Very well-made video. My prediction for future SMB real-time speedrunning would be frame war in 8-4. I don't think trying that 8-1 framerule save in a real run is possible unless we have a robotic-precision input player someday. My 4-2 framerule save solution is also not feasible in a real run, but would be fun to see someone actually go for it. It requires no more frame-perfect inputs than the 8-1 framerule save. That "releasing right for 1 frame" approach is how I calculated to do that wall clip perfectly, but one can do it slightly less perfectly because unlike 8-1, you'll have 3 frames to spare (or more with backward acceleration).
@@Bismuth9 Even if the pipe entry was slower, one can maybe choose to gain more frames to spare with backward acceleration. The hardest part is the corner clip, but the good news is it's right from the beginning, so one can try thousands of times with it and hopefully maybe succeed once in a while.
I found out by reproducing the inputs to get a smooth capture and a timeline to display inputs correctly. It's definitely not happening in a real run, and to think it would be required for 4:54...
Is there any chance you could provide us with a set of inputs which is more user-friendly but has 0 frames to spare? Also could you point out the parts of your current 4-2 solution that must be frame perfect?
That's actually the easiest part of fpg. You basically just do the second input slightly after the first one, almost as fast as you can (almost to avoid jumping one frame later). It gets into muscle memory really quick, so that you almost always get the second frame-perfect input when you get the first one.
Sub 1 minute could legit be possible if arbitrary code execution is found. That's how games like pokemon red, ocarina of time and super mario world have extremely short speedruns with absolutely gamebreaking shit like warp to credits.

Congratulations on a brilliantly produced, detailed (boy is it detailed!), and above all captivating video 💯 - have you considered making a ‘proper’ documentary out of all of this, as in a feature? al la ‘King of Kong’? if you could find a ‘human’ angle, perhaps interviews and puff pieces about the players - a history of the game and speed play, interviews with friends, other speed play games and how this is the hardest/ finest margins, you might have enough to interest producers etc? You’ve done the hard work of research etc 🏸 bet you could even crowd fund it. Anyway thanks for a fascinating hour 🤙 peace 🇬🇧

@@johnjosmith42 That's a really nice way to put it! I agree, the speedrunning community is wholly underrated. It combines the perseverance required in an athletic competition with the human ingenuity of, say, the Space Race, of great minds working together to discover great things. Sadly, unlike athletes or celebrities, speedrunners go unrecognized for their feats outside of gaming internet forums because no one really understands the effort that goes into achieving them. Hopefully we'll see an aspiring filmmaker tackle a project like this in the future. These people deserve to be represented on the big screen for their hard work. At least, videos like these are a start.

A different but related community to follow would be the "challenge" community, in which people attempt to beat video games under some kind of self-imposed restriction, such as completing a Mario game without collecting coins or beating a boxing game without defending. These videos might not interest you as much if you're more interested in the competitive element of speedrunning. They're often more detailed and biographical in nature. However, I think they're just as fascinating and worth giving a shot. 4:54 is officially viable! The 8-2 TAS framerule, which for many months was extremely insanely difficult, now has a setup! Its still very hard , but its as easy as 8-1 framerule! People have already saved those two framerules back to back (8-1 and 8-2) making 4:54 easier than ever! (But still really difficult to achieve)

Sadly, I do know what that’s like. I spent a whole month grinding a boss in Sonic Rush (the Altitude Limit Zone boss) to get a world record time with Blaze, and another month to do it again with Sonic, only to have the Sonic run beaten the exact same day I posted it, and the Blaze run beaten mere days later. I wanted to break things.
Tetra Sky it definitely wasn’t only 9 attempts. I watched him attempting this before using the new methods and he had done it thousands and thousands of times
For moving ghosts, I superposed both videos and edited them frame by frame so the background would be lined up. For the infographic at the end, I used the 4:54.03 TAS and calculated the correct frame to display for each of the slower times, edited the TAS so that Mario would always be shown on the ground except when he touches the axe, took screenshots, and lined them up with Photoshop.

Imagine this from the perspective of a goomba or a koopa- Bowser kidnaps the princess and within minutes this crazy Italian plumber just comes rocketing past, dodging or destroying everything in his path, heading straight for Boswer's castle. There's a blur and a "mama mia" and he's gone. Then, in the castle, Bowser's just gotten back with the princess and there's this incredible commotion as the plumber just whooshes around every obstacle they spent weeks building, past all the highly trained minions, Bowser's elite generals, and storms into his personal quarters, dropping the bridge right from under his feet and sending him to a fiery end in the lava below. Before Bowser even has time to realize what is happening his plan is completely annihilated
True, now go back and really read the description of the original game, think of all you just said, and realize that mario is the villain and the bad guy just dropped the pwn hammer on an entire kingdoms defenses in minutes.

I'm not even into speed running, but I loved this game, and I love seeing that people still play it. This was fascinating and I watched the whole thing and I don't know why.
I never had any interest in speedrunning, but started coming across stuff like this, and became a big fan of the community. I don't think I'm going to be doing any of this myself, but it's fun to watch.

The video literally explained that there are more ways to save frames thanks to the TAS but not all are allowed, possible, have been attempted, or have an extremely low chance of even happening.

It's pretty awesome how this video, despite only being less than two years old, is already incredibly outdated. TAS 8-2 is easier than pl8-1 now and VERY viable for runs. Hopefully we'll see a 4:54 in the next year or two

speedrunning is not hard, it is beating the game in the fastest way possible, so as long as u can beat the game and u do it as fast as YOU can, its a speedrun

imagine playing the same game, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over times 6xxx again... just for some dude to beat you in only 9 attempts... Ouch.
Sadly, I do know what that’s like. I spent a whole month grinding a boss in Sonic Rush (the Altitude Limit Zone boss) to get a world record time with Blaze, and another month to do it again with Sonic, only to have the Sonic run beaten the exact same day I posted it, and the Blaze run beaten mere days later. I wanted to break things.
Wasn't really "only 9 attempts". He had been playing the game for years.. just wasn't going for certain tricks.

For moving ghosts, I superposed both videos and edited them frame by frame so the background would be lined up.
For the infographic at the end, I used the 4:54.03 TAS and calculated the correct frame to display for each of the slower times, edited the TAS so that Mario would always be shown on the ground except when he touches the axe, took screenshots, and lined them up with Photoshop.

I'm not even into speed running, but I loved this game, and I love seeing that people still play it. This was fascinating and I watched the whole thing and I don't know why.
I never had any interest in speedrunning, but started coming across stuff like this, and became a big fan of the community. I don't think I'm going to be doing any of this myself, but it's fun to watch.
You should watch Summoning Salt's speedrun series, they are also top notch.

BREAKING: Kosmicd12 took the record back today with a 4:55.646. He beat tavenwebb2002's record by six frames, or a tenth of a second. Notably, the 8-4 in the run was the first one that was faster than a perfect 8-4 with no fast accelerations to be performed at the end of a world record run. (by five frames)

It's pretty awesome how this video, despite only being less than two years old, is already incredibly outdated. TAS 8-2 is easier than pl8-1 now and VERY viable for runs. Hopefully we'll see a 4:54 in the next year or two
