- Luke heads to Silverstone to test Yamaha’s new flagship superbike, the 2015 YZF-R1, and pits it up against a highly modified R1 with over £5,000 worth of goodies bolted on, including: an Akrapovic exhaust, Ohlins suspension and super sticky Pirelli Supercorsa tyres!
This was an awesome video, comparison and review of an even more incredible bike! Thanks for making this video!
That Akrapovic Muffler looks hideous on that bike. Its a cool muffler but totally not matched for the bike.
Themayseffect exactly! The slipon looks so much better
Great video, really enjoyed it!
CGD217 Thanks!
jerryx2000 We'll find out for you Jerry!
Great review and great video. I'm glad to see the R1 becoming more like the M1.
Man I thought it was an earlier gen R1 with 5k of mods, didn't realize till a minute before the end of the video that that was the modded one mentioned in the title. Was excited to see that comparison.
Great review man, I really enjoyed it!
Excellent review and very thorough
Brilliant review, everything was done professionally and very well presented. Keep at it guys.
You've never seen the rear section of a seat with a straight through air gap? Have a look at the panigale mate ;)
Dougie Thank you! Was just thinking that..and he calls himself a motorbike journalist..
According to twist of the wrist what you are saying at 7:30 isnt right. When you get on the gas hard, the rear shock stiffens and doesnt compress, thus the light feeling is not caused by the rear squating. I reckon that it is just from the accelaration combined with 'bad' low-speed compression damping.
He is saying the rear shock is too soft, so it squats and makes the front too light
+NUCK CHORRIS Can u explain this or gives some links.
+NUCK CHORRIS maybe u can give a link to the "twist of the wrist" video timline, where they are saying this.
You just need to rely on the LIF, its gonna feel kinda light coming out of some of those corners when you go to pin it but the LIF is gonna take care of you. It takes time but once you start letting it do its job your lap times will drop significantly.
Very Nice video!
Great video
Cat delete and an ecu flash completely wake up this bike i love mine !!!
Awesome video, I'm still a fan of the older bikes 2005-2009. they are more of a raw Super sport, Same HP less Electronics. I don't have to spend my next 3 pay checks buying specialty equipment to work on my bike.
Enjoyed the review, good stuff! Thanks!
@3:58 your helmet wasn't done up?
2:32 never seen a open tail like that on a bike before? Please direct your gaze to the Ducati Panigale, which debuted a similar design in 2011. In fact the brake lights look better because they follow the lines of the vents, unlike the simple vertical LED on the R1.
that akrapovic full system looks really ugly!!!!
this bike is just so tempting.. i would prefer bikes with great handling than those with massive horsepower bcoz going around a corner with a bike thats so easy to handle is so much fun than going hella fast and end up in the metal barrier
Awesome video. Great review, Luke! Not about to shove 5K upgrades on a bike. But, eh...someone else might.
That Fireblade at 2:10, still my dream bike!!
@2:31 the panigale has the straight through seat part
Your my new favourite motorcycle reviewer, also, love the R1
The blue modded R1 would make an excellent desktop background, link for hi-res photos??
can you guys do a review on the s1000rr
Out of curiosity is the Blue R1, tuned? I would assume it would be making a little more HP than the Red R1?
Nice review!
Keith Bartlett Cheers Keith!
Hey bro how much does it cost for everything you put on your R1. I want to do the exact thing but I want to do it all at once. How much did u pay for everything bro
Are there any differences between the 2015 R1 and the 2016 R1? I'm going in on tuesday to buy a 2015 R1 but am willing to spend the extra $$$ if the 2016 R1 has something to offer... But I can't find any differences except a minor decal change on the front of the bike and the transmission issue ( Which will be fixed if i buy the 2015 model).
Yeah the 15 is faster the 16 models are S models cheaper get the 15 if you ask me
99% of riders would no why they need that next level of performance...
Well done video. I wish I had known the R1M was going to be limited production, I would have preordered. I suppose I'll just wait and see what suzuki brings to the table next year; for now, I'm content with the motorcycles I already have.
Post vids of yu on your bikes man
does it need a fuel controller with a full system?
you could get a power commander. But i've been doing some research and i think another option is an active tune kit and a remapping. remap the bike and adjust AFR in the gearing and then use in conjunction with a wide band O2 sensor which then adjusts the bikes mapping as you go along.
baz bazz so an ECU flash with a bazzaz self mapper? they look awesome! in Australia cops are very picky about noise. would get pulled over before I hot 7000rpm.
The kit i am looking at is a Ftech Active tune/Flash tune kit
Good Review! Subscribed! R1M for me someday?!
That exhaust sounds soooo mean. I'm sure it sounds far better in person too.
I can't believe a 3 second gap. I think you improved your lap by a 1 to 1.5 sec margin.
great review very impressed with your professionalism but the say nitty gritty was quite upsetting to some olders members of my family and think you shouldn't use that saying anymore. To be honest i don't care but I promised to mention it so please forgive me I'm trying to be nob, anyway great riding great review, also most humans can't ride 1000cc to their full potential but you really done good job.
Look at those chicken strips good lord.. I like my half inch of untouched edge lol
That's probably the nicest looking Akropovic I've seen but as others have mentioned, on a supersports, it is absolutely hideous. More suited on a sports tourer IMO.
Gimme a shorty pipe any day!
ECU reflash. It'd solve the hiccup getting on the throttle. And then it'd blow your nuts off as it drives out of the corner. Crazy bike...
How the frig did you not notice a difference dropping that 7kg cat off of the bike!!? Also how are the brakes mint? That's one of the most common gripes with this model of R1 is that they dont have enough bite. Also if you were tracking why wouldn't you change fork cartridges and rear shock? How would they not make you go quicker? The rear shock heats up way too fast after about 5 laps. You ent got a scooby doo mate.
im reeeeaaallly not feeling that exhaust upgrade look.
That exhaust is horrible looking!
Christian S Looks like a snake, a black mamba or something, not sure if I like it or not, looks strange. but I think I don't.
Christian S yup i was expecting akra would come out something that is as short as the stock exhaust or even shorter but this one reminds me of bikes in the 90's.. but i guess its all about the power u get from the long muffler
Christian S I'd go with the Graves
Can't agree more...The slip on one is so much better looking, more like the look of the M1 exhaust.
Really good vid thank you :o)
That Exhaust looks like a Whales D!
Regardless, addressing the camera/people wearing mirrored glasses comes across as rude to me.
I certainly would not stand and listen to someone talk to me in real life wearing them.
I wear Oakley myself, and that did not make me want to go buy some.
+Matt M There is a practical reason for it also Matt. To get the best light we have to shoot with the sun behind the camera. Also, most of the talking bits are done early in the morning or later in the evening so the sun is right in the presenters eyes...
what a shitty thing to complain about. are you here for the bikes or not?
You sound unhappy mate. Get well soon.
Good vid tho I enjoyed it!
Sounds like a muscle car
200 horsepower my ass! this thing hit 167 hp on the dyno. The 15 Bmw s 1000rr claims 199 at the crank and on the dyno hit 182. The acceleration of the Yamaha is no match for the Bmw. I am disappointed in the lack of power from the Yamaha. Come on Yamaha get your head out of your ass!
The American one is restricted. The hints that this isn't the shitty restricted US version are all over the video.
A guy on rhe r1 forum posted his dyno results with a tune and his is 200.9
Also keep in mind the josh hayes 2014 graves r1race bike was only putting out what this bike does stock.
ECU Flash and you have the hp up there.
Bruce Wayne
.
For that much $$$$ in upgrades just get the R1M????? EASY!!!!
Youre still stuck with buying an exhaust. Which is way over a grand. That ugly thing in the video is over 2 grand
Lol
+blue03r6 you don't really need a full exhaust, all you need is a mid pipe and you have a full unrestricted exhaust.
That slip on looks poor, very poor. Way too long! Sounds the business though.
Nice! Subscribed.
Exhaust looks like a giant leech..
That akrapovic.... :/ is it just me?
No it's Fugly
Wearing those glasses was a bad idea, I find it almost rude.
+Matt M Have you not thought that we might be sponsored by Oakley Matt...
UH-CROP-A-VICH
Well i need to know this, is chris northover not doing your reviews anymore?
bcause if thats the case, i need to unsubscribe
ThMxy He'll be back with us at some point, he's taken a job working at an off road school in Wales. So best unsubscribe then!
ThMxy What an obnoxious thing to say. Organisations like Bike World rely on more than just one person, and I'm very much enjoying the videos.
Chris Doms i can tell you that i see top gear for one reason, and is not only for the cars, same here
Chris Doms Thanks Chris!
This exhaust is so ugly that it hurts my eyes.
I was also thinking that it's ugly, but now i like how it looks. Because everyone has titanium Akra on their bikes and carbon one is very rare.
Р1$$$;)
Look at my R1 , looks better than both of this..
I'm rather disappointed in the bike you fail to mention on normal roads it's horrible this bike is 90% made for a track also for a 1000cc it doesn't sound very nice I've heard 600's sound nicer, a BMW s1000rr is faster than this R1 not to mention a H2! A H2 is the only stock 1000 to do 1/4 in 9seconds the rest such as a r1 or the BMW do it in just over 10seconds so no this is not unlike anything you've ever ridden before... I've never liked R1's only ever liked the R6 from Yamaha
So would you recommend the older r1 over this 2015 model? I'm looking to get a liter bike that isnt too track oriented.
+DoridianBlueprint Viktor yes if you want a 1000 then I'd recommend the older R1 by a mile this bike is not made for everyday traffic use trust me
+taylor gear What about the ducati panigale 899?
+Livingroom PinkieToe I Have the 15 R1 and a 1199 both are just made for the track. Road use they hurt after a while.
+taylor gear right, this is a horrible street bike
however their is a 2016 R1s which is coming , which will hopefully be competent on road.
it will be cheaper and forfeit the magnesium engine covers, titanium rods, quick shifter( Yamaha said it will be easy to add as an accessory).
It will have the same engine chassis and electronics ( It will not even wear an R1s badge but just R1)
This bike sounds very good with a project sc exhaust, or even a link pipe with stock exhaust. (/Arguably the best sounding inline 4 bike by a long ways.
Next to the rsv4 and motogp bikes in terms sound this is up there.
the cross plane crank engine note alone sells the R1,
( have you ever heard one in person? it even comes through well on crap speakers)
much better than any normal inline 4( I hate regular inline 4 sound, they all sound the exact same way no matter what)
the 2014 r1 is a dreadful motorcycle, ugly and handles like an old Cadillac.
Now I want this overpriced R1. I want it bad. It's gonna cost nearly $19k otd. Dammit.
