My dad drove for Greyhound from 1969 until 1990 out of Des Moines, Iowa. He passed away in 1995. Thankfully, I still remember so many things about the different buses he drove and the things he told me about them. I remember how fond he was of this bus and I remember the time my brother and I were with him in Chicago, around Christmas of 1984, I believe it was. He was scheduled to bring one of these buses to Des Moines, and it was loaded with packages; both underneath and inside, clear up to the two front rows of seats. We were so excited to get to ride on it! However, it never happened. They moved my dad to do what they called, protect, a Chicago to Des Moines run. Meaning, if bus A got full and booking went over (I think it was 10 passengers turning it into what was called a double) then my dad had to take that instead. And he sure enough did! About 2 he later, my brother and I were on a westbound bus with about 20 people on it. Honestly, it doesn't matter. I had so much fun riding the Greyhound all of those years with my dad, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Mostly everything is gone from back then. The depots in Omaha, Des Moines and Chicago have all been torn down over the decades. The garages are gone, too. Thankfully, I still have a lot of my dad's Greyhound stuff. I've got every logbook and piece of paperwork he ever had. I even have some of his uniforms, too. Best of all, is that I have a lot of great memories of spending time with my dad.
My era when your father drove, maybe he drove when I was on it? He must have seen a lot in that era, could have written a book on it too. You rode with your father, must have been a blast as a kid. Your father was good to go for sure. Good luck to you!
Was on a GreyHound from LA to Rhode Island 1978... Never want to do that again, and never did! Good service from Greyhound, a $55 ticket special, but no sleep, an aching back and leg cramps, I was 23 years old then!
Supercruiser and Americruiser bring back a lot of memories when I was a kid in the late 70’s when my Mom,brother and I would take a Greyhound every summer from LA to EL Paso,Tx. It was such a thrilling time to board the bus and the smell of the air conditioning. We would pick the front seat so we could see the road and open view and watch the driver . I would love stopping at every stop and get off to stretch our legs and eat cafeteria food or get some comic books to read. First stop would be Indio, then Blythe, arrive at Phoenix at midnight where there would be a 30 minute wait so they could clean the bus. Then I remember staring out into the desert with nothing but stars out in the sky and maybe some far away light in the distance and even far away lighting. It was magical.
I was driving this bus between Madison, WI and Chicago. It was brand new and out of the factory, There were 3 buses on that convoy. All 3 of us were pulled over at the Belvidere toll gate by the Illinois troopers. Turns out the buses didn't have the proper permits so we 3 drivers were hauled off to jail until Greyhound provided the permits and bailed us out. Ah, the memories. Great job!!
Wow, incredible that Greyhound's compliance dept wouldn't have had that covered. But you drivers being arrested was way over the top. The troopers must've been on their monthlys because they knew Greyhound as a reputable company.
I rode on that model more than several times, cross country too. My favorite bus, was the old Trailways bus, looked like the Caddy of buses back in that era. That Greyhound was slick, use to always notice it and gawk!
The greyhound has been used as a highway bus during 70~ 80 in the korea. at that time the steward girl is as popular as the airplane ' stewardess. this bus reminded me of a past memory . Thanks for your posting. 🍎
I remember riding this bus, maybe once or twice in my life. This is so much of a reminder of my childhood. And plus, I used to own a toy version of this bus.
I got to ride in a new MC-6 back in 1970 in British Columbia when I was 18 years old. It was a wonderful experience. Thank you for posting this great video.
Never rode an MC-6. First saw them in 1972 in a trip from Louisiana/Texas to Los Angeles and again in 1977. I think Greyhound finally sold the last of them off in 1980.
Are you sure? They were restricted to Northeast Corridor and West Coast service. They wouldn't have been on the route you've described. Maybe you rode an MC-7.
I grew up with a best friend who's family was in the charter [motorcoach], and mass transit [line-run with fishbowls] business. We had one MC-6 stop by the bus garage, circa '86, and the eight of my colleagues and myself who were there that day got to go for a ten-mile drive in that most impressively restored bus. Driving a "6", is high atop my bucket list, and that list is being 'checked off with a new urgency'. Thanks so much for posting this:-D
In 1980 my friend in Thousand Oaks, CA bought one of the few Canadian 6's that had not been re-powered to 8V71/automatic. His bus had the 12V71 & 4 speed manual. He owned two buses for charter, a 5 for years then added the 6. I was running a Scenicruiser doing weekend and summer charters. I was teaching school at the time. For my 6 years having my tour time, I often drove his coaches if mine was down for repairs, or if he needed a driver. He was a business man who started his little company as a one bus commuter run to downtown LA. I loved taking the 6 on Vegas runs, it hit the Cajon grade just before Nevada and it would SAIL up the grade! My bus was down for repairs one weekend when I had a University Jazz Band schedule for LA to SF trip. They wanted to go up the coast route, Hiway 1, beautiful ride. I planned on his 5 but instead got the 6. FUN drive on the windy road on the cliffs, like a bloated sports car! It convinced me to switch out my bus 8V71 for the truck version 318 (8V71 with 318 hp and more torque/pep) so I added a 10spd roadranger to utilize the extra power. Fun too...
I also had a friend in Buena Park, CA in 1981 who ran a small operation - mostly the GMC "Buffaloes" - but, one of whose coaches was a MC-6 with a 12V (amounting to two twin 6 Detroits V-ed together) and a 4 speed manual. He probably picked it up from the same sale in LA yours came from. I drove it on various tours from 81-84, one of which was across the country. I remember one tour which took me to Victoria, B.C. Greyhound drivers in the same parking lot were amazed at the thing - couldn't believe what had been driving across Canada a decade earlier (I think this one had a Canadian history). It was quite a creature - a beautiful sound. With the 55 mph speed limit at the time, 4th gear was borderline too slow to drive at without breaking the speed limit.
Cool! I always wondered if there were any that weren't repowered. Almost everything that has that pre-MC-9 style has an 8V71 (with the exception of many MC5c's, and then there's MC 1 and 2, but you never see or hear/read those anywhere).
shrinkg Gordon You put a 10 speed road ranger in a bus !!!! That is fantastic man. I have driven every Hound bus out there in my 43 years, except the MC 6. I drove the old GMC with the 4 speed. The MC 5 and the MC 7 also had 4 speeds. Then we got MC 8's with automatic. I always hated them and dreaded every trip in one. Then we got MC 9's with the 5 speed. Great bus ! Then we got the MCI 102 wide body buses. They were OK except for the strange passenger door vertical opener. I was the first driver to operate the new MCI "E" model on a line run when they first came out. Later the "J" model was tested, but Greyhound did not buy them because they were just too expensive. By far my favorite was the Prevost H3 40 with 6 speed. Drove those for many years and loved them. Happy memories.
Something tells me we're talking about the same person, shrinkg gordon. This guy ran an operation out of Buena Park, CA and leased his MC6-12 several times - mostly during the summer - (along with other coaches) to a musical organization in Thousand Oaks, CA. I drove several tours across the country for the musical organization.
I’m 60 and been in love with Greyhound Bus lines all my life! Every time I saw one , I would say the “ Puppy dog bus” I couldn’t read the writing back then! I remember riding with my family from time to time from the South to the North. All the sounds and smells associated with travel by bus. We would bring fried chicken rapped in foil in a brown bag. Minimum hiring age was 24 years and remember living up North and driving to 16 & Market in Philadelphia to apply, got hired, and was scheduled to attend training in New Jersey... Then the strike happened! Never got to drive for Greyhound, but ended up as a Motorcoach Operator anyway. Spent half my life behind the wheel in the industry and have enjoyed most of it! They say if you find something you enjoy doing, you’ll never work a day in your life 😁!!
OMG!!!!! I Haven't Seen Or Rode These Since The Mid 70's When You Were Allowed To Smoke (Cigarettes) On The Bus. I Remember That "Extra" Step In The Middle Of The Bus. And Some Were Automatics Great Video. We Need A Time Machine So We Can Go Back In Time Where There Were No Cellphones. No Facebook. NO TWITTER. Just My Trusty Transistor Radio With The "ONE SIDED EARPHONE".
Rode on the 6 as a kid but never drove the 6. Had a few 5s doing side work for charter companies. The 6 was great for climbing mountains in British Columbia. The tank capacity was awesome for freight as we once carried a lot of parcels in western Canada before First Group bought us & buried us forever Oct 30.
Nice video. Reminds me of traveling on a similar retired greyhound “double decker” bus our church owned. Took many youth group trips on that bus, great memories. Thanks for posting this :)
The coach seats reminds me when I was young in the UK 🇬🇧 when I was a boy I used to go to a special school and the coach had the same seats that I'm watching on this coach the greyhound what fantastic coaches you have in the United States of America 🇺🇸💯
THE BEST BACK IN THE DAY THE MOTOR SOUND was nicer and loudrer back in the 1970s THE SMELL IN AND OUT AND THE LOOK THE RIDE , PLUS 70S PIN PONG MACHINEs listening to them while waiting to get into the next bus what an experience back in those days!
I rode the Super Cruiser many times on the Toronto-Vancouver route. Second last row left side, window seat. You were so far back, that you could not see out of the front windscreen. Those were the days. Greyhound, how could you buy a standard bus which is boring?
During the first ten years of my life I lived in Greencastle, Indiana and Greyhound had a bus depot not far from where we lived at it was possible to walk to it easily. I can recall times when I saw the MCI mc-6's arriving and departing. I always appreciated seeing them. My mom's older sister and brother in-law lived in Mount Vernon Iowa and there were plenty of times I was interested and wanted to take the bus to there and back but mom and dad did not want to go Greyhound. I understood why but never tried to get my way.
Second one of these I've seen. I subscribed today. I love all this stuff about these old buses. The first clip I saw was about the Eagle buses Continental Trailways used.
Hey I appreciate your subscription and thanks for checking on my old bus videos I'll be having some new historic buses coming up later this year there's a few festivals coming up and I plan to attend and film some historic buses that you may have not seen so stay tuned and thanks again for watching I appreciate it take care and see you in the next video
Never got to see Greyhound's MCI MC-6's in active service during the 1970's. I remember the MC-7's as a kid in the early 1980's. Glad to see this one preserved. Greyhound had a variety fleet back then.
Never rode one myself. Plus I never recall riding the PD-4107 Buffalo either. Like The MC-6s, the Buffaloes were restricted to certain routes, mostly Midwestern to Florida north-south routes.
I remember the MC-6. Greyhound would use them occasionally between the Bay Area and Los Angeles and I would typically see them either parked in the San Jose depot, pulling out of the depot onto Almaden Ave, or on Monterey Highway south of town.
Yes I like Greyhound better than Trailways when I was a kid my grandfather took me from New York to Pittsburgh for summer vacation to see his relatives it was alot of fun
Nice! I'm a 1989 baby I grew up riding the MC-12 and DL3. I remember getting on a bus that resembles this one before bacc in 1994 when my family and I took a trip to Pensacola,Florida and when we were going bacc home to Cali we were on a bus that looked like this from the outside but the inside was all hard like some metal shit going on and I remember it being red interior lol I brought it up not to long ago to my mom and she said she remembered and she said that Greyhound bus was weird and nasty lol it had carving all in the metal interior hahaha I never seen that model of bus ever again in my life afterwards.
I've only seen MC-6's in books and occasionally movies. But I like them because of the two-level vista windows. Now that I know it's in Hershey at the AACA Museum, I know where to find it.
I remember riding this bus once from New York to Philadelphia…whisper quiet and very smooth ride…top speed was 65 mph…Very wide though and in fact some states did not allow them back then because of their width… 102 inches I believe it was… But anyway it was a beautiful coach even by today’s standards
Yes, they were exclusive to Greyhound but could only run up and down the west coast and the northeast corridor along with Canadian service. The MC-6s were sold off by Greyhound in 1980. It was the mid-1980s before 102"-wide coaches could run the US unrestricted.
@@wnewbury4 That route must've been pooled or interlined service with Orang Belt Stages. Bakersfield to Barstow was their territory back when you were driving. OBS interlined with Greyhound on San Francisco thru skeds to Dallas, Memphis, and Atlanta. but the MC-6s would've only been allowed to go as far as the California border.
Long, high, wide, heavy and scarce...Originally had V12-71 Detroit engines. Too wide to run most states, primarily used in western mts. Love the shape and that visor over windshield. I drove tours mostly MC8 and 9..would like nothing more than to wheel one of these down the road a ways..
They switch from a 12V71 Detroit Diesel engine with 4speed manual Transmission to a 8V71 TA Detroit Diesel engine with HT740 Allison Transmission because the 12V71 isn't legal in some states because of emissions issues
The MC-6 is kind of a funny lookin' machine, in my opinion; although I'm sure it turned heads back in the day. It's nice to see this bus still in good working order.
I havent been to USA or even travelled in this buses..But i like this model buses a lot..Saw these buses in films.Super model designs.Old models rocking In fast and furious also i saw this model buses
Kutwrite...Richfield Bus Co. Richfield, MN. A suburb of Minneapolis. One of the major charter operators in this area. I believe back in the day they might have done a few scheduled service trips too.
The MC6s were all originally manual trans buses. IIRC there were 12 total; 6 of whom went to Canada. Those retained their stick transmissions, whereupon those remaining in the USA were converted to automatic trans.
I drive them out of Calgary AB west thru the mountains. Couldn't beat the 12v in the hillsbut the engine torque made it difficult to keep a clutch in them. They always "chattered" upon starting in 1st. gear. They only had 4 speeds.
Wow, looks like the urban legend is very much alive, prior to this all I had was a really worn out picture that was in the bus shop I used to work in the late 80's. Commendable for a private investment to preserve a rare piece of history. Thank you for sharing this video! Does this event happen annually?
So.."REverse" was ALWAYS off once retransmissioned..:) IThe pre-"Speed" looking FIshbowls and lookalikes from Flxible same deal here in Los Anngeles, SoCal in the 1970s: They had four speed manual trans with the reverse swithc, ina console of various styles specified, then retransmissioned..some Fishbowls mnight have had the switch on fdash just like this MC6 and others and there was no console to hold the swithces as on others..KI have a pic of late 70s with three spped Allison V730, but a a console, standard ashtray like, for reverse, obviosuly a late model manaul changed to auto..take carew!

I'm obsessed with these old buses, I myself drive for Greyhound for 9 years now
Thanks for the comment.. and thanks for checking out my video !
Supercruiser and Americruiser bring back a lot of memories when I was a kid in the late 70’s when my Mom,brother and I would take a Greyhound every summer from LA to EL Paso,Tx. I rode on that model more than several times, cross country too. My favorite bus, was the old Trailways bus, looked like the Caddy of buses back in that era. That Greyhound was slick, use to always notice it and gawk!

70 년대 그레이하운드를 복원 해서 운행 까지 하시니 정말 대단함과 열정 높이 인정 합니다!
I have ridden a greyhound more then once in my younger days. It’s a great ride. One if my favorite buses.
I had forgotten about these until seeing this very, very nice one. Rode a couple of these.
Great content watching from Louisville Kentucky
Thanks for checking out my video
I remember a few trips from NY to Georgia on greyhound in the 70”s. The good old days for me.
Ms Tee, I too but in reverse
From Albany Georgia, to Port Authority of New York. From there we took the 66 to Newark. Good times and great memories.
I got to ride in a new MC-6 back in 1970 in British Columbia when I was 18 years old. It was a wonderful experience. Thank you for posting this great video.
Man, that Greyhound looks like it could straight from LA to NYC, express, today. Nicely restored!
It's in great condition
Thanks for the comment 😀 👍
I'm a 25yo bus driver in Italy, my biggest dream is to drive one of those old "metallic" Greyhound buses across US... 😍
COME HERE AND APPLY FOR GREYHOUND HAHAHA
My favorite Greyhound bus of all time!! Rode on this when I was a kid.
Never rode an MC-6. First saw them in 1972 in a trip from Louisiana/Texas to Los Angeles and again in 1977. I think Greyhound finally sold the last of them off in 1980.
Here in Mexico there was the PEÑA very similar to the MC-6 Witch a 12V71 engine, greetings from Mexico.
Awesome! Thank you! I posted a video of a bus trip in the north of Russia. Happy viewing.
Very nice looking bus...Love the MCI
I got to ride one of these as a teen age boy from St.Louis Mo. to Nashville Tn. back in 1972.
Are you sure? They were restricted to Northeast Corridor and West Coast service. They wouldn't have been on the route you've described. Maybe you rode an MC-7.
That MC 6 is super nice. I remember the green window tint, so nostalgic.
this bus is great looking, im glad its around
This is my all time favorite bus, followed closely by the MCI MC-7. I always thought they were handsome buses.
These buses are great looking and was a rare sight, now it's really rare
In my coach driving career I haven't had the chance to drive a 6. But I've driven the 7, 8 and 9. All were great solid buses.
Thanks for slow motion at drivers seat to read the switches description.
I loved riding greyhound when I was a kid especially the pd4501
Thanks for the comment 😀 👍

What a machine , A
Masterpiece of engineering
Built for Quality & safety of the

I am no expert, but ahead of her time.
Damn back when Greyhound bus actually had world-class service, and affordable prices, and when MCI made good-looking buses.
Definitely the best looking with the best livery design!

Good video-presentation of this MCI and the 100th anniversary event!
Regards!
Thanks, I appreciate that
A thing of beauty. 💓 Brings back memories of my childhood.
That's cool.. thanks for sharing...
I loved near the nj Howell garage so I got so see mc9 buses and eagle model 20 buses .. but I got to ride them often to new york city
Thanks for the comment 😀 👍
Second one of these I've seen. I subscribed today. I love all this stuff about these old buses. The first clip I saw was about the Eagle buses Continental Trailways used.
Hey I appreciate your subscription and thanks for checking on my old bus videos I'll be having some new historic buses coming up later this year there's a few festivals coming up and I plan to attend and film some historic buses that you may have not seen so stay tuned and thanks again for watching I appreciate it take care and see you in the next video
i would love to drive a greyhound bus.
SALAMAT!!! THANKS FOR WATCHING!
Never got to see Greyhound's MCI MC-6's in active service during the 1970's. I remember the MC-7's as a kid in the early 1980's. Glad to see this one preserved. Greyhound had a variety fleet back then.
Its definately nice to see this one still alive
Wow this just keeps getting even more awesome!
Thanks
this is a good old mci bus
Of all the buses i rode in The Greyhound Fleet , This is one i didn't get to ride in!
Never rode one myself. Plus I never recall riding the PD-4107 Buffalo either. Like The MC-6s, the Buffaloes were restricted to certain routes, mostly Midwestern to Florida north-south routes.
I remember the MC-6. Greyhound would use them occasionally between the Bay Area and Los Angeles and I would typically see them either parked in the San Jose depot, pulling out of the depot onto Almaden Ave, or on Monterey Highway south of town.
can you believe that there is any left after only i think it was 100 ever being made?
@@BusTVChan 102 were built
Beatiful bus
I know right what a beautiful coach this is
I remember one thing about Greyhound you wasn't going to get hot or sweat those buses stayed cold lol.
Wow really? They stayed cold.. just looking at this bus makes me think it's gunna be a long hot ride hahah 😅
✌️✌️✌️✌️ thanks for checking out my video and thanks for the comment
Moving right along! 😎👍🇺🇸
Thanks for the comment 😀 👍
Yes I like Greyhound better than Trailways when I was a kid my grandfather took me from New York to Pittsburgh for summer vacation to see his relatives it was alot of fun
Coach way ahead of its time.
These were exported to Peru, my grandfather and uncles drove them for couple of decades
Drove one once. Bakersfield to Barstow. V8 automatic, not the previous V12. Nice.
Was there in it a Detroit 8V92 instead a 12V71? The 92 series was lauched in 1974.
@@newlookfishbowl1979 V8 71, I believe. Definitely not a V12. Greyhound did away with the V12s. I started driving bus in 1973.
@@thegodblogger3812 I worked for OBS.
Long, high, wide, heavy and scarce...Originally had V12-71 Detroit engines. Too wide to run most states, primarily used in western mts. Love the shape and that visor over windshield. I drove tours mostly MC8 and 9..would like nothing more than to wheel one of these down the road a ways..
all american coaches were repowered with 8/71 jimmies. the canadian coaches never down sized and ran 4 sp standards. they used to run highway 1.
와! 그레이하운드 반갑다,
아직도 움직이는걸 보니 대단하기까지 하다,
경부고속도로 영동고속도로 달리던 그레이하운드,
Nice Bus!
I love the sound of it
Yeah its a nice bus, thanks for checking out my video
They switch from a 12V71 Detroit Diesel engine with 4speed manual Transmission to a 8V71 TA Detroit Diesel engine with HT740 Allison Transmission because the 12V71 isn't legal in some states because of emissions issues
The MC-6 is kind of a funny lookin' machine, in my opinion; although I'm sure it turned heads back in the day. It's nice to see this bus still in good working order.
That bus should still turn heads.. but maybe only bus fan heads
That 1970 Greyhound charter bus, would b more fun to ride. I want to travel to Arizona from Los Angeles for a splendid 7 day vacation! 🏝
I havent been to USA or even travelled in this buses..But i like this model buses a lot..Saw these buses in films.Super model designs.Old models rocking
In fast and furious also i saw this model buses
Quite a handsome ride. Thanks!
I liked that "Richfield" marked bus next to it, too. Maybe ex-Trailways?
Kutwrite...Richfield Bus Co. Richfield, MN. A suburb of Minneapolis. One of the major charter operators in this area. I believe back in the day they might have done a few scheduled service trips too.
@@zyglo9826 Thanks.
100 built, 85 to US GLI.
15 to GLOC in Canada. Very cool bus to work on!
Unique looking bus for sure. I still think the Eagle series buses are the best looking from that era.
I like the eagle model ae20 out of all the eagle buses
✌️✌️✌️✌️ thanks for checking out my video and thanks for the comment
How many of you know that Greyhound name is original from Australia where it started in 1912.
I never knew that.. thanks for sharing that information 👍
👍 😊Thanks for the comment 🚏 🚍
MC 6 and MC 7 now that's a treat.
I know right
That looks beautiful!
It is a beautiful coach
Thanks for the comment 😀 👍
And still looking good. Bus well Preserved.
Yes definitely looks just as new. Only 100 were ever made so this is a rare bus.
BusTV Chan Yeah back then them and the golden eagles were the ruler of the highways.
Sick !
THANKS FOR WATCHING!
Aún hoy! Es un HERMOSO autobús!
✌️✌️✌️✌️ thanks for checking out my video and thanks for the comment
I agree with you it is a beautiful bus ..
Wow, looks like the urban legend is very much alive, prior to this all I had was a really worn out picture that was in the bus shop I used to work in the late 80's. Commendable for a private investment to preserve a rare piece of history. Thank you for sharing this video! Does this event happen annually?
This event happened annually with a different theme each year, I believe this year they are doing transit buses theme

THANKS FOR WATCHING I APPRECIATE THAT!!
My Grampa worked on that bus. He was chief inspector for MCI for many years.
That's pretty cool. Where did he work on the buses at?
He worked in the plant in Pembina, where I work now, for over 40 years.
I love those buses I wish that they can bring it back
That would be cool, but maybe noone will order it haha
@@BusTVChan well new buses are better anyway
그레이하운드 중앙고속 한진 금호 한시대에 로망버스이기도 했는데 세월이 훌쩍 지나갔네요~~
This makes me remember the last scene of the movie Shawshank Redemption.
I believe Greyhound called the MC-6 the Americruiser, and it replaced the legendary Scienicruiser.
The MC-6 was called the SuperCruiser. The Americruiser first came out in the mid-1970s with the MC-8.

Thanks for the comment 😀 👍
I’m 37 and remember riding one of these! Wow!
Haha really you know these buses are from 1970!
Very cool and beautiful.🇺🇸
I went from miami beach to disneyworld in one of these
