If you have any friends who are Indian, most do not use water they only use milk and they crush their spices rather than use ground spices because the ground spices float around in the drink where as the whole crushed enfuse the milk much better and they are easier to strain out of the drink. Typical spices used are cardamom pods, whole cloves, cinnamon stick, pepper corns and a piece of fresh ginger which you crush with a mortar and pestle. Whole milk is best to use because it makes the drink creamy. Put all the spices in the milk and heat on the stove until boiling point add 1.5t per cup of tea (Red Label is usually the tea used in an Indian household) and sugar into the milk and simmer until the tea is infused and the sugar is dissolved. Strain into a cup or cups and enjoy.

Yess! But we also do half milk + half water, that way the tea isn't too heavy/rich. So we just add water and milk to a pot and then add the spices and loose tea, cook on low for 10-15 minutes. It's also not necessary to use all these spices, I personally only like cardamom so I only add a crushed cardamom pod.

People looking up this video are looking for a typical American coffee house chai latte. It’s a markedly different thing from masala chai, which is what you described. Also, you’re wrong on chai using only milk. Bringing the tea powder and sugar/jaggery to a boil in a quarter cup of water along with freshly ground spices is a typical way of making chai. You can even go half/half. Chai is chai. Let’s not be pretentious about it.

But we indians use water in our chai so basically if u r making 2 cups of chai it's 1 cup water 1 cup milk otherwise it would be too milky

I made this and it is really delicious. Some people are complaining that it’s not easy. It’s about 2 minutes of active work total. It’s boiling water. Literally the easiest thing you can do. Once you have the chai syrup, you can even add it to milk and microwave it if you don’t care for a frothy top. You can also make larger batches of the syrup so you have enough to last a while, and it’s so easy to add some syrup to some milk and microwave it until a it hot.

here’s how to make REAL chai, from an indian. it’s even simpler:
    (for 2 servings)
bring a cup (not the measurement kind of cup, the cup/mug you’ll drink the chai out of) of water to a boil, then put two teaspoons of chai patti (tea leaves) and let it boil for another two minutes or so. it doesn’t have to be a vigourous boil. then add a little less than a cup of milk (or less of you prefer it darker) to the water. let it continue to boil until it starts to rise and turn the heat to the lowest setting before it overflows out of the pot. keep it on the lowest heat setting for another minute or two, adding the desired amount of sugar/honey/sweetener.
you’re welcome! it has enough milk traditionally to be considered a latte, in my opinion

Traditionally masala chai is brewed directly in a milk+water mixture, presumably because the essential oils in the spices are fat-soluble. This will make the mixture less strong, plus it's going to be diluted later with the milk. If you're going for a Starbucks style mild "chai latte" how are all these steps superior to just buying a Tazo concentrate and mixing the way they do?

It's 10x easier to just make normal masala chai that tastes 1000x more delicious by using WHOLE spices, lots of black tea, fresh ginger, black pepper, cloves, ditching the nutmeg and allspice, and brewing in whole or lowfat milk. The milk is extremely important because most of the flavor compounds of the spices are not water soluble, they're fat soluble and milk has fat content.
Chai lattes drink like American filter coffee, limp and watery. Masala chai drinks like Italian espresso, full bodied and intense. It's an apt comparison too because espresso exploits the higher solubility of coffee flavor compounds at the higher temperatures of steam compared to boiling water.

No you're wrong. Chai in English refers to the specific kind of tea, not tea in general. Therefore, saying Chai Tea is completely valid. It's just like saying the Sahara Desert or Timor Leste.

Nellie Pluss Change the tea. Teas in the West tend to be pretty mild. Try getting hold of Indian / Pakistani / srilankan tea bags.
