I agree!! This video is a PERFECT!!! example of everything that goes into speed runs.. If you ever wanted to know why there is a MASSIVE scene around speed running then this video would explain just that..
Newton's Third Law: "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." Indeed, if you make contact with a wall and immediately begin to move away from it, the equal and opposite reaction would be the wall pulling you in.
Dog I'd be flattered. Wait, in this hypothetical scenario, do I assume all of Princess Peach's former memories and thus accept that I was always her? And is this in the context of their universe or ours? If the latter, I am in that case just a line of code and am not sentient. If the former, which is pretty much just assumed already from the get-go, then do I also take on her personality? Given her lackluster reaction at her rescue by the end of the game, I'd think she wasn't actually relieved that Mario had rescued her and was either being sarcastic or didn't care in the first place.
This was actually enlightening on the amount of time, practice, but most of all, research, that goes into speed running. Before today, if you told me someone told that some guy spent several months looking into super Mario bros in order to beat a record by 0.00.066 secs (or whatever unit of timing it was) I wouldn't be too impressed, but after seeing the amount of work done behind the scenes, only for it completely fly over the heads of all the casuals watching (myself included), this definitely changed my viewpoint towards speedrunners. And the craziest thing is that they usually just act like it's all fun and games. SERIOUSLY, that guy was (including, not limited to); a frame away from missing his "bus" a pixel away from fucking up the final level had whether or not he could take it easy decided by a single white pixel And after all of that whether could even make it past bowser's hammer was determined completely by LUCK, the final milliseconds of a perfect run could of been completely annihilated by some bad luck and the guy was just casually smiling the whole way through. People are constantly asking if speed running counts as a legitimate sport but speed runners have to be one of the most patient, enduring and hard working people I've ever heard of. So to all speed runners out there, I SALUTE YOU, for all the hard work you've done to entertain the minority that understands. Keep on running.
This is the first video that blew my mind in the same manner you described First the video of the trick: ruclips.net/video/X-zAWbM50JM/видео.html Then the explanation: ruclips.net/video/kpk2tdsPh0A/видео.html
I understand the mechanics, I understand how much work goes into these speedruns and how much knowledge you need to do them. That said, you're just playing a game slightly faster than someone else so
Yeah, but the amount of time and effort put into ensuring they are able to play faster is outstanding, it's like saying Usain Bolt just runs faster than everyone else, technically it's true, but we don't respect him for running so fast, we respect him for putting in the work so he could run so fast, and it's no different with speedrunners
@@shinobix4925 using less time to go from A to B in a game is not the same as running. The right comparison is someone being able to read a book faster than you. Probably takes skill yeah but I wouldn't understand why they would train for that, it's cool and all. They can keep on reading the same book slightly faster but I'm just gonna move on to another book when I'm done, they can keep beating me by minutes with the same book.
You forgot to mention by Kosmic shitting twice during the morning at exactly 6:07:53 AM and 7:54:23 AM, He changed the 2nd Goomba movement pattern, delaying it by 2 frames at level 1-2, thus saving him 3 frames at the Flag Pole at level 8-3
You all missed the most obvious one, Kosmic skipped dinner 1 month and 3 days before the run, thus changing the 4th goomba's pattern on level 4-1, which delayed the bus by 2 frames thus barely saving him a framerule.
When I first opened this I scoffed to myself "a 27 minute video for a 4:55 run?" and then watched the entire fucking thing because it was riveting. Fantastic work man.
I wasn't prepared for the Bowser hammers spreadsheet. Is it even possible to do something more niche than that ? These guys are insane... in a brilliant way.
Mario 64 Watch for Rolling Rocks in 0.5x A Presses is probably more niche. It's not a speed thing, but there's more math. ruclips.net/video/kpk2tdsPh0A/видео.html
msec Ses You are looking at this the wrong way, maybe you consider success being let's say basketball world champion (just for example). So if somebody sees being supermario speedrun world champion in the exact same way in which you see being basketball world champion, then he isnt wasting life, he is fulfilling it just in the way in which you wish to fulfill it. Bottomline he is more successful than you and he has wasted less life than you bcz he is supermario world champion and you are not basketball world champion (again for example).
msec Ses We can't exactly predict what outcomes are productive and will directly contribute to human development/fulfillment. You're assuming that this pursuit is something that can't lead someone to/inspire them to contribute something major to our universe. Your foresight is limited.
Summoning salt I'm so glad u started this genre at lest I think u started the speedrun history video I love them all and you've inspired a lot of smaller channels as well thanks RUclips needs a nice community
I don't know if you guys knew, but these super human players have "sprite vision" where they can actually see the green hit-boxes with their naked eyes. tsk tsk
I just wanna take a moment to draw attention to the video ending, which is one of many strokes of genius contained in this video, and proof that we're dealing with an amazing content creator. Thanks for the video, it's truly impressive.
You’re one of my favorite streamers and you’re a great source of entertainment (I was going through a hard time awhile back and you always made me smile.) anyway, thank you darb :).
Nearly every step in this run is the kind of thing I would expect to hear about in a TAS run. That they're doing this in a human run, and talking about shaving individual frames off their run times... it's crazy to think about that level of precision.
truly you have to be able to see the matrix to understand all this stuff, and to execute it perfectly in fluid gameplay you have to be in control of the matrix.
We’ve got to a point where we are beating records by FRAMES. Edit: I mean by small amounts of frames. I’m implying that to measure it you have to use frames. I get that 10 seconds could be 600 frames but that’s not what I mean
what's really crazy to think about is that there has to be a limit to all this... eventually someone is going to hit it - and then others will follow - and then NO ONE will ever break that record again. The person who hits those records is really going to go down in video game history...
Not for most games. If you watch some of the longer games that have speedruns they're not sweating individual frames, they're sweating seconds or minutes. And games with more random elements can really change things too.
and the most amazing thing from this explanation was that this current record could only theoretically be beaten by 62 more frames through all game... Talk about narrow margin, I bet James Bond couldn't do nothing in this case.
After the pannenkoek File Select theme at 1:26, I knew this would be a good video; but you blew my expectations out of the water with this explanation! I learned so much about SMB speedruns today. Thank you so much! Definitely subscribing :)
honestly explained so much about my time playing SMB as a kid. Specifically bowsers last hammer not having a hit box and 8-3 hammer bros patterns having an easy patter.
Incredible video. It's obvious that a lot of time went into gathering info and editing. The animations and clear descriptions should help any view understand exactly what's going on. Plus it's fascinating to see just how much goes into a fairly short run. Thanks for making this; hopefully it answers all the questions any person would have about the wr.
I had totally forgotten about Nintendo Power, I am pretty sure I still have some of them in a box somewhere with stuff from my childhood I took with me when I left home over 25 years ago.
I'm going for the Worlds Slowest Speedrun for Super Mario. I bought the game some 20-odd years ago and have yet to open the packet. I believe so far I am leading the race.
Amazing video, Bismuth! You clearly explained all the techniques and tricks with great editing and examples. I'm sure this will help new viewers to SMB1 speedruns understand just how insanely technical runs for this game have become.
For sure. I thought the run was complicated, but after watching this video, and to use the technical words here, I understand now that it's pretty much fucking insane.
I have utterly no interest in Super Mario. I haven't played it in at least 30 years. I'm saying that so you'll understand when I say that this video is absolutely fascinating. I can't stop watching it.

@@KoniRose What's "more fun" is subjective. Personally, I've never enjoyed speedrunning myself, but it's fun to watch. Regardless, people can enjoy this game however they want.
@@Phobos_Anomaly However, sadly, many video game speedrunners stop enjoying a game after a certain point. But on their first run, their intent isn't to go and beat the game as fast as possible, is it? So I guess they did like the game at first, it just lost its luster for them.
Speedrunners don't stop enjoying the game, but the enjoyment is different. You can't play a game casually for years, but by speedrunning, you can play it and enjoy it for an infinite amount of time. In a way, speedrunners enjoy a game more than anyone else.
Yeah Summoning Salt is a best channel for these kinda things, and there's been loads of copycat channels that have popped up trying to replicate summoning salt, like this one. Nothing inherently wrong with that, the more great videos made about speedrunning the better, but so many of these channels try and have very similar thumbnails to Summoning Salt to trick you into thinking its a video by him, which is a very scummy thing to do, after all the work Summoning Salt does to make his videos
27minutes just flew by you earned my sub that was great , speed running makes me wonder how FPS and TPS will be played in 20-30 years it’s gonna be nuts.
Hey, I just wanted to say that you did a PHENOMENAL job explaining everything and I’d love to see more of these! This whole video is well put together, well thought-out, explained in a way that makes sense and is easily understood. I love it!!! ^^
I wonder if most people watching this are at least hobbyist speed runners, but I have very little exposure to it and to me this is absolutely, balls-out insane. I had seen speed runs before and just figured these players were really good with good reaction times, etc. I had no idea all of these tiny, frame- and pixel-perfect timings were being made based on what would look like nothing to most people.
As Bismuth said, its kind of game dependent, D2 for instance, still has SO much room to improve its speed runs. Watched one a few months back, and i was laughing at how they missed some tricks i know from back when i played a TON. Im pretty sure i could beat the current world record for assassin by 10+ minutes if i reinstalled and practiced up a bit(i havent played d2 in a LONG time). Partially this is from knowing i hit near those times WITHOUT "speedrunning" i was just leveling fast to get to end game, so i never sat down to try and get it to the shortest time possible, but i have multiple times taken multiple characters through end game in a day. Part of it is also based off of things i knew but never really used, and havent seen used in a speed run, that would save a lot of time for anyone. Case in point: if you get "lucky" you can get a teleport staff at level 18 from vendor in act 1. teleport can save you HUGE amounts of time in a run. hence why speed runs are broken down by class. What that means is that any class(except sorc) can save many minutes on that trick alone, and i never see them even TRY to buy the staff. they dont even check to see if one is available, which is to me, insane. And thats just ONE trick i know of that i havent seen used.
You don't often see such high quality, informative videos such as this one.Simply amazing video.Even though it's extremely detailed, the way you presented it was so captivating!
3 years later, 4:55:580 has not only been achieved, but is completely obselete. Thanks to Niftski, the first 4:54:XXX is reality. As Bismuth said, "the limits are never where we expect them to be".
Have a look at Summoning Salt's channel if you like this sort of content - he shows the history of many speedrunning world records while breaking down what happens as he goes along
Fantastic explanation. I've been watching speed running lately and am totally intrigued by the whole thing. It completely baffles me how these pixel tricks are thought up! Thanks for answering all the questions I didn't even know I had!
So basically if you sleep at a 37 degree angle while keeping both your hands under your shirt and legs stuck together, you will be able to save several frames while pooping, am I right?
If you check out Summoning Salt's videos, he talks about the history of various speedrunning records, and it only gets like this after *many* world records. Some early world records in other games actually have a death or two in them. It's only as the time gets lower and lower do you have to start being extremely precise to break someone else's record. Things were a lot less precise when speedrunners had an extra 15 seconds to work with. Here's his video on this game in this category (which is almost four years old and is thus a little outdated on the current record): ruclips.net/video/RdAkY7RfajY/видео.html
"When Nintendo sends its characters, they're not sending their best. They're not sending Toad. They're not sending Luigi. They're sending characters that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing Shrooms. They're bringing Chain Chomps. They're mean and ugly. And some, I assume, are good characters."
I rarely comment on RUclips videos. However I just wanted to say, this is probably one of the BEST videos I´ve ever seen. It has the perfect balance of Nerdhood, Geekness and Engineering. The result: an epic 27 minutes... Thank You....
Thank you for making this video. I never in a million years would of imagined how hard and technical this world record stuff was. I had no idea about frame inputs and all the other stuff that goes into it. I thought it was as simple as running through the level the fastest. Boy was I wrong. These world record holders are basically math geniuses. Thanks again. I have the upmost respect for these guys and yourself. You have to be a math wiz to make this video plus you have to be good at editing and narrating and I appreciate your skills as well.
What do you mean "used to"? They still do. And many of them have played this game because they have old Nintendos hooked up to generators on TV's they restored from a junkyard.
I was never a Mario fan but damn this is VERY impressive. The amount of time, nerves and strategy spent to beat the world record...truly amazing. Every time you started explaining how all those moves were possible,I kept being more and more impressed. Plus I learned something new about games today,so I thank you kind sir.
Amazing. As a Computer Scientist and Engineer it is extremely interesting for me to learn about the internal mechanisms of such a classic game. It gives you a whole different kind of appreciation for it !!
It makes me lose appreciation for it. Much of these tricks depend on aspects of the code that seem more "hack" than anything else. I guess in the end if your game works though you call it a good day.
I just wanted to add another comment complimenting you on your ability to make this speed run easily understandable! I'm very much a casual gamer and have never paid any attention to the WR scene or even really to glitches... so thank you for explaining everything so clearly that even a novice like me could understand!
I'm a customer facing R&D engineer and manager for a medical device company. Not ashamed to admit I favorited this video so I can refer back to it as an example of awesome structure for giving technical presentations. NICELY DONE.
I am also impressed with the seemingly simple techniques to present the fine technical details of the game. I am also watching this with my mouth gaping open part of the time at the startling level of dedication... just no idea something like this would be so involved. My only critique would be the non-explanation of the "judges" and their good/bad moods (unless this is voodoo unknown to all except maybe one of the original programmers), but this was A+ stuff. I don't know why this was suggested, but entertaining.
@Ryan Otte No one understands the "Judges" and their moods. It's basically a random element that no can figure out. Which is why they were named the judges, their approval SEEMS to be completely arbitrary, just like RUclips's recommendation algorithm lol.
@MutinyVT Haha, that is funny that nobody knows why the "Judges" behave in the way they do. What a strange little quirk in what most assume is a relatively simple program. A single dot color can make a difference. Crazy.
I gloss over it a bit to not go into useless details, but it depends on the frame you enter the pipe in 4-2. Say you enter on frame x, you get good judges, frame x+1, you get bad, frame x+2, you get good, frame x+3, you get bad again, etc. This is still a simplification, but that's the general idea. It depends on the frame you enter the pipe in 4-2, and it is basically impossible to control.
This video is uncanny in that it connected so many dots for me. Watching obscure speedruns I always noticed really odd behavior like momentary pauses, facing the character the wrong way, etc. Additionally however, I grew up playing this game and knew many kids who could actually perform neat tricks like wall jumps and glitching into obstacles. NOW its all connected and I understand why the game acts funny during certain spots and after tons of play you start to feel like you can manipulate everything... Amazing work man!
I didnt even notice how long the video was. Im not very interested in speed runs but the quality of the video is very evident so im going to sub in hopes to find more interesting videos.
To be honest, the video and narrators explanation here and the depth of detail are more impressive than the actual feat itself. Imagine applying this amount of detail, intricacy and smarts to anything in life other than this. You would be the best at any job and in any field.
I don't see how that's possible, in any way lol. This is a fantastic video, but the knowledge and execution bar is way easier to clear than performing an actual speed run by like orders of magnitude. You have multiple instances in the speed run where the margin of error of inputs is a few frames or more commonly a single frame. Or where tricks to shave time are learned through the combined efforts of multiple speed runners over the span of a decade or more. Fucking crazy. You'd have to spend way more time and effort to perform a competent speed run of this game than to make an exact replica of this video.
They are following their passion... Would you tell a sports star he is wasting his time? Would you tell Mozart he's wasting his time? And he is wasting his time too by leaving salty replies....
One of the best videos I’ve seen in a while, not over edited, information, and I’m not a huge fan of Mario speedruns and informational type videos and I really enjoyed all of the video, A well spent 27 minutes

For me the most fascinating is how people were able to figure these things out.
Tons of trial and errors.

Given her lackluster reaction at her rescue by the end of the game, I'd think she wasn't actually relieved that Mario had rescued her and was either being sarcastic or didn't care in the first place.
@Player_Redacted it was actually in the game that Bowser Jr. said she was his mother and she didn't correct him
Amokra yes and he then admits he knows she isn’t along with Bowser himself
This was actually enlightening on the amount of time, practice, but most of all, research, that goes into speed running.
Before today, if you told me someone told that some guy spent several months looking into super Mario bros in order to beat a record by 0.00.066 secs (or whatever unit of timing it was) I wouldn't be too impressed, but after seeing the amount of work done behind the scenes, only for it completely fly over the heads of all the casuals watching (myself included), this definitely changed my viewpoint towards speedrunners. And the craziest thing is that they usually just act like it's all fun and games.
SERIOUSLY, that guy was (including, not limited to);
a frame away from missing his "bus"
a pixel away from fucking up the final level
had whether or not he could take it easy decided by a single white pixel
And after all of that whether could even make it past bowser's hammer was determined completely by LUCK, the final milliseconds of a perfect run could of been completely annihilated by some bad luck and the guy was just casually smiling the whole way through.
Shinobi X mad respect for them really
This is the first video that blew my mind in the same manner you described
First the video of the trick: ruclips.net/video/X-zAWbM50JM/видео.html
Then the explanation: ruclips.net/video/kpk2tdsPh0A/видео.html
This is a really good explanation video! You've explained every details so well and correctly. Thank you for all the hard work. :)

@@WhiteHawk77 Oh right, if he had one more pea on his plate it would have delayed him 9 frames, entire speedrun ruined
You guys forget the most obvious one: His dad and mom conceived him at exactly 2:59:59 am, so that the judges can give him a 10-point-pixel on 8-1
Underrated comment. Should be on top.
Reading these comments make me question our society, why isn’t it more like this?

msec Ses You are looking at this the wrong way, maybe you consider success being let's say basketball world champion (just for example).

It's all in the details!
Or incredibly sad. There is nothing cool about sitting in a room all day every day playing mario over and over and over again.
That doesn't make it any less impressive. Even with hours upon hours of practice, I'd bet that most people wouldn't be able to do this.
Back When Army Of Two First Came Out
If he enjoys it and it pays the bills, then what's the problem?
Back When Army Of Two First Came Out there’s nothing cool about sitting in a cubicle all day every day doing sales over and over again
There is nothing cool about goatees
We’ve got to a point where we are beating records by FRAMES.
Edit: I mean by small amounts of frames. I’m implying that to measure it you have to use frames. I get that 10 seconds could be 600 frames but that’s not what I mean
you're always beating a record by frames, this just happens to be a tiny amount of frames :)
Sven Schipper true. I meant by like few frames
It’s ludicrous
what's really crazy to think about is that there has to be a limit to all this... eventually someone is going to hit it - and then others will follow - and then NO ONE will ever break that record again.

I don't want anyone else but you explaining us WR attempts.

This is a very rare case where the game is pushed to its limit. Most speedruns are not as insane.
I myself speedrun VS Mario Bros
"at least hobbyist"? Is it a job for some people?
Curtis Densmore short answer, yes.

Never knew that speedrunning was THIS analytically-demanding...

@MutinyVT
Haha, that is funny that nobody knows why the "Judges" behave in the way they do.
Most people who have a negative reaction watching a speedrun only do because they didn't understand it. Knowledge is everything.
_start to feel like you can manipulate everything_
"What's he doing?!"
"He's beginning to believe..."
Wait am I watching a Kahn Academy video or a world record explaination
Shockwave556 😂 ikr wtf
way better than math for sure
4:31 that music sync was beautiful
I didnt even notice how long the video was. Im not very interested in speed runs but the quality of the video is very evident so im going to sub in hopes to find more interesting videos.
I am surprised and not so surprised that I actually watched this whole video without clicking away.
its quite entertaining
Then you're a gamer

this video is really really really really really really well done! thanks for the excellent explanation

I didn’t realise these creatures existed. A fascinating species
Nature is amazing.
Perfectionists like noone else
Yep. Nerduranus they are called
Ooooh you are leaving salty replies under every comment now? How hypocritical of you to tell others they're wasting their time
They are following their passion...
So wait... the whole run comes down to the final boss’ hanmer sequence, hoping the last one doesn’t have a hitbox?
In the words of Darbian, "jump and pray"
That's the final boss tailored to our modern needs! Even speedrunners are being afraid of him.
Yea.. tecnically
Thanks you, you saved me from watching the video
:-) I precisely came to the same conclusion
