Benjamin, I would have never guessed that you had any problems with your voice. The audio is that good sir. Also, you're in Kentucky? That's an awesome state. This is a great review of the new iPad. I liked all that you had to say about it. The limitations were the most important as that's why I got rid of the old iPad. It just doesn't do as well as a full on MacBook or other Notebook PC. I do like the new specs and hardware that you get with this new model. It is definitely an improvement over the older generations. That USB-C port is such a welcome. The potential for this new device with adapters is amazing. The possibilities seem less limited now. I'll personally will hold off for a while as to purchasing a computer like this. Like you said Benjamin. Maybe, iOS 13 will open the doors to less limitations with this hardware.
I bought the 11 inch and I am quite pleased with it. The 12.9 is a bit too big for my tastes. I already have Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro so didn't need the same form factor essentially---and yes this iPad is indeed a BEAST!
Chris Fox apparently IOS 12 was intended to add some extra capability, but IOS 11 caused so many complaints that apple decided to focus on performance and put back the extra functionality for iOS 13.
It’s a beast for sure, and if it did allow external drives, it would be a full pro machine. However, and I’m not trying to be a smart a$$, but with all the features people are wanting, wouldn’t you just find that in a MacBook Pro? I mean, at the end of the day, it’s still an iOS device...for the full pro experience wouldn’t you want pro software? I have mine for the convenience that a tablet offers...size, portability, ease of iOS...the fact that I can use a great LR app and with photoshop CC coming soon, just make even more worth it. It sounds like people want a Mac 2-in-1...full OS, portability, touchscreen...that would be amazing!!
While I do agree iOS can be a bit restrictive on the computing experience, for what a lot of people do, iOS is more than capable. The thing is an artists dream machine. Hell with affinity photo, and soon Photoshop, photo editing can be truly done too. Lumafusion is a kick-ass video editing app. iOS is getting a lot of great people grade apps. Don't write it off so easily 😜😉
Trevor Golding definitely! Microsoft office, Facebook, Netflix, RUclips, browser, PDF reader, photoshop .... it’s all there. More than what most people need on a regular basis.
Trevor Golding I agree however it’s not really possible to replace your laptop with your iPad due to the lack of mouse support and a proper file management system
Jack Yarrow since when do you need a mouse on an iPad? I just don’t think that’s necessary. I’m no apple sheep, but when it comes to the iPad pros, it is a laptop replacement for many. It is a computer for many. Does iOS have limiting factors? Most definitely it does. But mouse and trackpad support isn’t one of them. The iPad was based on touch input. Adding some type of pointer support would be pointless. Have you ever tried using a mouse on an android device? It isn’t the best experience. I run my tech business from my iPad. Now I realize I’m just one person, but I’m sure if others opened their minds to the possibilities, they could too.
Trevor Golding having the ability to use mouse is essential for any pro user who wants to replace their laptop with this iPad, for example if final cut ever came onto the iPad it would be very difficult to use only using touch input because it is less accurate! I wouldn’t necessarily ever have a need for mouse or trackpad support on an iPad but pro users certainly would!
Jack Yarrow I get your point. But remember when me and Trevor said it’s good enough for most people. Most people won’t use final cut... nor even photoshop. We both understand that it definitely can not replace a workstation laptop for any pros.
Just bought a pre- owned excellent condition for $610,i checked ebay, Amazon, swappa, Apple etc... this machine is still expensive everywhere and the 2020 version isn't a huge upgrade so i think is worth it
Jeff .. now imagine what the Jailbreak community could do this 😅 With a jb and more app support it could be a serious PRO machine & laptop replacement.
Thats the only reason I'm interested in the thing. Apple makes bitchen mobile hardware best in the industry STILL. Only issue is the constraints they put into iOS thats why JBer's exist to unlock iOS. With JB'ing we now get the best of BOTH WORLDS. Aka the industries *Best Hardware* and the Industries most stable and simple *Mobile Software* out with the customization of Android. Because of this very thing I will never go to Android, I only care to switch because of customization. Sorry but JB'ing does that so Android and its unoptimized mess can stay far away. I'll stick a stable OS that I can tinker with, instead of both the phone company and myself being able to tinker with it. Aka the company skinning the OS and adding there own bloatware.

I want one! We use iPad to edit all our videos for our sailing channel. They are small enough to easily fit in the boat while still powerful enough to create great results. But this one makes ours look like a toy!
Great review Jeff, it reflects many of the feelings iPad Pro users have with the device, they make it so powerful and then cripple it all through software. You can’t charge 2000 dollars for a media consumption machine.
The Home Button was glorious. Some so-called advancements really aren’t. A small increase in screen size is not worth losing the convenience and functionality of the home button.
I really don't see why they can't include a calculator app, especially when it's very easy to do and design to a decent standard. That just gives the impression of being purposefully difficult to me.
Also the downloadable calculators just feel clunky. They either have grainy looking buttons, ads on the screen, or a layout that just doesn’t belong. Apple could easily make a beautiful simple calculator app. If they wanted to really out do themselves they could add functions like voice features where you could say the calculation you need to even say “clear” to start over. Maybe even add some graphing functions or add the ability fot it to be a math reference tool. Maybe I would like to remember the order of operations and just need to ask “show order of operations”. I even could see the camera being able to recognize homework types for kids. Not to solve it but to recommend a tutorial based on the math homework. This could be very helpful for algebra, trig, or geometry. What if it could take a photo of a math problem, change the numbers to create a similar problem and withhold the answer for a user to practice with. That would be one heck of a calculator.
Olga l I agree it doesnt need a full screen one just one to get the job done. Even if they made it the size of the Iphone X turned sideways it would be perfect
The iPad Pro is the perfect device for an aspiring artist who’s also in school (me). It may not be the best option for some other people (which I completely understand) but for someone like me who doesn’t really need a full functioning computer, it’s absolutely perfect! That’s just my opinion tho :)
I’ve had the original iPad Pro 12.9 for 4 years or so and to be honest it’s been remarkable. One stop shopping for almost all of my multi Media needs when at home or traveling. All the iOS updates have been seem less upgrades that work nearly flawlessly and are intuitive like all other iOS devices, and I was an early adopter and stood in line to get the original iPhone 2g from att. Compared to windows its a night and day experience. I’m about to jump into this 2018 model and the only reason is because the lte SIM card won’t communicate with the radio of the device. It doesn’t recognize the sim. Tried swapping out to a new sim, disable cellular etc. not sure it’s worth the steep price Apple puts on it but it’s beyond anything I could ever dream of in a device.
Excellent review! Comprehensive and more important SENSIBLE. No hyperbole and I like how you leave a little tease for iOS 13 capability. Look forward to your next iPad Pro review!
flexman22 apple only cares about the iPHone and they don’t want mac sales to go down so ipad forever will be useless. Do urself a facir and get a surface or pixel slate
@@flexman22 People are buying up these iPad Pros with the assumption that iOS 13 will deliver the "Pro" experience we're all waiting for. This is foolish. This is Apple after all - a company notorious for cutting corners (see Louis Rossmann's channel). In fact, it is precisely because people bought the new iPad Pro knowing full well the limitations of iOS 12 that Apple will likely try to get away with it again next year (with such a premium product, and even marketed as a PC substitute, it is seriously inexcusable that it did not launch with a beefed-up OS). It could be years before we get an iOS with full desktop capability, which, by then, Apple will have likely dropped support for the 2018 model.
@@alchemy-the-animated-series Apple has consigned itself to being a mere luxury brand these days. Even John Sculley said it in an interview. The iPad Pro looks like a blast to use, but it's ultimately more like a fancy sports car than something that is of everyday practical and professional usage. It doesn't deserve the "Pro" label at all. Sure, some people can make it work for their professional needs, but most of everyone coming from a Mac or Windows PC will find it lacking. I own a Surface Pro and while it certainly doesn't deliver the tablet experience of iPads and Android tablets, you do get a full desktop OS so you can actually get stuff done with it. It lives up to it's "Pro" label. Can't comment on the Pixel Slate, but at the moment, Google, at the very least, does seem to be moving in a serious direction - more so than Apple anyways.
My opinion: It’s an overpowered netflix watching-videos-drawing-machine because due to the extreme limitations of iOS, this iPad is nowhere near a laptop replacement.
No support for ANY external hard drives. Clearly they want to discourage external drives so they can make money on their obscene pricing on storage. I have a lot of Apple products but not for much longer at this rate. Apple expects 3rd party apps to take care of this..... that's what Apple has said.
sunnibird yea, Apple is being blatantly greedy and obvious about it at this point which is making more and more people angry and alienating allot of their long timer users. So let’s hope they fix allot of what’s wrong with the iPad Pro in iOS 13
Great coverage, Jeff... I hope the SD card and external drive reader situation is resolved in an iOS12 update rather than iOS13. The latter is almost a year away from coming and doesn't make sense to limit potential buyers when the device is for sale now. Conversely, if we are to wait for iOS13 to fix these problems, does that mean iOS, the platform, isn't ready for USB-C for anything beside charging and certain supported peripherals? Side note, I am super excited and cannot wait to see iOS apps work on macOS. That should bridge the gap between on-the-go experiences from the iPhone and iPad with desktop-grade use cases, instead of having to do a little on the former and finish the work on the latter.
Bought it...and the slim folio case and the pencil and wonderful pencils ✏️ like screen protector. Sounds just like a pencil on paper. I bought the 512 gb
William Yun the iOS is not the problem, it’s the apps. It’s need pro apps that can integrate with their superiority macOS programs(FCX, Adobe, file management). If we got these pro Apps, then less people wouldn’t mind jumping over to the iPad Pro without too much compromise.
Yes, iOS is too basic and STILL stuck in the 3.5 inch iPhone screen UI of it's original design (although somewhat improved since then). This is supposed to change dramatically in iOS 13 next year so stay tuned.
@@jed23ify It is the os which is iOS. You saw the improved productivity after the iOS allowed the side by side apps running at the same time? Apps on iOS cannot be better without the iOS.
dont be fooled about how powerful you think the cpu is. operating system has a HUGE part in what a product scores in geek bench. just as an example, devices that run a snapdragon 845 on the half assed windows ARM OS, score about half as much as they do on the chrome OS and android counterparts. on android, the snapdragon 845 scores about as high as the entry level macbook air 2018 running an 8th gen y series i5. on windows? its about as powerful as a intel celeron. ARM chips will always be inferior to intel x64 chips.
Killer review, Jeff. Thanks for the hardware coverage at the end. You sounded awesome in the video, despite being a little under the weather. Cheers from Nashville :)
Thomas Wells don’t buy it, it’s a complete waste of money. You can buy a MacBook Pro/Air for the same price. The MacBook is faster, edits better, faster streaming videos and internet browsing, better for coding, and basically everything. Just buy the regular 10.5in for $500-600 with the Apple Pencil. Until the weak software can assist the powerful hardware its a rip off
Perpendicular Driving the iPad Pro will definitely drop below $1k resell value within the next 4 years, however If you are still planning to get it I would recommend the 11in model since it’s more convenient and easier to carry/use for work
Right for the price everything is restricted it has USB C but can't really take advantage of importing things to it since it's restricted and for the hardware should be running MAC OS. Running IOS on such a big device The UI looks terrible.
Why does every reviewer complain about HDD's not working with the ipad? Isn't it obvious? 2018 ipad pro 64gb is $1k, -----> $750 increase for 1TB storage. Do you really think they'd allow us to just buy the cheaper 64gb and be able to use it with any cheap, $90 1TB HDD? Reviewers never think of these simple things. They might even release their own Apple HDD that the ipad will miraculously be able to read.
You are a remarkable, impeccable, dedicated video presenter and producer. I never write comments but as a speaking professional, I had to. The fact that you keep from using the pronoun "I", even keeping your face out of the frame really shows how little ego you have. Your scenery, lighting and overall movement of hands and product is very compelling and 20 minutes fly by! And your voice - even with virus - is pleasant to listen to. Your sound is great, what model of mic do you use? Congratulations again, I have much to learn from someone at your level. -Marc
TechGoggles Buy a MacBook Pro then! I don’t want OS X on this device. They can’t control the heat in something as thin as the MB Pro. Imagine what that’d be like on a tablet.
If only they had a computer with no fan right... cough macbook cough all apple device over heat cough they dont care about heat cough.. they want money
I assume the extra RAM is only there to handle the extra storage capacity. In practice both will run the same for with no perceptible difference because of how efficient IOS is with RAM management. However, extra RAM would be most welcome for future-proofing, and that’s Apple nickel and diming the customer again IMO.
makasete30 this is false. No amount of "ram management" will help with loading and editing large files. For $2k anything less than 16gb is laughable for a machine poised to run Photoshop and edit 4K video. I suspect when the real convergence of IOS and MAC happens (in a few years), we will see better specs. But for now, it’s really disappointing when you also consider the lack of connectivity, lack of a real file system, lack of mouse support, etc. It’s a shame since I believe Apple could provide all of those features TODAY but intentionally handicaps these devices.
Went to the Apple store and got my 12.9 iPad Pro. Traded in my 1st gen iPad Pro for $250. I’m using it right now and I don’t know. Nothing wrong with it. It’s just that I am starting to feel a little regretful. I somehow feel that I should’ve just kept my old iPad Pro. It’s slightly smaller, lighter, and slightly better looking, but it does not justify the cost that I had to pay. And now I just realized that I have to buy a usb c to usb adaptor so I can connect it to my old iMac so I can connect to iTunes and restore from my backup. And I also have to buy a usb c to headphone jack adaptor. I’m really regretting it, but there is no turning back.
That's why you never sell your old one until you are fully accustomed with your new device. Apple does that on purpose so you do not return the product.
This is first video I have actually seen the ipad pro really... all other unboxing videos did not even showed it a closer look.... nice review .... great job on review... :)
"You have an 11-inch option, and you get a 12.9-inch option, which I personally recomend. We will talk about that a lil' bit later" So, where did you actually talk about one screen size against the other? Don't make promises you can't keep.
Apple loves when all of our stuff can go to iCloud, so we can fill up our iCloud and then have to upgrade our iCloud to more space = paying more per month. Thats a money move for Apple. I am a Apple fan, but i deff know how hungry Apple is. They make great products but they also knickle and dime us for another billion dollar profit.
YES! Finally see a review with the silver iPad Pro. Everyone seems to be getting the space gray and i just absolutely love the silver one. Waiting for my iPad Pro to be delivered! 😼
@john smith > nah, the apple products i already own like my ipod and ipad are for me. and you know why? because they both have a headphone jack! "it’s amazing" like steve jobs used to say. i’ll let others "move forward" lossy and laggy bluetooth audio and keep my wired audio quality that needs no charging like millions of people using jacks in the world.
@MrBlaq > thanks mate, but i’ll never use wireless audio. quality is lossy, even with bluetooth 5. and it is laggy, so useless for audio monitoring. and i already own better quality wired devices that i don’t need to charge and don’t drain ipad’s battery faster.
Mike T Who does that on an iPad? It’s utterly ridiculous to think that people can do that on an thin and light iPad these days. Just few years ago the biggest storage option on an iPad was 64gb.
lassi lahtiluoma There are plenty of people who do that. With Lightroom, Affinity here and Photoshop coming soon, there are a lot of creative pros using iPads for work. Just because you don’t doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. A few years ago is history in the tech world.
I wandering how the new Hyper USB Hub will allow you to move files from SD cards, hardrives ect? Will it have app support to get those files on to the iPad. Thanks for the review
I use an iPad 3 which stopped upgrading at iOS 9, but I never use the headphone jack in preference to Bluetooth headphones. Much more convenient. So I get that Apple has dropped the headphone jack. It's in the past. Remember the first iMac had no floppy drive? What a crisis! And I get that I have to use various cloud-sourcing apps to import files. It protects the iPad's security 'sandbox'. Notwithstanding media files are very big, what then is the problem? It's not a laptop, it's an iPad.

Dude you showed everything i was looking forward to know. Well done!!
I just got it 256GB 12.9 its great and thank goodness i saw this video.
I bought the 11 inch and I am quite pleased with it. The 12.9 is a bit too big for my tastes. I already have Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro so didn't need the same form factor essentially---and yes this iPad is indeed a BEAST!
It’s very tamed & im not sure why it’s so tamed, because they could make it much more capable.
Chris Fox apparently IOS 12 was intended to add some extra capability, but IOS 11 caused so many complaints that apple decided to focus on performance and put back the extra functionality for iOS 13.
Hopefully the software will catch up with the hardware
I got the iPad Pro 12.9 inch 2018 Space Grey 64GB yesterday reduced from $999 to $750
While I do agree iOS can be a bit restrictive on the computing experience, for what a lot of people do, iOS is more than capable.
Just bought a pre- owned excellent condition for $610,i checked ebay, Amazon, swappa, Apple etc... this machine is still expensive everywhere and the 2020 version isn't a huge upgrade so i think is worth it
This is like an iPhone XS Max but on steroids.
Beast Mode.
Jeff .. now imagine what the Jailbreak community could do this 😅 With a jb and more app support it could be a serious PRO machine & laptop replacement.
Im will buy this in december 2019 so want to know everything about it.. As it is costly. I will buy 256gb 11inch
I tried the 11 inch, and trust me I love the 12.9” bigger screen is always better

Spud E. Buddy Obviously, this is not a computer. It might, but you know, Apple has to sell the MacBooks too.

Willy andme Lol it is a computer. So is your phone, your Xbox, and even the radio in your car.
Lol tried to brush your eyelash avatar off my screen
Really random, I thought your profile pic was an eyelash and so I spent five minutes trying to rub it off my iPad and got frustrated when it wouldn’t.

All that power and I still can't put icons where I want
I want one!
We use iPad to edit all our videos for our sailing channel. They are small enough to easily fit in the boat while still powerful enough to create great results. But this one makes ours look like a toy!
I wanted to see the 11” version, but perfect review as allways Jeff!
Great review Jeff, it reflects many of the feelings iPad Pro users have with the device, they make it so powerful and then cripple it all through software. You can’t charge 2000 dollars for a media consumption machine.
It’s pretty! I am impressed! I want! I will get!
After all I’m still sportin the iPad Air
iPad air gang
The Home Button was glorious. Some so-called advancements really aren’t. A small increase in screen size is not worth losing the convenience and functionality of the home button.
Almost 2000$ iPad, still doesn't have calculator app :D
Calixy you can download the same calculator thats on the iphones, thats what i have done on my gen 2 ipad pro and it works great
Olga l I agree it doesnt need a full screen one just one to get the job done. Even if they made it the size of the Iphone X turned sideways it would be perfect
Simple calculations can be done in the search bar, but I understand your point. I downloaded a calculator app on my iPad.
I'm actually getting this exact device for Christmas
bro your voice is so soothing :D
The iPad Pro is the perfect device for an aspiring artist who’s also in school (me). It may not be the best option for some other people (which I completely understand) but for someone like me who doesn’t really need a full functioning computer, it’s absolutely perfect! That’s just my opinion tho :)
Don’t apologize for your voice you just might get more subs from ASMR fans.
lol
I’m getting the iPad for my 2019 Christmas gift
same
Same I might get it for my birthday which is in 7 January
Me too
How’s the iPad?
Enrique Pittaluga it’s very Good
I just bought a very clean refurbished 12.9 with 64gb for 400$, it’s still very viable
Will wait for the 12.9 OLED version, and if there will be a mouse support in the new future , then it will be a laptop replacement for me.
Excellent review! Comprehensive and more important SENSIBLE. No hyperbole and I like how you leave a little tease for iOS 13 capability. Look forward to your next iPad Pro review!
It should have a full desktop OS. Crazily beautiful yet awesomely frustrating.
I desperately want an iPad Pro, but I feel like I should hold off on buying one until Apple delivers on a substantial OS.
@@lesbianwalrus yeah. I'm in the same situation. I could buy it and hope software updates will add what I would like. That's a lot of hopin though.
flexman22 apple only cares about the iPHone and they don’t want mac sales to go down so ipad forever will be useless. Do urself a facir and get a surface or pixel slate
@@flexman22 People are buying up these iPad Pros with the assumption that iOS 13 will deliver the "Pro" experience we're all waiting for. This is foolish. This is Apple after all - a company notorious for cutting corners (see
Louis Rossmann's channel).
Yeah you’re right they have “obscene” pricing on storage LOL really dude?
Tronam I can connect external hard drives via wifi transfer material back and forth easy semmiezy on my new iPad Pro
Best ipad pro review i have come across till date! Bravo!!!
Did you forget to say why you chose the 12.9 instead of the 11?
That finger tapping driving me craaazy
5:35 I was so nervous you were going to drop it 😬
such an amazing upgrade from previous iPads. I hope to see huge upgrades on the iPhones too!
It doesn't matter if it's got a super powerful CPU in it. The iOS is not good enough to make use of it.
@@ChildOL And the I pad has been around for almost 10 years and still not there yet.
dont be fooled about how powerful you think the cpu is. operating system has a HUGE part in what a product scores in geek bench. just as an example, devices that run a snapdragon 845 on the half assed windows ARM OS, score about half as much as they do on the chrome OS and android counterparts. on android, the snapdragon 845 scores about as high as the entry level macbook air 2018 running an 8th gen y series i5. on windows? its about as powerful as a intel celeron. ARM chips will always be inferior to intel x64 chips.

Until the weak software can assist the powerful hardware its a rip off
Thx mate 😉

Exactly, in my country the 256gb model is 315$ more expensive than on US market... This is just insane!
Right for the price everything is restricted it has USB C but can't really take advantage of importing things to it since it's restricted and for the hardware should be running MAC OS. Running IOS on such a big device The UI looks terrible.
JM TechReview yeah I ordered the 256gb, 12.9” WiFi with folio cover and pencil = 1809 usd.

Why does every reviewer complain about HDD's not working with the ipad? Isn't it obvious?

Do you really think they'd allow us to just buy the cheaper 64gb and be able to use it with any cheap, $90 1TB HDD?
Reviewers never think of these simple things.
They might even release their own Apple HDD that the ipad will miraculously be able to read.
This iPad would be total overkill if it had macOS.. unfortunately iOS won't let that happen.

That Ram being restricted to the 1tb model is very customer unfriendly
@9to5Mac I had email notification that you "Loved" my comment.....i guess you had a change of heart :(
I assume the extra RAM is only there to handle the extra storage capacity.

$2k for an iPad is utterly ridiculous.
Nobody said you had to configure it that high. Starts off at $800 which is well worth the money.
1Tb of storage in an iPad is utterly ridiculous as well
lassi lahtiluoma No it’s not. Not if you’re a photographer or videographer who is offloading large files for storage and editing.

Pretty soon, Microsoft will take their Surface Pro and rub it on Apple’s face.
Mudkip the Awkward Gamer but before it even tries to do that, it has to update windows 10.
