- After forever, I'm finally back with a new video! Don't believe the hype from other makers telling you how they created a level that's impossible to beat! Here, I show how I managed to upload a level that's literally impossible to clear from the checkpoint using simple logic - no glitches and no hacks. It was a very fun problem to work on, and I'm sure others will find even more interesting ways to use it. As for me, I just liked the puzzle aspect of solving this challenge.

Wow... Thank you all so much for the support. This 8-month-old video blew up in a way I never saw coming. Frankly, it's overwhelming. Watching the numbers climb has been a wild experience for me.
I've been reading a lot of the comments, but haven't gotten through all of them. I do plan to read each and every one. But there are certainly themes these questions take, and I think here is probably the best place to address them. So: here are my answers to some of the most common questions, starting with by far the most common:
Q1: Your voice is too quiet! Speak up!
A1: Excellent question! I 100% agree. This was the first video where I used my voice, so it was experimental in a way. It was also my first time using actual editing software, so there was a pretty steep learning curve there. I struggled with the audio mixing for a while, and I got it to a point where I felt it was "good enough." Clearly it wasn't, and so this is an aspect I'll need to pay far more attention to in the future in addition to getting my ears checked.
Q2: This isn't actually impossible from the checkpoint; (person) managed to clear it.
A2: First of all, (person) is one of my favorite people; kudos to (person). And you're right - this level isn't impossible. It turns out there are quite a few ways to break the level. It's possible I may even get around to detailing these methods of cheese...
Q3: Those are red coins! They aren't pink! They don't even look pink!
A3: This... bothered a lot more people than I expected. I think we need to gather up all the complaints and send them to Nintendo. They certainly look red to my eye. But when you place elements in the editor, a sound plays. This sound is actually a voice (warped to fit the background music) that says the name of the element you're placing. So you'll hear "Koopa Troopa" or "Ground Block." Or, when placing these coins, you'll hear "Pink Coin." I assume this is because red coins already serve a purpose in other Mario games, but this is still a travesty - they're clearly red in color if not in name. So after I get my ears checked, we'll all petition to get Nintendo's eyes checked.
Q4: Why can't you just hit the goal tape instead of falling down the hole?
A4: And miss out on the juicy treasure?! Preposterous!
Q5: ...
A5: Okay, okay, the reason I built the level in this way is so that anyone getting this level in 100-man isn't going to become hopelessly stuck. It's sort of a mean trick to play on unsuspecting players, and so I wanted only people who consciously made the decision to see this trick. In theory, it allows me to upload this video and the level without getting a bunch of 100-man hate.
Q6: Are you making any more videos?
A6: I do have plans, yes. But as a warning, it will be a slow process. It turns out capturing footage, recording lines, and editing takes a lot of time, and I have a job and other obligations that demand a lot of my time. But after seeing the support I've gotten, I'd really like to do more. As a first step, I want to detail the cheese that the community has found, as well as show how I can edit my level to prevent the cheese and possibly create a True Version of the level. But I can't promise it'll be a speedy process.

Thanks! Getting to this point was a long process, but it feels good to have actually pulled it off. For a while I didn't think it would actually be possible, but I kept thinking about it anyway during my drives to work. Pink coin mechanics have always fascinated me.

9:38 My guess is the developers wanted the Pink Coins to act like the Star Coins from the New Super Mario Bros. series, due to their similar functionality. Any Star Coins you grabbed before touching the checkpoint, as long as you don't clear the level or quit the level and go to another one, will be saved so you don't have to grab them again.
Ahh.. the memories of trying to recreate this level on Mario Maker 3DS and failing when I was young.

Thanks Dan! The editing certainly took a lot of work, and this was my first video using Lightworks. Hopefully future videos like this don't take as much time now that I know the tools. I'd like to create more videos like this occasionally.

So I have actually never told this to anyone, but back when mario maker was very new, I made an awesome don't touch anything level (automatic level). The level worked perfectly so I was able to upload it. But later Nintendo released an update that for some reason changed the way noteblocks worked. Because of this change, my level was now impossible. and not just really hard. no it was truly an IMPOSSIBLE level. However I removed it from online simply because I thought I might be banned from the game for having it uploaded.

hoagie Thanks! It's something I just had a lot of fun puzzling out. Almost gave up on it before coming up with the Yoshi and coin idea, then it took a while longer to figure out a setup where it would work. And the video was fun (if not time-consuming) to create.

Almost 2 years late, but I love how you made it quite easy to understand, even if you have NEVER played any Mario games, or Mario Maker.
How can someone physically be smart enough to put this much precise detail in a short mario level. I am amazed. Keep up the effort!

Have you considered creating an actual troll level around this idea? Where the player will inevitably die post-checkpoint and have to continue from there, without realizing their mistake?

Yet it’s still possible. Aurateur beat it after taking the pow with yoshi I’m fairly sure. He bounced it on yoshis head, jumped off and picked it up mid jump.

So when uploading levels from checkpoints it always starts you there with no red coins, where as playing the level normally it will save your red coins progress, which made this possible?
That's exactly right. One of the coins is also locked away, so you can't ever reset your coins back to 0.

I figured it out somewhat quickly, (probably by watching and playing too many one screen puzzles) but by using a different method. If you hold up while sticking out Yoshi's tongue, then Yoshi will stick out his tongue at Mario's height, or 1 block above the pow block. Then you wouldn't swallow the pow block and you could beat it.
But then you'd go through the door.
What if you held the Up button while entering the door?
You can't tongue with Yoshi while entering doors.
Toad R0XMK He's saying holding up as you go through the door the first time so that when your out of the door you can tongue with Yoshi while holding up
You will still go back in the door if you hold up while coming out.

The volume is far from fine. Voice volume is ~15% too low to begin with, and the "background" music is overpowering it.

Welp, time to make a variant of this level in SMM2
The problem is that ground physics are different in MM2. In MM, you can move and jump in ground and will be ejected if possible. But if you try in MM2, Mario (or whoever you play as) wont be ejected, and cant jump or move. He just gets stuck in a crouch and cant do anything. This means if you place EVERY single block in the level exactly the same, when Mario dies, he will get stuck in the block. Unlike MM, where you would be ejected. These new physics are likely because Nintendo noticed them and wanted to patch them.

Drop the POW gently spin jump on Yoshi after and take the POW mid air.
You can make an impossible level currently with a red coin in the sub world one in the over world you’re forced to get and a forced key door enter. Make sure there are no pipes in the sub world, just a red coin. Uploading won’t give you the key, but after it’s uploaded the red coin in the sub world seems to not exist forcing the player to get a key with the over world red coin and have to enter the key door. I just wrote a sequel to the dictionary.
That works until the player connects the key and then times out, causing key death

Another way to make an impossible level is through the fact that whoever creates a level in SMB1 style can't get the 10% lanky mushroom chance from regular mushrooms. Using this, you can make a FULLY impossble level setup.
Not impossible. It's just that you have an extremely low chance of beating it.
Hence him saying "no bugs or glitches."

Edit: its not a bug or glitch. Its an intended feature in the game that you have a chance of getting the lanky shroom when playing, but not when uploading. Its an exploit of this feature
Toad R0XMK, oh yeah. Forgot about that. To be fair though, if done correctly, it would have like a .0001% chance so it's still pretty unlikely, but it's not TRULY impossible. Thanks!
You make a level that is only beatable without lanky, then give the player enough mushrooms to ensure that they get the lankmeister, making it so they can't pass the level.
I get the hint, so first to verify the level you have to complete with no checkpoints, and you collect the one pink coin, then you complete the level.The level restarts but you have to complete it from the checkpoint, since you have already completed the level the pink coin you previously collected reappears, so you can do the backwards yoshi glitch with the pink coin instead of the pow block and use the pow block to go through the door.

Until you showed the coin not having been collected at start from checkpoint, and it being in the way of the pow, I had no clue how to get through. This is an amazing exploit!
