Decision fatigue is clearly an important factor in this collective mental breakdown that we're experiencing. But, in my opinion, the biggest factor is the overstimulation of our brains, not just decision, but all the incredibly irrelevant information that we're subjected at all times. It's interesting to see this overstimulation in an era that thinks so little.
Yes, but also it felt like my mind woke up from just everyday when I started listening to an interesting podcast each day. I forgot that it can be fun to make the brain work a little. 😅
Or you can also simply have an order in which you wear clothes. Like I wore A yesterday, B today and will wear C tomorrow and then repeat. I myself wear anything that I see first and then move on to procrastinating on other things.

Damn, Matt, this week I was just trying to explain this weird feeling to my therapist, this mental exhaustion that was even stopping me from answering people on WhatsApp! Helpful tip that’s changed my life: putting a sticky note on my desk that says, “NO.” I heard it from someone on an episode of The Daily Stoic podcast. I think it was Robert Greene or Steven Pressfield.
This is so interesting to me. I’ve been struggling with intense intrusive thoughts since about 2016. It’s so mentally draining and I’ve been looking for a solution for years. I’ve been trying low stress scenarios to no avail. It’s really hard to stop focusing so intensely on stupid or made up things. I love this video. I should try this method as I always end up completely exhausted.
I think Matt should write a book. I think the less decisions we make through out the day the happier we can be. I'm 20 years old and I'm happy I found you on RUclips a couple years ago because of you I have become minimalist and I'm much more happy
the fact that i took five major courses this term and started waiting at least 3 working days to reply to most people... definitely decision fatigue at its worst
I’m a single mother of a disabled child, run my own household, and am a small business owner of a few businesses. Because I have to make so many decisions throughout the day that can definitely impact others, I eliminate some of my daily minor decisions. Such as: I eat the same exact thing for breakfast, I take my coffee the same exact way (black), I have the same three things to pick from at work to eat for lunch, I utilize smart devices set on a specific schedule for lights/charging/cleaning, and I often wear what looks like the same exact thing everyday (mostly fitted black monochrome clothing.) Not needing to waste time and energy thinking about minor things like these gives me more energy to focus on other more important things. It’s also very important for me to take a quick 5-7 minute break in playing a dorky Snapchat Bitmoji game to break up the monotony and give myself a laugh-which helps me refocus on tasks at hand. Sometimes, I secretly do a bunch of quick jumping jacks in the bathroom to burn up some physical energy. It’s important to energize yourself with natural-good feelings and laughter every once in awhile. 😂😊
My decision making has gotten worse over the years and I can tell. I find myself taking longer to make the smallest decision or no decision at all. We as a Society definitely needs help.
Before starting the vid I already feel like I needed this. I’ve been feeling weighed down and feel like my mind isn’t in the right headspace. The videos you make are so great and feel like I can disconnect and connect to this when I’m feeling mentally drained.
Honestly I think I have been doing the whole "Decision making avoidance" strat for months now. Especially around December. Thanks for defining it for me to assist me with understanding and identifying it!
Hi Matt, I am one of those people who rarely comment & one of those who rarely laugh about jokes because my brain anticipates most of them and therefore kills the element of surprise.. but I can honestly say that I love your humor! Your jokes are clever, lovingly crafted down to the last detail, and perfectly embedded in the story of the video. So glad you decided to spice up your videos by putting in some of that awesome sense of humor. Greetings & merry christmas from Germany!
What I learned in middle school, prepping your clothes and books the night before will give my mind time to start-up for the day. Not draining mental energy that I'll need for the rest of the day.
Noticed this as well. The more options we have, the less satisfied we are if we let the choices paralyze us. We need to practice more awareness in our decisions - for they shape how we will live short term and long term. The challenge is, we don't know how to be satisfied deeply anymore, or we've been programmed to want it all.
Really cool book - must read in my opinion: Thinking fast and slow (pretty sure lot of you guys might heard of it). Talking 'bout fatigue etc. will be explained using the two systems of thinking (psy.) we have and use. The more our cognitive energy drains over time - like matt explains - the more dificult it actually gets to stop us from making impulsive descisions.
When we’re poor in making decisions we can easily get into people pleasing mode. To help me make better decisions I prioritise my goals for the day and be clear on my goals for the week. That way when people ask for my help, I’m clear on what I can and can’t do and I communicate that clearly. Thanks for today’s video
If removing clothing choices seems daunting to you, start off small. I've started leaving clean socks and t-shirts out for myself in advance of certain days, so I'm out and clothed easier. Obviously if you have some big, corporate event you should be putting more effort into it, but for normal days? You know yourself better than anyone else and what clothes will work for you productively.
i’ve been wearing the same pair of black jeans, one of about twenty white tees and the same boots everyday for years now .. if i post a photo from spain taken two years ago, or a photo from paris last week; i look exactly the same - and matt, i cannot tell you how much this and yourself have helped me just in this aspect alone
That hit me differently. A week ago I noticed that I was taking (no exagerattion) 1-2 HOURS to choose what outfit I would wear in a day. I always took so long choosing that at the end I was so exhausted that I didnt even wanna leave the house anymore LOL. Now what I started doing is putting the first outfit I think of and EVEN if I dont really like it I just go do other things, like brushing my teeth, putting contact lenses, doing my hair, etc. And then when I look back at the mirror I end up realising that I actually like the outfit I'm wearing, or at least I dont give it that much thought: "Ah, its ok. It doesnt really matter". This has been helping me a lot .
Try a capsule wardrobe. It doesn’t really matter the number of items, just make sure everything goes well with everything else. You could also write some outfits on paper, cut them so you get some cards and shuffle them. Every day you take one and whatever is written is what you wear.
This is so me, and to a very critical point that i am getting severe headaches and apathy because of it. Now i understand the correct term for this, thank you matt

This video reminds me of Buridan's Donkey. The donkey is faced with two different bales of hay. The bale's are identical, but the donkey can't decide which one to choose. The Donkey eventually starves to death. This is how most people live their life, they either can't choose, or when they do choose they spend all their time thinking about the other bale. Trust you've made the right choice and keep going, you got this 💙
Wow! I can't believe this video actually encouraged me to go back to the working on the class I'll be providing for my students tomorrow. Thanks a lot! :) .
I've found that with unavoidable decisions building momentum can also be helpful - like not allowing decisions to sit there for ages and build up but instead dealing with them head on when they emerge, then maintaining that momentum as you tackle more throughout the week/month. I make goofy videos about life and the universe and that's one of the topics I've covered - I'd love for you guys to check them out and let me know what you think if you get the chance! 🌟
*Well, ur not prioritizing on the foundation like diet, exercise and sleep* 🙏❤️ Or perhaps ur just doing sth that u hate and u don’t know what ur passion is…yet 😊
Sometimes, I think I've got it all figured. I'm mentally & emotionally more in touch than ever. & then Matt drops a new video & I'm found questioning (in the best way) "why?" in every aspect of my physical life. I've known about decision fatigue, & what it looks like, but I needed THIS video to help me get a handle on it again. Thanks Matt, for the 4th year running.
I realize now why I'm so exahusted everyday, because my position demand me to making decision everyday. This video is gonna change my mindset about making decision. Thanks for the advice matt! 😊

Amazing!! I can see the change ❤️ loving it! 💪
“You just throw both of them in the car and hope for the best” That is right in more aspects in life. This is such a good video and I really enjoyed the cinematography. Really hoping that one day I will be on your level. Thank you 🙏🏼
Matt this is a YT video not a documentary. You have no chill.
The quality of these videos are incredible.
THE DOMAIN ACTUALLY EXISTS props on commitment
Matt which is more better ? a risky business that you love or a stable safe 9 to 5 job that you don’t love.
Decision fatigue is very real! I’m only just pulling through the other side of a decision burnout
*Well, ur not prioritizing on the foundation like diet, exercise and sleep* 🙏❤️
Or perhaps ur just doing sth that u hate and u don’t know what ur passion is…yet 😊
Thai guy needs to make a video about this haha.

Im glad you mentioned nurses. I am a nurse who works 12 hours shifts, and by the end of my shifts my brain is completely done. It is difficult to make decisions towards the end of my shift.
