Mag a little while later. It was a local to Pensacola FL and Built by V n T Performance.
Saying a DSM is an unreliable pos is like saying a fox body is unreliable POS. Both have been poorly maintained, driven off a cliff, and the previous owners sucked. If you are a good Wrencher, you can do it. You just bought the worlds best tuning platform. Congrats DSM 4 LIFE
As a former (5x) DSM owner.. 4g63 is a win. (shame its not a pop up 1g) its beyond capable. the drivetrain however... model airplane plastic. - immediately buy the quaife and replace the transfer case with a built one.
I commented on another video, but I still can't believe what he paid for this one. For Comparison 8 Years ago I paid 2.2k for true(OEM) AWD Talon, in similar overall condition, but pretty much spotless rust wise. And nothing done to the top end, but does a built bottom end, a 6 bolt with Wiseco pistons and Eagle rods if memory serves. At that time 6.5k would have gotten you a pretty mint stock car with relatively low mileage, or a cleanly/lightly modded one. Seems they're really starting to go up now that they're getting pretty hard to find, same as any other car, everyone treats them as disposable/expendable till they're not and suddenly asks where they all went...the crusher. Just glad I saw it coming and had the means to get some of the cars I wanted most before they skyrocketed in price. The 90's JDM legends are to the millennials what muscle cars were to the boomers, which is largely why they're shooting up in price, everything else going on in the world lately just makes things that much worse. I just hope the future generations will have access to affordable fun cars worth buying and keep the hobby alive, but I can't think of too many that might fill that role, BRZ is one of the few that comes to mind if they get cheap enough.

You two really went for the most unreliable cars on this one
“Which spring do you want to use for the turbo?”
“Yes” 😂
Lol, exactly
hehe
Gotta admit Ben, i just don't think you're enjoying having a automotive based RUclips channel lately 😂
You didn't pay more than 5 K for this right ?
Ayyyyeeee welcome to car rebuilding/restoration! Get it stopping, get it running, make your structural mods, then strip it down and fix all rust. Then build the car using new bushings, seals, and consumables where possible. Then you get to spend the next year chasing down gremlins... it's fun!
people just want to see cars that are affordable to them, and the rx8 is not only underappreciated, but cheap because they're so expensive to keep on the road...
Does that mean a cross country road trip series 😂😂
Used to have one of these in high school, both door handles broke off, had to climb in through the hatch, was quite embarassing
Now this is something that I can get behind. Love the work and yes... Every northeast DSM is a sunken ship.
Gosh, I miss the days when you could buy 2nd Gen Eclipses for under 2-3 grand and was considered, "Good Condition."
Have fun guys!
Should of put this money into the Camaro lol
This dsm makes me happy to have a rust free 2g
The music change when a black man appears is pretty wild fellas.
Lmao let me check it out lol
Congrats
DSM 4 LIFE
As a former (5x) DSM owner.. 4g63 is a win. (shame its not a pop up 1g)
its beyond capable.
the drivetrain however... model airplane plastic.
Dipstick leaking oil onto header? Who'd have thought the og FNF film was accurate? 😂DANGER TO MANIFOLD
