    LOL yeah you are right about the storage space. It is a BEAST, really would be hard for live shoots or like you say weddings or something like that. but for narrative shoots where you have a little crew, if you have a couple little Sandisk 2TBs, you could just swap them out all day long, have somone dumping the footage for you. But if no crew, then yeah, like you say, it's sweatin' bullets time! LOL, great stuff!

      Justin you really turned my camera search upside down with that FP video. Coming from the BMPCC 4k and 6k, and GH5 it was right up my ally. I have a T5 SSD workflow so high data does not scare me. A hidden treasure that’s for sure.

  • @RoccoGermani

    The great thing about the FP is that if you use one of blackmagic's external recorders like the view assist 5 or 7 inch 12g HDR, you can record blackmagic raw to it. I already have the 5" monitor and am somewhat considering getting an FP and rigging it out with that monitor, as it would be significantly better than what my Canon R6 offers. Thought I'd mention that.

    • @RoccoGermani

      Lol I should have watched the whole video before commenting, didn't realize you mentioned it 😂

    • @Altcine

      I can definitely see the benefits in that if you own an assist already. It's a very good point too because if I already owned one that would also change my buying decisions.
      I honestly do love everything about this camera... seriously couldn't find anything negative to say about it. The CDNG sizes are not limited to this camera so it can't really be considered a bad point....just very inconvenient to have no other options other than to drop colour depth.
      For you...I'd say it would be a good purchase.

    You inspired me to look up the Sigma FP specs on B&H: the latest firmware updates give it external DCI 4K to a BlackMagic 12G Video Assist in BRAW. This may give it exactly what you asked for- albeit requiring the external recorder. It is an amazing little piece of kit… seriously tempting. Thanks for the review. Quite eye-opening at how much detail the Olympus destroys for a “clean” image. Based on that alone I wouldn’t touch the thing, but you’ve definitely peaked my interest about the FP!

    This was a good comparison between the fp and BMP4K. I ended up going with the fp because it fit my particular workflow better (and Sigma was kind enough to lend me one last summer so I could test it out) and I really, really love the small size. It wasn't something I was thinking about, but it's so well balanced that I use it for more handheld/monopod shots than I normally do. In the end, the best camera for you is the one that fits your workflow best.

    • @Altcine

      That's great that it fits your workflow. I think it's great for handheld but still getting the quality of a big cine cam so I fully understand your reasoning.

    I have a question, I believe from what I've heard, the FP can do internal 4K compressed ALL-I & Long GOP recording at 440mbs. If this is true, using ALL-I, for size should be a considerably smaller file size while also still delivering amazing colors, detail, & head room in post as well.

    • @Altcine
      @Altcine  2 года назад +3

      Hi, yes it does. The 8bit test on the stairs was h264 all-i. I think as long as you set the camera correctly then it's fine.

  • @MtZionMediaPro
    @MtZionMediaPro 2 года назад +7

    Absolutely beast of a video! I think from what I've heard, with a 2tb t5ssd you can get an hour of filming. With the way the f p is priced now, you can get two drives, the camera, and a lens with it for less than $2000. Which, depending on your filming needs, having full frame with these options would be killer. Mainly low light filming for set pieces, & high dynamic range. It obviously depends on the person and their workflow.

    • @MtZionMediaPro
      @MtZionMediaPro 2 года назад +1

      Also, having the ability to convert the files to be raw in post is a huge Plus! So even if you don't have the money to buy an external monitor like a ninja 5 or the black magic, you can still compress files for storage and have 4 terabytes to work with on set.

    • @Altcine
      @Altcine  2 года назад +2

      Thank you 😁 although 1hr per tb is dancing on the edge for me it's still a very tempting option but as you said....it comes down to what you shoot.
      I also agree that it's crazy to get such a quality item for so little money. I was wondering if the image was up to scratch but it exceeds my expectations even on these basic tests ...I can only imagine how great it would be on a proper production.
      The truth is, I may still end up with one next week. As a working DP, RUclipsr and casual shooter I think I can get this to work for some things but I'd still have to keep the p4k for longer shoots.
      Thanks for the comment 👍🏾👍🏾

      @MtZionMediaPro 2 года назад +5

      @@Altcine Yes!! The issues that the FP & most expensive Cinema cameras also have the same issues (battery life, storage, rigging, etc). But because the FP punches well above its weight class in terms of price, most "prosumers" aren't used to dealing with these issues so they seem relatively big. However, when you compare the picture quality that you're able to get whenever you make those compromises & rig-out the FP, the image quality & color accuracy you get with the FP is almost comparable with the big guys like Red, Sony, & dare I say Arri! For the price, this is one of the best deals you could ever get! Full-frame as well!
      To reiterate, if you are casual videographer and you do more Vlogging and "run & gun" style media then this camera is definitely not your option. But if you're doing music videos, short films, or even weddings, then this is an EXCELLENT deal if you can rig it out. Rigging & all you'll be at around $2500 for a full frame camera that has RED & Sony like output (it's going for $1,599 for the body & kit lens).

    Uncompressed RAW does not give You advantage in pulling exposure, it give You advantage in denoising and stabilisation.
    I'm using FP L since it launched, it replaced my pocket 4k. This camera does not reqiure as many things dangling from it. Like a battery, speed booster, preamp (FPs is way quieter), cage and so on. Low light capability is also much better on sigma, it can do iso 25600 in less contrasty scenes and do well. You get decent C-AF as a nice bonus when You put it on gimbal (FP L after updates, it used to be bad before).
    1TB drive give You same amount of time as internal battery (~54 min ) plus some extra for having it on while not recording. I swap them in pairs. SSD's got way cheaper than SD cards. Kingstone a2000 1TB work well and are cheap. I use 3d printed SSD enclosure holder.
    Where BMD had it right was 120fps and BRAW was not as demanding to edit.
    Main reason for switch for me was size and build quality, BMPCC4k was HUGE and after attaching bunch of required stuff to it, ended up being just bloated mess of cables. It made it unreliable, bmpcc was not weathersealed, delicate in comparison. But also cheap. So do what You will ;)

    • @Altcine
      @Altcine  2 года назад +1

      OooooK thanks for that. I guess every single photographer and videographer only shoot raw to de-noise and stabilise....you learn something new everyday 😁

    I really appreciate your point of view with this camera. I saw Justin Phillip’s review and wanted to do more research. I, due to my job, have dozens of nvme's laying around and not really any use for them. It was hard trying to choose between the BM4k and this camera. However, since I’m going to start reviving my channel with automotive content, I like how small + light the Sigma is and I do not need to go and buy a large DJI ronin rs3 and can now settle for an dji SC gimbal with a prime lens for rolling shots. Plus, with it being such a small form factor I’m less worried about hanging it outside of a car as well. I think I will pull the trigger on the camera thanks to you! Cheers :)

    as a vfx supervisor of 20 years, i'll say this: the file size is only a fraction of the problem. the true troubles come with everything done downstream- once it's been shot. everything from copying and transcoding proxies (necessary at cDNG bitrates), to vfx, compositing, renders... everything takes 4 times longer. there are good reasons the industry has gravitated towards compression. even with ProResHQ we can deliver much faster turn around on shots. we'd used 2K LOG files for over a decade via proxies, so 4K truly is ample resolution for most needs- even highly compressed, lossless comp schemes have come far in a short few years.

      That is partly the problem 😅 I said at the beginning I'm confused but didn't elaborate. The reason I'm confused is because I want it so badly, the money is just sitting there with FP written all over it lol
      What kind of stuff do you shoot? Sometimes doing multiple takes can take up a lot of room on my current setup and shooting in this would give me anxiety but the temptation is still strong.
      The phone is easy if you have Android. A simple usb capture card with a free app will work on any phone. Try get a 3.0 small capture card from Amazon RRP £13 and you can use it on any camera that has hdmi.
      Honestly, the people who gave it bad reviews is quite perplexing. The image coming out of this was really nice when I inspected it closely, the build quality far surpasses anything else in its original price range and it's very stable.

    Great review; stuff like this always reminds me of the chokehold that RED has on the camera industry and on RAW video compression. A tiny dynamite camera like the FP would be maybe the most revolutionary camera of the last few years if it could have some kind of RAW compression, but because it wasn't made by Blackmagic or RED, it suffers from the absurd file sizes. It's a shame, because it manages to actually deliver on the "pocket" aspect that the BMPCC4K doesn't quite live up to. If anything this has made me hopeful for the future of Sigma's cinema lineup and happy as a BMPCC4K owner.

    Great points! Exactly my thoughts as well. Hopefully in the future they’ll do a firmware update regarding more recording options, especially internally. If they gave as many options/flavors as the bmpcc it would he a no brainer, cause all that storage space required to record is insane lol. I replied to quite a few comments concerning slim raw and it's actually a great piece of software. The problem isn't the storage for editing or saving....it's the recording.
      The recorded data is roughly the same size as ProRes raw and anyone that's tried to do projects in prores raw knows that it eats recording media for breakfast.
      Blackmagic can still record 12bit raw at 4k DCI 60fps to a memory card and with compression at 12:1 you can get decent shoot times.

      Yeah and well beyond 2022 imo. Tbh the only reason I put 2022 in the title is so people know it's new video.... definitely not one of those silly "is it still worth it" stuff 😅
      Tbh I have no idea about the pro. It would make sense for BM to refresh the 4k but only by adding a tilt screen and bigger battery...any thing else would increase the price to much.

      @@Altcine I agree and he freely admits he’s not a film maker, so I take your views seriously. So, I ended up ordering 3 BlackMagic Studio 4K Pro cameras with the MultiDock and Atem Mini Pro ISO for a 4K multi cam workflow - wish it would record 4K but going to resort to pulling the SSDs from each studio cam and putting them into the multidock to edit across 10gb. It hurt the wallet a little so I’ll still film my “cinematic” stuff in my Lumix G9 till I can get either the BM 4K or 6K but I have no full frame lenses :/

      Fx3 is nice but it's really hard to justify certain prices...but if it can bring in the cash then definitely.
      6k is still super35 so crop sensor/apsc lenses will still be fine.

    comparing to p4k is a bit of a unfair comparison as the FP is
    1. full-frame - allowing for greater dynamic range and lower noise levels
    2. a 6k Sensor downsample - reducing noise and allowing for a sharper image than native 4k.
    A fairer comparison would be vs the p6k even though the p6k is using a s35 sensor.

    What do you think the chances of DCI 4K ever being on a firmware update? I want to get this camera so bad due to the color capabilities, but DCI 4K being limited to only BRAW/ProRES external and not DNG I feel like I may as well go the extra mile and shell out the money on the S1H and the Video Assist like I had originally planned, as CinemaDNG alone is not enough to fully sell me.

    • @Altcine
      @Altcine  2 года назад

      Hi Liam, hmmm it's a tough one. They just did the update which is fantastic as the camera has been out for a while now but it's hard to know what their plan is because this is new territory for Sigma.
      They've had some other mirrorless camera's in the past but with the capabilities of the fp and the already demanding codecs...4k dci cdng may just push it over the edge in terms of how it performs.
      If they haven't added a compressed raw I'm not sure about 4k DCI. If I had to put money on it, I'd say no and IF they release a third iteration it may have the options we'd all like to see.
      I also think because the Japanese are more into pics than video they don't see anything lacking with the camera.
