2004 Suzuki GS500F running problems

  • I bought this bike with bad carbs. I rebuilt the carbs and now it's doing this. I was wondering if anyone else had these same problems. Basically, it starts like a champ, but then it will idle high and die. It sometimes runs a little better on PRI, which omits the vacuum on the carbs and petcock. But then it will do the same thing. I took them off to check and make sure everything was hooked up correctly and it seemed to be.
    This is a stock 2004 GS500F motorcycle.

    So since it keeps getting asked, this motor wasn't worth the rebuild. I ended up buying a low mile motor off another GS500, checked the motor's valves, and lower end once it was shipped to me, took all components off the bad motor and changed them to the new one, put fresh oil and rebuilt carbs on it, got it running and rode it a while, then sold it to upgrade to a 2006 SV1000s with 7k miles on it.

    I took it into the shop and they found metal in the oil. Closer inspection showed that my main bearing was shredded. Hopefully this isn't the case for you all.

    I was hearing a knock at idle so a worn bearing makes a lot of sense

    I had the same thing go wrong it was a spun crank bearing. yours sounds exactly the same spun then burned the crank/ connecting rod got loose and you hear it in the top end.

    I know it wasn't the case with you but these symptoms are very similar to the carbs being out of sync

    I almost did not post my comment since I read your end result, but decided to give my opinion. I was listening to your video with a nice pair of Bose headsets and immediately thought that engine has some serious metal banging going on inside of it.

    I use regular oil to my gs 2004 ...once i used synthetic...it started making all shorts of noises valves etc started knocking ...because synthetic is less thick,cant protect the old and worn motorcycle parts well enough I think ... Especialy the crank shaft....

    My gs 500 makes some "funny noises" at times in idle ...but only momentarily.
    One time it sounded like that ,it was the valve clearance that needed adjustment .
    Plus : it always makes less noise when it's cold rather than when its hot.

    Hey my 2005 gs500
    Has power...turns over ...won't start . I think there is no power to spark plugs (new)

      My gs 500 2004 was made in Spain,now the newer entry Suzuki models are made in china ,which is even worse!

    Tras pelearme mucho averiguando sobre mi moto y su motor además del funcionamiento de los motores carburados llegue a esa conclusión gracias a entendidos sobre este modelo de moto. Y no os asustéis si el motor es ruidoso o traquetea, es así de diseño, bruto pero duro.

      Gracias por esa información, pero el problema con esta motocicleta era un rodamiento de varillas. El ruido era en realidad la biela haciendo ruido alrededor de la manivela y en el extremo superior. Sí, es necesario que los motores se calienten, y verificar esos otros aspectos es un buen lugar para comenzar si tiene problemas para descartar otras causas.

    I have 08 gs500F and mine has same issue plus now it’s leaking gas I rebuild carbs still same issue does anybody knw what the issue is

    • @Miller_20
      @Miller_20  4 года назад

      Where is the fuel leak from? There’s are several things it could be.

    • @traciel32100

      I’m not sure except the air box was full of gas

    • @Miller_20
      @Miller_20  4 года назад

      So that’s backing up from the carbs into the air box. They could be out of sync, the floats could be set too high, it could be getting too much fuel, or something along those lines. Without seeing it and knowing exactly what it’s doing, I can’t help too much.

      If I were you, I would take it to a shop and to make sure everything is okay with it. If you keep running if like that, something bad is bound to happen.
