This dude is Legit! The range in sound/skill and his soulful approach has me wanting a Kurzwell. I’m just afraid that when I get it I won’t sound anywhere near as good as this humble Giant

    • @tenderlyone
      @tenderlyone Год назад +7

I would buy it, if I had the money! If you are concerned about the sound, let me tell you a little secret that salesman usually use in order to sell the keyboards. The reality is that the speaker said used in demonstrating the keywords is very good, and this allows for the range the of the sound to be demonstrated more efficiently. So, if you want to buy it, make sure you buy a good set of speakers, so that you can enjoy it to the fullest.

@@tenderlyone quite often, they use the line-out instead of mic'ing speakers hooked up to the keyboard's line outputs, which is retarded and hurts the sound versus recording the direct line out

Kurzweil keyboards are always build-like-a-tank, with big buttons, big knobs, solid keys and massive structure, been a pleasure to play it! Sounds and features ares awesome of course, but that beefy structure made the machine for me. It simply feels awesome to play.

Kurzweil works so hard on the sound of its instruments. I record live stages from my truck, occasionally unaware of what is being played, and Kurzweil is regularly fantastically good. It really is a blind test in these circumstances. Just amazingly good. So much DSP overhead is required to execute those crossfades and they are flawless, leaving no unhappy surprises for the player.

@@fragu123 Exactly. I found out that Roland make most or all of their stuff in Malaysia - so I went with Roland instead of these more or less expensive brands, most of which are made in China.
Yamaha makes only some of their boards in Japan.
Generally find outlets don't care where it's made. I'd rather support Japan than China! Or the USA over them both.

@@oscarsheen3045 I agree 1000%. But there are exceptions that prove the rule. I am typing this on an M1Pro 16" MacBook Pro by Apple. Ordered the day it was available. Over a month to ship. Received with a defective screen. Immediately replaced. Still, I wouldn't go near any other computer. I heard the K2700 in person during rehearsals. Incredible. Not to mention that it's the closest thing to a Kronos out there. Korg shot themselves in the foot with the Nautilus. I am quite familiar with the Roland line. There's a reason why theatre musicians and directors are using Kurzweil.

I would have liked to hear more synthesis. I remember playing a 61-key semi-weighted Kurzweil keyboard 10-20 years ago and the quality, polyphony, complexity and nuance of the synth sound were incredible; levels above anything by Roland, Yamaha, Korg, Casio, Kawai et al. The sounds were expressive and infinitely playable, as if they had been designed by a player as well as a programmer.
It used to puzzle me why keyboard manufacturers were concentrating on more and more realistic emulations of real instruments. I mean, I appreciate a portable grand piano, Fender Rhodes, Hammond organ and orchestral accompaniment and, I guess, if one is writing full arrangements, all the other hyper-realistic solo instruments are handy. However, nothing will ever compare to real instruments, especially solo instruments. I would rather record a real bass, guitar and brass, and drums if possible.
However, if one looks at the preset names of the early synthesizers, it becomes clear that the programmers were always trying to emulate real instruments, but the technological limits actually created entirely new instruments. There was no option to focus on realistic instruments, hence the creativity went into original synth sounds. If one compares the patches on an old Oberheim, Sequential Circuits, Moog, Arp, Yamaha etc. with today's synth patches, I think one will notice that today's patches are less designed for performance and more for instant sonic effect, less for players and more for producers.
The Kurzweil K2700 is so powerful it should be demonstrating the absolute pinnacle of synthesis types and performance. Every Roland drum machine is opinionated and has effectively been the backdrop to every musical era for decades. Kurzweil should be matching this in opinionated synthesis for the performer. It's not enough to just regurgitate the same inoffensive pads and leads.

      @billhenley2332 2 года назад +2

I've now had my K2700 for approximately 6 weeks. If it's synthesis you're in then sit down, strap in, and prepare for the latest version of V.A.S.T.. It's not for the synthesis newbie. It's complex and, from what I can tell thus far, limitless. Nothing else is even close.

Can’t speak for everyone, but I have always gravitated to Kurzweil boards manly for the piano and piano key action, organs, e-pianos, Wurlitzers, clavs and the like, but also have dedicated synths for actual synth sounds. Even though it has a superb synth engine, it’s just more fun to get hands on with an actual synth that has dedicated knobs per function and is the actual thing that the k’weil is emulating or sampled from.

Are u kidding? VAST is still an unbeatable OS in synth tech. It's a semi-modular sound flow that allows you to do whatever you want from scratch. Immense routing and control possibilities, multiple layerings of up to 500 sounds per patch: 1program = 32 sounds, 1 multi = 16 programs and that's 32x16 = 512 sounds on a press of a single key. Of course you are limited with polyphony but this gives you the picture of the complexity of this synth

I have some questions, if by any chance someone could answer :
How do I get the keyboard velocity to control the filter cutoff on synth sounds ? I play with both hands and feet, so I can't afford to use a fader or a CC pedal.
Is there a multi that transform all the controllers into a mixing desk with 9 programs ? There are multi with 4 faders assigned, but when I tried to add volume control and on/off on the button, I had so many conflicts with other midi assignation.
Is it possible to create a custom velocity curve ? And have velocity curve for each program ? I've a hard time playing Rhodes sounds and piano sounds with the same velocity curve. The keybed is good, but the way it interacts with different categories of sound should be tuned.
And last but not least, editing fx is a nightmare for me. Too many menu diving, and when I scroll through fx chain, it gets so laggy. Are there shorcuts ?

    Great instrument, great demo.
But, what striked me immediately, is that the piano sound doesn‘t open up as I‘d expect it when playing loud. The low volume sound is really good and rich, but the louder sound remains strangely restrained, sort of boxy. I know that this is subtle, and some guys would call me names, how I come to criticize a Kurzweil, but I do not experience this for example with the top Yamaha synth workstations.

I find Yamaha to certainly have a much brighter tone in their workstations, which suits itself better to the kinds of music I compose, but Kurz sounds have their own uses as well.

Kurzweil has still the best orchestral sounds of all workstations.
Roland Fantom may be a beast when it comes to synth voices, retro-stuff from the 80´s and emulation of the company´s best selling synths back in the days
The Montage is a very great instrument for playing FM sounds and manipulating them in real time and has some of the best natural instruments like brass, woodwind and stuff like that
The Kronos is a beast because of the 9 independent enginges
But Kurzweil blews everything out of the water when it comes to orchestral sounds, ensembles or voicings for scoring big motives

Kurzweil also has a fully backwards compatible FM engine (Basically a DX7) which you can program on its own or as blocks in VAST. I would also submit that Kurzweil's greatest strength is as a digital synth. Not just in terms of features but it is one of the best sounding digital synths out there. It's got its own sound.

@@oscarsheen3045 Kurzweil quality control is every bit as good as Nord. I bought my Pc3k8 in 2010 and it's as good today as it was when I bought it. Also, it's made in Korea. The PC4 is plastic and I don't like it as much (the keybed isn't as nice as the TP40L they put in the PC3k but it's fine). The 2700 however is metal with the same key bed as the PC3K8 so I expect that will be on par. The downside of metal though is weight. But Nord doesn't have VAST. Nor does it sound like Kurzweil either. So if you need that Nord won't cut it.

@@Screaming-Trees thanks trees. I can’t have a music piece that’s made in China when china supplies fentanyl etcetra that kills 10000 Americans a year and hundreds of thousands a year. Also China copied a product I made on Amazon. So, for personal reasons, I won’t buy a Kurzweil. For me, it has to be made somewhere else. But thank you for your info. I’m sure Kurzweil are very good, just doesn’t meet my centrepiece requirements.

@@oscarsheen3045 Yep I can get behind that. Off shoring was a disaster. It is only about margins for capital by engineering a race to the bottom for labour and zero consequences for repatriating those margins. I only bring it up because it seemed you were making a qualitative differentiation argument and there is very little difference between Nord and Kurzweil in this sense. They both use Fatar keyboards for example (there aren't that many keyboard manufacturers around these days). If they are going to charge premium prices though they should really consider bringing manufacturing back to Boston. Chinese manufacturing is so ubiquitous and pervasive now that I'll bet even Nord has parts inside that are shipped out of there (can't say for sure but it's a reasonable suspicion). It's sad that we've allowed this to happen and no one makes anything locally anymore.

While demonstrating the sequencer / song mode, he mentions that you can export your sequence to your daw. I have not found how you would do this other than recording playback into daw. Saving to thumb drive does not generate .mid file, just .k27 files.
Ideas?? Or, was he just speculating?

How can you control the drum track? Does the Kurzweil has such thing as a drun track? The multis with the key in parenthesis to start the drums are not convincing. I'd like to know if they have preset rhythmical arpeggios that can be easily recall

Kurzweils really are epic in terms of scope and they sound great. If only it was a little more accessible via a more hands on UI I think it would have a much larger following. As it is you need to make a breakthrough to grasp the architecture. Develop an intellectual understanding of sorts because the UI won't help you. It's a digital modular architecture so very flexible but the downside is obviously complexity. I'm not sure what the best way to do that is. It would be worth it though. If you could do it you could probably tackle any synthesis challenge thereafter. And a lot of it would translate to other platforms etc.

You must invest time to learn a Kurzweil. You might think that you don’t have the time. However, while learning to make great sounds you are relieving stress and developing your brain. Hence, investing the time pays back in other ways beyond making great sounds.
